Most of the places in the Digby-Yarmouth region are closed for the season in the winter or for the holidays. Not this place. We drove through a harrowing snowstorm for two days, and caught the Saint John-Digby ferry just in time. Made a beeline to the Shore Thing. The host was almost in tears telling us that he had no tables for us, but to come back in 45 minutes. So we did. Once again, a huge bowl of the best chowder ever. Cute place with over the top nautical stuff nailed to most spaces on every wall. There are indoor tables and a bar-type arrangement outside overlooking the water. The menu is gigantic. For us that usually means the kitchen is going to have a hard time perfecting the dishes and I'm afraid that's what we found. The Digby Grilled Scallops in a butter sauce were ok but nothing to write home about. It was accompanied by warm carrot chunks and about 6 peas in a small glass. We learned to expect excellent sea food in a variety of locations in Nova Scotia, and many also claim to be "the best of" this or that. We loved the food at this place, and will not contribute to the "best Scallop" debate as we enjoyed them in many places and best is a matter of personal preference. Suffice to say the Crow's Nest version lived to the expectation! We will however nominate them to the most welcoming, friendly AND dog friendly we ever encountered! Just seeing us parking in front of the restaurant the attendant/owner/ friendly host opened the door for us, and seeing us engaged with our dog invited us to bring her in, rather than leave her in the car! We sat in the covered outdoor section, and enjoyed a fantastic dinner with no worries about our furry friend left alone in the car. The food we picked consisted of delicious Scallops, exquisite seafood chowder (the one loaded with enormous amount of fish, lobster, and other seafood goodies that is typical of Nova Scotia), and beer on tap. It was a lovely ending to a day of hiking on Digby Neck - well worth a long drive time it took to get there after the hike. Thank you! read more

The burgers and fries were hot when they arrived to our table. The fries appeared to have a very dark appearance, but they were okay. The burgers were pretty good and quite juicy. The service was good. There is a strong over abundance of fish smell when you walk in, but it's know for it's fish meals so I guess that goes with the territory. So many things are just so right about the Crow's Neat...a charming spot in beautiful downtown Digby, Nova Scotia. Gorgeous outdoor seating is available, a full bar, knowledgeable service staff, a menu complete with seafood specialties and local favorites. We stopped here for lunch on the recommendation of a local, who saw us deciding between a few places for lunch, and the did not disappoint. My first course was their seafood chowder. I am not lying when I tell you there was so much yummy fish that there was barely any room for broth! Digby is known for scallops, so of course we both had seared scallops. Nicely sized gentle puffs of seafood sweetness, with just enough pan searing to bring out every bit of taste. No room after this much for dessert. As we were walking on the Main Street of Digby NS- we saw this menu. Another family walking past us said the best restaurant -so our decision was made for us.... They had a great outdoor patio with a great view of the fishing fleet of Digby. It has been recommended by another gentleman from the public works Dept of Digby to get the pan fried scallops - a Digby specialty since they were harvested here. I ordered a dinner special with the scallops and a side Caesar salad. Both did not disappoint... the salad had chunks of bacon and the dressing was alight flavorful dressing. Very nice cozy place with a warm atmosphere!The hostess and waitress were awesome. Really friendly. I was seated and served quickly. The bar seating on the outside deck overlooking the harbor is perfect. Beer mugs were chilled and the waitress replaced my mug when I ordered a second beer. Scallops were fresh. Can't really rate this fairly as we just stopped in to try the "famous" Digby scallops so that is all we ordered. The place is lovely and the staff very friendly. The Crow's Nest was a perfect place to begin our lobster tour of Nova Scotia. We were able to place our order and receive it from a pick up window. Staff indoors were all wearing masks. It was a little chilly that day so instead of eating at the outdoor picnic tables we opted for eating in our car! Lobster rolls were pretty good! We enjoyed the homemade fries as well. Digby claims to have the best scallops in the world. I was looking forward to a great seafood meal with Digby scallops. I ordered a two way combination of fried clams and also deep fried scallops. Living in New England, I have ordered this combo many times at a great many restaurants, and have always been satisfied. For other restaurants I always got a good portion of fried, whole belly clams, a generous portion of delicious scallops, French fries and cole slaw. But what was brought to my table at the Crows Nest Restaurant was disappointing to say the least! Yes, there was a generous portion of fried clams. Yes, there were plenty of French fries, and a small cole slaw. For scallops, what was brought to me was the smallest portion of scallops that was ever served to me in my life! There were 6 scallops that were each about the size of a very small cherry tomato served to me. They all fit in a very tiny bowl, with plenty of room left in the bowl. Were the scallops tasty? Yes! Were they the very best that I have ever had? No! I've had scallops that were larger, tasted every bit as good, and had an adequate portion size hundred of times in many, many other restaurants. If the portion size of the Crows Nest Digby scallops was equal to what I routinely get at other restaurants, I wouldn't have a problem. But to brag about the scallops while serving a minuscule portion, is just unconscionable. read more

