After my review I was contacted by Davey through Yelp asking for deets so an internal review of the situation could take place. I submitted those and Adam Jensen (the original person I had liked so much, now promoted to district overseer) came to see us to make it right. Adam explained why the tree was shaped as it was this time, because of the type of tree it is. That was helpful and I better understand their thinking. I no longer feel the tree was pruned improperly. I appreciate the gesture in his visit; there was an offer of a free treatment for the tree, as recompense along with a quote of $1,320 for potential additional services. It's not that any of this latest is bad. Davey made an effort, but it didn't have the feel of a genuine apology - which in the end is what this human wanted - to be heard and feel valued as a repeat customer. The "internal review" according to Adam had some he said/she said components. I realize perception is at play here, but you'll note I didn't blame, motive read, name call or label anyone (okay, there was the Keystone Cops reference). I told a story of what did and didn't happen. So the he said/she said response felt crummy. I didn't make anything up, paid promptly, and gave opportunities to converse fruitfully before reviewing poorly. I declined the offer of the free service and the additional proposal. I didn't want to indicate that my future business is a lock by accepting. Truthfully, I'm not sure where I am with them. read more

Work was completed to our satisfaction; debris/clean up met expectations. We have used Davey in the past and they have been consistently performed well. Tonight these guys started trimming tress across the street from my house at 8:30pm. So loud I couldn't hear my TV. Called 311. Then went to film them and take pictures. They claimed they were working under contract with PGE . Asked them to show me the contract. They walked away from me and continued to 9:45. There are noise ordinances they are required to follow but they don't care and neither does the city. Corrupt entitled corporate scumbags. read more

How rude is it to hear a truck backing up on your street in Belmont and hope it is Comcast coming to fix their Internet and Cable outage, only to find that Davey has parked a white truck in my driveway, preventing my car from exiting the garage, and parked a big, green truck attached to a wood chipper on the edge of the driveway, preventing my car from exiting onto the street. All for their tree service customoer down & across the street and all without asking my permission to come into my driveway and block my egress. No knock on my door e.g. "Excuse me ma'am, would you mind if we borrowed your driveway?" No offer to help me out for my inconvenience by putting my small branches into their wood chipper or removing the larger branch on the ground that is too heavy for me to left. No. Just the crew's assumption that it was OK to use my driveway and block me in, and then when I pointed out the problem to them some comments about how our street was small and maybe they should move their equipment down the hill and block the main street, which is Alameda de las Pulgas. The crew eventually did move their equipment but made me feel like I was in the wrong for requesting enough access to drive my car out of my driveway. And never an apology for their trespass. read more

On two separate occasions, the company cut down a bunch of trees and didn't clean it all up. They left behind a bunch of the branches on the easement hillside. We called, left messages and emailed the company and never got a response. read more

True Professionals! After the March windstorms, I was concerned about our Redwood trees. I called 5 companies in late April for estimates to inspect and trim the trees, and Davey Tree was one of the top 2 contenders based on knowledge and pricing. I really wanted an Arborist since I saw so many poor Redwoods trimmed to toothpicks - and absolutely didn't want that for OUR trees1 - and to assess the health of the trees. The scales tipped in their favor as they had done work for a neighbor who highly recommended them, and they could do the work a month sooner than the other company (ALL the tree companies in the area were backed up from the windstorms). From the ladies in the office doing the scheduling to the on-site workers, everyone was professional, thorough, and courteous. Adam understood exactly how we'd like the trees to look and provided his expert guidance. Brandon came out and did the fertilizing (I was concerned about the dog, but was reassured it's non-toxic, food grade, people/pet safe, and injected 12" below surface level) - he was terrific! He had a bit of a delay with the truck, and called to say he'd be 40 minutes later than expected. Love that level of courtesy! Adam came out the following day with Dylan and Fidel to go through the trimming plan. Not only do the trees look great (Dylan's a heck of a climber!), but they checked with me a couple times during the trimming (and thinning where necessary) to make sure it was what I wanted, confirmed our trees are "healthy and happy" from top to bottom, and they also did an excellent job of cleaning up afterwards - even putting the potted plants and yard furniture back in their exact places! So, Davey has been caring for our trees for several years now... not my choice but the HOA's choice. $ So under their care Two are dead- last one, exactly a year ago I believe was over fertilized and took about 3 weeks for ALL the leaves to fall off. No follow ups nothing. That's ok- if you cared I would know the game plan. So you come again this week to take care of the last of the third tree still standing and you had to block the street on Street cleaning day so the sweeper had to go around you. After you were done you didn't clean up all your work and you completely ignored all the debris you dropped in my driveway-I cleaned my driveway a few days before you showed up, and I'm now cleaning my driveway again and the curb where you left excessive amounts of tree trimmings behind, all under the tree you just killed. What am I not understanding about your service? Don't use these guys as it's a different crew every time they show up and clearly have no ambition to keep a service professional- read more

