So what if the tables are sticky? So what if you get hit on by a drunk kid? And so what if you step on beer or what used to be beer? I love the Den and there are no ifs ands or buts about it. This place has been my safe haven for a while now. Whether you are grabbing a drink after those long meetings on Fridays or after acing/flunking an exam, it's just nice to have place on campus to drift off to and hang with your friends. Each day they have a special on a different drink ($4-6). The drinks are cheap and the food isn't bad. I actually like the turkey-avocado sandwich and oh with a side of the potato salad (yum!). The bartenders can be inattentive at times, but it doesn't bother me too much. They are pretty strict about IDs. A group of my friends got kicked out because one forgot her ID and another tried to buy her a drink regardless. Yeah, don't do that! read more

When I walk in here I thank God that this place wasn't around when I was a student here at UH. The Den is very matter of fact-ly a sports bar. Imperial Pints, great beer/ale selection, laid back atmosphere and great patio...I feel for the habitual student with a strong case of senioritis. For the first campus pub if its kind since Coogs closed down a few years ago this spot stocks some good selection. The price is very competitive which remains especially true when The Den pours into those large 23oz pint glasses. I was slightly surprised by the higher end ales on tap. The "Sammiches" hit the spot. Had the opportunity to grub on a Reuben Sandwich. It was a triple decker! That alone will be more than enough to fill you up but then you realize they threw in a bag of chips... What draws people here is clearly the combination of price and congregation. I find it amusing that the patio where patrons chief on smokes is opposite the UH Recreation Center & Gym. Hah! If you are lucky there might be some ridiculously know it all students that swear they are the source of all things pretentious. It is fun messing with them. read more

The place is snuggled in the heart of U of H and to come here for a quick drink from a long day at school. Coming here to unwind the place is fairly decorated and isn't such a bad place. Nice seating and has a small patio for you smokers. They have a good selection on drink which is great. But, sadly their rude ass service is why I gave 2 stars. The 1st bartender I got was great and got our drinks promptly. But, the second bartender that came in around five "heavy set white guy" was up right rude. He had 2 or 3 customers in front of me but, pretended to be superman and tried to remember my order. I was with a group of friends and ordered for the table. Assuming the guy couldn't remember he was frustrated and quite frankly didn't appreciate my "bigger" order. I am paying for a service not an attitude. No need for this especially on a long day after class. This rude experience ruined my experience. read more

This is literally my favorite bar in Houston, here is why. It usually isn't overly crowded, at times it does but it does not last very long. They have a good assortment of beers and drinks, they rotate drinks in and out so there is a mystery to having beer here. The food menu is not the best, but it's good. I mainly come on Mondays when they have 2 dollar beers. I come with friends and just have a dandy old time. Watch a Monday football game. It's super chill. I enjoy coming here. read more

Its nothing special, the service is really poor and the prices arn't great. I had an experience in which the manager essentially hassled a friend for bringing in a bottle of water and she was never offered a drink or food for the hour that she was there sitting at the bar. I've also ordered drinks from a table and had the bartender just put them on the bar without giving me any notice that the drink was for me which is just annoying and really lame service (the bar was not busy). I hope that UH gets a new bar with all of its expansions and push for living on campus, because having no competition for this bar has not forced them to improve. read more

Everything you expect from a campus pub! Cheap drinks, attentive bar tenders, great rotating local beers, and daily drink specials (LIT tuesdays!). As a broke college student or a faithful alumni - this is your spot! TIPs and thoughts: - Get. The. Potato. Salad. seriously nothing like it.. - During test weeks/finals, the pub is always packed with students who are looking to de-stress. So you might have to wait a bit for your drink during those times.. - Get to know the bartenders, they are truely great people who also hang around the bar when they aren't working. One of the great trends that the Den has adopted since it's inception is the continuous rotation of craft beers. Just recently, a really awesome brewery called 8th wonder just opened up near downtown Houston. The Den was one of the first (if not the first) pubs/bars that started offering their beers on tap. Some other taps are: - St. Arnolds - Karbach - Buffalo Bayou - Southern Stars If you are into the Dos Equis, Bud Light, and Guinnesses of the world then they have that too. Something that is great for everyone, which is what should happen for the sole campus pub at UH. All in all, a great pub with some great drinks and food. The bartenders and the atmosphere totally separate this place from other bars/pubs that are around campus. Whether you are a cougar or not, you should definitely stop by. read more

The Den is basically what would happen if Walker, Texas Ranger decided to retire from Texas Ranging and open a bar. It's that good. Let's start, as I often do, with the atmosphere and service. From time to time, of course, there are your standard-issue frat boys doing jager bombs and popping their collars, but it doesn't detract from the overall environment. Generally, the bartenders are cool (especially as long as you tip a reasonable amount and aren't total jerks) and if it's not busy they can give you a valuable pointers on all aspects of drinking. One summer I went there 2-3 afternoons a week, and the bartenders helped introduce me to the wide world of scotch and bourbon--a kindness I appreciate to this day as I savor a glass of Glenlivet. The drinks are amazing. Everything is strong and generally cheap--their special punches I hear are amazing, and everything from rum and cokes to margaritas are solid. The selection of beers on tap is impressive, and the price is definitely right. Four bucks for a *large* Dos Equis? Yes please. At prices like that, it's easy to stay thirsty, my friends. The real surprise here, though, are the sandwiches. From honors-college inspired meat fiestas to the vegetarian-friendly "Veg-ina", the food is straight-up amazing (and reasonably priced, to boot). In short, I love The Den more than I have ever loved a woman. This is not an insult to the ladies I've loved, for I have loved them deeply--it's a testament to how amazing The Den truly is. read more

