This is one of the few dive bars still left in the city. Also just a great part of history. I came in for a local comedy show, people are nice. The staff has no pretension. The Dugout is a casual place to go with friends for a few drinks. I wouldn't really expect to meet new people here, it's usually rather laid back and not too many people. They have a fun trivia night and tvs to watch sports games. Best part about this place, free unlimited popcorn with all your drinks! This bar is right under my boyfriend's apartment, so it's him and his roommates go-to spot. It's definitely a dive, but a great bar to become your usual. read more

Came here with my son (25) to see a comedy show. I'm not a big fan of local comedy shows as I typically find the comedians a little blue. Effin and jeffin may get a cheap laugh on the Internet but it has no place in the ears as the Supreme Court case with WBAI and George Carlin proves. The place has clearly had a recent renovation as they've fixed the 2 inch hole in the bathroom stall and removed "rap" music from the jukebox since I last came here after a Red Sox game. There are several televisions but they all show sports games. Why not open up one of them to classic television so patrons can watch episodes of St. Elsewhere and make up their own lyrics to the theme tune? A kitchen is coming soon, as sheet aluminum often indicates and no doubt bar food such as fries, chicken tenders and casserole will soon be offered. I hope they speak to the KVH and have the place kashered so the orthodox have a place to watch sports games and classic sitcoms. I had a PBR. It was $4. 4 stars. read more

WOMEN: AVOID! AGGRESSIVE MALE STAFF. Very rude. When I arrived, my date (a warm and friendly guy) asked the bartender where to find the comedy show. The bartender said "We have nothing to do with that," and ignored us. We discovered the door to the back room, maybe 20 feet away. The Dugout's all-male staff are hostile to women. At the intermission, I saw the same bartender snap at a small, meek, middle-aged woman, over her glass of white wine: "If you don't like my BARTENDING, you can either deal with it or get the FUCK out of here." She was shocked and speechless. He literally swore in the face of a short, quiet, older woman (who, as it turns out, was one of the comedians working there, bringing in customers that evening.) The same bartender (the short guy) also charged someone else's large drink order to my card. I was still squinting at the numbers on the receipt when he apparently realized his mistake, took my card and receipt out of my hand, and walked away to charge my card again. This was confusing. When he reappeared, I asked for a receipt. He handed me a copy of the sales slip. I clarified that I needed a *void* receipt (for the overcharge). He ignored me. The other guy behind the bar (the tall guy) refused to help me. The bartender did ultimately produce a void receipt, which had been torn in half. I wasn't feeling it anymore, so we left our drinks (already paid for) on the bar, and walked towards the comedy room. A man reached out from the shadows and tried to put a large hand on my arm. I couldn't see who it was; I shrank back. The man emerged from the shadows, it was the tall guy from behind the bar. He opened by defending himself: "I'M NOT YELLING AT YOU... I'M BEING VERY POLITE...". This was too weird, I had no idea what he wanted; we gave up and left. The only words I had said to these gentlemen were "I need a receipt", "I meant a void receipt", and "Would you please help me?". These were my exact words. The only reason I had to say these words at all was that the bartender had overcharged me. I can understand having an off night, but this really does not excuse yelling at me or at the comedian who was working there; two women who were each polite and reasonable. This is not a "dive bar"; dive bars can be great. This is just a lousy bar, run by aggressive, angry men who hate women. read more

My boyfriend and I walked in and got an angry stare as soon as we came in. It felt really awkward and there was just a bartender and two college kids sitting at the bar. We asked if we could sit down and he just responded with "uhh yeah?". We were going to get something to eat but several minutes after we sat down, took a look at the menu the bartender then decides to tells us that the kitchen is closed and that there was no table service. Keep in mind he was facing us the entire time we were sitting looking at the menu and the place had all of 5 people including ourselves in the entire place. My french housemate used to wonder about all these places that call themselves Brasserie, Bistro or Cafe - all French words used liberally without much respect for their original context. I mean PF Chang's China Bistro... WTF? Nowhere is the lexicon blurred further from the original intention than at The Dugout Cafe: "Cafe, you say? Ok, I'll have a latte and a pain au chocolate and I'll take that out on the patio, thanks." errrm.. no. Actually, The Dugout Cafe is not a cafe at all. But a dive bar. Not the world's greatest one, but still a good place for cheap pitchers of PBR and an obscured view of sports on TV. Last time I was in the free popcorn was missing. True story: My first week in Boston and freshly arrived from California, I descended into the Dugout with my new school friend, Carl, an old-fashioned redneck from North Carolina. Carl ordered a Bud; I asked for a pina colada. The bartender, a tough-looking guy with arms like a stevedore, leaned across the bar, set his face inches from mine, looked me in the eye with obvious distaste and said, "We don't serve pussy drinks here." A lesson learned: For the next three years, I never asked for anything but Bud at the Dugout. While it may be five stars in my heart, the Dugout's a dive and it doesn't pretend to be anything but a dive. You can't give a dive five stars--it defeats the whole purpose! People keep calling this place a "dive." Come on. It's right on Comm Ave next to Kenmore Square and it's full of middle class college students. It's not a dive at all. I've been to dives. The Dugout isn't even close. I would imagine people call it a dive because they're looking for some kind of tough guy "street cred" and they hope coming here will prove they have it. That's silly. This place is "no frills." It's cheap and it looks it, but it's not a dive. It's rather friendly, especially the bartenders (unless someone's been busting their chops or just being a pain). It's mostly clean...it doesn't have that characteristic smell of sour beer that tells you a place doesn't mop their floors enough, and the tables aren't sticky. They have a surprisingly good and varied beer selection, there's something for everybody. I wouldn't really recommend getting anything other than beer...God bless the nice bartenders here, but they don't know how to make drinks. Play it safe. Food is mostly frozen items. Not great, but they're cheap so you get what you pay for. I think the chicken fingers are probably the safest choice. This place doesn't promise anything more than what it delivers...it's not a "pub" that should be expected to have great food, it's just a bar. Cash only. read more

