I reguarly stay up the road at the Holiday Inn and have visited most of the eateries in the area and there's plenty to choose from. So far i've only been able to have a drink in the eagle as the place tends to be full up and seems so full of people I'm not sure eating would necessarily be a great experience. i'm told the food's quite good so i maay try a few more times before probably never bothering again - there a good alternatives in Exmouth market and a bit more space makes it seem worthwhile. Call me fussy but when you've grown up a bit you expect a bit of space in return for your money. read more

Visiting from Los Angeles. Saw this place featured on foodies shows. We were impressed. Very comfortable setting. Vegetable soup was a rich combo of potato, carrot and parsnips. The fish and chips were the best I have ever had and certainly the best I've had in London. read more

A GEM. Really. This place is a bit far from the action but it makes it more entertaining once you discover it. Sitting at a corner of a busy street, this pub-restaurant looks cosy without overdoing it. Actually it looked a little off to me first time I stepped inside. Lights were not too bright and it gave a grayish look with the rain outside. It was like stepping in a place you read about in books. Once the vision had disappeared I realized how heart warming this place is. It is busy in there mainly because of having the kitchen in the open, in the main room. You pick a chair, and then everything has to be ordered from the counter. And that is where it starts. Menus are written on chalk boards and change every day, even every hours. It is simple and food combinations looked all very appealing the day we were there. I got the steak, not so original you should say. But oh god I don't regret it. Perfectly cooked, thinly cut, lightly browned on the outside, veggies grilled next to it. Friends took the fish, a wholly grilled fish with delish Swiss chard. It was perfect. Plates looked and tasted great. Service is impeccable. While you eat, locals poured in, staff worked hard in the open kitchen, allowing you to see everything. To me it is a fast-casual-trendy (without willing to be) restaurant. Very nice time there. To end this beautiful moment we got the lemon panacota with caramel and caramelized onion and boy this one topped it all. Very very nice desert. Clap clap clap. We finished it all and gave a warm au revoir to the host. We'll be back for sure. This was worth the trip. read more

The coziest little gastropub I've ever seen. Hand-lettered signs; hand-pulled pints (not unusual for London, I know, but adds to the atmosphere for this Californian). I've walked by this dozens of times, but never really put it together that it was the famous gastropub until I was looking for a pub/restaurant close to Farringdon tube station. I met two friends here on a weekday evening, and to my surprise, it had much more of a pub atmosphere than that of a gastropub, with lots of people sitting in large groups at the table and just drinking (well, it was also Christmas time). By way of contrast, The Jugged Hare and Bull & Last had much more of a quiet restaurant setting, and Anchor and Hope has a separate dining room set out from the main bar. They also don't take reservations for tables, so we let a server know that we were waiting and then grabbed drinks at the bar. I ordered a Hackney IPA to start and it was a little warm for my liking (i.e. not cold at all). After about 20-30 minutes, three seats opened up by the window, as in stools along the ledge looking out to the street. We thought it was actually nice to be a little separated from the loud pub rowdiness going on in the centre, so it worked out quite well. Then it took us a while to realise that there was no menu coming, as the menu is on the blackboard behind the bar/open kitchen and you have to get up and order at the bar. Unfortunately they had ran out of sea bream by that point so I went with the chef's recommendation, the crab linguini, and my two friends ordered The Eagle Burger, filled with at least 4 thin slices of steak. I thought the crab linguini was ok, very fishy but tasty, but I probably won't try to order a pasta at a pub again. My friends liked the burger, though there was no indication that it was spicy and it actually has quite a strong kick to it. There were no sides served with it, but it was already too much to finish. There's not much in terms of service, as the server only brings the food out to you, and drinks are self-serve at the bar and they are not exactly bringing water to the table. That said, you are not paying for it either. Overall I think it is a fun place but it definitely feels like food takes a backseat. read more

Shortly after moving to London, the Eagle was our first gastropub experience and it did not disappoint. And considering the packed house others must have thought the same. I had the sausage and mash while my date had a pasta dish, both were wonderful and they have a pretty extensive and not too expensive wine list. Love The Eagle. During my last visit to London, stayed near King's Cross and walked to The Eagle for dinner twice in one week. First visit was grilled Napoli sausages on minted lentils, delicious huge serving. Second visit was seared sea scallops and Spanish chorizo over pan con tomate, I ate every last bite of the deliciousness and could barely move when I got home I was so full. Several bottles of very serviceable red & white wine at decent prices. Casual service, be prepared to share a table if your party is small. read more

Can't say I've ever eaten in this place but I do like this pub. Advantages are they serve an excellent range of ciders, have a large screen outside area which is very popular in the summer with live music at nights which combines to create a great atmosphere. Inside they've gone for the "quiant chintz" effect with various random decorations and a turqoise paint job which makes the pub quite dark (I'm a big fan of dark pubs!) Staff are friendly and I can't think of a single thing wrong with it. read more

This is an excellent place for an unhurried saturday lunch - the food is excellent and the atmosphere is congenial. Also the menu manages to be diverse without overstretching its very narrow confines. yet despite this there are two inherent problems which hold it back. the staff dress and act with such childish insousiance it's like their members of Sonic Youth rather than people who should be pouring you a pint. what's more the wine list is very limited - spanish names that you see elsewhere. the selection belies the passion of the chefs who are clearly working towards something a little more ambitious. read more

Loved it! Good beer, great food and a welcoming environment. What more could you expect from a pub. I had a delicious steak sandwich which I dream about even after a week of having it and my sis is trying to recreate the beef tangine that she had as I speak. Our last night in London we decided to have a meal at a local gastro-pub. We chose The Eagle from Yelp reviews. I must say that it was the right choice. Picking our meal from the chalkboard menu I chose the braised free range chicken leg, Cyprus potatoes with garlic, anchovy and rosemary chili. My wife and our friend both chose the Eagle Steak sandwich. I can report the chicken was tender and flavorful, with just enough chili to give it some heat and augment the flavor of the chicken and potatoes. The Eagle Steak sandwich was marvelous. The steak was tender to the tooth, with roasted onion, in a spicy sauce, topped with romaine lettuce, all in a brioche bun. No other sauce or condiment is needed with this sandwich. Both dishes were perfect portions, and paired well with the drawn Guinness. We topped off the meal with a wonderful Walnut truffle chocolate cake. Rich dark chocolate without any bitterness, with walnut chunks infused throughout. A very memorable meal for our last night in London! read more

The Eagle is a chilled out gastro which serves tasty simple foods. The pub itself is on one floor with lots of tables and it can get very busy. The menu is good simple foods with some classic traditional plates- the steak and guiness pie is good and the fish dishes are always high quality. The food is ordered and cooked infront of you in the bar- always quite assuring and adds to the atmosphere of the place! There is a great wine list, and I think it is all reasonably priced for the quality you recieve. read more

Someone who works at this pub stole my credit card information and tried to charge $1,500 worth of goods on it. Probably saw it didn't have the chip, as UK cards do, since I am an American. I know it was them because the only other places I used the card while in London were multinational banks. Really enjoyed the food and the people until they tried to take me for all i'm worth (which ain't much). Avoid this place like Ebola. read more

I recently called to ask a question about hours and had the unfortunate experience of speaking with the manager on the phone. He didn't even let me finish my question before berating me for calling during a busy hour. He then hung up on me.
