We celebrated my birthday at Italian by Night, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. We shared everything and it was delicious, especially the arancini and polpetti. I ordered the Scoglio again because it was so memorable the first time, and it was just as amazing. The seafood was perfectly cooked, the pasta was fresh, and the flavors were outstanding. The staff made my birthday feel special with complimentary champagne, which was such a thoughtful surprise. The service was friendly, attentive, and never rushed. He was very attentive, we never had to look for him he was always there. A real customer service professional! The rest of the staff was also very helpful above and beyond our expectations. First of all the place has really nice decor and the staff was very welcoming and the service was really top tier! But the food was next level! I read over the menu tonight while visiting from out of town with some dear friends and honestly was having the hardest time deciding. I really wanted a pizza that are hand formed and dressed with house made ingredients, but I also wanted a seafood spaghetti dish that sounded really awesome but I couldn't decide. So I asked our server if I could have the seafood dish as a pizza instead of spaghetti and she said she would ask the chef. A minute later the chef approached the table and said that she probably could do it but the oven would destroy the scallops and shrimp and made some delightful recommendations of the house made fennel sausage on white sauce pizza with the scallops and shrimp cooked in garlic in a pan and then added to the pizza as it came out of the oven. "Brilliant" I thought and said yes to her amazing suggestions. In just a little while, chef delivered her masterpiece to the table and just look at the pic! This is a creation to behold! This is culinary art at its finest to look at and to taste?! Truly delicious and amazing. The scallops were like tiny white tender and sweet, perfectly cooked meat cookies, paired with shrimp and sausage and mozzarella cheese on a rich and creamy white sauce topped hand thrown pizza. I'd like to tell you that this dish, this chef, this atmosphere and this place has gotten me excited to find and post about amazing places after a couple years of silence! My partner and I came here for a date night while we were visiting from Ontario. It was recommended by a friend in New Brunswick. I love the decor and atmosphere of the restaurant. It was great for a date night, but would also be good for a casual dinner, drinks with friends or colleagues, a family celebration. The service was outstanding. Our server was friendly and attentive. Delicious food, attentive staff, upscale environment, good selection of beverages, great place for a special night out. The staff is quite attentive, even when the place is bustling with customers. They tend to be very friendly and accommodating. The menu has a good variety of flavorful food as long as you don't mind a heavy hand with the salt. Unfortunately, the pizza was basically inedible because the exterior of the crust had salt added as well, but the rest of the food was great, even though it was also even more salty than most places. The flavour combinations of each dish is inventive and enjoyable. The appetizers are just as good as the entrees and can even be sufficient as your entree if you like. There are several tables right in front of the full windows with a nice street view. The full bar is nice with a good amount of seating too. There is a private room in the back that can accommodate up to twenty people for meetings, which is recommended for large groups since the dining area can get pretty loud. read more

From great cocktails and an excellent wine list to spectacular appetizers - every thing we ordered was a delight. The arancini that began our meal set a very high bar but everything else was just as tasty. Waitstaff was every bit as good as the food. The pizza crust was thin and crispy and not made soggy by the toppings. Beet salad was yummy. The risotto was a bit salty for my taste. The noise level was quite high at the start of our meal, but leveled off toward dessert and we were able to hear the nice music in the background. What a fantastic restaurant! Had a great martini, dinner, and dessert here last night. My spouse had the greatest calzone of their life. It was unlike any pizza joint calzone -- it was definitely a thoughtful, upscale version. I had salmon, which was delicious. For dessert, we had crème brûlée and the pavlova. Okay, let me say, I've made pavlova several times and rarely order it out because I've had some misses in the past. Pavlova should be crisp on the outside and chewy inside. When it's not, it's disappointing. This was the best -- sour rhubarb inside the chewy center and sweet strawberries on top of the crisp exterior. What a genius idea of contrasts and complements! The restaurant is clean, had a nice atmosphere, lovely artwork and soft music playing. The staff was very nice. For appetizers we ordered arancini and meatballs. Some of the best we have had! We both ordered specials-fresh ravioli stuffed with beef tenderloin and caramelized onions and the beef tenderloin with bacon/mascarpone mashed potatoes and grilled veggies. Both were delicious! Came here with some friends and had the best time. The space is large and open but seemed intimate at the same time. And it smelled Italian as soon as you opened the door. Firstly, our waiter was perfect, knowledgeable, attentive and also left us alone! We had cocktails and wine. Cava was dry, how I like it. And a delicious Spanish Tempranillo recc by our waiter. It was perfect and didn't break the bank. We liked it so much we bought some the next day at NBLC. We shared several appetisers including the meatballs, the calamari fritti, and the octopus which was sous vide and then grilled. OMG people! So tender and charred, served on a schmear of hummus. We shared the Scoglio which was a pasta and fresh seafood, the veal scallopini, the ravioli. Certainly no complaints! Even the bread was delicious! Dessert was tiramisu and Affogato. If you've never had that before, like our dining companions, you will be blown away We will def be back. read more

