Very legit food that I deliberately travel from Manhattan for. I think the best way to start the day is with fish. We'll talk about how to end the day proper, another time. They serve a good portion size entree. Their plantains are good and they have fresher protein selections than others. The service is friendly, and the place is in a highly accessible area next to a major highway. They do have a smallish parking area, and street parking is very limited. If I could leave no stars, I would. These people have a problem with following directions and if asked, they have intentionally done the opposite. While I haven't had any issues when ordering in person, when ordering for delivery, it's another story and not a good one. I have recently ordered from Dumpling Cove from two different delivery services. The first time they didn't follow instructions, left out the plantain and sent some random drink that I did not chose. The second time, same thing. In the special comments, I asked them to put the escovitch onions on the side and not to forget the plantain. Guess what? Yep; you guessed it. They never sent the onions, left out the plantain AGAIN and sent me the most scrawny pieces of fish you can imagine. Because I added special instructions, they intentionally did the opposite, plus gave me bottom of the barrel selection. Usually, they will throw in 1 or 2 pieces of fish and dumplings..it's a thing they've been doing for their customers for years - and it's an appreciated bonus. This time around, this morning actually (1/20/2024), because I asked them not to forget food I pay for, they didn't add anything extra, still left out items that were supposed to be part of the meal and sent me the worst of the fish. I am so disappointed. Here we are trying to support your business even during these times of inflation (paying extra app fees) and you could care less about making sure the orders you sent out are accurate. One of the best jerk chicken dishes I've had. The jerk sauce is only mildly spicy and has a tangy, slightly sweet and complex flavor. I wish it was a bit spicier but I'm pretty sure they must have a spicier version. You can order regular, medium and large sizes, plus a choice of sides. The large was big enough for ample portions for two people and cost about twelve or thirteen bucks. The indoor seating is still closed due to COVID, but the restaurant has a large outdoor seating area. This is why we took this long drive to The Bronx. Surprise! No one is sitting on the patio. "Why, on such a beautiful, sunny day?", you ask. Well, the restaurant is blasting incredibly loud music through some street speakers on steroids. I don't know whether it's done to deter crows and mosquitoes, to attract passers by, or to detract you from sitting on the patio... If it's the latter, it's painfully efficient. And so, it's strictly a take-out joint for now. I could barely hear myself or the cashier, once inside. My blown ears and the dry plantains are the only reasons for deducting a star. But!.. Don't let it distract you from the fact that their falling off the bones jerk chicken (the only thing I tried there) is fabulous. read more

Saying all the prices changed "recently" She went on by arguing with of why she's right and I need to pay the higher price. I will be contacting the Better Business bureau to file a formal complaint. I was there with a group of about 16 on Sunday after church. the service was slow. it took a hour and a half to be served. they had old menus and the waiter told us that the price is different and is a few dollars higher than on the menu. what? they can't take time out to update the prices. most of our food was dry and overcooked. I can't tell if the cooks in the back were sleeping, but the food (Sunday 5/7/23) was horrible, bland, cold, disappointing. Jerk Salmon dish was just a piece of salmon with mostly bbq sauce, very little jerk sauce flavor. The rice/peas on the side was cold. The fried whiting with cabbage ...horrible...no flavor...the cabbage was truly something barely heated with some frozen peas/carrots. The pickled onions/carrot was just onions with white vinegar, no seasoning. The front line staff are overwhelmed, and slow....people wait 20 minutes for a take-out order. TIP: Owners and cooks need to taste their menu and revamp it! PS- when I asked for Bammy slide (on display in the front), I was told their stale, old, hard. Why have it on display? Heard a lot about Thai place but never got the chance to visit because am not in the BX often; I happened to be about ten minutes away from the restaurant and made it my business to check them out; COVID measures are in place, hand sanitizers are available as you walk in and masks are require for entry . If you've read many of my recent reviews, you'll see that I'm new to the Bronx area. Never heard of this establishment until my boyfriend recommended it. At the time he first mentioned it, it was called Dumpling Shop. One weekday morning, we decided to run in for breakfast. To our surprise, the name had been changed to "The Dumpling Cove". Its a very