    Paulas Traditional Fish And Chips

I'd read some glowing reviews of this fish & chip shop so I kept it in mind. I don't eat this food…read morevery often now but I did eat a lot of it in my early teens, but that's a whole other story. So pulled up into the car park, two degrees outside and 'are we human or are we dancer' coming out of the radio as I turned off the engine. First duty was into a nearby supermarket for a soft white bread pan. When it's fish n chips it has to be tea, bread and lots of butter. A good sprinkling of salt on the fish n chips too. Carbs, animal fats and hardly a healthy calorie in sight. So into the chip shop to a friendly welcome from a man, certainly didn't look like Paula but it's a funny old world so I thought better than to ask. Two fish and chips please (or as we used to say: two fish suppers) £11.60 was required. I checked it was cod and he almost seemed taken aback at my question - he said, 'of course'. I waited a bit pleased that the food was being cooked to order. The portions of cod were huge, with fresh, white chunky and skinless meat. If you aren't sure how fresh cod tastes try it here as it's very fresh. I thought each chip portion was a tad mean but once home and in the plate it was generous enough. The food is cooked in beef dripping. There is no substitute good enough, groundnut, peanut, rapeseed, olive, corn oils none come close. The batter was towards thin and I like that, and to be fair the food sat in a take out bag until I got home and put out the plates and do on. Despite this the food was excellent, perfectly good food and still quite warm. A chip buttie was a must. Now I've eaten some of the finest foods on earth but I gotta tell ya the taste of a white soft pan bread chip buttie with a bit of salt and a generous slap of butter is wonderful made all the better with hot tea. The glowing reviews are right, it's a great place. The next time I want very good fish & chips I know where to go. Maybe next time I'll sit in and have it at its very best. Who knows now that oil prices have fallen the prices here should drop too.

I have never been so shocked at the lack of common sense in all my life. I ordered a double burger…read morewith red sauce but ultimately wouldve been better off ordering red sauce full stop. This burger was so drenched the pattys were slipping out of the bun and there was actually a pool of sauce which had accumulated in the corner of the box which housed this monstrosity. Honestly what possessed these individuals to do this? It is baffling. Seek therapy immediately. Ge-no-wha? You're s**t.

A first visit. This place boasts to be over 100 years in business. A take away codfish & chip is…read more£6.40 so it's overpriced by about £1. The chip portion is generous. The double cooked chips are just about alright, but not very good, as they weren't crispy, as if they are not cooked at the proper temperature. Too expensive not to be just perfect. You'd imagine with over 100 years in business they could serve up perfect fish and chips every time. The cod was cooked to order, which is a plus, but the cod is disappointingly quite thin. The batter is delicious and light though. The fish was good but again should be more chunky at this price. I had a look at the sit in menu as I waited for my order. I saw that a fish and chip for one person with tea, bread and butter is about £10. Again overpriced by £1.50 and no-one was sitting - in so join the dots. Why is it in this mentality that prompts a rip - off action rather than a fair price? The staff certainly are a friendly bunch. Parking on the plaza is a real challenge driver courtesy is hard to find. I won't rush back.

We just happened to be passing by too about a week later and also decided to give it a go. So we got a fish & chips - cod of course - and the food was top notch. The batter was light and crisp and not greasy. The cod was Persil white, moist and chunky. It was a good portion too. The chips were perfectly cooked too exactly as they should be. The meal was £5. Now there was a downside as I was not offered salt or vinegar. Imagine fish & chips without salt and vinegar. I didn't see either about so while I would ordinarily knock a star off for such howlers I'm not going to because the quality of food and portion size for a fiver is a fair deal and it's only right to be fair right back but I would recommend they invest in salt and vinegar. Finally, as I waited for my meal the guy behind the counter was making what looked like pizza bases and firing them into an oven. They came out like a dinner plate sized cross between a nan bread and a pitta bread and more toward pitta. These were the base for chicken and lamb kebabs and this type of food is just so appealing when it's fresh and good.

Firstly this take away only place appears to be open for years now but I only spotted it a few…read moreweeks ago. I decided that I'd try it out but the first time after deciding to try it there was a queue extending out the door; but I think it might have been one of those religious - only eat fish - days. As it happened my first visit was accidental as I just happened to be quarter of a mile from it at dinner time and passing by it for home. There is some parking outside it but the road is heavily trafficked and you need to be careful as you reverse out. The queue was small in number, about four in front of me, as I placed my cod n chips order at a whopping £7.50. These are London prices. In fact at this price I cold enjoy (and very recently did enjoy) a sit in Harry Ramsden's cod, chips and mushy peas in the Lowry centre, Manchester. I noticed the lack of interaction between staff and customers. Once an order was placed with payment and salt and vinegar confirmed we stand back in silence waiting for our food. No craic, no real engagement between customers and staff. The cod I got was ok but thinner than I'd like. The good thing was that the fish batter which wasn't too greasy survived until I got home, without becoming soggy. The chips were good too but as I said the Harry's meal was streets ahead, particularly in quality and the size of good cod. Would I return here. No. I'd rather drive to the Pit Stop, Kilkeel for a superb sit in cod & chips that puts this food well in the shade and for less money as their sit-in provides a soft drink.
