We wanted to use College Cab because they're smaller and locally-owned. We called the day before to reserve a cab for one of those horrendously early flights out of CHO; Tim said no problem, he'd arrange for one of his guys to get us. Luckily we were given that guy's phone number, because when he didn't show up and the window to make our flight was closing, we called him. When we did, we were treated to what was in my opinion, a perhaps still-under-the-influence sleepy voice saying "yeah...man...I'm on my way...I'll leave in a little bit..." Yeah. We jumped in the car and drove ourselves to CHO, incurring $60 for long-term parking. We reached out to Tim to let him know what happened, but never heard back. read more

My review will cover the opiniosn of all 6 of my friends and family members that joined together for a wine tour yesterday with Tim, himself! It does not suffice to say we were so incredibly pleased with yesterday's venture. We had family come down from New Jersey and Northern VA, friends come from Southwest VA - everyone congregated at my house and hopped into Tim's luxury SUV taxi (which I highly, highly recommend as well) at precisely the time we'd agreed to be picked up. Our needs were prioritized at every moment and Tim was also enjoyable to talk with... he could even put up with our sassy uncle and my friend the backseat driver ;) We just really had a great time, will be doing it again, and wanted to once again show our grateful appreciation of College Cab showing us a great time worry-free. PS- Tim also helped us with the itinerary and a word to the wise GO with this man's suggestions!!!! We're certainly glad we did. :) read more

College cab was supposed to take me and my friend to Dulles airport in May of 2015. The owner said that our ride, including space for the luggage, would be $150. When the cab arrived, however, the driver had a different opinion. He said that we had a lot of luggage (it did fit comfortably in his cab). This guy knew that our hands were tied because we had an international flight to catch in 5 hours. He took full advantage of that fact and told us that he would charge us $50 for the extra fuel consumed to the airport and $80 (!!!) for a 'mandatory' tip. I was infuriated when the driver made such an obnoxious demand but I couldn't say anything. We basically had to pay $280 for the trip, $130 more than we had originally planned. Oh and BTW, the driver decided he was gonna smoke pot halfway into the trip. FML. read more

Dale was absolutely wonderful, and we will always call on him when we return to Charlottesville in the future. He worked with us to arrange a day-of pick up and winery tour, taking us to three different wineries for an enjoyable and safe afternoon. He was a pleasure to ride with, and he felt like part of the group by the time we parted ways at the end of our evening! I never wrote a review before but I think this experience is worth documenting: I called the cab company to schedule a taxi to pick me up from my dorm and help me move to a new place across the street. I understood this isn't a U-Haul and didn't expect the cab driver to help me move in. The deal was only to drive me and my suitcase to my new place down the street, and my housemates would help me move in. Because I was pregnant, I didn't really find it fitting to walk carrying a large amount of luggage. My issue with the cab driver I received is as follows: 1) He called to ask me where my dorm is exactly, which could have easily been done with a GPS. He was very rude when I tried explaining, then hung up. 2) He claimed he would arrive in 3 minutes then took 15 minutes. It was the first day of summer classes and I was on a tight schedule. 3) He asked me if I was moving. And when I tried to explain that I didn't need his help. He interrupted and raised his voice to ask, "Yes or no? Because I charge extra." 4) When he arrived, he actually beckoned me like a dog and said, "Hey you! I need to talk to you!" Then proceeded to ask me about how I was moving. I was visibly upset at this point and told him I didn't appreciate him yelling at me. Then he replied, " I don't like your body language. I'm a good guy. I'm a Christian, with a wife and kids." all of which was not relevant to the matter at hand. Upset, I told him to simply drive me and I would move my things myself. But then he just shook his head said, "You're scaring me. I'm leaving." And drove off. Although my 5'0" frame didn't quite stack up to his 6 feet, I somehow managed to scare him! I had to actually carry my own luggage due to the time constraint and because no other cabs were available to come in on short notice. I ended up missing my class. 5) When I called the cab company to notify them, they simply stated that they would look into it and then never called me back despite promising they would. I am throughly disgusted with this company and will not bother to ever use their service again. Treating a customer like this is completely unprofessional and reprehensible, yet no action has been warranted. All the cab company could do was offer me a free ride the next time I needed, which was is pointless because I would really not prefer to have to deal with this type of treatment again. read more

I had a very negative experience with College Cab. I hailed a cab from a winery in the area on a Saturday night, asking to be picked up and taken back to Charlottesville. The dispatcher told me he was sending someone and it would be 20-25 minutes. When the driver arrived, we got in the cab and headed back to Charlottesville. I was concerned right away because the driver did NOT have the meter running, and no one had quoted a fare or a flat rate. When we got to the hotel, the driver told me the fare was $75, which seemed excessive. I paid it. When I got to the room, I pulled up a map to see how far the trip was. It was 15 miles. I called the dispatcher and asked what their mileage charge was, and he told me $3.00 per mile. So where did my extra $30 charge come from? He called the driver and then called me back. He said he did not know why the driver didn't have the meter running, that he shouldn't have done that, and that the driver will be coming back to my hotel to refund the original fare and charge me $45, which is what the fare should have been. When the driver came back, he tried to tell me how he wasn't trying to rip me off and that the dispatcher told him to do a flat rate. They refunded my original purchase and charged me $45. A cab company picking up a customer and not running the meter without any kind of quote or agreement up front is absurd. The driver can just charge whatever he wants. I wonder how many others have had an experience like this and chose not to question the charge. I would not recommend this company. read more

