I'm from the Portland, Oregon foodie area. I'm serious about flavor. I also lived in Central…read moreAmerica for a couple years and left fearful of pig product but my husband convinced me to try this place. Our first trip to Rome was a gastric punishment. People served poor quality high priced food. We learned our lesson for this second trip and are using Yelp too. Thanks to Yelp and Pane & Vino, our first meal in Rome was fantastic!!!! All the sandwiches have this incredible and well seasoned juicy roast of pork except one which is the burger. Each sandwich has a different bread...red is colored with tomatoes from Mt Vesuvius. Black is colored with squid ink (don't worry there's zero squid flavor). Yellow is colored with Turmeric! My husband got the burger. It was absolutely delicious! I got the special...HELLO! Incredible and big so you can totally share it or take your time they don't push you out. There's alcoholic options along with sodas and waters to drink. The owner is wonderful! He refers to his restaurant as his house (so he'd never charge a fee for you to sit and eat there) and his menu items, creations, are his "children." He speaks 6 languages fluently so no worries if you don't speak Italian, he also speaks English, Spanish, French, and then 2 others that aren't Latin based. (He also speaks an additional 2 dialects not so fluently but hey, he's doing well in my book and very helpful to the 4 different couples and families that were in his tiny restaurant while we were there. Eat here afterwards before your Coliseum tour. Also, he's happy to give you suggestions for the area...he recommended a gem nearby of ST Clementine basilica to go check out some newly discovered ruins! It was incredible and we would have never known without him offering. We loved the food so much that we made it our last meal before leaving Rome as well!

A yummy thing happened on the way to the Colosseum …read more.. Pane & Vino is a tiny sandwich shop near il Colosseo that specializes in local porchetta (stuffed pork loin) and is run by the friendliest owner of all time. He gets to know every customer on a first name basis. I'd go back more to see him than to have a sandwich. Seriously, he's pretty awesome. The menu is simple and focused on sandwiches featuring their famous porchetta so we tried two recommendations from the peppy proprietor. While waiting, I got a miniature bottle of Chardonnay and my spouse sipped a Coke Zero. The Traiano Porchetta sandwich (12€ - 4 stars) is an original creation of the out-going owner with a mighty Mustard-flavored blend of Roast Pork, Sun-dried Tomatoes, and Grilled Eggplant. I like mustard and, therefore, liked this specialty much more than my wife, but we ended up ignoring portions of the so-so bun. Pane & Vino Special Porchetta (12€ - 4 stars) was a huge sandwich with the sliced Roast Pork Porchetta plus Mozzarella Cheese, Grilled Eggplant, Grilled Peppers, Mushrooms, Lettuce, and Mayo on classic Italian Pane. It needed more mayonnaise or a sprinkle of balsamic and olive oil for my tastes, but there was no denying it was a hearty hero. There are lots of pane bread and sandwich shops in Rome, but there is only one -- Pane & Vino -- run by the most welcoming of owners ever. If I'm in the neighborhood again, I'll be sure to stop in for a casual chat and some yummy porchetta sandwiches on the way to the Colosseum.

When in Rome and you want authentic vegan Italian food, this is the spot! I came here on a hot week…read moreday afternoon, yet still opted to sit outside on their lovely patio. They were filming content inside and I wanted to take in the fresh air and people watch. I was thankful they offered fast and free WiFi, so I was able to scan their vast menu quickly. I felt overwhelmed (in a good way) with plenty of options and I asked the server for a recommendation on what to order. He was very helpful and friendly and told me to go with the Cacio e Pepe. I'm so glad I got this dish as it's everything I could have imagined! The pasta was very pillowy, fresh and handmade and the sauce was rich, creamy and cheesy. It did not taste vegan at all! It had just the right amount of pepper to be well seasoned and flavorful. I knew I had to get dessert and struggled in choosing what to order. I opted for the cannolo, as that sounded unique to me, and I have never had a vegan version of this! I was delighted at the texture of the cannolo and the crispness of the shell. The sweet ricotta filling was smooth and luscious and the chocolate sauce and chocolate chips really took it over the top. The presentation was gorgeous and I loved the extra cream and candied pieces. I highly recommend this restaurant when in Rome and I would definitely return on a future trip!

Rifugio Romano served the best vegan pizza I've ever eaten! Searching for a place to eat, this place caught my eye for its good reviews on Gmaps and optimistic take on Roman classics turned plant-based. On a Friday around 1pm, right after we sat down, the restaurant sudden filled up with additional customers to about three-quarters full. Approximately two dozen seats inside and another dozen street side tables outside. Inside it's got a mom and pop traditional restaurant feel--a handful of two and four tops, a drinks fridge/wine chiller, a small corner bar, with medium-toned wooden tables and chairs. We checked in with the staff inside and they gave us the option to sit in or outside, we chose outdoors. Menus are scanned via QR code and if I recall correctly they have mostly Italian with some English. We ordered: - seasonal artichoke and vegan bacon pizza €16: first of all, the scale isn't obvious from my photo--it was a 12 inch pizza, for an individual pie--HUGE! Glad I saw the table over receiving their pizza first so I didn't make the big mistake of ordering more than one. Flavor--the artichoke, cheese and crust were a great combo, and the plant-based cheese stood out as one of the most strikingly similar cheesy textures out there. The bacon was visually and texturally dissimilar to the real thing, it looked dry though wasn't, and it wasn't bad, but it wasn't bacon. At least they hit one out of two on this pizza. It was a satisfying pie. - ratatouille €6: which ended up being sautéed beans, peas and asparagus. If there is one thing I noticed eating at a few different Italian restaurants in Italy--they overcook their vegetables, and this was on trend, a tad over, though still edible. The flavor was good but needed to tone down the salt a notch. Food arrived in about 15 minutes, the pizza was hot and crisp at the crust. Staff was friendly and checked in once during the meal. Cash and card accepted. Bathroom available though I didn't use it to comment.
