Was back in town for an annual conference, stayed at the Washington Hilton, and was looking for a modest, comfortable restaurant versus the crowded places up and down Connecticut Ave. I had such great experiences that my daughter and I returned at least four times for breakfast and an early dinner. Their food is basic but solid, which matches the place's ambiance. If I lived close by, I'm sure I'd frequent this place a couple of times per week... even just to sit and have a cup of coffee with a friend or have a piece of their delicious apple pie while viewing the eclectic and diverse residents passing by the window. Went for breakfast at the Diner on Saturday with my partner and we were seated right away which was nice. If we got here 30 minutes later, we would've had to wait to be seated but at 9:00am, there was no line, no wait. The woman who seated us could've been a bit more friendly but our waiter made up for her lack of cheer. I ordered the Migas breakfast and my partner ordered the Diner Hash. Both were good, but my egg scramble in the Migas was not very warm so threw my off and made me not want to eat it all. Still, it was filling, so much though that I left more than half on my plate. My partner enjoyed her Diner Hash. I was a bit bummed that I couldn't order an Irish coffee until after 10am so settled for tap water. Overall, not a bad meal for $25. read more

I don't get the hype. The milkshakes are the only thing worth the hype, and unfortunately for me, a milkshake alone at a diner does not make the rating. The food was uneven, mostly marked by large portions. Chili and liquid cheese tater tots are either exactly as delicious or exactly as disgusting as you'd imagine; the Cobb salad was huge and pretty decent, the adult banana milkshake was quite forgettable. Friends had the crazy two hot dog meal and some other less memorable items, and of the rest of the shakes, the peanut butter was superb, the rest didn't quite gather as much praise. read more

Alright this review will be short and sweet because I have very little memory of my actual time here after pouring myself into the diner after prolonged happy hour. I split the Money Cristo and the Patty Melt. Both were delicious, but if I had to choose, Monte Cristo hands down. I couldn't finish my half of either sandwich. I know there was a bourbon milkshake at our table and there may have been a second one. It was soooo good. There was also a biscuit and gravy at our table. In my experience the gravy has been a country gravy, which this wasn't, so it wasn't our favorite dish, but still good. Would love to come back sober. read more

While on a little road trip we decided to stop off in DC. I was craving breakfast food and saw this location on yelp. The Diner is on a small quaint block with tons of other restaurants. This is my go-to place! Since moving to DC from Jersey, I have missed the traditional diner scene. The Diner has filled that void with 24/7 service and a delicious menu. Even after switching to a plant-based diet, I still love coming here. It's a seat yourself type place with booths and a bar area. They are really affordable and serve breakfast all day and night. This was my first time eating at this diner. Our greeter was very fast in accomadating us to a table and our server was very fast in providing drinks and food options. The food came out very quickly and they were large portions. What i really enjoyed about this diner was there music choices that they were playing in the background. My sister and I were looking for a late night meal and we somehow ended up on Adams Morgan...yet again. I got The Ragin' Cajun and my sister got the Fried Chicken and French Toast. We waited a long while for our meals but when it did come, it was good. I loved the shrimp in the omelette. Everything else was okay. Same goes for the service. I feel like they were short-staffed. My first time for breakfast. To me a typical authentic diner. But, I was impressed that I was handed a drink menu along with the food menu. I ordered the chic breakfast biscuit. This is an elevated diner that is perfect for a casual breakfast. I have been here twice this summer, both times with my family, because they like traditional diner breakfast food over the brunch menus you'll find elsewhere on 18th Street. The first time, I got Migas, and it was good but not spectacular. The coffee is great but the servers are so busy they don't refill it as much as I'd like for how long we sat there. The second time I went I got a grilled cheese and THAT was awesome. I subbed out fried for potato chips and the combination of the greasy grilled cheese plus bacon with the greasy chips was exactly what I needed on a Sunday morning. It's a great diner, and it's amazing that it's open 24 hours a day three days a week! Great for late-night food if you don't want jumbo slice and want something filling. Overall, can't go wrong here and I would recommend! When my dad is back in town in October, we will definitely return. read more

