What a fantastic bar and restaurant. The staff here were all very helpful and knowledgeable about the area as we were asking loads of questions. The meal here was fantastic and not expensive at all, which was helpful as we were running low on holiday funds at the time. There is a well located just outside in the car park so don't forget to get a picture of you fake falling into it. I highly recommend this restaurant and bar. I was there for a business dinner in August 2023. We had a large table in the back that was very comfortable. The ambiance is excellent and the service was great. All of the good was amazing, the steak I ordered medium rare was cooked perfectly. The Dropping Well is a great pub and restaurant. I go here a lot for really nice, casual meals with my family. It's not fancy - half the pub is very much a pub with sport on telly and old men propping up the bar and then the other half is a restaurant. But you can still order the same food in the pub, which is handy. They do a great Fishermans platter and I always order a side of their wedges with no matter what I have for my main. They're lovely and crispy and I can never resist them! They also have a little outside area overlooking a stream that's really pretty - the perfect place to sit on a fine summer's evening. read more

In the wasteland between Darty/Rathgar and Donnybrook its pretty much a pub free zone. Thankfully the Dropping well is right in the middle of Milltown to profile for the thirsty hoards of Dublin 6. This is another pub in the Charlie Chalke empire. Theres nothing special about the place really and I've only really been there on a Sunday with a sore head in search of soakage, which they do in the form of a pretty good carvery. As Kate says the setting it pretty much the best feature of the place as it sits over looking the river dodder. The conservatory at the back is nice but can quickly turn into sweat box on a sunny day. The restaurant at he back of the pub is known as the Bank but its pretty much all one super pub. read more

This is great pub, a bit out of the way, not really in any village or town around it, its just stuck there beside a river. Because of how close it is to the river this poor pub gets flooded from time to time, I put a picture up of the car park of this pub during floods about a year ago, i think the height of the water is as impressive as the pub itself! The little front bar of this pub is really nice, very "old Irish pub" looking and I suppose would be the old man half of this pub if you had to pick a side to be the old man side! The rest of the pub is actually fairly big, nice bright modern and open. They do food in here too, I have only ever really gotten the platters that they serve (one gets hungry after a few pints after work!) and they were tasty, filled that spot! This is the pub to be in on Christmas eve too, the atmosphere is great and everyone is in a great mood. Lastly i have to say that this is one of the Luas drinking challenge stops, a welcome pub after some of the less classy pubs of the earlier stops! read more

Meh... Above average pub-standard starters but my main was a wee bit too "fishy" from the moment I cracked the batter. I complained to the pleasant enough waitress but instead of taking away my food she sent over an obnoxious manager who TOLD me the fish was fresh (it wasn't). I told him I wasn't going to eat it. He walked away and came back a few minutes later with a bill which he slammed onto the table making it obvious we were no longer welcome. We left the exact change and left. I suppose the lack of competition in the area means they can do as they like because they're guaranteed customers too shy of a walk to head elsewhere. This pub has great food. There is a lovely dining area with big windows and a conservatory - simply lovely in the sunshine. They have a great menu which covers something for everyone's tastes. Now if you are like me and you love your potatoes then this pub does the best potatoes, from baked potatoes to mashed potatoes to baby potatoes, yummy and as for the chips, well, they are the genuine potato cut chips. We all had different dishes ranging from fillet steak which melted in your mouth to thai vegetarian curry. Everyone gave their dishes the thumbs up. The wine a Chilean merlot was also super. The desserts - chocolate cake and banoffi pie went down a treat. There was plenty of room at the tables and a great buzzing atmosphere - a great sign of this pubs popularity. Maybe the best pint of guinness that I have drunk lately was in the Dropping well, after a walk along the river Dodder, it seems that the barman is an experienced, battle-hardened man. The pub is big, with different spaces, it is possible to sit with river views, even inside or outside. The food is ok, the typical pub menu is available, with massive portions. read more