bright, modern, and beautiful establishment. I believe we went in at about 7am and even then, the line was growing. Service is quick, easy, and courteous. The main thing I loved about this place was THE MENU. Not only is it brightly lit, displayed appropriately with pricing, but the actually sell value meals. At a typical Jamaican restaurant, they might nickle-and-dime you for items that would otherwise, make a complete meal. Not at Dumpling Cove, you get a full value meal for a decent price - its called the "dumpling combo". The menu features a wide selection of Jamaican favorites (breakfast, lunch, and supper) and they had everything available for purchase. When we got to the register, I opted to go with the Callaloo and saltfish meal (Yes, I said a meal). My boyfriend got the ackee and sailfish. With the meal, you are offered a choice of fried or boiled dumplings; many shops I've been to before typically charge you extra for such items. If that wasn't offered, I would've protested that their name be changed lol. I also purchased some saltfish fritters on the side. I absolutely loved my callaloo and sailfish. It tasted as if I back home in Jamaica; The fish was fresh and cooked well, and the dumplings were light and fluffy. My only complaint was the excess amount of oil. By the time I got to work (15mins away), oil had leaked out of the brown bag and into the plastic bag. There was oil everywhere and my hands smelled like fish. It would've been nice if they could prevent that some way or drain the food when portioning out for the customer. I did not like the saltifish fritters, they were spicy and contained too much curry seasoning. My boyfriend loved his meal however, he had the same excess oil. Cons - only con was the lack of parking. It gets packed in this place and parking is slim to none. Be mindful of double parking as well, may be best to have a partner tag along. This was the Dumplin Shop. New name, same great food. West Indian/Caribbean fried fish, salt fish, oxtail, rice and peas etc. the usual. Food is very good but the fried dumplin with fish is fantastic. That's what the line is for. Turnover is good so you will always have fresh fried fish. It does however look like they are trying something new. All you can eat Sunday Brunch, karaoke night and special occasion events. There is a separate dining area for eat in with a full bar. Outdoor dining area for when it's not too brisk, ample lightening. Located next to 95 on a wide residential block with good parking. Food is great but be careful of the overcharged price if you are dining? They almost double the price on your order for dining in, charge a credit card fee when we paid with cash. When ask why they was a big difference in price we was told it's because we are receiving fresh food. I would believe everyone is supposed to get fresh food. We wasn't even giving the chance to fully tip because they charge it per item for service for dining in. For example jerk chicken was $13 if I order it to go and was charge $18. This should be said before dining that you will be charge for service on your bill automatically if that's the case. Which would be fine but let them customer have the option first. read more

SUNDAY BRUNCH REVIEW: I was so happy to finally try TDS after so many people I know raved about the food. I was definitely NOT disappointed by the quality of food when I visited then last month with my sister. I was even more thrilled when, during that visit, I received an advertisement with my takeout order that said they started an AYCE Sunday brunch from 11a to 4p for ONLY $18.99! I mean, that's unheard of! The ad said they were serving everything from Ackee & Saltfish to Oxtails. If you know ANYTHING about West Indian food, you must know that the proteins tend to be expensive. They take a long time to make and perfect, especially Curry Goat and Oxtail. Ackee, itself, is very expensive to purchase. It is the national fruit of Jamaica and the cost has steadily risen since I was little. So, when I found out that for basically the price of 1.5 large dinner, you can have a wide variety of West Indian fare and eat as much as you wanted I knew I was destined to return. They only allow 1 hour for brunching. It should really be 90 minutes IMO but that's their prerogative. I have been traveling every weekend in Aug and their brunch started Aug 6th. My first chance to try them was this past Sunday 8/27, and I was worried they'd be packed. I called up on Sat to ensure they still offered the brunch and to find out how packed they get. The lady said there should not be a long wait for a table. To be sure, we got there at 1030. Yes. I don't play. We found parking easily right out front and waited. As per usual, people were filling the take out area getting their food and driving off. I expected to see crowds lined up for brunch but in people went, double parked out front, ordering their food for takeout and leaving minutes later. I don't think the advertising is making enough of an impact on the patrons but I figured we could use that to our advantage and have a nice brunch without