SALADS SO FRESH THEY COME WITH LITTLE CRITTERS
While in town visiting my mom, I decided to take her out to a nice dinner somewhere near her office in Concord. We ended up agreeing on The Common Man since she hasn't been there in awhile and this was a new place for me to try out. It's a quaint little restaurant.
Since they weren't ready to seat us for dinner at 4:50, we went upstairs and grabbed a few drinks. It was a nice open-seating bar where we could just relax and chat. This was the better part of the evening.
We got called down for dinner where we were sat in a nice quiet spot. So far, so good. Our waiter came by to greet us and read the specials for the evening. One that caught both of our attentions was the fresh strawberry salad. I'm a fan of locally grown ingredients, so naturally we had to try it. Here's where it went downhill.
The salad came and we both dived right in. It looked real fresh. So fresh in fact, that we had a few critters hanging out in our greens. Now, I want to make one thing clear, this 2-star review IS NOT reflecting just the bug/critter issue -- it's how the rest of the evening played out.
My mom was the one who found it in her salad and handled it like a champ. To not startle the patrons around us, she delicately pointed out the big guy on her plate to me, and then waved over the nearest server. They promptly took it away and expressed their deepest apologies. However, the response we got from both our server and manager, not so apologetic. In fact, they were brushing it off like it wasn't a big deal, all nonchalant like. First our waiter comes by after hearing what happened and just brushed it off saying, "Well, it is fresh greens from a local source. They go through the greens, and so do we. Sometimes we miss it." SAY WHAT? Without going into too much detail and dragging on the bug issue, the manager did the same exact thing just with a few different words.
FAST FORWARD TO THE NEXT ISSUE
I ordered surf and turf, which consisted of steak and one crab cake. My mom raved about their crab cakes, so I was excited to give it a try. When my dish arrived I jumped right in and cut my steak. I ordered it medium-rare, which I think most would agree is the only way to have steak. After giving it two cuts I noticed it was quite grey, as in, OVER COOKED. The Common Man manager, who was the one checking in about the bug before, happened to come over to check on how we liked our food. Originally I was going to just deal with the steak and call it a night, but he could tell I wasn't 100% satisfied. The wait would have been far too long and at this point my mom was already eating, so I would have hated to make her wait for my new steak to come out.
CONCLUSION
Meh, I was under impressed by their food and most importantly their way of dealing with issues. Everything was sort-of brushed off. I don't ever expect comps, but it would have been nice if they took care of more than just the salad that had bugs in it. They could have taken care of a glass of wine or SOMETHING. read more
