This was one of my favorite spots during my month in Scotland/United Kingdom. On our way home from Edinburgh via the train, we passed by the cutest little bar just outside the train station. In much need of a refreshing beer, the Station Yard was a welcome sight! The bartender told us all about the beers offered and let us know they brew their own! The owner was seated nearby and shared some stories with us. We took our beers to the nicely appointed outdoor patio and enjoyed the early evening weather. Did you know it stays light until 10pm during the summer? It's easy to lose track of time while the sun is still out! There was an old piano on the patio and I played a few tunes. I even got rounds of applause from some of the guests. Not sure if it was for my basic piano skills or they were just happy I stopped playing. LOL The interior had a couple of sitting rooms with comfy sofas and chairs, plus the bar and a nice clean restroom. We really enjoyed this little spot and the warm welcome from the bartender and owner. This would be my frequent spot if I lived in Dunbar!

July 7, 2024 - party of 2…read more This was the first pub during my month-long trip in England & Scotland. I'm glad I got the mediocre one out of the way first. Volunteer Arms is located in tiny Dunbar, very close to the sea. It had a nice outdoor patio but no table service. I went inside to order a couple pints at the bar. I stood there for a long time, totally ignored by the two female bartenders. A man standing next to me asked what I wanted and I said a couple of beers. He called out to one of the bartenders who said "I see her standing there." Still ignored me for a bit more but she did see me. Finally got those pints. For the next round, I sent my partner inside who was waited on very quickly. She even gave him a bag of crisps (potato chips). The top 2 floors are their restaurant. Very dimly lit with chunky furniture. The restrooms are upstairs which was really different to me. Why does the UK put the bathrooms upstairs? Only a few choices of place to go in Dunbar. This isn't one I would return to.

Where the chicken that this chicken breast came from I don't know but it was definitely doing some serious weightlifting and bulking up. It was MASSIVE, in all it's chickeny beauty I found it hard to resist taking a huge bite out of the burger. Long stoy short, I ended up taking a huge bite out of the burger. The chicken was beautifully juicy for general pub grub and the bacon was lovely, sweet but slightly salted which gelled all the flavours of the breaded chicken and the toasted roll together. Thinking about it now, I'm getting hungry again. Every time I have a pub burger, the side salad always lets it down, every time, it's like the bars expect people not to eat it, but not this bar. The salad was crisp and fresh, served up with a deliciously sweet vinaigrette that was perfect for dipping a wee bit of the roll in. The spirit measures were 35ml and the guest ales on offer covered breweries such as Innis & Gunn and The Inveralmond Brewery (who do beers such as Lia Fail and Ossian) which justified the bar being about 60-70p more expensive than the others we visited.

There is nothing about the decor here that suggests they have tried to make it a little more modern since 1980 but if I'm totally honest that's the way l 'd like to see it kept as it adds a little character. For a pint of McEwans 70 shilling & a JD and diet coke it was £6 which is about the price of tap water in some Edinburgh bars and clubs. At first the girl behind the bar didn't seem too keen on as "tourists" but that soon changed and what got off to a bit of a shaky start ended up being quite a wee visit.
