The employees showed us around and made sure we knew where everything was and how to paint our pottery. There was a wide range of items to paint, so there's something for everyone's interests and budget. There was also a wide range of colors and paint brushes. I've done pottery painting a few times and I typically feel a little let down when I get the finished piece back... but not this time! We're in the area for the summer so we've been looking for things to do. We were so glad we found this place! Everyone was very friendly. The woman that assisted us was super thorough and helpful. She gave us tips and recommendations and explained everything perfectly, she even saved my daughter's piece when she "ruined" it (she needs a promotion lol). We tried the clay painting & there was a wide variety of ready made pottery pieces to choose from. I chose a mermaid mug, my daughter chose a cute character mug and my son chose a cute trophy vase/mug? There were tons of paint colors to choose from as well as all the painting accessories (brushes, stencils, sponges, etc). We were reminded that we can't take the pieces home right away since they'll have to go in the kiln but they'll call/text in 7-10 days for pickup. The studio was very clean, organized and spacious. It was also very affordable, they charge $5 per person for the first hour and then $2.50 each additional hour per person and you just buy the ceramic pieces that range from $20 and up. My daughter, myself and my two nieces went on a Friday evening. We had so much fun ! You can bring alcohol if you would like to. We brought wine, next time we will bring some snacks also. Staff was friendly and explained the process to us. We picked out our project and proceeded to paint laugh and enjoy each other's company. Highly recommend ! The gals here explain everything to you: CHOOSE the thing you want to paint CHOOSE your paint colors: big paint bottles for larger pieces, medium paint bottles to take back to your table, grab a squeeze of different colors or grab a "dot" bottle (makes perfectly symmetrical dots on your piece!) CHOOSE your art accessories: brushes of all different sizes, sponges, stencils, etc. THEN GET ARTSY! I saw some people getting really overwhelmed because there ARE a lot of choices to make. I took my 20 yr old, 17 yr old, and 14 yr old nieces and nephew in, on a whim. We recently moved to Beverly and they were visiting for the weekend. In a time when kids their ages are GLUED to electronics, I don't think I've ever seen them so focused on one thing before. The staff was friendly and communicated all the policies well, before we started, so there was no surprises when checkout time came. We were looking for a place to hang out and be creative. Our old pottery place closed a few years ago and this location was wonderful. The employees were very helpful and they were more than willing to assist as needed. The pieces are ready one week after your visit which is a very fair turn around time. I'm soooo disappointed with this place!! I was looking forward to taking my one-year old in to make some Mother's Day gifts for both her grandmothers and her Aunts and was turned away!! For those of you with little ones, you know how difficult it can be to get your little one, rested, fed, in and out of a car seat, and such an event is a true production. I had geared her up by making sure she napped and was fed and ready to go and was looking forward to the event and was excited about surprising all the important women in our life with these most memorable gifts! I was thinking something along the lines of footprints or handprints. When I came in I asked for suggestions and was ready to start the artwork. Instead of being helpful, She proceeded to tell me all about how short a one-year-old attention span is and how this probably wasn't the best idea and if I was going to do this, I would need to come in separately and prep the pottery. She told me they were too busy to accommodate this and to come back during the week if i still wanted to do this. My then-boyfriend and I stopped in for an impromptu pottery date here. Pros: - Plenty of ceramic pieces to paint. - They give you a little coaching and then let you just have at it. I was glad to have someone able to help on hand, but also loved that I didn't feel like they were babysitting us. - SO well-priced. - The pottery that the craftfolk have made themselves is gorgeous and distinctive. - It's fun being able to see the whole pottery and glazing process going on in the other room. - Prompt turn-around time for firing the mugs we'd made. - Lots of age ranges in the room as we painted, and everyone was having fun. The environment felt controlled but relaxed. Cons: - I wished they had a few more colors, but mixing them on my own was fun, so it's not a total con. I was SO excited to get a gift certificate to Clay Dreaming from my father-in-law for Christmas. I've been to several different paint your own pottery places over the years, and I have to say Clay Dreaming is definitely the best place I've been. The studio is big with several different connecting rooms. (My husband who grew up in Beverly told me this space was formerly the DMV!) Even on a busy day around the holidays there was a table for two with no wait. They have a nice selection of pottery pieces and the prices are very reasonable. I really like that they have painted pieces all around for inspiration! When we came in the woman walked us through where to grab our pottery pieces, our paints, and any stencils or stamps we wanted. There was a great selection of colors and tools. I really appreciated that they have puffy paint pens which make writing and fine details so much easier! After the quick walk through we were set up with an assortment of brushes and water, and got more directions. I really liked the independence they give the customers. They keep the place very clean and well organized, but also let their customers have the freedom to walk around and pick out their own items as needed. In my experience all of the staff were very friendly, and it was a busy day with lots of families and couples. My only complaint would be that the painters fee is charged by the hour. It still isn't very much, but it could make you feel a bit rushed. We decided to stay for 2 hours which was a good amount of time to finish a piece with enough coats of everything and decoration. I highly recommend the pottery painting here at Clay Dreaming as a date night or family activity. I will be back next time I am in town! read more

