Gord had Coquilles Saint John (Our version of Coquille St. Jacques is a decadent combination of haddock, shrimp & scallops in a white cream sauce surrounded by fries and a veg medley) and enjoyed it. Came in on a Friday at 6:00om. The ambiance is strictly "bar" semi basement. There are also tables outside the entrance. We sat inside and it was dimly lit. Our server was waiting on us as well and some tablet outside and she forgot about us. After we got her attention she came right over and apologized for zoning out : ) Ordered the loaded fries with chicken and the three item snack pack with bacon garlic fingers, maple bacon meatballs and pierogi. Also ordered three of the breweries beers-whistle pig stout, Irish red and strong ale. (6:15pm) The loaded fries was a HUGE serving...crispy fries with plenty of toppings. It was plenty for three to share along with the other appetizers. The pierogis were delicious and cooked great. The bacon garlic fingers were well cooked (least favorite). The meatballs were amazing!! The glaze and bacon made it my favorite of all!! One warning... Came for brunch on a Sunday around 11:30. No wait. Still pretty empty. Blueberry pancakes were big and very yummy. Husband got the burger, and he really liked it. While visiting St. John we found out there were several local breweries so thought we would check out Big Tide. Walking the streets of St. John is relaxing and a little taxing with the hills. Finally found our way to Big Tide. It is across from a popular touristy Irish pub, won't mention the name as this is all about Big Tide. We ducked into the door and found that the brewery had quite a bit of space and offered a good selection of beers although not a huge offering. We bellied up to the bar and decided to order a flight. Our favorites were the Low Big Tide Gose and the Blood Orange White IPA. Many breweries also offer sugar rims when it comes to the pumpkin beers. The ladies at the bar were very nice. I wanted to buy a T-shirt for my brewery T-shirt collection so found a colorful one. read more

I absolutely love Big Tide Brewing! We stumbled upon it and went in to check it out! Their beers were all wonderful! The food was out of this world delicious. They had the best chili I've ever had! Called to get food delivered. Answered in a very rude and blunt manner. Did not speak with welcoming, polite and respectful attitude. Rushed my order as if I knew everything the menu offered. When they did deliver they walked into the room and asked if anyone ordered. My table did not hear them except one person from my table and instead of being courteous and asking around, they just turned around and started to leave. Luckily one on the girls at my table spoke up and said I think that may be our food. Then he rolled his eyes and just didn't have the time of day to be of service for anything. All while staring at my card info as I was working on the debit machine. I have multiple witnesses, I have receipts for everything I'm talking about. After being not polite for the whole experience. The only part to look forward to was the food and everyone that had food did not finish it. Due to just not great tasting food. I have never left a food or service review before and I never expected it to be bad. No part of the experience I had was good. Not sure about the reviews. The beer is flat out awful. Watery and bland. Then again, I'm used to the beer in Portland, Maine which is some of the best in North America. Typical bar food as well. Atmosphere is is ok, almost like a pop up chain. read more

First off, let me say that four stars is not bad! For a bar to impress me, it needs to offer something unique, have a certain vibe, or have incredibly nice staff members. Big Tide really had none of the above. I had a Blond America Lager. Presumably made on premise. I enjoyed it a lot! Unfortunately, I didn't have a warm, "welcome to my tavern" feeling while here. Definitely should be on everyones list to be while in SJ. While visiting Saint John for my SO's work, I stumbled upon Big Tide for it's sign out front that said ' chocolate amaretto porter'. I stopped there on a late night. Beer: this place is first a brewery, and you can tell there is heart and effort in their beers. The bartenders are very knowledgeable on all of them. They have rotating taps so the chocolate amaretto and raspberry ale probably won't be there long, both super delicious. Food: step up from pub food, maybe it's because the cook stepped out to ask how things are and if he could improve on anything, tiny effort but very appreciated. read more

Great microbrewery, a family business, run by an owner who's passionate about what he does. They're conveniently located just a block away from the ship terminal. We walked in during our ship's stop in Saint John and had a great conversation with the owner, while sampling the selection of great craft beers. The hefeweizen was especially memorable, and so was the as-of-yet unfiltered double IPA. Great place to visit if you're in town for the day or even a few hours. Probably worth a drive, as well. We will definitely be back, if we're ever in the area! read more