I love this bar. Sammiches are fantastic, drinks are cheap, and the people are great. 18 beers on tap, another 18 or so in bottles, and a full bar that stays well-stocked. Yes, it is a sports bar in the sense that there are 5 TVs and a big screen that are generally showing athletic events of some sort. But if you ask nicely, the bartenders will generally change the channel on a TV for you (that is, unless your taste in TV shows sucks...). The sammiches are delicious and I swear the baked potato salad MUST be laced with crack or something because I'm addicted. They usually send out food pretty quickly, but be patient since the kitchen consists of one person, one toaster, and one toaster oven. The bartenders are great and make an active effort to remember your name and drink if you come in fairly often. Just don't make the same rookie mistake as Delmer S. and try to order one drink at a time during happy hour for a table of 6 who can't seem to find their IDs and want to close out their tabs after EVERY drink (Aww...I remember MY first time at a bar....). "Heavy set white guy" is a nice dude but can turn into "cranky heavy set white guy" when people pull crap like that. You get a different crowd depending on when you come in. Its on a college campus, so yes, there will be "frat boys" and the like, so don't be surprised when you see plenty of students. The clientele is diverse and you'll always be able to find someone to sit down and talk to. There are times during the day where literally everyone knows everyone else there. Sundays are karaoke nights that get a good turnout pretty much every week. There's a parking lot right outside that's specifically for customers of the Den and the adjoining businesses, but since there's a wrecker service waiting to tow, DO NOT try to park there and go to class/the gym/campus. If you decide to ignore my warning, the tow company's number is posted on signs all over there and the lot where your car is isn't too far away. read more

There's a long list of regulars, and chances are if you go more than once you'll end up knowing half the customers and the bartenders. Even someone who is going there for the first time will feel right at home with the laid back students and alumni talking to anyone and everyone. I've been going here for almost two years. I always have good service. The bartenders are nice as long as you are nice. Since its a college campus you see a lot of idiots walking in with zero bar manners. Luckily a lot of the regular campus restaurant stupidity is avoided because they have a 21 and up limit. They seem pretty strict on it. I've seen them refuse service to underage people a few times. My two favorite sandwiches are the oh four four and the boxing kangaroo. They both come on an amazing hoagie style roll. The oh four four is a chicken buffalo sandwich. And the boxing kangaroo is a roast beef sandwich. Both amazing. I'm not a UH student or alumnus at all. I ended up here after a Dynamo game one night, since some friends wanted to watch UH football. What better place is there to watch the game? Sure they have some good prices for beer, but their sandwiches are delicious. The menu is limited.. literally sandwiches, potato salad/coleslaw but it is all delicious. The Den - Sports Bars Near Me - Houston, Texas

I went to The Den yesterday evening with a few of my friends expecting to have a good time and just chill. One of the bartenders comes up to us and explains that if anyone at the table wants to drink, everyone at the table would have to be ID'd and some of us were underage, so that wouldn't be possible. Keep in mind, the table next of us was a group of guys and a couple girls (who were white) that we knew (from asking and previous interactions with them) were under 21 and had been served alcohol. Those of us that were underage decided we would order fries to go and ended up waiting almost 40 minutes for a basket of fries. We had seen multiple other people who ordered after us receive their food before us and approached the bartender Byannkha about it, only to be met with attitude and told they ordered before us. When we finally received our food, we left and the friends that didn't leave with us told us that Beeanca looked at the other bartender after we left and pumped her fist up in the air in a celebratory mood. Like she was glad that we left. I think it's important to note two things, 1) all of us at the table were POC (mainly black and hispanic), and 2) at no point did we ever verbally argue with the employees/bartenders or show any aggression whatsoever. The only time we interacted with them was to order food and ask how much longer it would take before our fries are ready. So in my eyes, the celebration after we left and the 40 minutes it took for our fries to be ready, was extremely unnecessary and actually very rude. For these reasons, I do believe The Den (or at least these two particular employees, Biyanka and another male) is a discriminatory establishment I will no longer support. I would give them no stars if I could. read more

When it comes to booze, it's your standard full bar. If indecision strikes, there's a wheel you can spin for a random drink (and there's a free slot which makes it waaay more suspenseful). Also, they have specials every day lasting all day except Sunday (which is when they have free hot dogs). In terms of food, it's not "cheap bar food" because the Den is a bar AND grill. I've had pretty much everything on the menu and the sandwiches are a highlight for me; they're big and loaded and the hoagie rolls are the perfect texture. I love the environment and the way the bartenders engage with you, it makes for an all around awesome time! read more

We stopped in after AAC Championship game this past Saturday to have a couple drinks. The place was pretty busy, understandably after a GREAT WIN by the COOGS. Needless to say, I will never be back here. The guy wearing purple glasses behind the bar short changed me by $10. All I ordered were 2 draft beers, a Santo, and one of the 8th wonder beers. I am a consistent visitor to this place. After class, a place to drown out woes from a rough test, before the next class... It's a nice place to convene and chat with your fellow classmates. They only offer sandwiches and not your typical 'bar food'. The tables have hooks for your purses or backpacks, and you will see the occasional student doing homework with a glass of beer. Stopped by this bar before a UH vs. U of M baseball game. The bar is actually located on campus and was a short walk from where the baseball game was going to be at. Place is pretty small inside, but seemed like a hangout spot for UH students. Typical college bar - well drinks and beers. We sat at the bar so that it would be easy to get service.
