Our family stayed at the Holladay House to attend our sons wedding in Orange, VA. The Holladay House was perfect and we couldnt have been happier with our stay. Pat and Monica were excellent hosts. Every room was well decorated, well maintained, and clean. The common areas are beautiful and, once again, well maintained. Every morning the Keurig coffee maker was filled with water and ready, with cups, along with bottled water. Pat or Monica would check in periodically and were very responsive the few times we needed them. Finally, the Holladay House is located in downtown Orange. There are excellent restaurants and bars within walking distance. If you are staying in Orange, or close by, we highly recommend staying at the Holladay House. read more

Stayed here for a nice weekend getaway to see family and hike. Sorely needed. This B&B is beautiful and welcoming. Pat and his wife are so kind and accommodating. The house has been redone and the decor inside is new and contemporary but still fits with the period of the older home. Rooms are beautiful, clean and well-kept and there was a Roku on the tv with wifi. The back door has a keypad lock so you can come and go as you please with ease and there was a welcome package with snacks, jam, and a handwritten welcome note. Location is great because, with ample parking in the back of the home, you can walk around the town to antique, explore and eat at one of a dozen or more restaurants. They don't do the traditional breakfast but had a small bar well-stocked with coffee, tea, bananas, fresh pastries, and juice and water. Enough for me! Usually I kind'a wanna go out and explore on my own anyway and the town has several nice places for brunch (Spoon and Spindle was my fav). Pat was great and communicative through email/text but wasn't hovering in the way some B&B owners are. There to greet me but then left me alone to enjoy the stay but was available for questions if I had any.... perfect! Would absolutely come back any time. read more

What a lovely place and owners. You feel like their attention is all on you. I would highly recommend staying there in one of their beautifully decorated bedrooms. Also you must try a high tea or if no time pop in for a less formal scone and coffee/tea. Both teas and coffees come in decaf too. There is a lovely veranda if you just want a take away scone and coffee. Just walk around the side and relax or enjoy visiting with friends. read more

We had our private wedding ceremony here and it was perfect. Sharon takes care of everything from getting the officiant to booking the dinner and everything in between. She is so helpful and sweet and everything she arranged was perfect. The house is beautiful and everything about it is charming and relaxed. The breakfasts are amazing and Sharon made delicious tweaks to my dish to make it vegetarian. We stayed in the Ivy Suite which was huge and perfect for us to get ready in and to relax in (the jetted tub is awesome). The Holladay House is perfect and we look forward to staying there again in the future. We wanted to take a getaway vacation to Virginia wine country based on some experiences we had near home with the wine. Did some research and ended up here. What a great (and lucky) choice. The wine tour program is great (recommend the local vs the regional trip), Sharon is a great help with anything you could want cooks an amazing breakfast. You'd be an absolute fool to not get up in time to have breakfast. She also tolerated my need for having my room in the mid 60s and still feeling hot. Wow! My bf surprised me by taking me here for my birthday the other weekend. We arrived and were greeted by Jim (Sharon's "helper" since Sam was out of town). Jim gave us the tour and then took us up to our room, the Blue Room. The room was really spacious and so pretty! I loved the decorating and how luxurious it all felt! The bed was nice and fluffy! Breakfast the next morning was awesome! We had a fresh peach and yogurt cup to start. I got coffee. My bf doesn't drink coffee, so they offered him hot chocolate, which he enjoyed. Breakfast was a sweet cheese crepe with a homemade 3 berry compote, along with 2 sausage patties and some fresh kiwi. It was so delicious! I truly enjoyed my short stay at the Holladay House and appreciated the level of attention and hospitality that we received! I felt that they went out of their way to accommodate us and make us feel comfortable. They also gave us passes to go to Barboursville Winery, which was about 20 minutes away. Also nearby, Montpelier. I would definitely recommend this B&B! thanks again for a great stay! read more

