We swung through town and a worker at the Corn Palace suggested eating here. They put some unique twists on bar food and it's a cool place as well. I got the Coal Chamber and it was outstanding! Burger was over cooked and patty was thin. I asked for a medium cooked burger. Waffle fries were good. Beer selection was good.

We were in town for a funeral. Eaten here many times with mixed reviews; however, tonight there was no mistaking that the food was absolutely disgusting! The Caesar salad tasted like rotten anchovies. The medium burgers were hard and nastily overdone with pickled jalapeños on the raspberry popper burger! Seriously?! The waffle fries tasted like they were made yesterday. Reuben was dry and tough lunch meat folks! Super gross. And to top it all off everything and I mean everything was cold. And my $7.50 beer had about 3 inches of head. What a waste of money. Hard enough trip as it was for my husband's mother's funeral. What a waste of $140! Never going here again. Shame on you John for being ok with serving terrible food that is terribly overpriced. Oh and the icing on the cake you say? Granted it was Sunday but the service was sooo slow it took us over 30 minutes to even be asked for our orders, the only thing worse than the service was the food - the french dip was so salty you couldn't even dip it. Terrible service. It took over an hour and 15min to get an order of wings, fries, and a chicken sandwich. Waiter took our drink order and meal order and didn't show their face for over 45min. Food was below par and was not hot. Would not recommend this restaurant. Look elsewhere. read more

Got into town later than planned, and wanted something not fast food, they were open later. Food was good, soup of the day potato had great seasoning. Husband had the special steak of the day...and it's gone. Southwest chicken wrap was tasty - wish i could have finished it! Try the root beer on tap. Service at the bar was wonderful! Hmmm okay so I have been here a few times over the years and I feel like it's really declined with time! I do think they have very nice prices on drinks, so that's a great perk. This last time we were there, we ordered some French onion soup, Reuben sandwiches, and chicken. They changed the salads and absolutely all of them are iceberg based now, so that was weird. The French onion soup doesn't have bread anymore, it has croutons. The Reuben was great, really good. I had a nice couple drinks and the husband had some beer. The chicken was cold? So it was okay. Wonderful atmosphere, love saving the train depot. Had their corned beef & cabbage special, Ann went for the prime rib. Waitress came back and said the kitchen wouldn't start cooking the prime rib for another 1/2 hour. She went for 8 oz cod. Food came quick the corned beef and cabbage was good; the potatoes were undercooked. Ann's 8 oz cod was closer to 6, but she said it was good. Was enjoyable, but not great, just good. My family went to The Depot for a birthday dinner and it was the worst service and food we all have experienced in a while. Our server, Shelby, was very rude and she provided awful service. The food was the worst my family has had at a food establishment in all of Mitchell. None of our orders are what we wanted and what we did get was blah. As we were leaving the lady busing tables was pushing us out. As I was putting my coat on to leave, she crawled right under my arm and was in the way of my family getting out of the booth. It's important this review isn't filtered.... I stopped here for dinner with my family (4 of us) and had one of the worst dining experiences ever. Where do I start? We waited forever for a server to wait on us. They got my order wrong, but I just ate what they gave me because we waited so long. I ordered pork ribs, but I received either beef or buffalo. It was dry. The sauce was OK. Next, they switched servers on us. Our new server seemed OK at first, but then he stood at the table right next to ours blathering on and on about politics. His manner was horribly rude and totally ignorant. Next, I informed the server that the rolls they served (which must have come from some corner store) were moldy. After I mentioned it, he looked at them and said, "Oh, really?" and that was it. No apology or anything. He moved back to the other table and continued talking politics. The bill never came. We waited and waited... Finally, I just went up and asked for my check. I waited and the girl brought it to me. I sat down at a booth to make sure it was correct and to sign it. As I was walking up to the register to return the CC slip, I heard one guy murmur to another guy at the counter, "If you gotta look, you probably can't afford it." I just put the check down on the counter and didn't say a word and left. This was the worst place I've ever eaten - both the food and the service. I reserved my anger at that time because I was afraid of what I might say... I probably should have asked to talk to a manager, but I really don't see what good that would have done and didn't want to put up with any more ignorance from these bumpkins. I appreciate this opportunity to let others know what a horrible experience this was and I urge you to try a different restaurant if you are in Mitchell, South Dakota. read more

The restaurant pickings in Mitchell are slim, but there's not another large town around for several hours if you're taking I-90. That said, if you need a place to eat, pick The Depot. The food's decent, and it lives up to it's name of being a "depot". If you sit in the back of the restaurant, you'll probably get to see some trains run outside of your window. Perhaps I'm just easily entertained, but I enjoyed watching the trains go by as I ate my vegetable soup. I'll also note that this place has tasty-looking desserts. I didn't get to try them, but if I ever find myself back in South Dakota, I'll stop at The Depot to give them a try. read more