For the first time since I've lived in my home, I weathered this week's storms with high winds and rain worry free! After years of randomly pruning my Stone Pine and Maple, I knew it was time to get an arborist's opinion - large limbs were hanging precariously over my neighbor's roof and small branches were dropping for no reason. These trees are over 70 years old and I was concerned. When Davey's Arborist Adam Jensen came to assess, he gave me the insight I needed. He listened to my concerns, assessed the health of the trees and and shared a care plan including deep root fertilizer and limb removal. When I received the estimate, it was clearly broken down and Adam was available to answer questions. On the day of work, Adam and his team arrived on time, performed work safely, were professional and super talented. They used a 'bucket' truck to access limbs over my neighbors house, cleaned up thoroughly and finished early. When I offered to pay that day, I was informed I will receive an invoice for the work performed and can pay at that time - and yes, credit cards are accepted. I never imagined what a difference it makes to have certified / well trained professionals - who love trees as much as I do - bring my heritage trees back to their glory. I feel confident my trees will stand tall and proud, thanks to Daveys and their care. read more

I received a PG&E notification that the young elm tree in my backyard needed trimming. I checked and there was one branch that was within 6 feet of the high power lines, and agreed to meet the company representative, a young woman. We met and discussed this, and I told her that I only wanted the branch that was near the high power lines trimmed back, and that nothing else needed to be trimmed or should be cut. I foolishly believed that by talking to her, my wishes would be respected and Davy Tree would do as I requested. I agreed to let them trim the tree believing they would. The crew came out a few days later. I thought that because I had spoken to the girl, I didn't need to repeat my directions to the crew. The crew proceeded to mangle my formerly beautiful elm tree. They did a chop job and cut far more branches back they should have. Many of the branches were cut mid-way, which anyone knows is not the proper way to trim trees. They cut many small, thin diameter branches that were 12-15 feet away from the lines, totally unnecessary. The form of the tree is now ruined in the back. I watched in horror and did not say anything, as I did not want to distract the trimmer who was near the high power lines. There is obviously no communication between Davy Tree representatives and the tree trimming crews, who just do as they please without any regard to homeowner wishes or respect for property. The crews are not trained in proper tree trimming. I am very sorry I allowed Davy Tree to butcher my young Elm tree. I feel wronged and violated by this company. I should have stopped them before they began and will always be sorry i didn't. I will never allow Davy Tree to come anywhere near my trees again, and suggest that you do not either. Please hire a professional tree company, not amateurs like Davy Tree. read more

