I can't believe I forgot to review The Curragower. I came across this place thanks to Colleen C's glowing review. I knew it was an absolute must-visit for when my sister and I had a couple nights planned in Limerick. Of course, I started with the chowder, which was fantastic albeit scalding hot. The brown bread served alongside was delicious. For our mains, my sister had the fish and chips while I decided to try the shrimp and chips. Both dishes were excellent - perfectly crunchy coating on the fish and shrimp and very fresh and flavorful seafood. This was one of our favorite meals of our Ireland trip and I'd absolutely recommend swinging by for a meal if you are in Limerick. read more

We had twenty four hours in Limerick and made a point of stopping in at The Curragower for a good serving of mussels (creamy pancetta) and chicken wings (the extra spicy), kicking off with the prawn pil pil and seafood chowder. Excellent food (you'd better be hungry if you order what we did, servings are hearty!). Great selection of local ale and superbly friendly service. We were told about the Curragower by several of the locals and they all advised "it is the best food in all of Limerick". With those stellar recommendations, we HAD to go for lunch. We ordered the Seafood Chowder and the Chili and Lime Calamari. The food was hot when it came to the table and very well seasoned. It was excellent food and I would refer any and everyone to this restaurant. Chloe was our server and she greeted us with a smile, incredible warmth and amazing service. The location on the River Shannon, across from King John's Castle is breathtaking. Enjoyed a long walk along the river to conclude a great afternoon. I can't find any fault with this place. We stopped in Limerick on our drive from Dublin to Dingle. I made it our mission to go to the top rated restaurant in Limerick... Cue The Curragower. It was a beautiful day, so we sat outside on the patio. Across the river you can see King John's Castle (for this American, it's a pretty exciting day when you can look at a real castle during lunch!), and the seating and weather were perfect. Service was pretty friendly. I had seafood chowder, which was amazing and came with brown bread and Irish butter (again, pretty special for this Yank). The chowder was full of good seafood - fish, shellfish, shrimp, mussels, etc. Great flavor and filling. The Guinness was delicious and cheap. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a meal in Limerick. Added Bonus: met another traveling Cal grad. She and her kids were spending 3 weeks in Europe. As fish and chips and pint of Guinness go ours was fully enjoyed; served with minty mashed peas and their own tartar sauce, which is delicious as well. We shared a seasonal rhubarb and apple crumble; a buttery slightly sweet wedge of heaven, and a Sticky Toffee pudding. If you've never had sticky toffee pudding this is the place to give it a try. The wait staff are wonderful and attentive; very helpful with their suggestions and service. We were pleased with everything we were served. And as an additional note the place had many patrons and the service remained good throughout our meal. They have a covered patio (smoking allowed - Californians beware i.e. non-smokers). The patio looks over the river and across the way is King John Castle. A lovely view with good food and drink, what more can a traveler need? Certainly not much. ... we came back later in the week and an had equally good food, service and drink. We really enjoyed the servers. So nice and polite. read more

We got here a little early and the staff were extra-friendly and helpful. They seated us on the terrace which has a great view of King John's castle actos the river. I went with some friends who are food lovers so we ordered a variety of entrees, appetizers, and beverages. Everything that we ordered was excellent! Their calamari came with a chili jelly and a lime roasted with molasses (I'm guessing), and some other tasty ingredients. I also ordered mussels which were very tasty and came in a pot with so many that we couldn't finish them even though we were sharing. If you're in town, this is the place to eat. If you're at the Cliffs of Moher, if you're in Dublin, I don't care, this place is worth going out of your way for! Absolutely delicious! We stopped by here on our way to Kerry, and ended up changing our pre-planned route back to Dublin to go through Limmerick just to come back to this place, it was that good. I don't eat seafood of any kind, but when my lunch date ordered the chowder, and we heard so many good things about it, I felt like it was worth trying. It's award winning, after all. So I tried it and immediately knew we had to come back so I could have a bowl of my own. It's incredible, creamy goodness that everyone must try! The brown bread they serve with it is perfect. I had the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich which was fantastic, moist chicken with crispy batter that didn't feel greasy at all. They also do great onion rings, which is a rare thing. But the chowder. Seriously. The rest of the trip I had chowder everywhere we went because I was hooked, but nothing compared to this place! Any time we are anywhere remotely close to Limerick, we will be coming here. No doubt. Staff is very friendly and helpful, we sat outside with our dog and it was pretty cold, so she turned on the heaters just for us which was very nice. Wing's are so good. It may sound strange but the chicken in ireland tastes more like chicken-- I mean that whole-heartedly. I never thought I'd be ordering Hot Wings in Ireland but they were fantastic. (Yelpers recommended it) The bread they served reminded me of Banana bread without the bananas (it was good). The Seafood Chowder was loaded with Seafood. The restaurants charm and view were beyond spectacular. I would go back here or to take friends in a second. The bread on the chicken sandwich was also very good. The Tomato slaw wasn't that flavorful but the chicken and bread--MORE than made up for it. Worth it! read more