My husband and I had dinner here recently for the first time. Our neighbors had suggested we try it..... we had planned to eat at another Mitchell restaurant we'd been to a zillion times, and the idea of trying something new sounded appealing. Even though we saw some of the negative reviews on here, we still decided to give it a whirl! And I'm sure glad we did- we were very happy with our meal and the service, and will certainly come back in the future. We came on a weeknight, in the early evening.....it was not super busy and our server was friendly, attentive and right on top of our refills, etc. There is a HUGE beer selection, a few I hadn't seen since I moved out of a large city.... and there's also an interesting list of mixed drinks on the menu....our server was fairly knowledgeable about the beer, and she also gave us good suggestions for which mixed drink we might like to try, after we told her what kind of drinks we usually like. She suggested the "Whipped Captain" for me, made with Dr. Pepper instead of Coke, and it was absolutely delicious :) Food came out promptly and as we'd ordered it. Hubby got the ribs and he was happy with his meal. I ordered the ridiculously huge "Ultimate Conductor" sandwich- mostly because I'd been told it was enormous and I kinda wanted to see for myself. And yeah. It's enough food for three meals, but it's delicious, and it makes everyone turn and look as the server walks it through the dining room LOL. I couldn't even finish half, but brought the leftovers home and finished it for lunch the next day- still tasted great. Definitely an enjoyable experience, price was reasonable considering we both had a few drinks and I'd been served a sandwich larger than my head....we walked out spending about $60 with tip. Nice friendly staff, quick service, but surprisingly unimpressive food. My French dip sandwich was ok, but the au jus dipping sauce was so salty it was almost inedible. We also had the Dakota freight train which is chicken, spinach and cheese sauce on garlic flatbread, but the smell was rather offputting (to me) and it affected our enjoyment of the sandwich, which actually tasted pretty good. I had an excellent Rueben sandwich and my husband had the French onion burger both were outstanding and you got to pick your side so you didn't have to pay extra to not have fries. I have to say I'm sincerely impressed. 25 YRS ITB. (In the biz) - After a long day traveling, we checked in at our hotel (review that later!) at just minutes before 10. The OTHER place was nice enough to tell us where we could possibly eat, since they were closing at 10 (in 5 min). They didn't mention this place. But I called JUST IN CASE. Chris was super polite. Said they'd wait for us to get there even though they were closing the kitchen in 5 minutes. We were 5 minutes away so we ran over there ASAP. FIRST-Excellent, warm, friendly welcome. SECOND- my margarita was PERFECT. Super picky, and Chris made it perfectly. Delicious! They have a great variety of beers on tap. Husband had the Angry Orchard Cider Beer. We ordered the spicy pepper balls(?). Fried pepper jack. Delicious. Served w ranch. Dinner was steak tips for me. Cooked mid rare, to perfection. He had the Depot Cut. Also cooked beautifully. THIRD- Service was warm, fun, friendly and never for a second did they make us feel like we should rush. The kitchen stayed open LATE FOR US! With NO WORRIES! LASTLY AND FOR THE OWNER- It is very hard to find employees who treat your establishment as if it were their very own. You have true gems with Chris and Alicia. They were equally smart, fun, funny, interesting, personable yet professional and accommodating. We could not be happier that we couldn't find a room in Sioux Falls and we will ONLY be staying in Mitchell when we come this way again. Thank you Chris and Alicia. So much! Excellent spot to grab a beer and a bite. We went there on a Thursday night around 9, and while it was not busy, we enjoyed the casual atmosphere. I ordered the only sour beer available, while my husband had their local ale. Both were ice cold and refreshing. We also split an order of buffalo wings and they were incredible. I would highly recommend them! For under $30 for three beers and wings, it was a great deal. read more

For starters, the place itself is pretty cool. Situated in an old train depot, it's the perfect mix of old and new. The prices were reasonable, and the portions were large. The menu has a variety of options, even for the pickiest eaters. I had the chicken bacon ranch wrap, and it was delicious, and fresh. The waitstaff was super friendly, and service was prompt. We were seated as soon as we walked in, and the food came quickly. Should I ever find myself in Mitchell again, I would definitely pay another visit. read more

Very disappointed in this restaurant. Ordered French dip and Philly cheese steak. Menu states the beef was freshly cut (shaved), but there is no way that is correct. Each sandwich was at least $12. Tasted and looked like it had been soaking in a pan for some time and was probably frozen to begin. Charged an additional $1 for a small bowl of au jus. And, don't order a Shiner Bock unless you want to pay $5.75. Total was about $40. Waiter was kind of a smart aleck who was never around to give us more water or anything else. Don't waste your money here. You'll have better quality food at McDonalds for 1/5 of the price. read more

Found this place after a long drive. The engineer's steak and conductor sandwich were awesome! We ordered an appetizer called chislik (fried steak bits sprinkled with garlic powder) which were also great but I'd skip them if you're having either of the entrees we had as it is just too much meat. In a hurry? Go somewhere else. A business owner on the main drag in Mitchell recommended The Depot to us as a good place for lunch. The decor is great, the food was average, the service was poor. A friendly waitress can help a customer overlook some shortcomings but an unfriendly one tends to open the critical eye. The place was not busy but still we sat for quite some time before the waitress finally stopped. Without a greeting, she asked what we wanted to drink then disappeared again for ten minutes. She plunked down the drinks, took the food order, and disappeared again for 20 minutes. We finally flagged her down to ask if it would be much longer. Ten minutes later the food finally arrived. I asked for the check, she brought it back, and that's the last we saw of her. I hope employers in Mitchell are okay with two-hour lunches. That's what it would take if you ate at The Depot. read more

After spending 6 years coming to Mitchell for work, the Depot was one of my favorite spots to drop in and grab a bite. Dinners are fairly priced and lunches are tasty. Nothing memorable about the place, but I can say I never had a bad meal. read more

Went to Depot wanting a steak. Ordered and 8 oz ribeye medium rare. When i got it with was done well and it was thin. Who cuts a ribeye thin? The price was 20 bucks.