I can not think of a better place to bring my 6 year old. This studio has a paint your own pottery room. My daughter loves to paint and do crafts. After the pottery is fired you have a great keepsake. We have given these masterpieces as gifts for every occasion. This studio offers a birthday package, so much better than the old jumpy places. Clay Dreaming Pottery Studio is a Plaster Fun Time for adults (and well-behaved kids). Somehow it manages to be exceptionally clean (imagine that!) and it's laid out in such a way that you don't feel like you're tripping over other people passing back and forth while switching your paints. I really loved being able to see all the displayed pieces other people (presumably) painted. Plus, the music in the background was really chill - an hour or two here was the most relaxing entertainment I've had in a month! Initially I was kind of surprised by the prices - you pay per item, and each has a price marked on the bottom. But considering you get to customize it *and* keep it for yourself afterwards, it works out being pretty fair. You're paying for the item, the tools, and the experience, and the experience is tons of fun! read more

Last night a group of 6 of us went in for a girls night out. We had a reservation. No one greeted us or gave us direction. We were all on our own. We enjoyed our options of pieces and wound up painting one or two pieces each. With that being said, we spent a lot of money. Since we were having a good time we did not pay attention to the time. This older women came out of no where and rudely yelled at us that we were over our time. If the women had been nice I would have stayed and cleaned up my mess. She also charged us for being there over our time which I understand but didn't say anything she just put it in there. I have to say I won't be back. read more

I came last tues with a friend and had a wonderful time. The women at the front desk was extremely nice and helpful. So I scheduled a little girls night for this Friday We made a reservation and aside from me visiting once no one else had ever been there. No one helped us or explained to anyone what should be done. After an hour of me painting my plate the girl walked over and told me if it was to be used with food the entire plate needed to be painted. Something that would have been helpful in the beginning. Now it was impossible for me to do. At 9:00 the very timid young lady at the front desk came over and said I don't know if your aware but it's 9:00 and we close. So we started finishing up. At 9:10 a very rude women came from the back and said excuse me its 9:10 we are closed and you need to leave The table next to us also had 6 women who were painting as well. I understand that you were closing but we had well over $350 worth of painted pottery sitting on the table. Plus the table of 6 women sitting next to us. I can't imagine 10 min was worth losing all this business over mind you she charged us $2.50 for the extra time we were each there. Fine not a big deal. It's the rudeness that I will never be back again. It's a very adorable place and I love the idea but I was excited to bring my family and was not happy with how we were treated. read more

Not the greatest:( I took my five grandchildren here recently (Ages 5 to 10 years old) and I felt I was not wanted at all! Very little personal attention was given and the woman who was helping us seemed annoyed we were there. This definitely did not seem "child friendly". I couldn't wait to leave. read more

