I'm an old fashioned bloke who has never ever and will never ever go into a takeaway and order burger & chips, sausage & chips nor chicken & chips: fish & chips only and cod or haddock in that order. Salt but no vinegar. And I'm fussy.
Yes it's unhealthy food - no doubt about that - but I'd eat fish & chips before anything from the burger and chicken chain purveyors.
This relatively new place was recommended by a friend who alas died recently. He thought it ace.
It's take away only and the staff friendly were cheery and I commend the bravery of the new owners opening a business post covid in the teeth of crazy energy price hikes.
So £9.20 for a huge portion of cod goujons and chips. The cod was fresh and tasty and the chips top notch but the fish batter has no bubbly lightness. It's great value for money as the portion is generous enough for two.
I'm glad I tried it and understand why my mate thought it ace but while I'm giving it 5 star I am not likely to hurry back.
The only reason is the fish batter as I much prefer the light, crisp batter in John Dory (Lisburn) Pit Stop (Kilkeel) and best of all the bubbly light batter from the mobile chip van down at Kilkeel harbour - so it's personal taste.
The batter at the harbour gives the most delicious onion rings but the crispy cod batter mix isn't a good batter for them. read more
