Been twice. NEVER GOING BACK! Worst waitress ever. Decided to give it another try since Elgin has no other breakfast/brunch dining choices. First time NO COFFEE....waitress laughed and said coffee machine broke. The food was served cold and bland; nothing special. Waitress never came around to see if we needed anything. Finally had to get up and go to counter to ask for assistance. Twice now the waitress either ignored us or was blind to us being there. Second time our food must have sat out waiting to be served and was cold and obviously dried out. Waitress was too busy chatting it up with another table, served three other tables that came in after us, talking on phone all whilst we sat ignored and waited ...watched ....waited ....waited and waited while our food sat waiting to be picked up and brought to our table. Absolutely unacceptable. Waitress needs training. read more

This is a delightful little restaurant tucked away in Elgin. My husband and I decided to try it after seeing it on Yelp. It's a cozy little restaurant with lovely country antique decor. The staff was friendly and talked us through the menu options when we told them it was our first time. But the star of the show was the food! It seems to be a family owned restaurant and you could tell there is love in that kitchen. The fried chicken was amazing. We enjoyed size including lima beans macaroni and cheese. The House chips are certainly worth a special mention. We even got a piece of delicious cake to go because we were stuffed so full we couldn't eat it there. We were really looking forward to trying Cornbread Cafe--new place, new experience, and all the expectations that come with wanting to support a local spot. Unfortunately, this visit just wasn't it. We were greeted and told to sit anywhere, which was fine. A server came by to take our drink order, only to let us know they were out of both drinks we originally wanted. No big deal--we pivoted. But then my sweet tea came with Splenda and no spoon to stir it, and silverware never made an appearance at all. What really sealed it, though, was the service--or lack of it. Another server spent close to 20 minutes chatting with a table about something completely unrelated to the restaurant while we sat there unnoticed. During that time, three separate parties were seated after us and were promptly given menus, silverware, and attentive service. We were never checked on again. After sitting there watching everyone else be taken care of, it became pretty clear we weren't going to be served that day. So we got up and left. I always hate sharing experiences like this because I truly want local businesses to succeed. But service matters just as much as the food, and sadly, this visit missed the mark entirely. read more

Stopped in for the first time today for lunch. I've been looking forward to trying this place since they opened. It was Valentine's Day and my wife and I were heading to another restaurant but the traffic was so crazy at lunchtime we decided to hit Elgin. It's a small restaurant with some small tables seating 2 and 4 people and they've got two larger tables if you have a larger group of 6 or possibly 8. It wasn't very crowded today with only about 5 tables working. We walked in and saw the daily special was chicken and dumplings with black eyed peas. My wife and I both decided that is what we would order. She isn't a huge fan of southern cooking and didn't see much anything else on the lunch menu except the Chicken and Dumplings or the Cobb Salad. The waitress came to take our order and we said we'd like the Chicken and Dumplings. She said we're out of that. Now it was 11:58 at the time...they opened at 11AM....and in 58 minutes they were out of the daily special. We were not impressed. So my wife ordered the Cobb salad. The waitress said we don't have any salads because the salad truck hadn't delivered them. Ok..now they're 0-2! She settled for the pimento burger without pimento cheese with a side of sweet potato fries. I opted for the Bourbon bacon burger with a side of Cowboy beans. She brought us each out a complimentary hoe cake which was good. The burgers were huge...and they were cooked well done as we liked them. It seemed like they were almost a 1/2 pound. Mine had two tomatoes, lettuce, bacon and I could hardly get it into my mouth it was so big. My wife said her burger was good and finished about half of it. The Cowboy beans were very good and also her fries. Waitress was ok but really never came by just to check on our food..but she did ask me if I wanted a refill on my tea when we were almost finished eating. They have a decent looking night menu. I would've liked to have tried their pork chop sandwich instead of the burger. My biggest complaint though is being out of your daily special after only being open for 58 minutes. We ate here last year and it was great. We decided to take a little detour on our way to Charleston to eat here again and it was just okay. We ordered house chips and they came out greasy and soggy. We politely asked for them to be cooked more or removed from our bill because we were not going to eat them half cooked. The owner did remove them from the bill but she carried on forever about it in front of all the other patrons and told us to remember to "order them well done next time". It was a disappointing lunch after our first experience there was so good. read more

Food was great. I had the pork chops, potato salad and green beans. Green beans tasted like they'd been picked that morning. Pork chops actually had some fat on them, haven't found that for some time. Husband had the chicken sausage pasta dish which was excellent. Service was a little slow regarding menus and the check but food came out fast. However... I got tired of waiting for the check and went outside. When it came it was not itemized and husband just paid it. It wasn't until we were on the way home that we realized we'd been overcharged by @$3.00. Very quaint restaurant with cozy decor and friendly employees. The food was great! Cornbread is sweet. The edges almost tasted like cookies. We went for dinner and tried the fried chicken and étouffée. The fried chicken was crispy and cooked perfectly. Their coleslaw was crunchy, creamy, and had a zip of vinegar. Their Mac and cheese is very yummy! The étouffée had a southern twist, served over grits. Very warming and comforting meal. Also it was a big portion and filling. We had a piece of berry pie for dessert which had a delicious crumble crust/topping that resembled a berry crisp. Definitely recommend this restaurant. It's tucked away slightly off the main road, but what a gem for Elgin. We are looking forward to visiting again to try their lunch menu. read more

A cute café in Camden South Carolina. We went for dinner with another couple and we were the only ones there at least for the first 45 minutes. The two ladies that were serving I believe we're also the owners. They were so sweet and full of conversation. I had the pimento cheese hamburger With waffle fries, and fried okra. It was very good and filling. I had hoped that the fried okra was hand breaded but pretty sure that it was from frozen. It was OK but probably could have been cooked a little bit more. The cornbread was delicious. Definitely worth a stop in if you're in the area. read more

I really wanted to like this cute, cozy little place and support a small local business. Let's start with the positives. The cafe is cozy and the people are friendly. Th macaroni and cheese is legit! The southern succotash was very good. The menu is very promising but can't quite fulfill those promises. The cornbread was decent but some butter would have elevated it. When you start out by being told what you could not order because they are out of white rice, coleslaw and country fried steak, choices narrow down. Those beautiful salad descriptions on the menu? Forget it. The salad truck still hasn't found a way to deliver produce. (See review from 5 months ago.) The hamburger steak looked like a hamburger patty with some gravy and peppers and onions. It appeared to be very well done. The southern ettouffee was a very large bowl of grits with a few pieces of very overcooked chewy beef with some gravy. I never found the pepper and onions that were promised in the menu description. I can't believe I paid $20 for essentially a bowl of grits. Hopefully, brunch and lunch are much better. The menu does look promising. Bring cash if you don't want to pay a card surcharge. read more

Had wanted to try this place since it opened but kept having conflicts with schedules. Finally made it tonight with my daughter and loved it!!! Will be back. The restaurant is a small, cute little cafe. I'm guessing 30 ppl would be a packed house so it's small enough to enjoy talking during dinner at a normal conversation level. Our server was fantastic - she was friendly, attentive and prompt. I knew we were in for a treat when our server brought the cornbread along with our drinks. Just like mom used to make!!! The entrees were very good and the vegetables were even better. Neither of us really had room for dessert but they sounded so good, we had to try a couple. Both were fantastic!
