Steve's a nice guy, no question. So, I had him come to fix my grandfather clock. The chime was not chiming in sync with the appropriate hour. He came, put new batteries in it, turned the hands a bit and tightened them. Then it stopped chiming appropriately within two weeks. I live in Davis County. I called and said he can come up whenever he already has an appointment up here and to not make a special trip. He comes about two or three weeks later and determines I need a new movement. He quotes $175. I said, 'ok.' A few weeks later he calls me because he can't remember what the inside of the clock looks like and needs me to take a picture and email it to him. Ok. So I do. (I took several.) Two months later . . . yes, two months. He calls me from his cell phone out of the blue to tell me he'll be in the area and if he can come by in a few minutes. Good thing I was home. He installs a Seiko movement. The new chime is absolute crap and the speaker sounds blown. He's trying to adjust it to make it acceptable. He finally agrees that it's not acceptable and takes everything with him. Two months later . . . yes, two more months. I call his 'office' several times during a three-hour period and there's a busy signal. I finally get through to his wife. I have been incredibly cordial and flexible during this entire experience, by the way. So, I ask if my new movement is ready and if he'll be in my area any time soon. So, she says, "He'll be up that way on Monday. I'll have him call you to schedule a time." "Ok, sounds good," I say. Monday comes along and he hadn't called me. Out of nowhere I get a call saying he's 15 minutes away. Geez, again, good thing I was home. He came in and put in the new movement but that caused the pendulum to be about five inches lower than it was prior and no longer matched up with the window. He wasn't too proactive in suggesting he fix it, but I was able to talk him into it and he did so happily. Besides taking over four months get my clock back (just the face and movement, leaving me with a faceless clock) he had the gall to charge me $200 for his 'travel'. So, number one, I told you at the beginning not to make a special effort to travel up my way, and to only come when you'd already be up here, which you clearly took to heart considering both times you called me from your cell phone 15 minutes prior. Secondly, it's your fault the first movement sounded like crap. Not mine. The only reason I hired someone from Taylorsville when I live in Davis County is because clock repairs are hard to come by up here. Here's the deal: Sure, hire Steve. Nice guy and knows what he's doing. But get everything in writing before hand. Steve, you should have given me a discount for taking so bloody long, not charged a surcharge for your travel. FOUR MONTHS! Unacceptable. read more

The man does stand by his work. Westminster didn't sound quite right to me after two weeks of listening to it. Called Steve he and he came out a couple days later, on a Saturday no less, and fixed it up. Tones are striking clear and strong. No charge. read more

Last June, Steve came and serviced both of our grandfather clocks They had been running fine and I just wanted to have them cleaned and serviced, it had been so long. He said that there was a lose bearing on the big one and replaced it. It worked (the quarter hour chime) for about two weeks, then quit working. I called him about it and he said next time he had business down here he'd stop by. I live in Emery County. He finally stopped by last MARCH, (Yes, 9 months later.) When he pulled out the movement it started working properly. He looked at it, did what he could, and put it back. It worked for about 4 days after that. He said to keep i touch about how it goes. The last time I got his voice mail, and the two times before that I got his wife. I'm coming upon 1 year with no chimes in this clock, and am having second thoughts about this choice. Steve at the Clock Doc did fix my clock, but only after a year of waiting and many, many phone calls. When I dropped it off, I was told 4 to 6 weeks - 6 weeks being a long time. Steve even told me that if I hadn't heard from them in 6 weeks to make sure to call because that meant it was probably fixed but they had just forgotten to call and tell me it was done. When I called to check at 6 weeks, his wife laughed that I had been told that and it would be MUCH longer. After that I called about every 2 months, each time they would look for the clock while I was on the phone, going from room to room and clearly not being able to find it. (They work from their home and have clocks in every bedroom and nook and cranny). As it became clear that they couldn't find my clock, that they would always tell me that they would find it and call me soon. I would call again in a month or two, same routine - never once did they find it. (It is a large wall clock). Once I was told they had found it - it was on the work bench, just needed to be put together and they would call me next week. I waited about a month, called again, they couldn't find it. The workbench scenario was clearly a falsehood to keep me going because I didn't get it for more than 6 months after that. When I would point out it had been 6 months or 8 months, or 10 months, the wife would tell me that was not uncommon and infer that I was really being a pain to keep calling. After a year my husband called to say that he was just going to come get it. We were worried they had damaged our clock or something and that was why they could never "find it." Surprise, surprise, after offering to just come get it, they had it repaired about 2 days later. Which also makes me wonder if in the end they put about an hour of repair into it after having it for over a year. And we paid a LOT for that one hour. The clock is improved, only mildly, it is not great. It came with a 1 year guarantee, but I would never take it back to them. The timing is off. It kept perfect time for 30 years. I took it in because of a winding issue. When I got it back it was gaining about 5 minutes a day. I have been working on it myself for about 5 months now and I have gotten the timing back to where it only gains about 5 minutes a month, but it never needed to be adjusted in 30 years. Steve is a nice guy, based on our phone calls over the year he had our clock, it appears they are having a lot of health issues and things that easily could be causing the severe delays in getting to their repairs. But I say, if you like your clock and want it fixed correctly and returned in a decent amount of time, take it somewhere else. read more
