This is an old dining car that first opened in 1941 in Elmira and then was brought to Horseheads in 1974. Vintage sliding wooden door to enter the dining car. Either sit at the counter or in one of the booths or even at a few tables outside. A waitress brought our menus promptly and was friendly and prompt throughout. They serve breakfast and lunch until 2 p.m. We opted for breakfast. I had the cinnamon French toast and sausage. My friend had the 2 meat breakfast plate with eggs, toast, home fries, and sausage. Both were decent, and surprisingly the coffee was excellent. If you are in the area check this place out. The ambience alone is worth the visit. read more

IMMEDIATELY hit by the stuffy smells but understandable since it's a small place. It wasn't that busy and took the waitress 10 min to come over. One item we ordered was THE BIG PANCAKE. I then see the disgruntled and angry cook place a pre-made pancake on the grill to warm it up as our other food was cooking. Hash browns under done and bland. Bacon underdone and rubbery. 1 out of 2 eggs cooked well while the other yolk was shriveled up. The waitress was a bitch from the start. She only bothered to come back with the bill. She asked us how it was and we were honest about the pancake and said the rest was good (even though it was not). She made a face as if to argue with us with disagreement and confusion. She did ask if we would like him to "make another one.". I then said as nicely as I could, "well, I think the problem is if you reheat one instead of making it, it isn't too good." She then said, "oh no, we make them fresh to order." Anyway, between the smells, disgruntled cook, terrible food and bitchy waitress it's safe to say we won't be back. My family loves the place. It's neat eating in an old rail car. Anyone who's a train fanatic will love it as it looks great. It's clean and nice but still antiquated in a good way. It does mean there's limited seating and they are often really busy. Food is always great. We often go for breakfast but once went for lunch and had awesome BLTs. My husband and I waited at the door and it took at least 5 minutes before either one of the two waitresses to acknowledged us. My husband tried to get the waitresses attention but she ignored him until she was ready and then stated that she doesn't respond when people talk to her as she is walking away?! My husband even gave her a compliment. She then provided our check and my husband put his card on top of the check at the end of the table. She put the card reader in front of me. I then moved it in front of my husband so he could sign. We gave her a 20% tip anyway because it's just who we are. We said goodbye and no one would acknowledge us but the owner. very cute place, but the waitress gave me a cup of coffee and just deserted me. I take cream in my coffee but had no one to ask for cream so I just sat there not drinking my coffee. After many minutes, she came back to take my order. I started to speak and she said oh I forgot something and walked away. I then sat for another length of time and watched her get drinks for other people and bus tables so finally I just decided to leave. I came back to put two dollars on the counter for the coffee I didn't drink and she finally came over and I said I don't even have cream for my coffee and she's like well I'm busy and there are other people here I can CERTAINLY go get them for you with a really snotty tone and she was really rude. if people want local businesses to thrive customers can't be treated like the worst things in the world just wanted a couple of eggs for breakfast. The ventilation I think could be improved in there as it was pretty humid and I think that affects the moods of the people that work there and the smell of the eggs on the fryer was really overwhelming. Love this cute little place! There's probably only 7-8 booths and a bar so it's very small!!! The food is made right in front of you. This place was made out of an old railroad cart I believe. Fast service, good food, and great prices. Can't beat it. This is where all the locals go. Must try it out! I got a green omelette without green peppers and with American cheese. My dad got the same thing but with Swiss cheese. Personally we didn't like the Swiss cheese because it was kind of dull and not tasty in the omelette. But the American cheese was! I was able to substitute the toast that comes with the omelette with 1 slice of cinnamon French toast! Very delicious. read more

I really like diners- my wife and I came here on recommendation from a long time local. My wife had the Philly Cheesesteak w homemade fries- she loves this combo and felt this rated at least among the best and probably the best. I tried her fries and they were the best I've had. I took the lunch special: meatloaf w gravy on Mashed Potatoes w green peas- better than Mom made. I guess we're hooked! My son and I stopped in for breakfast on a Sunday morning and were lucky enough to get seats at the counter. The place was very crowded. I have to say that I had some of the best pancakes ever! The food is by no means fancy, but just basic hearty good diner food. What impressed me most was the wait and kitchen staff. I was on my way back from Bryn Mawr and needed a break. I found this diner just a tad-bit off the highway. I arrived on the backend of the lunch hour and it was rather busy. I found a spot at the counter so we were in business. I sat myseef and the waitress stopped over. She seemed a bit annoyed, but it was rather busy so gave her the benefit of the doubt. About 20-minutes later the place virtually cleared out. My food came out on a timely manner and correctly. FYI - they have fish and chips or fish fry specials on Fridays. I had coffee for lunch since I still had a few more hours of driving and the coffee was diner coffee; in a good way. The waitress made sure my cup was topped off upon each pass. Overall, this was a nice find. Be aware that it is a rather small diner so space is limited and makes the restrooms very small space as well. Glad I stopped here and if I find myself in the area, I may revisit. read more
