We wanted a quick snack while driving from the UP to Green Bay and came upon The Dairy Barn. As we drove in, we thought the place was inside of the nearby gas station, but we quickly found that it was a separate building with quite a number of cars and customers surrounding it. There was a nearby setup of picnic tables and all seats were taken, with people eating burgers, custard, and other treats. To order, there's a choice of either a drive through, or you can queue up at one of the windows in front. We just wanted a small snack and ordered two items. Service is quite quick; everything only took a couple of minutes to come out. Extra Small Pistachio Frozen Custard ($2) - This was the weekly special and we got the very last dregs in the frozen custard machine. We saw the employee using a spatula on the top of the machine to push through the rest of the custard. As such, we're not sure if the custard was the freshest and best churned or not. The sweetness of the custard, mint green in color, first comes through, followed by a bit of artificial pistachio flavoring. The strange thing is that we had pistachio frozen custard from another place the previous day and this tasted exactly the same. I wonder if everyone just uses the same commercial pistachio custard base and churns it differently? This particular one is quite smooth and creamy, but also a bit on the softer side and less dense than other frozen custard I've had. I can't complain when this is only $2 though. (4/5) Fried Cheese Curds ($4) - I read about the curds here on social media and I have to agree that these are quite good. The batter on the exterior is pretty thick and fried to a fantastic crisp. The interior is stretchy, milky, squeaky as they stick to the teeth and have a more firm chew. The exterior batter has quite a bit of salt added after it comes out of the fryer, making this a treat that almost begs for custard or some other sweet beverage/treat on the side. (4/5) I'm not sure there is anything that they actually make in house, but hey, the prices are so cheap and they execute everything well enough that it makes me not care. I wouldn't make The Dairy Barn a destination for food or anything, but it's a solid place to visit while you're on the road. Note that they change the special custard flavor every week starting on Wednesday until they run out, so if you insist on the special flavor don't wait until Tuesday! The butter and cheese are amazing. Specially the different flavored butter's! You can get original salted or unsalted butter, garlic flavored butter which is really good in mashed potatoes, or melted over veggies, or to slow cook steak in! And the cinnamon butter is good in toast, on top of warm cinnamon rolls. Great little stop for dairy products. Now if they just added fresh eggs for sale too, it could be your one stop shop! read more

They've got great food with great ice cream. There ice cream is at a family friendly price, and they give generous portions.

A nice place to pit stop and stretch. We got some yummy cheese curds, mini corn dog bites, chicken tenders and burgers. Everyone was happy with their meal. The soft serve ice cream is so good (& HUGE!). We ordered the extra small and it felt huge. Has one clean unisex bathroom (so if you have a large group, you'll need to wait). The drive thru is busy, but we stopped to eat there and it didn't take long to get our food. Get a pic with the cow statue in the picnic area off to the side (which is mostly shaded), or sit in the sun on a nice day. It was a great stop to relax and get some fresh air. read more

Great food! Cheese curds, burgers, and soft serve. We ate it too fast to take pics, but the kids had a great time! I did observe they could have a better flow for their drive through if they took orders on the East side of the building, and when you get to the West side order window, the drive around was worth the wait. Holy malted milk balls is The Dairy Barn great. You know, in Wisconsin, we get spoiled with good dairy products. And in most of the state, besides beer and cheese, frozen custard becomes the third corner in our food pyramid. (I love in Milwaukee, where seldom do we go out for ice cream--it's always custard.) So I forget how good ice cream can be. Then I visit The Dairy Barn just off Hwy. 141 in Lena, Wisconsin and it all comes back to me... good ice cream can give custard a run for the money any day. Smooth, creamy, and most noticeably, fresh. These traits blend together in a swirly array atop a crispy cake cone. The Dairy Barn doesn't skimp on the serving sizes either. If you're calorie conscious, don't hesitate to order an extra-small, because even a small is about the size of Lady Liberty's torch. They have food here, too -- burgers, fries, and stuff. I've had a few things, and they were fine, but the star of the show is soft-serve ice cream. That's why you should go to The Dairy Barn. Go. Go now. We found the Barn while traveling through the area. My hubby got a bacon cheeseburger, which was juicy and delicious. I got a pizza burger which was also very flavorful with tangy sauce on it. Cheese curds were good, and our 5 year old liked her Mac n cheese bites. The Sour Cream and Chive dries were well cooked, but missed the mark flavor-wise. I had a Mudslide pie for dessert and it was yummy and tasted homemade. We liked eating in the covered shade area adjacent. I didn't see a place to eat inside, so this is a summer destination. Kids will like the cow statue to play with and for photo ops. Adults will love the low prices. This is definitely an out of the way spot for locals, but the food hit the spot for our traveling little family. read more

I have been hunting for a while for a decent twist cone because apparently no one does them anymore. Which is a story for another time. Came yesterday when it was hot out and this x-small twist cone was still really big but for the price you cannot beat it. I think it was like $2.50 something for two cones. That is a steal for the quantity and quality you get. This is a bit of a drive north but if you are in the area a must stop. Their actual food looked amazing too. Worth the trip! read more

Appears to be popular among the townies - just east of hwy 141 by a truck stop - it's in a cozy little red barn with a statue of a cow in front. While driving home from up north, I got a sudden urge for ice cream and was pleasantly surprised to find this place. The turtle sundae hit the spot, but I wish I'd have added a brownie for 75 cents. A delicious aroma of fried beef and cheese wafted from the kitchen that made me regret only coming here for dessert. My husband plans to come back and get burgers and cheese curds the next time we pass through Lena. 5 stars for being cute, tasty, inexpensive, convenient, and not at all pretentious. They have ice cream, shakes, floats, burgers, fries, pies, soup, and pizza on the menu. Drive thru or walk up window. Great food and desserts, awesome turtles. Great smell as you walk up. They serve you at a window in the front of the restaurant, and there are some tables out front to sit on. Inevitably you wind up in a nice conversation with locals. Surrounded on all sides by farm fields. Extremely easy to get to, it's just off the highway. read more