The gallery has reasonable and amazing work, mostly by owner/artist Tracie diAngelo, the painting area is cheerful, welcoming, clean and well organized, plus has great pottery choices and inspiring examples at hand. But the wet clay area is my fav: lots of open studio time,, helpful clay folk, great tools and supplies to use and an amazing glaze selection. I've taken classes, done workshops, and love to use the very available open studio time to practice. Don't limit yourself and loved ones to the painting area..try the wet clay classes! read more

I've had a wonderful time here. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 because they are less hands-on with beginners than some other places I have been. The overview at the beginning is a little bare-bones. Help is readily available and pleasant if you ask, BUT you have to hunt someone down and ask. Since I'm experienced and an introvert, that's fine with me; but I've seen others feel a little lost with even knowing what questions to ask. I do love that the timeframe for picking up fired pieces is quicker/more reliable than other places I've been to. (This is for the painting studio; have not used the clay construction studio.) The Dunkin' Donuts next door is always a plus for those spending a long time! read more

I haven't been here for a few months now but I always want to go back. Just thinking about it gets my creative juices flowing. Though it takes me forever to decide which piece to do I am always satisfied with the result. I love how there is no wrong way yo do a piece and the staff here are so nice. You are more than welcome to bring in food and alcohol, in fact its encouraged if your having a group date or one on one with a partner or friend. They have so many pieces and though colors are somewhat limited, its more colors than your typical paint set. I feel like there could be more tables but for the space its actually perfect. I've been painting here since just about day one of the shop. Its a great atmosphere. The music they play is very relaxing. The staff is very knowledgeable about the process of firing the pieces and how the underglazes will show up, etc. There are many pieces to chose from for adults and children alike. Every season and holiday brings new pieces. The staff works well with children and is always willing to lend a hand if someone needs help with a technique. I've seen many parents come in and the staff helps them put their infant's hand or foot print on a piece. It's beautiful. As far as classes go, I cant say anything but how amazing the teachers are. I went in early for my first session, because I had missed the first class, and the teacher took his free time to catch me up on the wheel. I actually completed a piece before everyone else showed up! This place is a must go! Birthday parties, vacations, holidays, lazy days, rainy days, any day! Give it a shot! You'll be hooked! This is a fantastic studio! I have been using the wet clay studio for a month and have also painted my own pottery with my 3 year old. Everyone at the studio is really nice, incredibly hard-working and very helpful. The studio is very clean, which can be challenging to do in a wet Clay studio. The tools are great - well organized and everything you can imagine is available for use - basic clay tools as well as stamps, molds & a lot of other fun tools. There is a wonderful community of skilled ceramicists to chat with and often share great ideas and advice. Painting pottery with my son was a blast too - he loved it and his plate looks amazing! The Clay Dreaming Studio is a great place to make pottery. The new facility on Cabot street is terrific, a big up-grade from the original site in the Redbrick building. (If you haven't seen the new space you should.) I started as a student and shifted to independent study. I've been involved in the studio for a while now. I used the Redbrick clay studio before Tracie took over and improved the business. It is now much much better because of her efforts. So, what are the things that I like? 1) The studio is well run and that has encouraged people to join and stick around. There's a solid crowd of experienced potters who are willing to share ideas. This generates feedback, new ideas and creativity. 2) The new Cabot street space is large and well laid out. The equipment and reading material are good. 3) Students can use the studio between classes. I think this is high value. Being able to get in a couple times a week lets me learn more than 2 times as fast. Throwing is a physical skill that needs practice to build "muscle memory". Some other studios do not provide this option and the learning curve is slower. 4) The studio works with red and white stoneware. There's a dozen glazes with a terrific wall of samples (12 X 12 overlays, fired standing, not flat, with texture.) We also have a good set of slips and oxides to work with. This is all electric kiln firing (limited by the down-town location.) I've found there to be plenty of options to explore with this attractive glaze set. 5) The gallery space out front provides another source of inspiration. All in all I find this a great place to work. read more

Absolutely loved our time here! My daughter had gone with her grandmother once before and brought me home a beautiful piece. We went together today and the atmosphere couldn't have been more welcoming. Clean, spacious, tons of quality pieces to paint, helpful people.... Relaxing and fun at the same time!