This place has great reviews on Yelp. So when we were in Limerick, we decided to give it a go. It did not disappoint! We walked in and we were greeted by a friendly staff member. We wanted to sit outside so she showed us to the patio. It was a bit chilly, so when a table opened up under the heaters, we grabbed it! It was the last night of our 2 week vacay and we were "fooded out". We wanted a casual place to relax and talk about out trip. We ordered Guiness to start. Hubby and I ordered the seafood chowder and the other couple each ordered a ginger carrot soup. Each couple also ordered a hamburger to split. The seafood chowder is enough for a meal. It was a bowl FULL of shrimp, mussels, salmon, etc in a creamy broth. On the side was moist brown bread and butter. Nom, nom, nom. See my picture. This was THE BEST chowder I have ever eaten. I'm only sad that it was on vacation and I will likely not be back there. The burgers were good, not great. But seriously, I didn't care after that bowl of chowder. I debated giving this place 4 stars just because I don't think every dish is as good as the chowder... but ya know, if you go here and don't order the chowder, it's on you! The staff was friendly and attentive. You also get a nice view of the river from the patio. I will now be searching for anything that compares to that chowder. Don't be fooled by the size of this place when you enter. Even walking to the back will have you thinking its a small venue. Their is also a hidden upstairs large outdoor patio that you wouldn't know existed if you hadn't noticed people walking by and disappearing. It was too chilly for us but locals love it. Had to give their fish and chips a go. I had the seafood chowder since it seemed to be a local favorite as well. Local Irish beers came first, of course. The staff was outstanding with everything. We tried several of their local beers, of course. Loved the Smithwick Red ale. Yummy. The local Limerick blonde ale was Ok but not our favorite. The fish and chips were very good. The portion was huge, enough to feed both of us. It was served with mashed peas., which was just OK. The chips were a large cut and crisp. The fish batter was crisp (just a little thick) and the fish was thick, tender and steaming when served. We truly enjoyed the meal. The seafood chowder was good but needed a bit more seasoning. The fish and shellfish were fresh and tender. All in all it was quite good. It was served with 2 slices of Irish Brown bread, which is slightly sweet, and quite delicious. I'm finally getting around to writing a review of one of the best seafood restaurants I'm visited anywhere in the world. First it was so good, my wife and I actually visited the restaurant two nights during our 5 days in limerick. The seafood chowder was amazing. It had a perfect balance of fish (salmon, white fish, prawns, etc), potatoes and carrots. We ordered it both nights and it is more than enough to share for two people. My wife ordered baked sea trout both nights. I ordered fish and chips and their shrimp scampi (not the US scampi - more like large/tasty fried prawns). All of our dishes were excellent. If your in Limerick around john's castle, you should drop in. read more

Other than the view which is amazing, the food was less than satisfactory. Calamari was chewy and no flavor. Chicken wings were spicy but over sauced. It took 10 minutes to get a waiter's attention to bring us more napkins and catsup. And, finally, I've never had a whiskey pour so small. Sorry, come for the view only. read more

