Located in the heart of Black Rock, this restaurant does nothing for me. Best located in the Millennial-driven trendiness of the Elmwood strip or the poser-infested, over-priced joints opening along Allen Street, the menu, the drinks, the service and atmosphere reeks of pretentiousness. Which if you like this type of experience then the Dapper is for you.
Now this review isn't a one-time experience; this review is based on three overall "giving it another chance" experiences of visiting this establishment and the utter disappointment with each time.
First visit, my date and I walked in around 10:30 pm to grab a quick appetizer and glass of wine. There was about six or seven other people at the bar, one bartender, and what we thought was another bartender. We sat down and waited. Eventually pseudo-bartender-zombie comes to us without a hello, welcome or any recognition. In silence pours us two waters and hands us a menu then walks away. We sat there waiting. Looked over at the tall-bald headed bartender who's was fully engaged in conversation with the other patrons. And we waited. And waited. I looked at my date, she returned the look, and we decided to head up to "Hot Momma's Canteen" for welcoming service and cheaper food. Just then, after 15+ minutes of waiting for someone to recognize us (in a bar that clearly was not busy), our poor man's Patrick Stewart finally comes over and with no formal greeting asked "what can I get you?". I told him the exit sign and promptly left. Rudeness is what rudeness does.
Second visit, same date; second chance. This time we got there at 9:30 pm thinking perhaps an earlier time may get us better results. Different pseudo-bartender actually greets us, pours water, hands us a menus, then to our surprise a thirty-something bartender immediately greets us. Since I am new to the place, am interested in his take on the wine-list and menu so I ask him for some suggestions. He offers me none and stares at me as if I insulted him for wasting his time. So, I quickly order a pinot noir for both and we ordered on our own without recommendation or salesmanship. Guess it's not cool thing to do in The Dapper to ask for food-wine pairing. We order some sort of eggplant dish and the cheese-platter. Both came out and, we, were sadly disappointed with presentation and portion. The eggplant dish looked sloppy and bland (tasted that way) and the cheese platter was comprised a few thinly sliced pieces of cheese, a plop of quince, and portioned bread slices that we both knew they'd charge extra if you requested more. After no presentation or interest when slop 'n' plopping the food in front of us, 15 minutes later the bartender visits us with a blank look as if ordering thing was out of the question. I reluctantly asked what type of white the bar serves by the glass. Basically rolling his eyes at my question, he robotically rambles off few whites by the glass. Without hurting his feelings by having him actually engage with us, I order a reisling promptly for both of us; a thin, shitty overpriced glass of reisling, mind you. An hour later, with pseudo-bartender hovering over us throughout our conversation, got our check, paid $80 for two small appts and four glasses of wine, leaving hungry & disappointed with the experience.
The third and final last chance visit with same date resulted in coming in and seeing a full-bar and empty dinning-room tables. We asked the maitre'd is there a space at the bar opening soon, she frowned, left and came back with the answer of "not for another 20 minutes". Empty tables in the dining-room, we asked "are there tables open?" Our oh-so-welcoming host said, "No, they're for the people at the bar." Okay. So. We're waiting twenty minutes for a bar-seat for people who are at the bar who have empty tables waiting for them? Okay. So, that how we roll at the Dapper. I looked at my date, we agreed, once and for all, screw this place and headed down the Phoenix for an inexpensive evening of good service and food.
That was that with The Dapper Goose.
I am vehemently supportive of Black Rock and the lower West Side businesses especially restaurants. I will recommend these business and restaurants to patrons who visit my establishment. I do not recommend and will not recommend The Dapper Goose to folks unless people are seeking that NYC wanna-be pretentiousness complete with over-priced drinks and food. In the Black Rock district, with funky places like Hot Momma's, Casey's and even the shot & beer joint Barry's, this place does not belong. There are better pricey restaurants in the area including The Phoenix and The Roost one can spend their cash in. This place, The Dapper Goose, is best avoided and even if all these places were to be closed and this was the only restaurant option in Black Rock, go to Tops or Wegman's for take out. read more
