One ordered the Garden of Eden flatbread; and its immense size, texture, and taste resonated with mozzarella cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms, and spinach. Two others ordered monstrously-sized salads, with one choosing chicken and the other tofu as their for-an-additional-cost sources of protein. I set my sights on the Grilled, Jerk-Rubbed, Pineapple Chicken, which sat on top a small bed of brown rice, accompanied by pineapple salsa. Each of us enjoyed our meals; although, if I were to be honest, it seemed the Garden of Eden Flatbread was the only one all of us left coveting. The Common is the hotel restaurant located at the College Park Marriott on the University of Maryland campus. I stayed at the hotel for a couple of nights and ordered from the restaurant several times. The restaurant serves American food in a casual, but modern setting. I really like the burger and Smith Island cake here that I got for takeout. However, I found my dine-in experience to be lackluster with slow service. Pricing is on the high side for what you get, which is to be expected for a hotel restaurant. As I was short on time, I think this restaurant served its purpose of offering food for a hotel guest. However, I would have likely ventured to a nearby local restaurant instead if not for the circumstances. read more

Nice little spot inside of the Marriott. Stayed at this location for a week and sometimes after a busy day it's just easier to eat at the hotel especially when it has a spot like this with delicious food. I only took 1 star away because it's super overpriced but expected for a hotel restaurant. As for this restaurant I stopped in to eat and also for takeout. Each time got a drink or two at the bar. Shout out to Antonio who worked the bar most of the nights I was there. He was super charming and very attentive. Most of the staff there when I was there were younger individuals who were not only entertaining with great conversation but they were also on it when it came to the service. They all made it a great place to unwind. I took a few pics the one I didn't take was of their honey old bay wings .. all the food was great including those. If staying here .. check them out. Ate here multiple times from lunch to dinner and its decent but they have things to work on. Sat at the bar and Sam was the bartender. She did great but her compadre had a little sass that perhaps should have been contained and not spilled over for patrons to hear. Here's what I ate throughout the week: Wings - old bay and honey. Never had Old bay but I could only taste the honey. They were well crisped and large for an app. Salmon with crispy skin, yummy white sauce drizzled throughout, absolute delicious broccoli and a splash of lemon to seal the deal. Apple pie - super small/thin. Decent in taste. Marriott burger - requested medium just in case and pleasantly surprised it arrived correct. Flatbread - DO NOT recommend at all. When taking a bit a gush of oil spilled my entire mouth. So gross. They really need to fix that asap. Teas - sweet orange and passion were really strong and tasted very good. I looked into why they are so potent and they have natural flavors which isn't good. Bar chairs- omg not comfortable and they cut into the back of your thighs and cut off circulation and zero backing and sit back and chill. No yoga sitters on these stools. They do have other chair options if you sot elsewhere. From booths, tables, and couches. Horrible last impression was this experience: I came in and sat at the bar area. I had nothing but my phone and the table was empty. Sat two tables down from someone who is clearly working and eating. Sat there for 30 minutes while the older lady server looked a few times and decided NOT to attend me each time. I then had to find someone to help me. Her excuse was, she thought I was working. Since when do people working sit at an empty table looking straight ahead (not even on the phone) waiting. Meanwhile chic to right right of me has a laptop and on the phone working. We walked in for a business brunch. The restaurant was about half seated. The setting and decorations were contemporary, and lighting was very good. The service was quite slow. It took five or so minutes to get the drink order, and another five minutes to receive our hot beverages. After ordering main dishes, it took more than half hour to receive them. I was staying at the Marriott where this restaurant is located. I went down around 8:30pm on 10/19 to go to the bar and order some food to go while possibly having a drink. I was abruptly stopped by the host. The man asked me where I was going...I told him why I was there...he told be the bar was full...? I looked to the bar, there were people certainly sitting around bar...but full?? He turned me away. Decided to go to bed hungry because the family and I were leaving the next morning. The man who was the host on 10/19 at around 8:30pm should reconsider his career in hospitality, it's not his strong suit. read more