Honestly it was just okay. Hubby got the scallops pan fried (we do appreciate the Crow's Nest offering this option as opposed to some of the other restaurants where everything appeared to be fried). Scallops were very fresh but could have used another 30 to 60 seconds in the pan (ie were nearly raw in the middle and had barely any browning/sear on them), and were underseasoned and served on a damp plate (maybe just the liquid from the scallops), so ended up a little soggy. I had the chowder, which was tasty but had a lot of potatoes in it. All the restaurants on the Digby waterfront are pretty basic, so this may have been the best option, but for all the braggadocio about Digby scallops we expected a little more. read more

Fish and lobster itself was good. The mash potato was cold/room temp. The seafood platter. Meh. Nothing stood out. Pan fried fish was mild in flavour. Scallops were okay. Fried clams were also bland. Kids crabby Patty (fish and chips on a bun) was okay. My kid finished it. Service wasn't terrible, but was catering to your needs fully. Need to get up and ask for coffee refills. I would recommend here on a budget. But if you splurge a little more. The fancier restaurant next door was better food and service. Food okay. Service was okay. This is a keeper. I'm not one to want to be enticed by what I believe to be a tourist trap. This small restaurant is right on the main drag with water view and a small outside deck for good weather days. We were in town in October so we came in mostly because it was one of the few open. The reviews were mostly positive but I was still skeptical. I don't think it was my low expectations that made me so enthused. I wanted the pan seared Digby scallops and they were so delicious! I also had the seafood chowder that was OUT OF THIS WORLD! If you want it all it's in this soup. I ordered the cup because I wasn't starving. I can't imagine anyone finishing a whole bowl when I saw the size and content of the cup. It was truly a meal in itself. This may be a great place for tourist but it was clearly occupied by 50% locals and I believe the food is the reason! read more

Wish I'd known! We ought to have come here first. We did a mini foodie tour, starting at Dockside, several doors down with a shared plate of 8 scallops $28, plus $2 for a better salad (with tax, tip, $40- see review). Here we had the option of 10 scallops or 5 scallops and 2 pcs of fried haddock, our choice for $17 (tax and tip: $ 24) So much cheaper! The scallops were more flavorful with the garlic butter than Dockside but slightly less tender, barely noticable. We enjoyed a baked potato for a change in the sides. The disappointment was the batter on the haddock. It was soft, even a bit damp, and lacked the light crispy and flavorful quality of our meal in Lunenburg (Fish Shack). Not the best choice on the menu. This restaurant is cozy, casual and has a great view, being along the harbor. I like the quaint feel and it defiantly appears more patronized than Dockside. So my advice? Start here! And it's open until 7:30! read more

Locals at the Digby pines golf resort suggested we skip some restaurants and eat here. We were glad we listened. I ordered the full size chowder - loaded with lobster, scallops, fish and potato in a milky broth. Delicious and filling. Followed that with the seafood platter - seared scallops, pan fried haddock and fried clam strips. The stand out on the plate were the clam strips - meaty and sweet, the best I've ever had, and I've had a lot. Oh yeah, portions here are HUGE. We enjoyed our visit and based on this, visited their location on Shore Rd. W. - that location is packed, definitely make reservations if you plan to eat there. The more I eat in places like this, the more I avoid expensive pretentious fine dining establishments and the ensuing "WTF was that about?". A local resident highly recommended this spot - say no more. My scallop burger was simple perfection with moist scallops that totally filled the fresh kaiser bun, while my partner's haddock tidbits were flash deep-fried, and again perfectly moist. Super-fresh locally sourced fish makes all the difference, and the Crow's Nest has plenty! The home-cut fries were outstanding with a slight crispiness and no hint of rancid flavour from old oil, as is more than often the case. A nice little serving of coleslaw, too. At $12 for each of our massive orders, I'd still give it full marks if the orders had been half the size. No local craft beer, unfortunately - stick with coffee or pop or water. If we only lived closer...... The food is out of this world goodness and fresh. I had the seafood fettuccine that was the best I have ever had. The hubs had a 2 pound lobster cooked to perfection.