What do you do when you've just witnessed nearly a thousand thrilled people have a phenomenal time at a shindig you poured your blood, sweat, and tears into for weeks upon weeks? Where do you run when you're exhausted, wet, haven't had anything to eat or drinks in hours, but still feel elated about the events of the evening? You catch a cab and haul your ass over to The Diner and gorge yourself on food that is ridiculously filling, reasonably priced, and so incredibly bad for you. At least, that seemed like a good idea to me and my lovely lady friends who helped me pull off one crazy caper Tuesday night. With rioting in the streets and random shirtless boy (who didn't look half bad with half his clothing off) dancing on top of a van parked outside, it was a little difficult navigating the throngs of Obama celebrants on 18th Street to make it inside the dining establishment, but once we got in it was half empty and grabbing a seat was easy. My milkshake seemed to be mostly ice cream, and although it'll run you a good five bucks, they serve it Friendly's style, with the metal canister of the extra that wouldn't fit in the cup - easily a double serving. Clearly what my expanding waistline needs. Thankfully, I foisted it off on Jane K. And the croque monsieur? Not quite as fab as what I had at FAB in the ATL, but considering the hour and my state of near-starvation... it was absolutely heavenly. Chunky ham, toasted bread, and gooey sloppy cheese to top it all. Mmmm mmm! This Fatty McLardo did -not- care about the caloric content, cuz I wolfed down every last bite, along with the boring side salad it came with. Reasons I love The Diner: 1. It has a "Yelp" sticker in the window - about as reliable as a Zagat sticker, that's a homing signal for me that this place is legit. 2. Their fries are perfectly crispy and seasoned - some of the best fries I've had anywhere in this world. 3. The Grilled Chicken Sandwich at $8 is a STEAL - a good 1/3 - 1/2 lb of meat perfectly cooked, and their basil mayo is so delicious that whatever you don't slather on your sandwich, you should dip your fries in. 4. Music here makes me happy. I ate my meal to early 2000's R&B, which is popular but not overplayed as of late. I kept having those "wow, I totally forgot about this song" moments. 5. Mac & Cheese with Gruyere, Fontina & Parmesan. Decadently rich and it comes with a salad to perfectly balance the heavy savoriness of the pasta. 6. Fantastic service. Attentive refills, orders and check-ins without being intrusive. 7. Free refills on soda. Holler. Also, did you know that Cherry Coke isn't on the menu, but if you ask for it, they'll mix some grenadine into regular for you? More delicious than Cherry Coke itself, if you ask me... 8. Ahhh, The Diner. Another late-night eating staple for Washington, DC nightlife. I can't tell you how many times this place has become a destination for me and my friends after an evening of painting the town. That is of course, if you can handle the wait. If it's after 2:00am between Thursday-Sunday the odds are more likely than not that there is going to be a 10-25 minute waiting depending on the size of your party. Once you make it inside, you will not regret it. Although I've only ordered breakfast foods here (eggs, sausage, omelets, french toast etc), I can attest that the food is tasty, albeit taking a walk on the bland side of the palette at times. However, this is of no concern if this is your destination after a night of drinking. Everything is AMAZING if that is the case and the wait is of no concern. I've always been pretty impressed that the waiters here seem to maintain a cool head and a level of patience when waiting on multiple tables of drunkards. Oh - except for the doormen. They are not as amused, so hold off on the shenanigans and the re-telling of your life story to them. So go 'head and eat, laugh, play and sober up at The Diner. We only waited about 5-10 min before we were seated and greeted. Important to note that the table to our left had also just been seated and the table on our right was just about to pay and leave. We both ordered breakfast - the eggs florentine and eggs chesapeake. It wasn't until a half hour later when our server finally came over to our table to tell us they lost our ticket and our food would be coming out on the fly. So okay. She was really friendly about it and told us they would pick up our drinks. Fair enough. By this time the table next to us that had been seated was already paying and leaving and the other table had again been seated, ordered and got their food before us. We're not ones to make a big fuss, so we just continued our conversation and let it go. When we finally got our food, our server never checked once checked on us. After we finished, it was about another 20 min before she appeared with our check - without asking if we wanted anything else. We had intended to get dessert but by that point, we decided to forget it and do a dessert date another day. The Diner is like that one girl. When you're with her she's great, funny, entertaining and makes you feel good. And yet there's something about her that kind of annoys you the whole time you're with her. In this case, it's that she's LOUD (and not necessarily when loud is a good thing). This place is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. Got a hangover that needs some fatty foods to soak up the alcohol like a ShamWow? Come on down. Passing through town at 4AM and need a place to eat? The Diner's got you covered. Service here is with a smile, and even though the table's are usually packed you can get seated at the counter without much wait. The bacon and bleu (B&B) omelet is fantastic. The eggs are cooked just right, and despite being stuffed full of bacon and bleu cheese, it's not too salty. The english muffins are also good, especially with butter and strawberry jam. I'd get the home fries instead of the grits only because the grits are pretty boring. They are a bit better with maple syrup, but generally I want my grits to be cheesier than a for-kids comedy movie. Also heard great remarks about the pancakes and the steak 'n' eggs, although I didn't try either. Oh yeah, and bottomless coffee which is pretty much required if you want to call yourself a diner. So I guess it's not that unique, but I'm always happy when I can get my caffeine fix! read more