Warning... make sure you have ample time to eat here because this is some of the worst slowest service in history. They are in vacation mode in here I guess. Between ordering drinks, dinner, asking for check. The waitress took her sweet ole time. The food wasn't bad though. The crab dip had good flavor and had a good amount of crab in it. The wings were not my favorite of all time but by no means were they bad. They had a good crunch to them and a slight bit of heat. I ordered the burger as my main meal. The burger was slightly overcooked and a little too bready. Burgers are simple but the proportions have to be right. In the end I would definitely not recommend. Food was ok but service was bad and I RARELY complain about the service. They are located in a busy hotel so probably have gotten accustomed to having a crowd no matter how good the service is. Absolutely awful service. Waited forever for a drink order the again waited to order food for dinner. Food is fine but nothing special. We had to get up to help ourselves to water and never saw our waiter again until we flagged someone down for the bill. As we were staying at the hotel, went for breakfast (free as a Marriott member) 20 minutes after seating ourselves, no waiter other then getting us silverware, walked out to find breakfast elsewhere. Same experience at the bar later for cocktails before a football game. Either all staff is new or don't care. read more

The drinks are excellent, when you finally get one. The service is friendly, but definitely takes its sweeeet time. I came out of convenience, and there was a lot of back and forth with the kitchen around potential gluten free items (the server wasn't very knowledgeable), and I finally cobbled together some side vegetables and concentrated on my martini. The restaurant seems to cater to large groups at the conference center taking their time, which is completely appropriate. If I go back for a conference, I will not choose eat here again. read more

The restaurant itself is designed/decorated quite well. But... Just dropped in for a meeting and grabbed lunch to-go. I didn't check it before I left because I always try to assume noble intent when I'm in a restaurant that has $30+ meals on the menu. I don't want to be that person who pulls out my food and checks everything when I order to-go. After this experience, I will likely change this way of thinking. Ordered the bacon cheddar burger with no bun and no side of chips because I've been trying to watch my carbs...doing the whole keto thing. There was absolutely nothing greens on the menu but a salad to "sub" for my chips that they wanted to charge me an extra $5 for...really, I'm not getting a bun or a side and you are still charging me $5 for less than a handful of greens? No thanks. I drive the 35 minutes back to work only to open up my already lonely burger only to find NO BACON. So, needless to say, I was super pissed. Since I asked for no sides or bun, one would assume that the least you could do is make sure I had my bacon!!!! Oh and by the way, they serve a mumbo chicken flatbread {insert side eye}. I just love how these chefs come up with these authentic menus and never give credit to the cultures that are responsible. Went there for the first time tonight and it was terrible. The draft beers aren't 16 ounces. The staff are extremely unprofessional and talk about customers in front of us. Complaining when a woman ordered a cocktail and he actually had to do something. Threw dishes and glassware into bussing tub. The line cook was about to smoke a cig when we put in the order and he seemed so blown that he had to go make it. Now comes the worst part: the food. I ordered the chicken sandwich and it was awful. I think the grill marks were stamped on and it was microwaved. Gross. My husband had the fish and chips and the tartar sauce tasted like plain mayo. The fries were soggy and burned...tasted like they were sitting under heat lamps for hours. I ate 2 bites of my sandwich and the bartender never asked how the food was. I've been a server for 10 years and this is an awful restaurant. Enough said. Pass. read more

This place just opened on the UMUC Marriott property and it is in no way your typical hotel restaurant. Very cool design and a casual atmosphere make this a great place to get a drink and a fantastic meal. I had the Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf with the Watershed Martini (cucumber & gin). The service was really friendly and the bar was fully stocked. The rigatoni was well received. I had the skirt steak and while it looked nice but it was thin and WAY to salty... The fries were fine. I stopped into The Common for dinner last week and was BLOWN AWAY. I ordered the grilled cheese sliders with tomato fondue, I loved it-- unfortunately I'll never know how delicious the other apps are because I'll only ever order this one!! I had the Salmon entree and it was amazing with the dill sauce that comes with it and I was shocked at how much there was (I had to box half for a snack later). For dessert I tried the apple cobbler which was out of this world. I was really looking forward to visiting College Park after 7 years. I stayed at the Marriott because it was on comped and I was attending a lecture on campus. I also was impressed with the menu. However, the food and the service at the Commons was very poor. As I've sat here, 2 different couples have come and gone at the bar because no one was there to take their orders. My $42 crab cake dinner did not have sauce, the broccoli was cold and mostly stalks and I couldn't ask for anything else because there was no one behind the bar to help. I believe he was in the kitchen cooking. I regret my one night in college park in 8 years I chose this place to eat. read more

