As someone who grew up in Black Rock and lives in the area, I am always excited when new businesses open in the neighborhood. I had been anxiously awaiting the opening of The Dapper Goose, so naturally I had to visit on the first soft opening night. I just had one drink, The Hecklinger, a wonderfully spicy rye cocktail with amaro and vermouth. This was as good of a drink as I've had in Buffalo, or anywhere for that matter, and so my first impression was overwhelmingly positive.
I couldn't get that cocktail or this place out of my mind, so the next night I returned. This time I started with the King Cole, a classic bourbon and fernet drink, nicely done. I moved onto the Better Loud Than Too Late, made with rum, strega, pineapple, BBQ and lemon. Wow! This one really blew me away. The flavor was unique, but somehow familiar at the same time. I ordered the blackened green beans as a snack, and they had a deliciously savory flavor, and a spicy kick. I am a fan of meat, but great vegetarian options abound here. Finally, I had the Clover Club, a refreshing cocktail of gin, vermouth, raspberry, lemon and frothy egg white. Everything I tried that night was outstanding.
Fast forward to the official opening night on Wednesday, and there I was again, this time with my significant other. The place had been open for four nights, and I had been there for three of them. What can I say? I was excited about it! I ordered another Hecklinger, and it was just as good as the first time. The companion ordered the Better Loud Than Too Late on my recommendation, and loved it. For food, he had the gazpacho, the country pate, and the ricotta with honey and almonds. I went with the Korean Fried Chicken with kimchi fried rice and spicy cucumbers, which I had been dreaming about ever since I first saw it. The gazpacho came out first, and it was something I would have never ordered. I am so happy that he chose it, because now that I've tried it, I want to go back for more. It tastes like summer in a bowl. The ricotta was fresh, nicely sweet, and served with delightful toasted bread. I didn't try the pate, but I'm told it was very good. Now, about that chicken... it is every bit as good as it looks and sounds. It was incredibly crispy on the outside, moist and juicy inside, and so flavorful. The kimchi fried rice had a nice kick, and the pickled cucumbers offset the sweet and spicy flavor of the chicken perfectly. To end our meal, we each ordered the concord grape tart with lime buttermilk whipped cream. It was served hot, and had a good balance of sweet and tart, with a nicely crisp crust. To top it all off, we were presented with the opportunity to try a wonderful Madeira, the perfect end to a great meal.
This place is really good. Not just good for Black Rock, or good for Buffalo. It needs no qualifiers. I can't forget to mention that the owner and all of the staff are incredibly welcoming, personable, and make the whole experience a pleasure, whether you are having drinks at the bar or dining at a table. We have since brought a group of friends for cocktails, and everyone was as impressed as we are. I can't wait to see what else they have in store for us. Welcome to Black Rock, Dapper Goose! read more