a long wait. Minutes to 11 I asked one of the employees if they were seating for brunch and she said they would open soon. Hubbs, my son and I sat at the breakfast bar in the takeout area and waited until after 11 when I asked again if they were open. The girl said they were still setting up but we were welcome to grab a table. We sat alone in the dining room while we waited for them to finish setup. It felt weird; like we were attending a Caribbean baby shower, Caribbean sweet sixteen, or pretty much ANY Caribbean get together where they send invites with a specific time but aren't ready for at least 90 minutes AFTER the stated start time. If you've been to one of these, you know exactly what I mean. 15 minutes in and another couple arrived and took a table. No one else came is for brunch. We could see through the glass doors that the take out area was filling to the brim where people had to wait outside the doors because it was packed! We really didn't understand why and I'm still assuming the patrons just don't get that the brunch is a much better option. The food is coming from the same kitchen and so we're not losing on quality. Around 1130, the server told us we could start eating if we would like but they still had more items to bring out. They had about 10 of their 16 stations served, some still with plastic wrap on the pans. We filled up in our first plates. I had a variety of Ackee & Saltfish, Cookup Saltfish, Fried Whiting, Dumpling, Rice and Peas and Curry Goat. They also had Fried and Jerk Chicken, Wings and Shrimp (both heavily drenched in a sweet Thai chili sauce) and they offer a complimentary glass of Cucumber Juice that tasted like an entire box of sugar was in it. The juice would taste much better if they lighten up the sugar. It was too sweet to finish. We were definitely full but they definitely have some room for improvement. They open at 6am and I think it's a little ridiculous that their 11AM brunch started thirty minutes late. I was disappointed that they didn't have all of the food out, even by the time we left. The juice they serve is made with way too much sugar. Some of the food they had out was cold, like the Dumplings and Fried Fish. The Curry Goat and Oxtails were very good. The Saltfish dishes were good but they have tons of bones so be careful. I would have liked to see some wet food (Boiled Dumplings and Green Banana) to have with the Saltfish but they may have brought that out after we left. I would definitely go back but being prepared to get there late when the food has a chance to warm up. For right now, take out is better but if more people attend the brunch they may improve. read more

The fishes I feel need to be seasoned a little better. If you order the fish dishes then you need to get the onion and peppers together to be satisfied. Don't expect a a crunchy eat the bones and all type of fish like you would get at a really good fish place off the water. If you happen to be in the area in the morning. Definitely step in and sample some of the porridges. If you happen to come in after 7am make sure that you give your self at least a 20 minute buffer because the lines can be long and the service may suffer a bit. The cashiers are very friendly and inviting. P.S. They do offer brunch on a Sunday. read more

My first visit here was disappointing because almost all the food was sold out. On my second visit I hit the mother load. Dumplings were crispy on the outside and fluffy in the center. Fried whiting was flaky and crunchy. The peppery onions which were added on top of the fish give a nice hit of spice. We ordered a large curry goat with rice and peas. Delicious.The steamed veggies are not the usual cabbage with a few wisps of carrot, we got some well seasoned broccoli and corn. The goat was tender and you could really taste the curry flavor. They have menu which includes chicken: fried and brown stewed, Fried cod fish, snapper, curry chicken etc. Lots of bottled juices like soursop, coconut water and peanut punch. I'm a true lover of Good Dine down on white plains rd and this place doesn't even compare when it comes to the ackee and Saltfish. It was totally gross. For example, the food being served for brunch if it's not to your liking You have to get on a take line to get the food you want to sit down on dine. The management fails To recognize this to accommodate the dining service. I was with a city official and was embarrassed as a Jamaican when it the staff was not sure if could dine and when they acknowledged It was 15 mins to get an order and other 25 mins for the food. The people at the dumpling cove work with a lot of customers and they still manage to be nice. The spot is very small but the line is always out the door. The food is full of flavor, well seasoned and it's reasonably priced. Went there one time and I loved. Was so excited to see they had cod fish fritters, I love them. A lot of people take out but they also have a sit down restaurant where they serve brunch. I got the whiting plate with dumpling, veggies and plantain. Delicious and enough for for two sittings.