This place was our Favorite and first Bed and Breakfast. My husband and decided to stay at Holladay house for a few days and it turned out to be magical. The rustic and antique feel of the home and the rooms were so beautiful. We stayed in the Ivy room with the Aphrodite package. Our mini moon was a success. The food was great and we had a couples massage in our room. The breakfast, my Gosh the breakfast was different every morning and it was super delicious. Not to forget, it is in proximity to so many awesome restaurants and a beautiful winery with such great people. A delightful B&B in the heart of Virginia wine county. We stayed here the weekend after our wedding in 2005. I decided to book a return trip to celebrate our 10th anniversary. Sharon and Sam have done a wonderful job updating and improving the rooms. The gas fireplace inserts are just one example. Their breakfasts are scrumptious (as are the cookies for snacking) and hospitality is top notch. The tasting coupons for MANY local wineries is a great touch. Holladay House is a quiet and comfortable inn with excellent service. We stayed there for two nights and spent the weekend visiting the many wineries in the area. Sharon is as sweet as they come and makes some great food! Her cookies are amazing and the breakfast both mornings was delicious. She even remembered on morning #2 that I drank decaf and my boyfriend preferred OJ over coffee. Our room (Garden Room) was spacious and quiet. Did I mention it was quiet here? If you are looking for a good night's sleep you will get it here. If you are in the area to go wine tasting I think Holladay House is a better choice over some of the pricier inns. For one, I think what you get for the price is amazing. Also, being right in Orange gives you several dining options within walking distance. I would definitely stay here again. read more

My husband and I had an excellent experience and stay at this B&B. We purchased a package and Sharon suggested an itinerary for visiting the nearby sites. That was great since we had no knowledge of the area. The B&B is located right in the cute little downtown area of Orange and close driving distance to history sites and local wineries. Sharon was very attentive to our needs and was available and helpful to suggest additional places to visit. My husband has celiac and so is on a strict gluten free diet. It was our first visit to Orange, VA and the Holladay House made us feel at home! Sharon was an awesome host. Our breakfast each morning was delicious and the recipes were original. My husband and I picked this B&B for its location between two of the locations we wanted to visit during our weekend stay and for advertising a large garden tub. While the garden tub did not disappoint, Sharon's wonderful hospitality and cooking really became the gem of our trip. The best way to describe my experience at the Holladay House is that of staying at your friends house when you were younger and having their mom cook and fuss over you (if their mom lived in a historic house with a sweet tub in every room and had a culinary degree), it had that same welcoming atmosphere and guanine kind feel to our stay. There were fresh cookies to munch on in the dining room at all hours, along with wine, local beer, and candies. The robes provided in the room were luxurious, along with the bath "tea Bags" also provided. As for the breakfast part of the B&B, we had a course of poached pear in a cranberry ginger "sauce" with craisins and ginger rim, followed by a crustless quiche wrapped in pork, and delicious local jelly with biscuits (I unfortunately forgot to photograph this impressive spread) for the first morning. The next morning, before our cave hike, we had a first course of an apple pinwheel drizzled in honey and topped with walnuts and dried cherries, followed by a hearty course of fluffy French toast, bacon "steak", and pineapple. I would be remiss if I did not also mention the charm the local area offers, the local vineyard six miles down the road she directed us to for a free wine tasting (Honah Lee) even managed to find a wine my husband liked. (Ask to try the raisin wine!) unfortunately as we always were gone during their opening hours, we missed being able to browse along any of the cute shops along the street it's located on, but we enjoyed the live music at the Light Well (though their cooking is not up to par with the B&B, it's fine for drinks). All in all we absolutely loved our stay here and would recommend it to everyone! read more

We've stayed twice at Holladay House and have only good things to say. Sharon and her family are warm and convivial hosts, she is a dreadnought baker and the breakfasts are quite wonderful. We stayed in the Garden Room and the Ivy Suite, my preference is the Ivy, a fabulous jacuzzi with shower in one room, and I especially like the separate WC. I must admit the impressive TV didn't get much use, there were simply more fun things to do! read more

This is a cozy historic inn located near wineries, antique shops, and beautiful Virginia countryside. Sam and Sharon are wonderful hosts: generous, responsive, and full of excellent suggestions for places to visit in the area. My husband and I wanted a getaway before we had our son (I was pregnant). Sharon was amazing! There was a special package waiting for us, but Sharon made sure it was prenatal friendly. She had special cheese, fruit, and sparkling cider (instead of champagne). She also prepared a special breakfast for me since I was diabetic. We truly enjoyed our stay. Then, the cherry on top was the massage in the room for me and my husband. Sharon and Sam really go above and beyond. We had a great stay at the Holladay House for our Anniversary. The innkeeper, Sharon, was extremely helpful and welcoming. She made us reservations at a walk-to restaurant that included Happy Anniversary on our personalized menus, as well as serving delicious food (pecan crusted trout and crispy duck). For breakfast at the inn, we had petite quiche, fruit with lemon honey glaze, and fresh breads. I have a gluten sensitivity, but was included with snicker doodle cookies in the afternoon and cinnamon toast at breakfast. The Blue room was beautifully appointed--although the only room with a bath in the hallway. For that--I would choose one of the rooms with an in suite bath. We would happily return. read more