We were walking around Limerick and had been told about 'The Gower' by some friends. We stopped in for a beer and cider, then ordered the calamari and an order of the sweet and sticky wings. The calamari was very good, my wife loved the lime mayo sauce while I enjoyed the sweet pepper relish. But let me tell you, the wings won me over! They had a hint of heat, but were very tasty! And the crunch, wow! They were fried with maybe a light coating of flour, but that helped hold the sauce in place. I came here with my family twice and had a great time on both occasions. Great atmosphere, fantastic outdoor area and a good selection of drinks available. We didn't try a large selection of the food but the things we did try were tasty, good value and delivered quickly. Most staff were attentive and very friendly. Unfortunatey the guy behind the bar tried to tell us we couldn't come in for a drink without a reservation, and it felt like we had to argue to get a spot outside where it was nearly empty. The same guy then had trouble remembering a simple order of 3 drinks, then later he tried to tell my wife that they didn't serve the kind of beer that I had already had earlier! "Best chowder I've ever eaten." - Dad, age 64. Score one for the yelpers! Limerick was our midday stop on our trek from Carrick-on-Shannon to Kerry. My brother (an avid yelper as well!) suggested we stop at Curragower for lunch after reading the rave reviews, and all the stars aligned from there. A beautiful patio overlooking the river, where one table remained for us. A new menu launching that day with upscale Irish delicacies (it's a thing!). Our group enjoyed numerous beers, great service, fish and chips with minted mushy peas, bacon cabbage rolls, seafood chowder (believe the hype!) and a big old burger. Not to mention several plates of Irish soda bread for our 2 year old, who is a big fan of "Ireland toast." Everything that hit the table was a dream, thumbs way up. A super relaxed, nice setting (flowers, clean decks, nice loo) -- just across the river overlooking the bridge and King Johns Castle. Thanks to yelp this restaurant was where we wanted to eat even before leaving Dublin. The food was as brilliant as other reviewers have described but the value was more surprising than expected. €34 paid for starters and main meals for two of us. We shared one seafood chowder between us, which was prudent as it gave us some chance of dealing with the main dishes that followed. I had the fish and chips which was brilliant. Two large portions of cod in crispy beer batter. One portion would have been more than enough but it went so well with the pint of guinness that I managed to finish it completely. My wife had the burger which looked so delicious when she saw them being served to other customers that she just had to have one. It too was enough for two people and was mouthwatering. But even though she could eat only half of the amount served I could not help her because I was swollen to capacity dealing with my own plate. The seafood pie looked terrific but I have only one belly and will have to sample it another time. The staff of the Curragower were exceptional. They were naturally friendly and attentive and their attentions did not seem forced or false in any way. The restaurant was very busy on the Sunday afternoon we visited and when I mentioned that the guinness I had ordered was a little delayed, a manager arrived quickly with a a pint, apologies for any delay and told us the pint was with his compliments and would not appear on our bill. Now you have to admin that €34 for one starter and two main courses is brilliant value, and if you consider the views of the Shannon and central Limerick from the terrace and the friendly atmosphere of the bar and restaurant, you will understand why it is a place that we absolutely must revisit if only to check out the seafood pie. read more

Great comfy bar overlooking the Shannon river. Several little cozy rooms to choose from. Go in and seat yourself. Waitstaff is very friendly and curteous. The chowder soup is a must! I had the kitchen sink which was a full Irish breakfast plus French toast. It was all delicious and made to order. Ingredients were fresh and tasty. The helping size was generous and I couldn't finish everything. We sat in the back k called the snug bar which was quiet and warm by the kitchen. The rugby game was on TVs and was grand to watch! I went here with my mother on a recent trip and we were beyond happy with this restaurant. It's small and cozy and the majority of the dining room is a separated room beyond the main room. We had a few pints, the fish and chips, and onion and feta puff parcels. The food was perfection. The fish was light and flaky, and cooked just right. As a previous reviewer related, good decision. This has been my third go at Curragower. Seafood Chowder each time. It's absolutely the best chowder I've had anywhere, hands down. The seafood must be added just prior to serving since it is not overlooked and is very fresh & tender, unlike others that must sit in the pot simmering for hours. If I was told I could only eat this chowder for the rest of my life, I would die happy. Add a pint of Guinness or Bullmers and what more could one ask for? I've also had the fish & chips. Very good. Crisp, beer battered haddock and equally crisp. This will be a must do each time I come to Limerick which I do quite often. I suggest you do too. read more

One of my top go to places in Limerick. Food is always spectacular, staff friendly and fairly priced. I love showing this place off. The chowder is classed as a starter but the portion is satisfyingly huge and he fish is fresh. So far I haven't found a nicer chowder in the country. The specials here are exactly that, special.