I LOVE the Dugout or as one other reviewer previously noted "Deux-Joh" (I like to give it a bit of a French pronunciation cause this place is a fine establishment). I came here all the time when I was a student at BU, and whenever I come home for a visit, I always try to get back here for a drink before Sox games. The bar is very much a BU institution from the hockey pics to the old school bartender who reserves the right to cut you off or kick you out as he sees fit. I speak from a bit of experience here as I was the object of his wrath on several occasions during my formative drinking years. I actually had a professor at BU who taught the final class of the year here over a couple pitchers, so I have to award the Dugout extra points for truly being a place of higher learning. read more

This an underground paradise for dive bar lovers. The drinks are cheap, there is a jukebox, a dart board, uncomfortable wooden booths, leather couches, dirty bathrooms, no ATM machine, no credit cards accepted, trivia night, free popcorn, and $2 pizzas (think Mama Celeste) with a purchase of a pitcher. I am a fan of dive bars and this is THE perfect dive bar. I would walk through the front door and by the time I reached the bar, the bartender, Ciaran, would have my drink prepared and a deck of cards on the bar waiting for me. My college friends and I would spend hours playing asshole in the corner and feeding the jukebox. When they were out of the fixings to make a pizza (which was often) they would let you order pizza in. This was many moons ago though, my friends. I recently went back to see how my old hang was faring and it has stood the test of time. While Ciaran no longer bartends, I had been told I had just missed him patronizing the bar himself. My friends and I settled into a familiar corner with a pitcher just as a trivia game had started, which we ended up winning! Good times, ALWAYS. read more

My friend and I stopped in here before Sox game for a few beers. It was early just a little afternoon and we were the 1st patrons in the door. Bartender was happy to see us and was a lot of fun. We had several drinks before we decided to head towards Fenway. Prices at the dugout were very fair! This is the ultimate Boston dive bar. Pronounced Le "Doo-Joh", it is a part of all BU student/alum history. I came here directly after my last final my senior year, about 10AM and didnt leave until dark. It isnt nice, its dark, its small, its smells but its cheap. I remember there is/was a dry cleaner next door whose door opened up into the bar so you could feel the steam from the machines and the smell of dry cleaning. I ordered ginger ale no ice, I took a few sips from the straw and after sitting there for about 15-20 minutes I noticed that there was lipstick on the glass. I had no lipstick on and I was drinking from the straw. We took it to the bar and the bartender told us we've been there for over an hour and he knows this because the ice melted (there was no ice as previously stated). All I wanted was a clean glass, not money back not some expensive alcohol, just a clean glass with ginger ale. The bartender had the grossest attitude and threw $2 at us. This place is a dive bar I can get down with. It's small and dark, but the beer is cheap and cold, and there is free popcorn. For 22 bucks, there was a pizza, maybe 8 beers, and lots of enjoyable conversation with the bartender. And the bartender! Whoa ho! I haven't had such conversation with one since my South Boston days. Good location for a BU Student, well-priced dive bar. They let you bring in food from outside, which is a super plus. Sadly, the guys who work there are kind of douchey to and women customers. If you want a $5 Sam Adams Brick Red + to be called babe, this is the place for you! I have a fair number of friends who have complained about this. read more

the dugout is where dive bars go when they hang out together. i don't quite understand the concept of a 5 star dive bar either. i mean i love this place and used to have dugout mondays here, but there is NO CHANCE this place could get above 3 stars because it is disgusting. good thing the beer is cheap cause you do NOT want to see the inside of those bathrooms sober. for realsies. they have popcorn sometimes and good music sometimes and trivia on wednesdays and they ALWAYS put the game on which is excellent. the pool table is slanted and the darts (2) don't stick in the dartboard and sometimes the chairs break. they took out BBH which is a bummer but they have a touch-screen game which i believe i still hold the record on photo hunt (they don't have nudie tho). you can carve your name in the wood and the place is suuuper dive-y but honestly you do not go to the dugout if you expect ambiance or cleanliness now do you. a good place to have a great conversation with like-minded friends and then you can tell you kids someday what a dive you used to hang in. good times. read more

It's grungy, it's dark, and it's cheap--in conclusion, a *great* college bar. The free popcorn is genius.
