We recently stayed in Beadnell for a few days and ended up eating at the Craster Arms two nights out of three. It's a charming pub/restaurant with great outdoor space and some reasonable beers on tap.
On the food side the dishes ranged from eh to fabulous - with little rhyme or reason. The fish and chips were huge but greasy and more or less tasteless. The steak and ale pie was very good. The Veggie Wellington - a pastried concoction of nuts, cheese, and mushrooms - was one of the best vegetarian dishes I've ever tasted. The burgers were cooked to death but saved by tasty cheese and jalapeno. But best of all was the sticky toffee pudding which was staggeringly delicious - we had it with cream the first night and custard the second. We almost came back to the Arms for dinner on our third night...just so we could try it with ice cream.
On the service side the Craster Arms tries to be both a pub and a restaurant so things get wacky. It's a restaurant so there is a hostess who expects to seat you rather than allowing you to grab a table. It's a pub so you are expected to get your own drinks at the bar. It's a restaurant so you have a waitress who wants to take your food order at your table. But then food and drink start to arrive and everything falls apart as you need silverware, water, condiments, another round, dessert, and the check. The second night a kindly barman took pity on us and shepherded the delivery of everything we needed. read more
