Recently we spent the night in Youngstown on our way to Michigan. A good friend grew up in the area and when I asked him where we should eat, he told me that The Elmton in Struthers had "the best pizza ever." Of course your favorite pizza is always the one you grew up eating, so I knew he was biased. But we gave it a try. I called ahead and was waiting to pick up, wishing we had decided to eat in. The vibe is great and classic feeling, and the staff and fellow patrons were sweet. We got the large plain pizza and tried eating it out in the parking lot, but found it was too hot and too sloppy. Someone came out of the restaurant and told us that we had to wait a little bit to eat an Elmton pie. While I usually object to that sort of waiting game prerequisite I have to say it was worth the wait. The pizza was pretty delicious and we couldn't stop eating it. Oddly the plain comes with spicy green peppers mixed in the cheese, but I can see why. The heat gives a really nice kick off the thickness of the brick cheese. I'm really glad we stopped through here. Maybe one day we will again. read more

Been coming here since high school in the late 60's Lived out of the area and recently returned. Went in yesterday with a group of 3. Our waitress got the order wrong, then forgot to bring an item, not once but twice. The pizza was not the same, very dry and we ordered extra cheese. We got jammed in the bar area with a large group and it was just a mess. The bill was 65.00 not counting tip for a pizza, hamburger and a hoagie {at least it was good). I have been a lifetime Struthers resident and a lifelong Elmton customer and fan. Until today. I called to get a couple of chicken dinners. The staff called back with some confusion (again, it's only two dinners). No problem, I clarified what we ordered. They called back again about two minutes later because they were confused again. (Really?!? - it seriously was only two dinners). I canceled the order due to a lack of intelligence on their part. I asked to talk to the owner, and when he got on, he hung up on me mid sentence as I was explaining the problem. It would have been nice if he had made an attempt to diffuse the situation. I have heard from multiple people how much of an a$$hat Jack can be. I got to experience it firsthand today. I will make sure I let everyone I know how he values his customers. read more

This hurts the soul to have a bad experience at a great old school pizza and chicken place. The pizza order was all wrong asked for half plain got whole thing covered , the potatoes were undercooked nowhere near crisp, the broasted chicken was so salty we could not eat it .The order of bbq wings were slimy and undercooked. I can't believe I never reviewed this place. Ok, Monday they open at 4pm. 12" pizza is $7.00 on Monday. And chili dogs are 1.20 on Monday. If you aren't used to it, pizza is topped with a Swiss cheese blend, which is really good. But strong tasting if you weren't expecting it. The pizza is great. And I got my first chili dog from this place today. From now on, I am getting it whenever I stop in. It is on a toasted bun. Hot dog is hot. And chili sauce is homemade. That spicy Greek tasting chili, no beans in it. As good as any dog w/chili I have gotten anywhere. They have other stuff. Broasted chicken, which is actually deep fried in a pressure fryer. Everything is great. I have been eating here for years and years, but last couple years the food and wait staff have really great. Little update. I got the Broasted chicken yesterday, the seasoning is great! And crispy on the outside juicy inside. I got the mashed and chicken gravy. Extra side of gravy. And a glass of gravy. Kidding. But I do love gravy. Back again today for the Broasted fish. You can get (just like the chicken) fish only, or fish dinner. Add two sides. And the Broasted fries are the BEST! The seasoning blend is outstanding. And they are large pieces, bigger than steak fries. And crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. I really like this place. If you get a bad meal (which I never have) it is a rare error. To say I am disappointed with the Elmton is an understatement. My family and I have been patrons of the Elmton for over 40 years. Today was the last time I will ever be a patron after incredibly poor service and treatment. I found a gift card for the Elmton that I purchased several years ago. I was super excited to find a twenty-five dollar card, as I had previously thought it was lost. As I entered the shop, a patron in front of me attempted to use his gift card, and it was not registering on the machine. He was then comped the ten dollars he SAID was on the card. When I handed them my own card, it would not register either. I had the receipt attached so as to show that the card was, in fact, a valid purchase. I was then informed that because the card was over 5 years old, the card was no longer valid. I was "given" eight dollars off my bill as a courtesy. It was apparently their courtesy to keep the other seventeen dollars. I asked where the policy was posted and was told it is an Ohio policy and I can just look it up. I attempted to call the Emton and explain the situation and the manager hung up on me. I then double checked the policy to make sure I was correct in my knowledge that the Emton is lacking. Please keep in mind that their policy is NOT POSTED ANYWHERE. The following is a direct quote from the Ohio Attorney General's website. I would like to point out that the wording states that a gift card cannot expire within five years, but it can still work beyond five years. "A general-use prepaid card, gift certificate, or store gift card cannot have an expiration date within five years of the date the card was issued or within five years of the date funds were last loaded on the card, unless the end use is for business purposes. The expiration terms also must be clearly and conspicuously stated." I can assure you that I will be following up on this issue with the Better Business Bureau and the Attorney General's office on Monday. The right thing to do so would have been to honor the gift card. But apparently my money is better in their pocket, and they no longer care about making their customers happy. read more

Great tasting pizza... The crust is excellent, the sauce is very good, and the combination of cheeses they use is fantastic. You know you've got great pizza when you can order it plain and it still tastes awesome. You can make any pizza great by adding a lot of toppings, but when you can order a pizza with none of that and still find it very tasty and satisfying, you've got great pizza. To the native Wildcats of Strudders this is an absolute must-see! My mother is a Struthers native and insisted we make a stop here as I was home (Youngstown) for a couple days over the weekend. The Elmton was packed to the gill at 7:30 on a Friday night. This place is tight quarters all around with basically no waiting area. The hostess informed us that it would take 20-25 minutes to get seated, but it only took ten. I was thankful for this as I felt like I was standing right next to a booth of people enjoying their dinner --- because I was! Once seated, there was a nice view to several TV's and I was able to watch the beloved Bearcats off the Orange in the Big East Tourney (hells yes)! I tried both the pizza and the Cavatelli as I was informed that pasta, pizza, and chicken were the to-do's at the Elmton. Cavatellis were exactly what I'd expect from the Youngstown area: pasta and sauce deliciousness. The pizza was much better than most anything in Cincinnati, but I thought the sauce could have been sweeter. Drinks were dirt cheap as is everything in the Yo. Domestic draft beers were a buck seventy-five, I need not say anymore. Next stop: Ripps! read more