At another restaurant we had mediocre food the previous night and was looking for something to reset our vacation experience. We picked well. This restaurant is a true gem and we were lucky to get our reservations. The place was packed, so I would encourage just dropping in. The seating is spacious and you feel like you are in a very intimate setting though there are many diners. They had coat hooks next to our table so we could sit comfortably. Danielle was our server and we hit the jackpot. She was personable yet professional. Knowledgeable yet down to earth. We know she had several tables but she managed to make us feel like we were her only customers. We ordered bruschetta and our server said that it comes in servings for 3, but because we had 4, she would add an extra. I'm used to small toasts. No. This was a big piece of grilled bread heaped with fresh tomatoes and herbs. I am a risotto fanatic and I knew what I wanted immediately. My daughter ordered spaghetti pomodoro. We split our dishes so we could have both. My serving was rich and huge and everyone at the table got a taste. The chicken was sliced and moist. We got plenty of protein. My husband got the fettuccine Alfredo. He's Italian and loved it. My daughter's boyfriend ordered the salmon. He asked me to taste the concoction underneath because he said it was to die for. I immediately recognized green peas and mint. He was floored BC he hates green peas. He's a new convert! We had no room for dessert after that beautifully prepared meal. Came back to the area recently and had heard good things about this restaurant. Decided to try it last night and it did stand up to the praise it has been receiving. The food was very good. Good quality ingredients and well presented. However I have deducted one star for the end or not the end of meal service and not being informed of the cost of the "specials" which is why we found we had our purchased a $48 steak. The waitress handed us the bill without being requested then proceeded to bring the machine again without being asked. I sarcastically asked "so you want me to pay the bill" thinking she would realise her error only to be be told "yes I would". It was 45 minutes before their posted closing, so that should have been an issue. We paid, stayed and finished our wine and left 15 minutes later. We will return and hopefully we will not encounter this type of behaviour next time read more

Came here after a Yuk Yuks comedy show around 10pm on a Saturday night. Since the comedy show let out, a bunch of people made their way up to Italian by Night for some food and drinks. I was the first one through the door and waited at the host stand, as I assumed they were still serving. Many servers walked by me and the other standing at the host stand and did not say a word to us. They also watched us stand there from across the room and no one bothers to greet us or tell us the dinning room was closed. I finally approached one of the servers and said, "Is there a host? There is a line of us at the door" She got the host who seemed to be annoyed that we were there and not realizing they were closed. I told her, "Well the comedy show just let out and there's a lot of people looking to eat. Are you serving at the bar?" she said yes and a bunch of us (all different parties) ended up at the bar. (This is why they get 4 stars instead of 5). My date and I sat at the bar and were given a limited bar menu. Perfect for us as we were just looking for pizza. We ordered the truffle mushroom white pizza and some waters. The bartender (older female) was super nice and attentive even though we could tell she was very busy. She was very nice and my date's phone was dying and she even plugged it in behind the bar for him. The pizza came quickly and it was AMAZING. Seriously, get the truffle mushroom pizza. It's to die for. Sorry my pics are so bad, but it was very dim in there and I didn't want to set my pizza down to mess around with taking more pics. It was a thin crust pizza with truffle oil and small bits of black truffle, and mixed mushrooms. It came out pipping hot and the crust was not chewy and the pizza was not too oily. It seriously was perfect. The atmosphere was a tad loud (all the drinks from the comedy club were there) and the bar is sat right next to the door which is a weird concept, but in a way I liked it because it made it feel like its own restaurant and gave the dinning area more privacy. The decor is beautiful and they have this impressive family table with a massive metal chain as the feet of the table. My friend regrets that we did not get a pic of it to post here. Oh well, you will have to go check it out for yourself. Price wise, $20 seemed like a lot for that 10 inch pizza but it was so good and truffles are not cheap. I only wish I didn't have to share with my date ;) Overall - I realize they were slammed and not expecting a rush at 10pm, but the bartenders were on point and super amazing and the food was even better. I look forward to going back there and actually testing out some of the entrees and drink menu. read more