I'm almost a regular here so I suppose I am a fan. I love their Steak Baguette and never try anything else as that is now kind of a tradition. And having been here several times it's a kind of home feeling to it. But especially this summer I noticed that the staff was pretty stressed due to people being inside and outside. I would've expected that they could get enough staff in to cater for the increased demand. Now that people are rather inside again it's better but some of the younger staff is still slightly stressed. read more

We ordered off the lunch menu and I ordered the club sandwich, which was very nice. Especially the fact that they cooked my bacon extra crispy! It was served with yummy chips and a side salad. The Dropping Well is very much a Sunday lunch pub. It's big and warm and the food they seerve is most certainly of the comfort variety. The food isn't particularly great but does the trick and as a pub it's more of the same. Grand but not great. Good pint, but food is mediocre at best. I had vegetarian linguine, and they were way overcooked. Also quite expensive. What put me off, though, was service. We had reserved a table at 1pm and were literally asked to leave at 2.30, before we could even think about ordering dessert or coffee/tea. My friend's 2-y old hadn't even finished her lasagna ... they didn't care and just rushed us off. That was was very rude, considering I wasn't told about the limited timeframe when I booked the table! Not recommended! read more

Lovely food, massive portions too. I was there for a birthday with the intention that everyone would get three courses and not one of us had room for desert. I had the lamb shank and it was tough. Everyone knows lamb shanks need to be cooked for hours. Nothing worse then tough undercooked shanks. My wife had a lasagne and it wasn't great either. You would expect more from such a popular pub. Just not good enough read more

went here to watch the Ireland v Austria game - the bar is nice claims to be 2014 Dublin bar of the year- the bar looks old but it is mocked up old- today they had a barman who was certainly in his 70's - at first we thought it was quaint an old barman in a old (mock) bar setting however this chap turned out to be quite a bully. He complained when we moved a bar stool had it replaced to its original setting - said he hadn't decided whether to turn over from GAA to the soccer. Finally when we got seats under the TV he kept insisting on moving the chairs so others could sit in high seats - at this stage and through the match the bar was less than half full. His attitude ruined the occasion for my friend and we will not be returning to this pub. read more

Having had and enjoyed lunch with my dad at the Dropping Well pub a number of times before, we decided to go again today and, due to the unbelievable rudeness of one of the waitresses, had an experience that means we will never enter that place again. Not simply because that woman was unforgivable in her behaviour but more importantly because the Dropping Well pub, in continuing to employ her, obviously condone the way she treats their clients. My father is an 81 year old man with multiple sclerosis and very much dependent on his crutch. As such, once we entered at about 2pm, I initially looked for a place to sit. The waitress in question came up and said, referring to the area that I was looking, "there is no free place there. Do you have a reservation?". I said no and she told us to follow her. So far, so perfunctionary (if not friendly or anything of that ilk). As we followed her as fast as we could, she came to a halt further down the pub and appeared to look for possible free tables. While she was doing so, I saw that the table next to us had two free seats. It was a large table with a bench arrangement to one side and seats on the other. Two gentlemen were sitting opposite each other, having a cup of tea and finishing up their meal on the far side of the table and two free places were set for other clientele on our side. Mindful of my father's infirmity and the pressure standing around was placing on him, I drew the attention of the waitress to the two free spots and said that they might do if the gentlemen didn't mind us joining them. Her reply was that we were not allowed to do that. I replied that I would like to check with the men for their views and she said I wasn't allowed to as "that kind of thing" wasn't done in this particular pub. I asked her then to clarify that she was telling me I could not speak to the men. She confirmed this. I told her that she had no right to tell me who I could speak to and who I couldn't speak to and it was up to me and the gentlemen as to whether we spoke to each other or not. In any case, as it turned out, the gentlemen were exactly that and had no problem with us sitting down as they were, in any case, leaving following finishing their tea. At that point the waitress effectively threw the menus at us at which point I said that we would not stay to be treated like that and left. Here's a tip Dropping Well pub, if you won't want people to sit and eat at tables in your pub, don't put down place settings for them. You disgust me. read more