This business canceled my reservation even though I made it over a week in advance with Kevin, and called the day of to push it back an hour with some Spanish lady who sounded like she had no business answering the phone. Our server was slow, the food was slow to come out, and my friend's flatbread came out cold. An opportunity came to sample some of their offerings during a recent stay at the College Park Marriott. Arriving late in the evening after a long day of flights, it was a pleasant surprise that they were still serving meals through to 11 pm. In search of a lighter fare, I decided to go with their short rib panini. It's a simple, yet satisfying one - a generous portion of shredded meat married with melted cheese between two lightly-grilled artisan slices. We were back here for our team dinner after a day's hard work - the Black Angus NY strip was a natural choice :) It was a quality cut with understated flavor, and accompanied with equally-understated vegetables. It's good, but I've had better for the price. The restaurant is located in the conference building across from the main hotel lobby. It takes on a generic upscale decor with clean conservative tones. No issues with the service. Aside: If you're into paintings and sculptures, be sure to tour the corridors of this conference building. There's also a special atrium and viewing room at the opposite end. read more

Curt and prompt but didn't seem familiar with the menu. The portions were good, on the bigger side for lunch. The salmon was salty, maybe a bit over, but I didn't mind it. The cauliflower was served green and it wasn't mentioned on the menu. My partner had the chicken and waffle which he seemed to enjoy. read more

I decided to eat here because most places on campus had closed and I didn't have transportation. The restaurant has a nice decor and friendly staff. Service was great, the food was just meh. I had the spinach salad, which had fresh and high quality ingredients. Overall, it was rather bland - not much of a flavor boost from the dressing. Overall competent, but not on a 'must eat here' list. They do have good coffee and are are open early. read more

The restaurant was PERFECT for my cousins's engagement lunch. The menu choices were: bacon cheeseburger with French fries, chicken Caesar salad, or chicken breast on ciabatta bread. The burger looked the best so I went with that. It was good.The decor for the restaurant looks beautiful- updated and modern- just as it pictured here in yelp. Very impressive. I made a reservation for 8 for my Mom's birthday. The restaurant is on the conference center side and NOT the hotel side. The decor is VERY aesthetically pleasing; I can definitely see this spot getting a lot of traffic during games. However, on this Saturday afternoon at 2, we were the ONLY group in there until a party of three came. We had two kids - the kid menu is very good. We got a variety of meals - from salads with salmon added to burgers and crab cakes. Everyone enjoyed their food. We did have to send one item back, the grilled cheese - because it had a sauce that the 8 y/o lad did not like. I am sure that they mentioned it on the menu, but he swore (well he CAN'T swear in my presence) that the menu didn't say it. All in all, this is a great spot. I had a class on campus after our lunch so I grabbed my pc and sat in the lobby area - of the conference center. That was very relaxing and their free wi-fi was da best ! read more

We stayed in the hotel upstairs for 3 nights this restaurant definitely saved me from starvation numerous times considering the closest place to eat is at least 20 mins of walk away. Right from the first night of arrival, after a long frustrating day of travel and desperately in need of some drinks we were greeted by a super friendly bartender who offered us free beer samples even it was 5 mins before closing. My boyfriend bought me a turkey sandwich to take back to our room and not only it was yummy it lasted me a whole.friggin.day the following day! It was barely enough but truth is truth. We had 1 dinner and 2 breakfasts there after that and in my opinion the Common isn't a cheap place to eat but the experience of good taste, big portion and friendly staff in a cool yet relaxed space is worth every dollar. Decent higher end American fare. Our party had the crab cakes...when in Rome right? They were extremely good. The restaurant also has a kids menu, which came in handy for our crew. The only issue we had was that many items in their wine list were not available. The waiter said they had a new menu so we just had to order a bottle from the waiter's suggestion. We made a reservation after a Maryland basketball game. When we arrived, we were told it would be a few minutes. Then, a few minutes later we were told that there had been a glitch with Open Table and that they couldn't seat us even thought it was practically empty. Wow. Beautiful place. Awesome food. Their steak and appetizers are amazing. The seating is really cool and it is a nice quiet place -- especially on week nights. If you go to UMD and your parents have not taken you here, then you are seriously missing out. Its prices are reasonable compared to some restaurants in College Park which are mediocre but very expensive. This is a fancy, but not expensive place. Parking is easy here, and its in a better location than any of the other restaurants on busy roads downtown. The food is delicious. read more
