I have not tried a Sunday lunch yet but have been midweek when the food was lovely, generous portions! I thought the cost of the main meals were very good and were what I expect from a local pub. Talking to the lady behind the bar she informed us that they have just added some B&B accommodation, this will come in handy for relatives visiting us from Yorkshire, a bit different from the usual premier inn. The pub itself has a very nice lounge, very relaxing with fireplace. There is plenty of seating in the restaurant and this has a warm atmosphere. There is a separate bar area which also has a nice feel to it. I will come back here again, and although I do not live in Ellington, i wish this was my local! Plenty of parking outside the pub. It is so pretty in the summer when it is adorned with flowers that you just can't help but want to stop off there as you're passing through :-) Inside it is rather more modern than you might expect and quite smart for a pub. There is a bar area, and a room off to the side with leather chairs and sofas and a TV. At the other end of the pub there is an extensive dining area and the pub does seem heavily geared towards dining. We had just popped in for a beer and there was Black Sheep and Old Speckled Hen on both of which were very pleasant. The staff were welcoming and friendly and we spent a relaxing and very enjoyable hour there.

Okay, let's face it: The *only* tourist attraction. The decor is clean, bright and stylish, the menu not excessively long (just five or so starters & mains each - always a good sign), and all the "specials" (mains) cost UKP 10. I had the beef burger with chips and salad garnish, and it was one of the best burgers I've had in my life (and I've had quite a few). Instead of the standard sesame bun, here they use a breakfast brioche, which is much more tasty (and slightly sweet). And instead of the often flabby American-style chips that you get at so many pubs, they serve crisp French fries here. The patty itself is juicy and of good quality. It's also enough to feed a grown man. The beer selection is not vast, but includes 2-3 handpumped ales, plus the usual roster of fizzy lagers. There's a nice wine selection as well. Of course, the place offers the "full bar" range. Staff is friendly, if not especially committed. Don't expect anyone asking you whether you're enjoying the food. Perhaps you have to be a local to get that kind of attention.

The Jolly Fisherman has some outdoor seating above the water, and on a cold day you can just admire the coastline out the big windows. In terms of scenery, it can't be beat! You order at the front and then they bring you your food. I hope they have a fire going in winter, because this pub was absolutely freezing on a mild day in September, colder inside than out. My fiancé and I split the Jolly Fish Board: crab Pot, fillet of fresh salmon, kipper pate, smoked salmon, prawns and herring rollmop, side salad and sour dough bread. We also had a crab sandwich to share as well. Everything was fresh as advertised, and though it was my first time trying some of these foods, I was really impressed. The kipper pate especially was so wonderful, and the crab pot too! Wonderful smoky salmon. The only thing I couldn't bring myself to try was the rollmop. All that skin! While the prices seemed quite fair, £8 for the sandwich and £10 for the fish board, the meals aren't filling and we did get hungry again a few hours later. It appears that its popularity centres around the food as almost everyone was dining. Craster is famous for its kippers and the Jolly Fisherman continues that theme with the emphasis firmly on seafood. Crab sandwiches, North Sea prawns, mussels, kipper pate and salmon all starred on the lunchtime menu together with the option of a portion of beef dripping chips. I didn't notice any local beers at the bar but maybe I missed them as I fancied a lager when we visited. I can imagine how busy this place must get on a sunny Sunday in the summertime but I'd still have to pop in anyway if I was in the area. One downside is that it has a very small car park and parking is severely limited in Craster, there is a pay and display car park just outside Craster though or maybe at a push you could park on the small housing estate nearby although I'm not sure whether there are restrictions there. Fortunately we landed lucky on our visit and there was a free space in the pub car park which was a bit of a miracle really. I'll be back! :-)

It is a hotel and the reception is inside the pub so it is open all day which is unusual for many of the village pubs in this area. They serve food from noon till 3pm and 6pm till 9pm but we didn't dine so I can't comment on the quality of the food. There were three or four local beers on including Secret Kingdom and Coast to Coast from Hadrian's Border Brewery as well as the usual lagers etc. There is a pool table, and we enjoy a game, but on each occasion that we were in it was totally monopolised by the landlord and staff. I'm sure we could have put our 50p on the table but I don't think we'd have been too popular! :-) The pub is dog friendly and has a beer garden to the rear which would be a nice place to while away an hour on a sunny day. Reasonable little pub really, I'd have given it four stars if we'd been able to play pool! :-)

All of the staff were friendly and extremely welcoming. Overall, it was excellent value. It was one of the most pleasant stays I've had in a pub and I will definitely be back. Well suited to large and family parties. For many years the place was owned by a family, but a recent change of ownership may have contributed to a slight drop in standards. Food portions are not always generous and meals are not always as hot as one might wish for.
