For our final dinner on my daughter's Spring Break trip, we went to The Duchess . . . and this was easily the fanciest dinner we had all week. The girls were dressed for it, and it definitely felt like a "last night of the trip" kind of place. We did have my friend's younger son with us, and while the restaurant leans more toward young adults and adults, it was totally fine and we had no issues. As you'd expect, the food was top-notch and the service was what you'd expect from a place like this. My daughter's friend has a severe fish and nut allergy, so we made sure to communicate that upfront. For most of the evening, they were very attentive and accommodating, which we appreciated. There was one moment worth mentioning . . . a runner brought over a dish, and when I asked if it was safe for her, he said yes. Unfortunately, there was a miscommunication, and it turned out to be tuna tartare, which we initially thought was steak tartare. She took a bite, and it definitely gave us a scare. Thankfully, she took her allergy medication right away, and everything ended up being okay. I chalk it up to the nature of a high-end restaurant with multiple servers and runners, but it's something to be mindful of, especially when dealing with serious allergies. Outside of that . . . fantastic meal, beautiful venue, and a great way to end the trip. I'll definitely be back . . . just a little more vocal about allergies next time, and I'd recommend the same to anyone visiting. read more

Food was great! Definitely order the Stracciatella and Beef Wellington. I could've skipped the Aubergine Carpaccio and the truffle mashed potatoes. The potatoes were a little dry and the carpaccio lacked flavor. Our service was great, as was the overall ambiance. One major challenge was that there is no air conditioning but since this was the middle of June, it was extremely hot and we ended up rushing though our meal because both of us were on the brink of overheating. Perhaps it's better in the cooler months, but would definitely reconsider if you're going when it's very hot outside. read more

We loved this beautiful restaurant. We sat at the bar and Walter was our waiter/bartender. The food was amazing and perfectly cooked and the atmosphere has that good old school bank meets cool bar vibe. Overall it wasn't bad but not great. The bread and tomato Starter was okay very very salty. Got the mushroom risotto: amazing Beef Wellington was really good but we asked medium it was more medium rare which was fine. The green goddess salad was decent but overwhelming Pistachio flavor. So now the worst: the oysters ... not great. The mashed potatoes without truffle was extremely lackluster. It tasted just like the $1 dollar powdered potatoes you buy at a grocery store. Couldn't believe it. Both my husband and I were expecting so much more. With our bill being close to $250usd We both even had upset stomachs all night. Very sad read more

I had such a wonderful experience here with my sister and best friend that I came back the next evening by myself for a late meal. Every dish here is pretty fantastic and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The dishes we liked most were the seafood pasta, cacio e Pepe, sea bass carpaccio, tuna tartare, and pasta with short ribs. Great service as well and nice decor. This a great One Michelin star restaurant... a match made in heaven (meaning my taste buds and the Duchess restaurant). Beef tartare, baked seas bass and a wine pairing . Magnifique! Slight improvements needed include the kitchen including the hard fibrous ends of the asparagus. The chocolate explosion was a wonderful show, Oh, and the servers are top notch from countries scattered across the European Union. I head Greek and Spanish accents and a smattering of others. Wrapping up a business trip in Amsterdam was looking for a place that would have a flair of elegance, without being overly pretentious, and happened to find that the restaurant right at my hotel for the bill perfectly. As an added bonus, my co-worker had never been to a Michelin starred restaurant, so this fave is the opportunity to expand our horizons. The Duchess proved to be an outstanding choice. Our bar seats were slightly out of the way and gave us a prime perch to absorb the wonderful character of the main room. The restored bank building had a charm that was reflective of the charm of the city it's self. The bartenders were quite attentive and we had soon decided on several dishes to try. As my co-worker is a less than adventurous gourmand, we kept it fairly simple: steak tartare, tuna tartare, and a potato roti with truffle. The steak tartare - perfectly balanced. The tuna tartare, even better - served with a dusting of pistachios which was a new twist for me. Really really good. The star appetizer, however, was the potato roti. A crisp exterior, with a delicate center of mashed potatoes. Divine! Even if "fried potatoes" is a basic human need, this one was so elevated! The hint of truffle flavour was subtle and did not overpower the appetizer. A great start for the restaurant. For our entree we moved to beef Wellington and the salt baked sea bass. Both were quintessentially examples of such dishes. My co-worked had never had the Wellington and truly enjoyed it. My sea bass brought back memories of a similar dish enjoyed on in St. Tropez on the shores of the Mediterranean. Simply prepared deliciousness. Of course, after such an amazing meal, we had to indulge in some desserts. We tried the pavlova and a cheesecake. My pavlova was a mango based example of the dish and was Very very good. My co-worker's cheese cake was...different. It had a unique funkiness of the cheese. It wasn't horrible, but was a little unexpected for two Americans used to Juniors cheesecake in the States Truly, the Duchess made for an fine elevated closure to an other dreary, cold week in Amsterdam. The Duchess has become a reoccurring visit when we're in town. We've now been 3 times in 3 visits over the last year and a half. 2 times for High Tea and 1 dinner. The two are quite different but equally fun and creative. The teas and food items have changed which has made the visits more exciting. The staff have always been polite, accommodating, and warm. They speak great English which makes things run smoothly. The staff, that we've interacted with speak English, Dutch, French, Italian. For the High Tea you're given two types of teas. One to pair with your savory bites and one for sweets. Each tea is unique and suited for the food. When we did the High Tea during Christmas the savory bites were mini burgers and sandwiches. Our next visit, Spring, the savory bites were sandwiches and arancini and a type of puffed bread. Both times the first sweet has been a fresh baked scone with clotted cream and jam. The scone is always warm, flaky and buttery. Yum! The next sweets are a tiered tower of delightful sweets of all sorts (tarts, macaron, cotton candy, eclairs, etc). During Christmas they were an array of whimsical Christmas items (packages, Christmas trees, etc). In Spring they were cute colorful delectable bites. Dinner at The Duchess is where the kitchen shines. The Dover Sole is definitely the best I've ever had! The Truffle risotto was a dish that we still talk about today, 4 months later. The rice cooked to perfection, the truffles not over powering, the broth used was deep and rich. It was utter perfection. Every dish we've had at the restaurant has been delicious and creative. We've never returned a dish or wish it was prepared differently. We can't wait to return during our next visit. read more

