You can't go to Digby and not get a feed of scallops, and what better place than an actual seafood…read moremarket? When my wife and I showed up on a Saturday afternoon, I was in luck because the scallops and fish combo was one of the daily specials, clocking in at just $21! My other half, not being a big seafood person, opted for a cheeseburger. Having arrived well after the main lunch crowd, we had our food in quick order and ate indoors, taking a break in their AC. My plate of brown, deep-fried goodness wasn't exactly a poster child for the Canada Food Guide, but it sure was good! The scallops had a light dusting of breading before hitting the fryer, and they were a perfect doneness - not too soft, and not at all rubbery. Being minimally adorned as they were, the sweetness of the scallops took its rightful spot at centre stage. The fish portion of the plate was comprised of three small filets of haddock, with a light breading on the exterior. I do prefer a crisp, airy beer batter, but the quality of the fish stole the show, as it flaked easily in solid chunks, but wasn't mushy or shredding to tiny bits. It was one of those times where the fish was so good that I only used the tartar sauce for my fries. Said fries were the standard, from-frozen fries that I think of as "diner fries", but they were good and crisp on the outside, with fluffy interiors, so they were about as good as they can be. On the upside, the fries acted as a delivery mechanism for one of the best tartar sauces I've ever had! Heavy on the minced pickle chunks, the tartar sauce had a sweetness to it that reminded me of mustard pickles (in the best possible way). When a place does a simple thing like this so well, it really make all the others that just do packets of Kraft look even worse. Although far from being the star of the show, my wife's cheeseburger was a solid, diner-style burger. Carla's was just what I was looking for while in Digby - down home style seafood that's well-executed without pretension.

How could we pass through Digby without trying some scallops? Wanting a quick lunch rather than a fancy meal this place looked ideal. It was. I thought it was only takeout but they do have a dining room, where we sat. Order at the counter and they bring it when ready, but it's not full service. We both got a fried scallop plate, served with fries, coleslaw, and homemade tartar sauce. The scallops were very large, absolutely fresh, and with a light batter. Generous portion size. The fries were decent and the tartar sauce was interesting, heavy on the pickles. Coleslaw light and tangy rather than creamy, but as usual in seafood platters, not enough. There's also fish&chips, shrimp, and a few things like burgers for non-seafood-lovers. And poutine! There's also a seafood market next door. Lots of options. Since we were traveling fresh fish wasn't needed but I did buy some dried salt cod; I can't seem to resist when I see it. Now I need to figure out what to do with it.

We had just gotten off a whale watch, and it was close to many restaurants' closing times…read more Everywhere we tried to go was too close to closing to let us in or they were closed. This was our only option before a 2 1/2 hour drive to Halifax. The service was good. Our server was very nice. But the food was... mediocre. The salad dressing came in little Kraft packets. The meals came with two veggie sides and mashed potatoes. The veggies -- carrots and parsnips -- tasted either canned or boiled or both. The mashed potatoes were clearly instant. I can't remember the last time I went to a restaurant and had food that was lower quality than I make in my own kitchen. The scallops were decent which was the only consolation as we had been looking forward to scallops from Digby since before our trip. The restaurant could also use a refresh. The inside looks like it's 1986. The air conditioning was also messed up and the inside of the restaurant was so cold I had to go get a long sleeved shirt from the car. And I am never cold. I rarely leave bad reviews, but I had to tell my honest opinion. I didn't even take pictures of our food which goes to show how disappointed I was.

That quickly changed when we were seated at a table next to 2 fairly vocal kids and right next to the kitchen door. All this despite the fact that there were many empty and nicer tables in the restaurant. Our waitress was pleasant and grandmotherly. She recited the specials as she poured the water and then left us to ponder our options. I chose the Scallop Special, my husband picked the clams. When she returned we gave her our order and when she asked what I'd like for a side, I responded with my standard question about the fries...homemade or frozen? I do not do frozen fries.... particularly in a restaurant. The waitress said the fries were homemade, but moments later turned to admit that they were now "regular fries" as the restaurant was closing in a few days. "Will that be ok anyway?", she asked. I chose the rice pilaf instead. The plates came quickly and my ever-growing fear was confirmed. Skimpy portions of the good stuff, and it all looked extraordinarily bland. There were about 7 quarter-sized scallops sitting on a leaf of lettuce. I had ordered them pan fried and they were, but for too long. In all fairness to the chef, pan frying such small scallops properly is not an easy task. The rice pilaf appeared to be Minute Rice cooked in a soy sauce broth. The plate was loaded with fresh carrots and turnip, but these were boiled and plain, and completely unappealing. Troy's plate looked similar, but his deep fried clams were significantly tastier (although still rubbery) and his frozen fries actually looked appetizing next to my little ricey lump. If you're a blue hair on a tour bus you might very well like the homey atmosphere, the kitschy decor, and the taste-free food. If you're anyone else, I'd recommend giving the Captains Cabin a miss. This is a pricy tourist trap, plain and simple, and it's sad to see our delicious local seafood and produce being dressed down to this degree.