An enjoyable casual meal, with unique micro brew to drink, in a trendy downtown setting. My meal featured a California sandwich- basically a grilled chicken breast on a bun, with guacamole added. The vegetables that went on the bun were crisp and so were the fries accompanying. Works for me. The wife had the "tipsy onion" soup, which was delicious, and the Reuben, which also was well done. Pity the soup had to be ordered separate and could not be an upgraded side, but that's a minor gripe. The pretzel appetizer was delicious. How can you go wrong with warmed pretzel bread brushed with garlic butter? Yum. The accompany mustard sauce was nothing special, but the pretzel itself whetted my appetite...as it should. The most interesting item was the beer. Since it is a brew pub, they have four home brews on tap. I chose the Gose, a very light sour beer of German origin that went down easily, but has a surprisingly salty aftertaste. Not bad mind you, but certainly different. I did not get to try the others on tap but would expect they would also be of similar quality. Full marks to the brewmaster for putting out a risky beer like this. (It must be risky because the waitress offered to bring me a sampler for tasting even after I'd committed to a pint of it, sight unseen) Decor was split personality: the lower section is ironically the brightest hippest part of the restaurant and the upper is somewhere dark with heavy wood, almost like a brewery basement. Both parts are serviced equally, and you can view the brewing kettles in the latter section. I'd go back, especially if they keep making creative beers like the Gose. read more

Had a quick dinner here while traveling for work on a Sunday. They only had four beers on tap but the two that I tried were good quality. I had the blackened salmon with side salad. Menu looks nice, but food was just mediocre. Not bad, but nothing outstanding. I probably could have cooked it better at home. I had salmon with veggies and potato skins. My friend had a steak sandwich and said it was actually excellent. Service was extremely slow and there were only 3 tables of people, so that was an issue for me. We found ourselves trying to flag down our waitress several times. The man at the bar (bartender or manager?) was very helpful in giving us travel tips and directions, and they let us use their phone to book a hotel when we realized we couldn't really call it using our American phones unless we wanted to pay a dollar/min to our cellphone provider. read more

We stopped here on a Saint John Uncorked tour of several beer & wine & food stops; Big Tide was the best of them. We had 5 healthy samples, 1 at a time, with Tom giving us great stories about each beer, their brewing operations, and the bar's history. We could see 2 of the 5 beers we had brewing, only about 10 feet from our table. Tom also gave us helpful tips about which bars/brewers to hit in Halifax, our next cruise stop. Very glad we stopped here. We didn't order food, although they brought out some tasty nachos. We've found it's a good rule to not set food expectations too high at great beer places, and not set beer expectations too high at great food places. Beers were not my favorite. Have to admit, Canadians have a different take on IPA's than anywhere, I know in the US that IPAs can vary, but I'm yet to have a Canadian IPA that I consider to even be close to what I'm used to and more importantly what I like. Beer is great! Food is bad. That's really the only way to put it, Atmosphere is great for groups the staff are also well trained and knowledgeable and attentive. Sadly the food falls very short. I would recommend this place for a good fun drink but not a meal. read more

Food was fine..our waitress was awesome. However, one of the other employees working there came completely unhinged when I was unable to pay with the debit machine. I asked what happened (card was declined but the waitress told me the machines have been finicky) to which the other employee behind the bar told me that "You don't have the money to pay for it" which is a completely insane thing to say to a paying customer, my bill was nearly 100$. At this point this employee/bartender/co-owner I dunno what he is but he continued to argue with myself telling me that this situation was my fault. I even told him that I would go to the bank to get the money to which he responded with only more arguing. I told him multiple times that what he was doing was a very poor way to treat his customer and was very rude. He replied back with "sorry you feel that way" with a smirk on his face. It sucks that he had to go and ruin a completely fine night out with his poor behavior. Let me say this again the food and waitress were great. However , this man completely destroyed any of those good feelings. Anyways, I wouldn't go back there ever again and I've been going there since it opened. I'm a local here and I'll 100% be telling everyone that will listen to me about this awful experience. read more

They have a good beer but after the third time of going to a local place that's out of what I want I'm over it. If you are going to have a feature don't run out and offer to substitute chicken for shrimp. They finally agreed to do scallops in lieu of shrimp but they should have in the first place. We were in St John only one day and wanted to sit down somewhere and relax. Our first choice was another place, but it was a Sunday and that one was closed. Thank God! We are so happy to discover this gem! This is a nice microbrewery and the selection of beers was just to our liking! They serve good food too, so you can enjoy great beer and some good snacks. I'm in Canada for a swim meet and we stopped in to eat a quick meal before heading to the hotel. The mozzarella sticks were pretty good, and the sweet potato poutine was very good! The service was not the fastest, and it took a while to get our check. The grilled salmon was good. Over all, it was a fine place to eat for a night out. read more
