There's a large outdoor area at the back that was being refurbished for our visit, but it looks pretty smart and will no doubt make an excellent area to enjoy a pint in the sun in Melrose.

The chips were good, and the vegetables were cooked well, making for a solid, comforting meal. The atmosphere of the hotel was pleasant and provided a nice place to relax after exploring the castle. While the food wasn't bad by any means, it didn't quite stand out among some of the other meals we had during our trip.

Well suited to large and family parties. For many years the place was owned by a family, but a recent change of ownership may have contributed to a slight drop in standards. Food portions are not always generous and meals are not always as hot as one might wish for.

Prices for booze are reasonable too and it's open late on Fridays and Saturdays, something we made the most of! Dogs are welcome too. Food is also served but had finished when we arrived. Rooms are £65 for two including a hearty Scottish Breakfast. They are really spacious rooms and have excellent soundproofing which is important when the A1 is less than ten metres away. They're modern and clean inside and there's no additional charge for your four-legged friend to stay too, which is welcome. If I'm in the area again I'm sure to pop back round for the friendly welcome.

Not updated, but well maintained and great views and location. Staff was relatively helpful. We had breakfast one morning (included with the room) and it was not good. We ate at a different hotel the next day and enjoyed it more. This is where I disclaim that Im American, so maybe my food preferences were just different. Theres nothing overtly wrong with it. We just didn't like it. We had made dinner reservations but ended up canceling them and exploring nearby towns and islands. All in all, it was fine. Id probably try a different hotel next time, but i dont have any complaints.

The room was clean and comfortable; obviously it's not the most modern place, but the bed was comfy and it had a good shower. No lift, sadly. The real star of the show was the food - we'd booked in the restaurant for the evening meal, which was just as well as it was pretty full, given the reduced seating available due do COVID. The menu has a great selection of seafood, and I have to recommend the seafood sharing platter, which was the perfect size for two as a main course. For starters, I had the beetroot cured salmon, and Herself had fishcakes; we were both too full to manage a dessert after that! We also splashed out and had an extremely nice bottle of wine from Marlborough, NZ to remind us of our trip there last year (we've become huge fans of NZ wines now). For breakfast the next morning, I resorted to form and had the full veggie option, while Herself chose the Craster kipper, which I am assured was probably the best kipper she's ever had. I'm not a huge fan of kippers, so will take her word on that. All in all, it was a lovely break and we really liked this hotel. It was only slightly marred by discovering on leaving that the car next to us in the car park (which is about 100m away round the corner) had dinged our wing slightly with their door and left without a note. But that's not the hotel's fault.

Everything in my room was so crisp, clean, and perfect, I could easily believe I was the first person to stay there. Excellent shower, large and very comfortable bed with high-quality linens. Two doors and a hallway separate the hotel from the pub, ensuring that none of the restaurant noise reaches the rooms. There is a post office right across the street and a news shop just down the block, and Thirlestane Castle is a short walk. We had dinner (haggis bon bons and steak pie) and breakfast (full Scottish) at the restaurant and everything was perfect. Highly, highly recommended.

The food in the Bistro and at breakfast is fantastic, it's a shame I didn't manage to try the tweed restaurant as the bar was set very high. The room was very large, as was the bed with very good furnishings and large bathroom. It fell down on the extremely weak shower performance and an old, low down TV. The location by old Abbey and the grounds of the hotel are simply spectacular. With views and grounds like these why would anyone need a TV? The hotel will loan cycles and rods for those who want to fish or explore the area. Although don't forget that fishing for Salmon or Sea Trout on a Sunday is still illegal in scotland. The hotel room guide also quaintly reminds you that although they allow legal fishing, it is 'unethical to fish for trout on a Sunday' I'd love to give this hotel 5 stars but cannot bring myself to do so as the shower was just too poor. However, would I go back? Hell yes, this is the best hotel experience I've had in a long time and will seek it out if I'm ever in the Borders again.

Our room was a standard room I think, on the ground floor. It was very spacious with a bed roughly the same size as China, 2 armchairs and a dressing table. The bed and pillows were so comfortable I could happily have taken them home! The bathroom was also spacious and well-equipped, my one complaint would be the water pressure of the shower (slightly like a kitten licking you clean!). We did not dine in the restaurant but attended a Christmas party night in the hotel - the food was fantastic, surprisingly so, as these buffet style things are usually not up to much. The main course of buffet carvery beef and turkey was fantastic - the beef melted in the mouth! Breakfast was a little disappointing (who on earth toasts potato scones!?) but plentiful. The grounds are beautiful, have a stroll around. The staff were very helpful and friendly especially the front desk staff. All in all I would recommend it, and would return here for a romantic weekend or to relax.