We stayed 4 nights at Holladay House in October and our family filled every room for 2 nights. The historic house is immaculate and cozy.Breakfasts are outrageously tasty! Sharon keeps her delicious homemade baked goodies and coffee and tea always available. Lovely going to bed with peppermint tea and a cookie every night! The beds are comfy and everyone slept very well. Sharon is a superstar inn keeper. She knows all the tourist spots of interest and she well connected with all the local resources. Spent the New Year at the Holladay House and can only say it was fantastic. The ambiance and decorations were terrific. Sharon is a fabulous host and very accommodating. She has coupons for free wine tastings at a number of wineries. All of which are within a short, easy drive. The restaurants in the area were great. Ok, I'm relatively new to reviewing, but when I'm researching a place, I prefer longer reviews and have typed one below. But first, here are some quick pros and cons: PROS: Beautiful house, really friendly and helpful innkeepers, great rooms, softest sheets I've ever felt (no joke), decent starting point to explore Central VA, and amazing breakfast. CONS: wifi was a little weak, creaky floors. (both trivial I think) This was my first B&B experience, so I might be biased. I've always vaguely thought that I'd visit one some day, but figured it was more of a thing older couples did. As a birthday present this year, though, I received a gift certificate for The Holladay House. It included the room, an add-on package of tickets to the three presidential historic houses in Central Virginia, and a picnic lunch. I'm a history fan, and after about 5 years in Virginia I had not visited any, so it seemed right up my alley. Called them up, booked a reservation for 16-August and went ahead and upgraded to one of the suites. Sharon, one of the innkeepers, was incredibly friendly and ready to answer any questions I might have had. When the weekend rolled around, my wife and I drove down from Northern Virginia (took us right around two and a half hours, including a stop for lunch on the way). We arrived a bit before check-in so ended up strolling around the little downtown area in Orange. Met a nice lady who ended up being the bread supplier for the B&B and bought a few things as a preview. It also turned out that all of the other couples staying the weekend were in our age range, so throw out my "older couples" misconception too. Check-in was easy, Sharon greeted us at the door and, after helping out another patron, showed us to our room and went over a few details (tickets, how to get in the house after hours, local places to eat, etc.). The room was great, very large, on the ground floor, with a patio, a large tub my wife loved and, honestly, the softest sheets I have ever felt on the bed. Not typically something a guy would notice, but they were that incredible. The house is old, and historic, so the floors were a bit loud (they're supposed to be!). Not something that bothered my wife and I, we're both heavy sleepers but, if you're not, I'd recommend one of the upstairs rooms. The wifi was also fairly weak in our room, but there's a great coffee shop/bar a couple blocks away with free internet (or, the common rooms in the house). This shouldn't be an issue for people, though, because if you're at a B&B you should be a bit "disconnected" and have some fun. Breakfast both days was wonderful, as was the picnic lunch we got. I'm a big breakfast fan any day, but really enjoyed the meals Sharon made. As many of the ingredients as possible (read: almost all of them) were locally sourced from the area. This is great, because it helps out other small businesses, and means that your food is a lot less processed. Quick note on the sightseeing, in case you're looking at the same itinerary. We opted to take the picnic lunch on Sunday instead of Saturday when we visited Charlottesville and the historic houses there. Mitchie Tavern (tickets to tour the historic area were also included) serves a great all you can eat lunch of traditional colonial fare. There are good places to picnic at Monticello, and Ash Lawn-Highland, but we were glad we ate at the Tavern and saved the picnic lunch for Montpelier/the Sunday drive back. Back in Orange, there are only a handful of restaurants, enough to last you through the weekend, but not much variety. This shouldn't really be seen as a complaint, Orange is a very small town, and can't be expected to have lots of choice. I did want to bring it up, though, as it may be helpful in planning your trip. Overall, I really enjoyed my trip. It was fun, relaxing, and I'll be eyeing some of the other weekend packages for a return stay. read more
