That's enough to push a lot of people away and/or make any decent food lost its taste. Luckily they are located in a "deadend" so unless you are a determined foodie, regular people don't come here :P The media hype has since died down and there is no longer the ridiculous queue. In fact, I am glad this place is still around (as many don't). The food and coffee is still as good I remembered and it is still a cash business. However, without the grumpy (and hungry) eaters staring at you waiting eagerly for your table, I found my experience very enjoyable. I should come back more frequent now :)

For a cafe in the SoHo vicinity, I expect nothing less than 100% hipster--and that exactly…read moredescribes every component of my visit to Cafe Deadend: brunch items with liberal use of runny eggs, crafty photogenic pastries, a posh ambiance that looks like a Tumblr photoset in real life, a whimsically obscure location, limited seating that gets crowded easily, Instagramable latte art, a paper menu that looks seasonal, coffee campers with shiny Macbooks, and unfortunately, a slightly marked-up pricing for the complete hipster dining experience. [THE GOOD] The highlight was definitely the apple tart--somehow they came up with the ingenious idea of taking a whole apple and building the tart around it. It comes out horizontally sliced (and thankfully de-seeded) in a unique presentation and a nice, strong apple taste that goes great with the caramel sauce, pistachio topping, and vanilla ice cream. [THE MEDIOCRE] I got the steak salad because I always find myself vegetable-deficient and craving salads when I'm in HK. It was quite good and the portion size was okay. My friends got a BLT and a ham sandwich with which they were generally satisfied. However there was nothing particularly special about the food and it was wayyyyy pricey. At first it seemed rather normal to me coming from the exalted San Franciscan standard of living, but for this price in SF at least I would get local/organic/fair trade/etc etc and mind-blowing quality, but Cafe Deadend turned out to be rather mediocre. My friends also reminded me of how expensive HK$80+ sandos and sandwiches are when there is in all the yummy and cost-effective glory of HK food. [THE BAD] A bunch of my friends developed mosquito bites after our lunch here :/ Not sure if it's something in the cafe or from the semi-wilderness of the Mid-Levels neighborhood. [THE VERDICT] If you are into hipster things, this is your natural habitat. If you are looking for good food, try the apple tart. If you are looking for cost-effective food, Cafe Deadend might be a bit of a dead end.

Large windows and cozy furniture take advantage of the endless pedestrian traffic to tune the fine art of people watching. Hong Kong rocks and this location allows you to relax with a decent cup of coffee and take it in. The coffee is by no means exotic but is good enough for me. Call it a Starbucks type of flavor with less bitterness. A couple of markdowns for not opening until 7:30am and needing to ask for a wifi code that expires after only 30 minutes. The coffee is the standard fare that you get in any Pacific Coffee across HK, such is there tenacity with order and consistency across the brand. However, this particular branch has one great thing going for it, a "secret" area out the back. Behind the baristas, is a small area with four tables, that looks down onto the pedestrianised area below. It is an ideal place to grab a coffee and do some work, whilst enjoying lounge versions of pop tunes. There are plenty of plugs for charging phones and laptops, but no free wifi, so you will have to use your own, or pay for it. I personally like to occasionally switch off the wifi and step away form the clutter of tech noise for a moment, and this is the ideal place for it. If you get here between 9-10am, you will see the lovely old lady who lives opposite looking over her wall at the passing people traffic. However, as well as your laptops, bring some mozzie repellant. They seem to have a few of these unfriendly guests buzzing around, and I assume it is due to the big pot plant in the corner. Otherwise, come and zone out for a while, read the paper, catch up on your work, it's all good!

I love the rose iced latte with soy and less sweet. I'd say they were pretty consistent. 5/6 times they made it just as I asked. The only bummer is that for iced drinks, they only carry one size which is the small. And that only includes on shot of espresso. If you are used to larger drinks like me, you'll want to add an extra shot! My girlfriend liked their frozen matcha drink, which I thought was way too sweet. We also tried their very berry smoothie which was meh. Although, they say there is no dairy in the smoothie mix, there totally is. We both are somewhat lactose intolerant and could feel the dairy immediately after drinking it. Prices are reasonable compared to what we are used to in the states. They come with food and a drink, and most people get hot coffee because their coffee is AMAZING. It's UCC Japanese-style roasted coffee, so it's not the typical coffee you're used to drinking. It's much smoother and richer and I actually prefer UCC coffee to western-style coffee. The iced coffee is very refreshing, though when served this way the ice dilutes the flavor of the coffee so I prefer opting for the hot coffee. The tea set menu doesn't change often, and the first few options are always waffles - both sweet and savory, like waffles with blueberries and ice cream, matcha and red bean waffles, tuna salad with waffles etc. They gave other items too like French toast and a slice of cake, but the waffles are amazing and I choose that almost every time I'm there for tea. The waffles don't have the overly 'eggy' taste that I find in a lot of waffles at other places, and they're just the right about of sweet. The set comes with two waffles which to me is just about right for an afternoon tea set - doesn't leave me feeling bloated, but I don't feel like I've barely eaten either.
