A great place for an indoor activity especially during the cold winter. I've been here for three times over the four years and I've enjoyed it. They have even expanded their studio space now and it is so much bigger. You can walk in (I think) but will be better if you book ahead. Once you choose they have a downstairs area where you can start paint. They have a large array of colors and tools to make your decisions. While we painted, there was a QR which lead to a link on instructions. Had great music playing while we were painting. Overall, I had a great experience and highly recommend. A great idea if you're looking for something fun to do, want to get a little creative (or keep it simple), and make great memories! Spent my Sunday afternoon painting away for the first time this past weekend! The whole process was easy with a huge selection of ceramics to choose from. My sisters and I first made a reservation online, which you have to pay for. When you get there, you have to pay for the ceramic pieces that you want to paint, and the price varies depending on what you get. After picking your pieces, you wait and have a staff bring you to your table. I ended up getting a mug and two small bowls, but it was really hard to narrow down my choices. I guess this gives me an excuse to come back here to paint more! The duration of our reservation was 2 hours, however, the staff let us stay longer to complete our paintings, which was so kind of them to do. 2 hours is definitely not enough time, but I appreciate them for being so accommodating. If I lived close to here, I would be here all the time just to get my creativity fix and paint pieces that I would love to have at my house. And that is another reason why I love Clayroom - the ceramic pieces they offer are so versatile and will be utilized instead of it being a paperweight. It was a super easy experience - you pick the piece you want to paint, and you go and grab the paints you want to use. I am a big fan of painting pottery and was searching for a spot in Brookline to visit for my birthday. I figured a few hours of painting some pottery would be a relaxing way to spend my birthday. After doing my research, I settled on "The Clayroom". We headed over in the early afternoon on a Wednesday and the place was PACKED. I won't lie, it wasn't as relaxing as I had hoped. This was due to the total disorganization in the way the place is run. They literally had a high school / college kid responsible to run the entire place. To be fair, it wasn't the kid's fault. He did his best. However, the process is totally broken compared to other places I have been to paint pottery. Typically, they will get you the paint, brushes, and anything you need. Here, you have to scan a QR code to watch a video. Then, you have to go pick out the colors and fill a color palate/tray. Once you do that, you'll have to sift thru the pile of brushes that are clearly past their prime and should be replaced. It's hard to get crisp lines with brushes that are worn. The quality of the paint isn't up to snuff, in my view. In their video, they'll instruct you to paint it three times. (three coats) They instruct you to use a provided hairdryer between each coat. In my view, it's inferior paint. I have never had to apply multiple coats or use a hair dryer on pottery. I had come in hoping to paint a set of bowls for my German Shepherd. Sadly, they were out of anything that really interested me. I have plenty of plates, cups, and bowls from past pottery projects. The only thing that really caught my eye was the water pipes. They had a few styles to pick from and I settled on that. I typically like pottery that I can use. It comes with the down-stem and glass bowl. I paid around $50 for the unpainted water pipe. Studio time is offered in two-hour increments and you can pay ahead of time to secure your reservation. You will need a reservation. The entire process needs to be thought through and instituted in a better manner. The studio was just crowded, hot, and they were out of A LOT of different pottery pieces. You'll notice this when you look at the racks of finished projects. They also lacked any stamps or stencils, which is standard at most pottery studios. I will say they do allow you to come back to finish a project WITHOUT charging studio time. Also, the cost of the unpainted pottery includes the cost of being fired in the kiln. The studio was just way too crowded and the paint station was a total disorganized mess. I'm not surprised, one person cannot run the entire place on their own. It was also incredibly hot inside. If they could revamp their process, use higher quality paints, and staff up they'd have earned a higher rating. It was only relaxing once the place cleared out a bit. For full disclosure, many of the unpainted pieces have a stamp of "China" on the bottom. To me, that shows a lack of attention to quality. For the price, the quality of the pottery and materials should be much better. I will certainly come back to finish my piece and see if things go differently. I was just blown away by how disorganized and broken the entire process and experience was. read more