Wow and this place is highly rated. Small portions that they claim are for sharing but even then they are.not big enough for one person to eat alone. Bottom line if you are hungry don't come. Had a knife for my food that could not cut through my meat. Had to ask for a new one. We had poor service and were left alone with empty glasses and more without any attention. And then came the bill. They had the nerve to add their own mandatory service charge for what I considered poor service. This place is overrated . Not deserving of their rating.. read more

That said, a word of caution - our server engaged in some serious up selling that ran out bill up to an extraordinary level for what was received. Case in point, I was presented with the opportunity to order an after dinner brandy. To inquire about the price in front of my guest would have put me in a position of looking cheap. The pour on the brandy ordered could not have been much more than a thimble full in two glasses, yet I was charged 125 euros. The wine pours throughout the evening were "short" pours not reacting the widest part of the wine glass as is typical. The dinner for 2 at 495 euros was way over priced for the amount received. Word to the wise - question the cost before ordering. read more

I'm not sure if this was their regular menu - everything was well-executed and delicious, but unexciting for a Michelin-starred restaurant. As a guest at W Hotel Marriott, we were recommended to have breakfast buffet at the Duchess. The Breakfast Manager, I believe his name was Marion, was everything you imagine in your ideal interaction when you enter a restaurant. He was friendly and personable, with a little sense of humor and a lovely sense of decorum. The building is exceptionally beautiful with fantastic art installations throughout. In a former bank building, they have given this space a sense of sophistication and warmth. The breakfast buffet is nice but the chef prepared warm options are perfection. The decor is amazing, we ordered a range of appetizers - our favorites were the lobster and king crab salad, beetroot tartare and the baked scallop, all were flavorful and fresh. We also enjoyed the fennel salad and the crunchy zucchini with truffle (very unique dish). For entrees, the beef Wellington and whole sea bass were our favorites. Service was excellent and attentive. The restaurant has a nostalgic and stylistic vibe with a spacious seating layout. The service was very attentive and engaged throughout the dinner service. The food was excellent in all aspects. The guests enjoyed the sea bass ceviche, the crispy rosti, scallops, sole, short rib with pasta and for desert the pavlova and creme brûlée were fantastic standouts to finish the meal. I was expecting with this price point and the fact that they are Michelin rated it would be great. I got the seafood pasta, escargot, and my husband got the pepper steak that was recommended. The service was great although they wouldn't sit us as the bar as we would have liked they said it was full... no one sat there the entire time we were there. I guess i expected more for Michelin. We ordered 5-6 plates. Nothing knocked my socks off but the creme brulle was delicious partly due to the homemade ice cream on top was delicious. The short ribs sauce was so incredibly strong, it was hard to eat. Spaghetti caviar didn't have a lot of flavor. Service was impeccable and the building was gorgeous. We were in Amsterdam for a holiday. Decided to try the Duchess which had a good review. It is a beautiful room a former bank from the late 1800's. Our wait staff was very friendly and helpful. We started with the bracciola which was tasty but a tad salty. For mains we had the prawns which were good in a delicious sauce and the pasta with braised ribs. It was very good the pasta was made in house. They have a very good reasonably priced wine list. Overall it was a good experience but not as great as we expected. I think the problem was with the cooking staff. We had a view of the kitchen and the average age was under 30. They need an experienced chef to do quality control. I mean, I dunno. It's a standard French Brasserie-style Michelin restaurant. Duck, risotto, beef Wellington were all great. Pesto pasta was a little heavy on the cream in the pesto sauce but it all works. Staff was friendly and really wanted us to have a good experience, which was awesome. But if I could do it again I'd probably just focus on dessert. The chocolate surprise thing and the table made ice cream with liquid nitrogen were not only a great show, but the flavors were all there. The building/restaurant itself is extremely nice - an old bank vault with 30/40 foot ceilings and one main large dining room. I wouldn't choose here for a cozy meal. They were preparing the tea service when we left after a lunch - looked like that might be the highlight to make sure you hit here. Compared to other one-stars we've been to, the menu is just doing staples well, no more and no less. read more

