We've had three cooked - to - order takeaway codfish & chips from this daftly named place in the last few weeks, so as we got our third takeaway Friday past I thought it time to write a first review.
Each time we go, we get cod goujons and chips, at times two and three we added onion rings, and for the first time in my life, last Friday night, I made my order on an app on my phone. So cod goujons, chips and French fried onions is £9.7.
Our first two takeaways were ace; the cod was wonderful each time, as were the chips, with the fish batter really light, crisp and tasty, which is an absolute essential. It's a pity those Newry chip shops still haven't grasped this essential requirement - featherlight crispy batter that stays crisp for at least 15 minutes.
Each of our first two orders had very long wait times, with Good Friday evening stretching to an extraordinary 45 minute wait. Folks sat out in the car park with electronic buzzers, and occasionally bewildered staff delivered food orders to those sitting in the vehicles - they seemed to get it right first time most of the time but occasionally no. So between apps and waiting in the car (and masks on if you go inside) there's little interaction with the staff.
This place is impressively staffed with at least 10 staff behind the counter, so it's quite an operation. They prove what I've said before - if someone offers top notch fish and chips with light crisp batter, thick fish fillet and crisp chips they'll be onto a real winner. This is still not happening around Newry centre.
Friday night's food here though was sadly poor when compared to the previous two nights, but on balance I'll keep it at five stars for now, but at £7.5 for fish & chips it's high end London prices so it shouldn't really ever go sub-par on the food.
So what do I mean when I say this: I have a friend (yes, I know, that's surprising) who lives in the centre of London; within zone 2 of their wonderful tube system who is partial to darn good cod & chips and is asked to pay £7.50 for his cooked to order and generously portioned thick cod fish supper in central London where rents are suffocating and car parking nigh on impossible. I can't figure how we can get away with charging London prices here, but that's the way it is.
I suspect the price is pitched at the cost of a takeaway main Chinese. If so this is a rip off as most Chinese takeaways around Newry are still lousy quality.
The funny thing is that our first two carry outs were so damn good when they were going at full tilt and had very long wait times, but last Friday, which was marked by the death of Prince Philip, formerly a prince of Greece & Denmark and born into the erstwhile House of Glücksburg, they appeared much more calm and were certainly much quicker.
I got there before the time I'd selected on the app to ensure I got fresh, hot food. I was delighted to hear that my order hadn't yet been cooked but as I said the food wasn't as good - with the fish in particular far too bloody thin and poorly cooked for the £7.5 price and the chips too weren't crispy.
Bottom line - we will return but expect high standards, we'll even be patient but it needs to stay top notch. If it was a straight choice between here and John Dory Lisburn the latter would still win hands down.
Bit of an update. Went back today and it was top notch. read more