Stopped here for dinner earlier this week while on my honeymoon road trip through New England and Eastern Canada. This place was poppin' during mid-week and we failed to make reservations. I think it was extra busy due to the Chop Chop event going on in the city that week for the restaurants. We ate at the bar and were served by the bartender, Perry who was super personable and a fun guy. We got drinks and my husband ordered their Chop Chop menu and I got their dish of the day. I got a steak while he got a pork chop which both were huge and delicious. All the food was delicious. After we commented on the amazing quality of the meat we'd had in Canada that week, Perry informed us their meat was all organic and grass-fed which it basically the standard there. Not like in the US. Plus, they educate the staff of what is in each dish because of how many different dietary restrictions, sensitivities and allergies you have now when it comes to food. Extra props for those points! The bar company was great and they even gave us champagne on the house after they found out why 2 San Franciscans were road tripping in Canada in the fall. It was a great experience and eating at the bar was fun. We got to learn more about Saint John, the people that make up this port city, their traditions, outlook on life and how proud they are of their home. While on vacation from Ontario... We we're staying with friends who have moved to the East Coast and thought an Italian Diner was a great idea from all of the sea food options. Fortunately for Us, we were able to get the last table as we didn't have a reservation. Our party of 4 landed a window seat and our server, he (Perry) was the entertainer making our experience more than Amazing. Decor was classy and not over crowded and not rushed. We started with the Bruschetta appetizer and glass of Red Wine! I had the Parmigiana Di Pollo!!!! BEST Parm I have ever eaten!!!!! Lasagna Grande was to die for as it was very flavourful! The Ravioli Del Giorno special was filling & Delish! The Salmone was not a disappointing dish either... for Dessert we had a dark chocolate cake drizzled with a raspberry sauce & whipped cream... YUM!!! as ALL plates were Almost licked clean...LOL! Definitely a restaurant you don't want to overlook in St. John's... NEVER experienced Perfection like this before at any other restaurant... from walking through the front door while exiting with a much satisfied full bellies and experience!!!! Second time in St John, but first time at IBN. Really nice place. A little upscale with people that are down to earth. I ordered an Osso Boucco which was properly cooked accompanied by potatoes presented in a special way. I recommend. You have a decent selection of wine by the glass. When we arrived, it looked very inviting and lively. Many patrons, so we assumed the food would be great. The food took quite a while to arrive. I had a seafood linguini (without sauce) I expected a creamy linguini sauce ($32). It sea food was ok, a lot of clams, 2 shrimp, a piece of salmon and 1 scallop! My wife ordered the most expensive steak ($48.00) I have ever seen on a menu ( Ive lived and eaten in many expensive restaurants in Montreal Toronto and all over the world.) It was supposed to be 10 onzes but looked like a 6 oz filet mignon. It was not worth the price. I had an Italian beer and my wife a Coors Light, this was a lot less than I expected at only $6.50 ea. Over all the meal was average for the final price of $120 including a 15% tip. Needless to say, I will not be back there again. Britts around the corner and at the golf course is a much better restaurant for food quality and value. They need to get some real Toronto or Montreal Italians to do a proper job of cooking Italian food. read more

We ordered and wait 1 hr for meal.This is the first Italian restaurant I have ever been that did not put bread on the table.portions very small not worth the price we all stopped on way home to eat,food was not great ,water was terrible,they need to filter water,service was slow .Our server appeared to have to many tables to wait on. We came here after receiving many amazing reviews from friends and co workers and we definitely agree with everyone that this place is spectacular! We arrived with no reservations on a busy Sat night and the hostess Elizabeth, pulled some magic and we are so grateful for finding us a spare table! So our first impression is that this restaurant is amazing! Our waitress Lydia was so friendly and helpful, again adding to the experience! The meal itself was delicious! We had the Spiedini sharing platter and my only qualms about this antipasti was that it was a sharing platter and yet all the items came in threes... I think maybe it should be equal amounts of four so the party sharing can eat have two. We also enjoyed the Brushetta Tre Modi and that again was delicious!