I called this company and it is also the Hilldrup cab company. I asked for a rate quote, because I live outside of Spotisilvania Regional Hospital and was trying to get to my job in the Southpoint Plaza. The woman I spoke to was rude and yelled at me over the phone, and when I called again asking if their website the collegecab.com was correct in saying at the bottom of every webpage that there is "10% off metered rate with Student ID" and she screamed at me saying "the owner of this company is also the manager okay, and he didn't build the website so I don't know how that got there!" I asked her, being a student, if she did offer the discount if I showed my ID and she said "No, we only do senior citizen discounts, and you're not a senior citizen." Do not use this company, they are rude and unprofessional. read more

I booked the College Cab for a day trip to some breweries/wineries based on the reviews here and the very reasonable hourly rates, and I have to say, they lived up to their great reputation. Since I'm from out of the area, Tim was very helpful in creating an itinerary. Our driver was very knowledgeable on the area and all of the different breweries/wineries. He was super friendly and fun to hang out with for the day! We ended up using them our whole weekend. When we first arrived in C'ville, we tried calling another cab company for a short trip to the downtown area, and they said they were too busy, so we called college cab and they came right away! I would highly recommend them for both brewery/winery tours and for local trips around town. read more

Had a girls' weekend in Charlottesville and on Saturday evening, there was a one hour wait to get a Yellow Cab. College Cab came to the rescue with 3 big SUVs about 20 min after I called them. The drivers were all very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend. read more

Don't get carried away by their flat rates. They have come up with bunch of extra charges that will subsequently be informed to you like parking charges, additional drop location charges etc. The driver was good but we were disappointed that we had to pay as much as any other cab company and the flat rates were meaningless. read more

ZERO STARS IF I COULD RATE THEM! WORST CAB COMPANY IN TOWN. DRIVER WITH LICENSE PLATE H128115 IS ERRATIC AND DANGEROUS. While driving on my way to work I passed him to go faster because he was driving under the speed limit. When I passed him it must have pissed him off because he then changed lanes and gunned it to get in front of me (with a passenger in his car!!!). As soon as he got in front of me he drastically slowed down again, so I went to go around him again because he obviously wasnt paying attention to his speed or the other drivers around him. When I went to pass him he sped up to go over 20 MILES over the speed limit so that I could not get back over into the lane!!! Then when I realized what he was doing (that he was just being a horrible, reckless, and angry driver) I slowed down to just suck it up and get behind him because he seemed unstable and like he had road rage. When I put my brakes on to get behind him he SLAMMED on his brakes so I could not get back over into the lane almost causing an accident. DO NOT RIDE WITH THIS CAB COMPANY UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR LIFE TO BE PUT IN DANGER! IF YOU SEE THEIR DRIVERS OUT STAY AWAY FROM THEM THEY ARE CRAZY! read more

Absolutely horrific experience with College Cab. As a freshman in college without a car, I rely solely on taxi services to get to and from appointments outside out the bus routes. I called the day before to make a reservation for a ride to and from an appointment, and called again the morning of to confirm these appointments. After being spoken to quite disrespectfully both times, not only did College Cab cancel my ride back from my appointment, but informed me of this once we arrived at my destination and discovered that the office was closed. It was only after asking the driver if he could take me back to my dorm (which he refused) that he mentioned that he had to cancel the 9:30 a.m. reservation (an hour from my first reservation) as well, leaving me stranded at the closed office far from campus. Not only did College Cab provide utterly embarrassing customer service, the driver was both disrespected and completely unapologetic. Would not recommend their services to anyone, an absolute waste of time, money, and energy. read more

We reserved College Cab for a wine tour this past week. My husband is in the Navy and just got back from being gone for a couple of months and we were celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary. We had one full day in Charlottesville and I entrusted that day with the owner, Tim. When I spoke with him on the phone, he was great with loads of information. He sent me an email confirmation and said he'd be calling the next day to get my credit card information. He never did, so I texted him a couple of days before our trip and he reassured me not to worry because he would personally be driving us around for our wine tour. He said he'd pick us up at our hotel at 10:30 am and he would be driving an SUV. At 10:31 am, I received a phone call from a driver, not Tim, saying that he was running late because he overslept. The driver then arrived in a minivan cab with the College Cab logo obstructing our view out the side windows. Even then, my husband and I were trying to give the company the benefit of the doubt. The driver was very friendly and took us to our first destination. However, when we got there, we found out it was closed. We basically spent $35 for an hour of driving to a destination that was not even open using the itinerary the company had set. I was first very upset with the fact that Tim, the owner of the company, should have called me and told me about the change of plans. Then I was even more upset with paying someone so much money when all they had to do was look up the brewery and find out the hours of operation before wasting our time and money driving us there. Along with the fact that we couldn't enjoy looking at any of the views because of the huge logo on our windows, the van's brakes were squeaking every time the driver stopped. We then went to a winery and decided to look up the next place and found out that that place was closed, too. Luckily we were smart enough to look that up and when we told the driver, he was very surprised. You would think that after screwing up the first place that he could have looked up the other places while sitting in the cab. We then went to two more places, just to get lunch and a cidery in the area that I wanted to try, and asked the driver to take us back to our hotel. We cut our day almost in half because we didn't want to waste anymore of our time and money. I was very upset about the choice that I made and knew that I could not do anything about it because we only had one full day there. I emailed Tim that same evening to let him know how upset I was and to give him an opportunity to explain himself or apologize and never heard back from him. This to me is EXTREMELY poor customer service. I would NOT use this company and would give it zero stars if that was an option. The couple of extra bucks that you would save is definitely NOT worth it. Remember: you get what you pay for. Unfortunately, I learned that the hard way. read more