So, I swaddled myself in layers and layers of clothes, topped it off with a hat and hoofed it down to Adams Morgan. I ordered a hot chocolate and the deluxe grilled cheese sandwich (cheddar, bacon and tomato) with french fries. I also snagged a few bites of my favorite Washingtonian's pancakes. I am certain that my rating for The Diner would increase if I'd patronized the place while slightly inebriated at 4:00am. However, stone cold sober, I can only give it three stars. Drat I forget the name of this pink drink that's similar to a long island but it's right nice. I'm yet looking for another. They have a lot of good food here. The 24-hour dining options in DC seem pretty limited, so this was pretty much the only option for my husband and I when we were starving late night and wanted food. We came not expecting much, but were pleasantly surprised by the service, ambiance, and food. I had pretty much the best chocolate chip pancakes I've ever eaten, and he had eggs with tater tots and bacon. The tater tots were pretty awesome as well. The waitress could have been better with coming around and giving us drink refills, so one star off for being somewhat neglectful. There's something deeply comforting about knowing that better times are ahead while being sandwiched between sweaty students at an Adam's Morgan bar--the better times being a stack of blueberry pancakes and a thick-rimmed mug of hot American coffee in the early hours of the morning. The Diner's relaxed feel and late hours made it a really welcoming place for me to wind down and mull over the moments I had just escaped. Sinking into a squeaky booth with people I barely know--just talking about the calorie-rich food and its simple wonders--stuffing my face with the fluffy blueberry pancakes, downing them with coffee--this experience at The Diner is as close as I can get to describing the phenomenology of satisfaction. The patience of the waiting staff (despite how full the restaurant was), contributed to the positive experience I had. But I have to admit that the degree of satisfaction I derive from The Diner is conditional on the ambience and the people--without it, the menu's rather high price points didn't fit its namesake. While I've had fun here, it remains unclear whether my monetary valuation of a short stack + coffee would be the same in different conditions. read more

I have a love for a "diner setting" and The Diner is at the top of my list for the DC area. The coffee is always good, so that's a great place to start. They serve breakfast all day and have a cool selection of "Benedicts" from which to choose. Not on the menu is the Irish Benedict, which uses corned beef hash. It's one of my favorites. The Croque and Dagger is a great take on a French classic. Try it! A highlight of all the breakfast items I've tried is their hash browns. They're crisp and crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. read more