Truth be told this place might be considered by some as overpriced but overall I thought the place was great. Really cool atmosphere and vibe with killer drinks and food to go with it. 2 weeks later and I'm still thinking about that pistachio sour I had. For food I had the steak tartare and the beef Wellington with truffle mashed potatoes. All three dishes were excellent and would order again. Service was also quick and unobtrusive. For a high end concept restaurant one can do better, much better. As a matter of fact, in our case better was hot dogs and burgers stand on the corner. I wish I was kidding or exaggerating. We went with high expectations after getting a recommendation from a friend and taking a look at the website and the menu. I mean, once you look over it, it does sound amazing, doesn't it? Anyway, we freshened up and braved through the below zero temperatures to get to taste the wonderful things that the menu had promised us. The restaurant is located inside the same building as the W hotel and the building is stunning. It feels like you are walking into a place from almost a hundred years ago.. alas, looks can be deceiving. It all started okay. We got introduced to our server, got a bottle of water and placed order for drinks there were absolutely great, except it took 15 minutes to get them and even our server had to apologize and say that she is not sure why it's taking so long. It should have been a warning. Granted the drinks were good, still... We ordered three appetizers and one main course to share. The first appetizer was oysters and it was darn good but it's very difficult to ruin good oysters. The second one was beef tartare and arguably it was the best I've had. Sadly that's all the positives I can mention. The bread that came with tomato and pepper should have been amazing but the bread and tomato were extremely oversalted - at some point I took a bite and it was nothing but salt! Similarly, baby eel was not just oversalted, it tasted of nothing but salt. While the trio of appetizers arrived at a fairly reasonable time, the 10 mushroom risotto that made me salivate when I read the menu, was taking upwards to an hour to get to our table. At about 45 minute mark or so, our server stopped by to say that the risotto is going to be out in a minute. Fifteen minutes later we asked to cancel it and get our check. Over the course of an hour and forty minutes we were not asked even once whether we'd like more water ( we did) or more bread (we did) or to order something else.... In addition there a gentleman with an overgrown mustache who was very impatient and abrasive and a dictionary definition of condescending prick and alpha-male mainsplainer douche who made it a point to turn his nose up and remove everything from the table the millisecond it was no longer necessary. Of course, when we actually need someone in charge, he was nowhere to be found. Once we have politely asked our server to cancel the risotto and bring our check, The Overgrown Mustache decided to inquire if everything is okay with the fakest smile I've seen in person. When I told him that I've had dinners at most iron chefs restaurants and multiple Michelin star restaurants and this was by far the worst, he somehow managed to impart on us that he would rather we not pay the €180, however this was not offered as an apology for a bad service or no, this was offered as the most condescending slap in a face "you plebs" way that we 7 out of general principal. Literally the worst birthday experience and the worst dinner in Europe I've ever had. read more

This place was quite an amazing dining experience all around. Even though the night we went they had a limited menu due to kitchen complications, the meal was stellar from start to finish. Amazing drinks - I got a lemon drop martini and an espresso martini. Had an amazing beef Wellington, and some great apps. Atmosphere is mixed but, would be great for a romantic date night or a business/colleague dinner. It is quite expensive, and more than what I usually am willing to pay for dinner but it was an amazing and well worth it vacation treat! Desserts are a must. Spectacular. Absolutely lovely. I came in and sat at the bar for drinks and desserts. I wish that I hadn't eaten dinner already because I would have loved to have eaten more. I can definitely see how and why this place was awarded a Michelin star. The service is fantastic. No joke, the bartender remembered the wine that the man sitting next to me got on his previous visit. And it had been weeks. WEEKS!!! The atmosphere is sophisticated but friendly and accommodating. I didn't feel out of place and was very comfortable. I got 2 desserts, both of which were on the heavier side so I asked the bartender to decide on a drink that would accompany my selections. He made an excellent choice and I very much enjoyed my entire experience. When and if I come back to Amsterdam I am absolutely going to come back here and eat as much as I can. read more
