I had the pleasure of working with Doug at The Doug Walker Dog Training from October 2020 through February of 2021. My husband and I were moving to Japan, but through an oversight on our part, my dog Murphy needed to stay behind in CA for 180 days while he quarantined after getting his rabies shot. We found out at the last minute that he had to do his rabies series all over again, and Japan wouldn't accept him until that was done. We were in quite a predicament, but my mom had suggested The Doug Walker as she had used his services and spoke highly of him. Even without much notice, Doug said he could help with our long-term needs. He met us for a meet-and-greet, and took his time to introduce my dog to his home, backyard, and Doug's dogs. One by one his dogs came out, and although I was nervous, by the end of the meeting my little dog was playing with 3 big dogs with no problem! Doug showed us some tricks that he had taught his dogs to do, and he had such a strong command that we knew Murphy would be in very capable hands. We did an overnight test-run and Murphy did great. For the next 5 months, Doug cared for my dog, sent me pictures and updates, and helped us coordinate Murphy's final move. The daily rate was lowered after a certain amount of days, which helped us financially. When I picked up Murphy, he looked happy, fit (he even lost a few lbs as my vet had recommended!) and well taken care of. Doug mentioned that his pack accepted Murphy and that they all missed him after he left, which made me feel great. We couldn't have done this international move without him, and we are so thankful. Doug literally saved my dog's life. I had adopted my 75 pound lab mix Bear from the shelter at an adoption event. I was attracted to his size and his calm demeanor. I also felt sorry for him because he seemed so sad. I had no idea how many issues he had even though the foster coordinator did tell me he had been returned to the shelter three times before me. I thought with love and training he would be a good dog. I had trained two rescue dogs before I had children and thought I was ready for another. After bringing Bear home, it became more and more obvious that he was a fearful dog and had many behavioral issues due to this fearfulness. He jumped at any noise, barked at anyone other than the family who tried to get near him and was absolutely insane on a leash. He also appeared to be extremely dog aggressive. I hired a trainer recommended by the shelter and although he was good and thoughtful, his passive approach was difficult to implement, and didn't address many of my immediate problems. He also said that Bear would take a lot of work and always be fearful. I tried another trainer that seemed a little more highly recommended (and yes, I'll admit it, cheaper). After filling out a questionnaire and viewing Bear at her facility she told me that it was just a matter of time before he bit another dog or even a person. She also said that he would always be fearful. Based on her recommendation, I tried to rehome Bear. I was very honest, posting his information on Facebook exchanges and calling rescues. Nobody wanted him, based on the fact that he needed training and was possibly dog aggressive. One rescue recommended I drop him off at a shelter in Agoura Hills since people there had more money and there was less chance he would be put down. I called the shelter where I had gotten Bear and they told me they couldn't take him back either since it would be next to impossible to find a home for him. The only ray of hope I had was one woman on the Facebook exchange recommended Doug as someone who had helped plenty of PitBulls through a rescue she was affiliated with. I called Doug in a last ditch attempt before taking Bear to the shelter (and certain death). Doug spoke with me for almost an hour and gave me several tips over the phone in order to control Bear until he could meet him. On our first session, he came to my house and observed Bear. It was tense at first as Bear didn't like any strange people, let alone a tall man in a hat coming into his house. Doug won him over by the end of the session and had him taking treats from his hand. Doug did a lot of observing that day, gave me some training tasks to do and left us with something we didn't have before - hope. In the next session, Doug saw a completely new dog. Because of the tips and observations Doug had given us, I had the confidence to take Bear to the local dog park. The ability to run and socialize with other dogs was actually just what Bear needed. At the dog park he walked right up to people and let them pet him. He appeared just like any other dog. When Doug saw him, he was amazed at how much more relaxed he was. Doug has given us tools and techniques to work with Bear and he is improving by leaps and bounds. I can walk him now without having my arm ripped off or worrying that he will attack everyone we meet. He is sweet and polite and learning to be an amazing companion. Thanks to Doug, Bear will have a home with me for the rest of his life. read more

You can tell Doug really loves dogs. His wife too! In addition to being a great host, he's a dog trainer with understanding of dog psychology and active in helping to rehabilitate rescued dogs. My husband and I had been disappointed while looking at our other options for dog boarding like Camp Bow Wow (in Temecula, not a lot of space to run around and just a small kiddie pool) or Country Kennels (lots of space, beautiful property with awesome pool, but dogs are kept in their kennel almost all day). We had also tried a private dog sitter at her home where her yard was too small for our boy, a 90-lb Belgian Malinois mix with lots of energy, and she wasn't able to take dogs for walks. We were so excited when we found Doug. He's the perfect find! Doug has a nice pool that he lets dogs use and a huge backyard where the dogs can play freely and run. He doesn't believe in keeping dogs in their crates unless that's what the dog owner wants. Our dog, Max, was not used to being separated from us, so it took him a little bit to relax. Doug knew what was best and took him and other dogs on a long walk to start the trust and bonding process. It worked like a charm. My husband and I were on vacation for a week. Doug kept us posted with photos and videos, and we could tell Max was having a great time. We will definitely be bringing Max back to visit his new friends at Doug's house! read more

My dog JT is very intuitive when it come to people, he will not warm up to people who give off bad vibes. That being said, he almost didn't want to leave Doug's place. I didn't know whether to be happy or sad! I chose to be delighted that my pup had such a great time that he didn't want to leave! He also slept all the way home, a sign that he played his heart out! I had checked out a few other places, but I knew before we left that Doug had my vote! We booked then and there as he was almost full for the days we were traveling. His rates are great and honestly I would pay more for the quality of care that he and his wife give, they have a large house with a huge backyard and pool (for pups who swim). They treated JT like he was part of their "pack" which I believe they do with every dog who is lucky enough to stay with them.