I do not recommend Davey Tree. Although I thought there previous work for me was somewhat overpriced, I respected there reputation, responsiveness & honesty. That's all changed. I paid them thousands of dollars to trim multiple large oak trees, resulting in several problems. They tore up the lawn with their equipment. After a few phone calls, they did finally come back & repair the damage. Some trees were not properly trimmed. The explanation was that "the canopy had leaves on it...when I was on site to provide the estimate". The work was never completed. It was also suggested that the Davey Tree arborist evaluate 2 trees. Upon his visit (within the same month) he recommended a chemical treatment & feeding which I approved. He also requested $2,700 to remove the deadwood. When I replied that I had already paid for this service, he said "I am inheriting an issue from the other office and it is not fair for me to lose money." Because I was "a long time customer" he suggested a reduction to $2,200. This was a money grab, clear & simple. I'm a consumer. Corporate organizational structure, related politics, & salesmen competition is not my concern. Assumably, Davey Tree is an integrated business with regional management. I don't usually write reviews. Contract was for 17 trees, many felled, balanced and pruned. Helping also all important fire break. Company and service was a great experience. Joseph Mentor offered exceptional customer interaction both before and during job. Of the seven quotes (due to size of job), I had Davey quote in my hand within an hour! (compared to having to call three others to chase quote) Davey teams suffered up the trees without complaint in the hot August sun here in Danville. The whole felling execution was meticulous. They were not the cheapest quote but only slightly, whereas some quoted us 2x Davey price. There is so much rip-off going on in this business it's unbelievable, some firms won't even quote until a fee is paid - best avoid. Davey are totally professional and our experience with Joseph and Davey team of professionals, excellent. Good job crew and what a great inprovement in our property! - well worth the investment. read more

I live in Livermore and had an urgent problem with an extremely valuable 3 way grafted self pollinating avocado tree. THe tree from all the rain last year began to gradually lean into the street despite all of my efforts to brace it. I called the 3 certified arborists in the area and only Davey Tree service was kind enough to return my call. Apparently this time of year is extremely busy but they made an appointment for one of their representatives to come to my home for a free consultation. A gentleman named "Dash" came to my home on time, and gave me a heads up call he was on his way. After a careful examination of my predicament he suggested a possible solution but made it very clear it may not be successful and the tree could unfortunately snap. Given the rarity and importance of the tree I decided to proceed with his recommendations. He returned in two weeks later with a crane, special anchor bracing, and three other members of his team and gradually and very delicately repositioned my tree after completely saturating the surrounding soil to increase the likelihood of success. My 30' tree is upright, viable, and produces the most delicious 7" long, 11" in girth avocados you've ever seen. Kudos for a difficult job well done. I'm a very hard person to please but 5 stars just isn't enough in this case . read more

It was a rainy day last week and we had to get to the airport. We opened the garage door and found a Davey Tree bucket truck completely blocking our driveway. We couldn't tell where they were working and finally honked (apologies to our neighbors because I know that honking is rude). No response. I grabbed an umbrella and went looking for someone who could move the damn truck. I finally found a guy sitting in a pick up who said he was the "safety guy" and he went behind a house and came back with someone who moved the truck. At this point I was not only annoyed, but wet and annoyed. I realize that sometimes it is necessary to block a driveway with a truck, but that should only be done with the approval of the resident. Don't hire these guys unless you really want to annoy and inconvenience your neighbors. I learned later that they were doing contract pruning work for PG&E, which somehow didn't surprise me. read more

I was awakened at 7AM by a crew sent by PGE. No prior notice about when work would be done. They butchered my redwood tree and left all the trimmed branches in my yard for me to clean up. Did I mention that I am a senior woman? When I asked when they would remove the branches, they acted like they couldn't speak English. I heard them speaking to the neighbor whose house they parked in front of, and their English was perfect. Jerks. If I could rate them zero stars, I would. We are very saddened by what transpired today. We are home owners who live next to a school We value our relationship and take pride in being good neighbors. We are having our yard redone and have been working with the school to minimize noise and disruption. So far so good. Unfortunately, our landscaper hired Davey Tree to remove a tree. He also got permission from the school to walk a few branches over their property to the truck. He explained everything to Davey. Here is what happened: 1. Davey Tree workers put up ILLEGAL parking violation signs in front of the school the night before, upsetting all the neighbors and students. The signs were designed to scare people into moving their cars. 2. Davey Tree rocks up at 7AM in a huge monster truck. The guys decide it would be a good idea to park its huge truck in the private school parking lot. They park in the PRESIDENT'S parking spot (really Davey Tree, you couldn't just parked in a regular space?). The President pulls in at 8AM and is livid. 3. Davey Tree workers leave a huge pile of wood in front of the school on the street. They decide that the front entrance to the school would be a great place to use extremely loud machinery to chop up the wood, disturbing all of the classes. 4. Our contact at the school told us we can never utilize their property again, due to the behavior of these jerks from Davey Tree. Davey Tree are a bunch of brutes who could care less about their clients. Don't use them if you care about your neighbors or your community. read more