My friend and her son treated me and my son here a month or so ago. We had the best time! You sign up for a 2 hour slot. Each party is seated separately. All tables are socially distanced. There are lots of pieces available for painting. You select your piece and then you select your paint. The art master in charge will help you get your paints and you select your brushes. The paint is thin so you need 3-5 coats. You can get as much paint as you need. For us we did one hour helping our kids (they are seven) and then we painted the last hour. The paint looks really faint even with lots of coats. You dry each layer with hair dryers. I was surprised with how vibrant it looks after being fired up! My son loves his piggy bank and I love my mug. Yes I painted the flowers. Yes it looks like a 7 trae old did it, not a 37 year old but that's ok! Can't wait to come back! read more

We could hear them provide an explanation to the other party in another room but they didn't bother to come back to us. When we had finished, I didn't realize I was overcharged until I had left. We had been charged the studio fee again despite us already paying for it through an online reservation. In the future, it would be best if they double checked if a reservation was made and/or go over the breakdown of our bill. I was refunded for the studio fee after explaining my situation. read more

Everything is so reasonably priced! There are so many adorable pieces to chose from. My home decor is turning into all things I painted here. My friend even made a dainty chip and dip bowl for her mom for Mother's Day and it looks so professional but it's made with love instead of store bought. The prices here are quite reasonable and the turnaround time is great (pieces will be done 3-5 days after your visit). I haven't tried their throwing class yet so this is mainly a review of their pottery painting. As a heads-up, the owner and employees do not wear masks and do not strictly enforce mask-wearing-- while the tables are somewhat spaced apart, it is hard to socially distance in a lot of the common areas. Keep this in mind if you are COVID-cautious. I highly recommend making a reservation online especially if you plan to visit on a weekend or Friday evening. Reservations are $10/person with something around a $1 processing fee. Reservations are for 2 hours but I've been here twice so far and I haven't witnessed them kicking people out. They do let you come back and finish your pieces another day. The clay pieces range from $4-20+ (a 3 inch x 3 inch tile is $4), but I would say most pieces are in the $12-20 range. They have a bunch of items like mugs, bowls, plates, piggy banks, animal figures, vases, and a couple Star Wars-themed pieces. You end up paying the reservation fee and whatever piece(s) you choose to paint, so I think $20-30/session is typical. They let you use any of their paints and any of their tools (paintbrushes, sponges, tape, pencils, squirt bottles for detailing). I painted a pasta bowl ($17) and it took me about 2 hours. The employees were friendly and helpful with our questions. A lot of guests bring their own drinks, since the paint is washable and non-toxic. The fired pieces are food, dishwasher, and microwave safe. This place is super fun for family, friends, a date, or even to paint alone! read more

We decided to take a pottery class to learn how to throw and make our own bowl for my birthday. I was nervous but our instructor was very informative and hands on. He crammed a lot of information into a two hour session, which was impressive. It make me want to seriously consider taking more lessons and make this a hobby. He also fixed any mistakes we had, so we didn't have a broken, wonky, weird bowl. I almost wish some of our quirks didn't get smoothed out, as my bfs bowl was taller at first, but was smoothed out and looked more traditional. Sometimes the quirks are what make it special so he was bummed they were worked out. But I highly recommend this class to anyone who is interested in learning, you'll get a lot out of this class! Now our experience for painting and being in the space was....not what I expected. It was cramped, loud and disorganized. In all honestly, this is not the place I would not recommend for a "girls night" or a large group. I did like the YouTube videos we could watch for different techniques and ideas, but trying to get a person working there to help us was pretty difficult. Now where this review went from 4 stars to 3 stars is when we came to pick up our items. We arrived and let them know they date of our paint so they knew where to look for our pieces. Mine was easy to find, but my bfs piece was lost. They looked top to bottom on the shelves and couldn't find it. And these young girls clearly had NO idea what to do. I imagine they dont lose pieces very often, and since we paid a money to handmade our items and paint them, its not as simple as just giving us another to paint and pick up. They were fumbling around, avoiding our gaze, trying to get a hold of the owner to ask him what to do. One tried to suggest that we probably already picked up our bowls, but I assured her we hadn't. While the two girls at the front were scrambling, I asked a different person if I could look for the piece myself. They were hesitant to let me, but I got the go ahead. I was able to find it within a couple minutes. Once we found it, they hung up the phone, bagged our pieces and sent us off. It was just such a disorganized mess, I was not a fan. The pieces they have pre-made look really nice so I would MAYBE give this another try if a friend wanted to go and paint pottery. But the space is tight, small, and loud.
