In fact, despite facing the water on a main street outside of the cruise port, you wouldn't really know this place was here without the internet. Thanks Google Maps for pointing us to Loyalist City Brewing, which ended up being our favorite place in St. John! Up some stairs, you'll find a classy, cozy bar with amazing beer on draft. You overlook beautiful view of the water, and it's the perfect location for people watching the cruise tourists strolling by below. The beer is great! I had a very smooth stout - one of the better beers I've had in some time.

We completely walked by this place ... as it's only a garage door on Water Street (which was closed…read moreon our first pass). However, after coming back some time later ... we found it with their garage door open. Unfortunately, it's only a brewery with no taproom and could only do growler fills from their taps ... so we weren't able to try anything. However, the brewer(?) was there and she was super friendly in directing us to their large refrigerated case of canned beers for sale. We weren't quite sure about their local open container laws and we couldn't bring the beer back onto the cruise ship we arrived on. So, we opted to just buy some glassware to take home with us. But don't despair ... we ended going to Woodchucks Axe Throwing (directly out back on Prince William St. behind/above them) to find a large selection of their beers on tap. That's where I found their Lupulus Interruptus DIPA (8.2%) and it was absolutely fantastic! So good in fact ... that I missed trying some of their others including Pink Dwarf Sour (5.5%), Parrtown ESB Bitter (5.5%), and Black 47 Nitro Stout (4.7%). Whether it's a can or growler from the brewery ... or at one of the many other bars in Saint John, it's definitely worth giving their beers a try.

We chose the chicken, the brisket and the sausage, and broccoli salad and potato salad for the sides. Everything was incredible. My favorite was for sure the brisket with the crispy onions on top. My second favorite was the chicken, deliciously fall off the bone. My third favorite was the sausage. I'm not a huge smoked sausage fan but as far as smoked sausages go these were great. I think next time I would go with the pulled pork. The barbecue sauces were delicious. The meats were cooked perfectly. I really liked the salads as well (especially the broccoli salad, but the potato salad was also awesome). The Diavola pizza was incredible, I love spicy authentic Italian pizza, this was up there with the best I've ever had. You have to try the chocolate chip skillet cookie. I mean if you're a chocolate cookie lover like I am. The beer was great, love the IPA and the radler, and the Italian plum sour which was something different. For lunch I had the brisket sandwich... OMG with the crispy onions and bacon and cheese... TOO good. Also started with the smoked mushroom bacon dip, and had some amazing fries in the side with Chipotle dip. Everything was incredible! I can attest that the quality is quite good. There is also an array of beers, including craft beers, available in the back. The staff is very helpful and always ready to answer any question you might have. Be aware of the store hours. If you aren't sure, then call ahead to allow yourself plenty of time to get there before it closes. There is a well stocked store and restaurant in the same shopping area.

Once I tried a Beaver Tail it became like a cult to try to find the stands while traveling around Canada. Two years later I was once again in Canada traveling around and looking for Beaver Tails! Sometimes there can be a line at the food cart but I've been pretty lucky that if a line was started I was usually at the front. All the different stands I've been to have had friendly and fast service: sometimes you can strike up interesting conversations while waiting for your food. Since Beaver Tails Is sold at food stands there is usually seating areas close by to enjoy your delicacy.