i'm so disappointed. Davey has gotten too big, and no longer cares about doing a good job. in this incident, a complaining and uninformed worker (about the job) shows up to remove a stump. he didn't remove a large section of the stump, chewed up the fence with the blades of the machine and damaged the concrete edge of our driveway. if that's not bad enough, he covered it all with a huge pile of wood chips, and left. the worst part is, the damage couldn't be fixed and had to be cut out, which dramatically changes the look, and planned brickwork, which was in remembrance of a 60 ft, 150 ish year old tree. whatever, what's done is done. at no time did the job manager nor the regional manager show any evidence they could care less. this was handled so poorly. i had expectations of professionalism, my mistake. later conversation with corporate made things a little better. read more

This review is only for the bid process, as we ended up going with another tree service. Based on the great Yelp reviews, gave Davey a call to see about getting stump grinding and a tree removed. Davey is a national company with branches across the country. John came out to see the property to give us a quote. John was friendly and professional. The quote was good, but unfortunately we decided to go with another tree service because Davey's hourly rates were a bit higher. The others I contacted included Banning Tree Service, Mitchell Tree Service, Waller Tree Care, and Peninsula Tree Care. read more

I just had to post a review about how really great the crew was in doing everything so well. Now I can see that I have redwood trees, and with the pyracantha plant gone the view is beautiful to the creek and the neighbor's beautiful oak tree. Almost as good as getting the tree work done was the cleanup. The cleanup was so perfect that if you didn't know that tree work had been done, you would never guess how many tree cuttings were taken to the chipper. One man on the crew, who came later, even got all the Jacaranda flowers out of the pool, and swept up all the blossoms on the ground even though much of it was there before the tree work was started. We had Davey Tree Expert Company trim our trees in the front yard and remove one with TERRIBLE results. Two trees were over looked and another was very misshaped. They did a good job on the tree that was removed. When the two missed trees were brought to the arborist's attention he offered $50 off the bill because it was such minor work. I informed him that we were charged $250.00 and he asked for proof, which was supplied. Use them only for tree removal. read more

We had a dying 60 foot coastal pine removed from our back garden recently and Davey by far gave us the best estimate. I couldn't believe it could be removed in a day, but the team that came out was incredible. They worked fast and were friendly throughout. We also had a team from Davey trim the lollypop shaped ficus in front...it looks like a real tree now and again, they gave us the best price. I'd definitely recommend them. read more

Absolutely useless company! They have been contracted by PG&E to remove a tree in my backyard. After about four weeks they came out to inspect and schedule the job. A few weeks later after about seven different people had inspected the situation they came out to take the tree down just to realize the power first need to be shut off. PerThey then told me it would happen within two weeks, after two weeks I tried to connect with them, they then said within 60 days. The week before Thanksgiving they said it would be scheduled in mid February which is almost 90 days out. To date nothing have been scheduled, and they don't respond when you try to contact them. It's a complete bureaucracy and no wonder PG&E needs to deal with fires all over the place. Davey is useless and should not get any more jobs from PG&E. It's a disgrace. read more

Very disappointed with the service this company provided. Very high price, but informed, intelligent arborist who came out to look at the property. Over a month later they send a young man out to do the bare minimum of what they've estimated. Trees cut down, not ground down to grade, no miuratic acid to prevent new growth, shrubs trimmed very minimally. Canceled our appointment because people had storm damage. Then called at last minute to come back out and I was not home- but they come out anyway. Very poor customer service. Dollar is bottom line. Would not use them again. read more
