Came here for my friend's birthday and had so much fun! We did the wine and charcuterie Taylor Swift night and got to paint our own pieces. The vibes were fun and energetic, the two owners were extremely engaging and encouraging everyone to dance and sing karaoke. They were also super helpful and patient with getting us all organized with our stations, even when the store became busy. I'll also note that while they promote LGBTQIA and women empowerment, tonight I saw both the owner and her son DUCT TAPING 'god bless Charlie Kirk' etc signs on the trees of newbury street. Of note! Don't usually write reviews, but needed a place to share our experience visiting this pottery painting studio on our trip to Boston. It looked like such a cute place at first. Never thought this business was like this... I see from the reviews here many others had a similar experience. There are two main points which bothered me the most: 1. This is a hostile working environment for the staff. We overheard the store owner complaining about her staff to her daughter.. I understand that this is a family business, but we were not comfortable with employees being treated this way. Owner made inappropriate accusations against staff and customers while we were there. It's clear from watching how staff are treated (yelled at, rushed, and not respected) that this place doesn't care about people, only profit. Especially with how insane the prices here were.. 2. The owner throws Pride events while openly supporting anti-LGBTQ+ politicians, which just feels exploitative. All the rainbows in the studio branding made us think this would be a safe space for queer people. Unfortunately, we heard a political comment from the owner that made us uncomfortable while we were there. We later found this shop on instagram and were shocked by the accounts they follow. I will add a screenshot. I hate to make this political, but the branding of this studio made us think we were supporting a progressive small business. We spent so much money here and it is crushing that our money went to people who think our community shouldn't have rights.. You're entitled to your political views, but don't pretend to support the LGBTQ+ community just to profit off us. I have never had such a negative customer service experience in my entire life. When we arrived, we were told by a sales associate that the total price of the experience was $38. After spending just 40 minutes painting, my 2 friends and I were charged over $300. I was visiting the studio with friends, and although we all arrived at separate times and inquired about the price separately (four times!) none of us were told about the studio fee and it was not visibly posted in the studio. We were told our pieces would be ready for pick up within one week and that we would be texted when they were ready. None of us received any texts for three weeks. When I called three weeks later, the owner told me she had been in text communication with me for weeks, and that I was planning on picking it up this morning. I never received any communication, and for all I knew, my piece had been lost. When I told her that I had not received any communication, she proceeded to scream at me over the phone about how Zendaya visited the studio and that she was a multimillionaire. I came here very excited for my birthday and my boyfriend prepaid and made an appointment before we arrived. Everything was great until the owner started having a personal staff meeting in the same area we were painting in. She spent the 2 hours we were there berating some poor young college student that she employs. She was so nasty to this girl for so long and I was so uncomfortable that I shed a silent tear on her behalf. I have never heard someone be so terrible to another human being. When the girl left, I briefly stood up and silently followed her out to catch her in the street and tell her that it was an unfair way to be treated. That no one should speak to anyone like that. The owner then followed me out, told me I wasn't welcome back in, I couldn't finish my mug I had prepaid for (even though I never said anything to this woman, her staff, or any other customers). At this point I am sobbing in the street waiting for my boyfriend to come out with our things. She came back out, her other family member/staff took their phone out and recorded me sobbing "how are you so mean?" To which she mocked me, and went back inside. She was under the impression that I was upset about her political comments, things like "get the illegals out of here", and told my boyfriend she was kicking us out because "trump is our president". I was upset because she was berating a young girl for hours as I tried to sit and paint and enjoy my birthday. I am 100% certain that's it's illegal to kick someone out of their store after they already paid for services for whatever political views she thought that I had. Why this unhinged woman thought she could deduce my political opinions from a single silent tear dripping down my face is beyond me. But I felt unsafe, uncomfortable, and appalled by this woman's behavior. This is America you can't assume you know someone's political views and then steal their money because you don't like what they think. And beyond that, it had nothing to do with politics and everything to do with how she was treating someone younger, in a vulnerable position, in the presence of her customers no less. This is a "family" business and I was SO excited to support them every time I bought from them. I'm driving from something that was supposed to be a wonderful birthday experience to the police department to file a report. You don't treat people this way. Apparently the saga continues as this woman has now been texting my boyfriend who made the appointment calling me ugly, a prostitute, continued to mock me crying, and making vague threats because of this review which is quite literally just the facts of what happened. It's super interesting that a refund was only on the table after I posted a review. And not that it matters. But I attached a picture of my outfit just to prove how modest and appropriate for any business it was. We were not the problem here and no one else leaving these CRAZY reviews is either. She clearly doctors google review listings, makes a habit of stealing from people, bullying them, and is clearly going through something she takes out on the world. Visiting from out of town, I already expected some inflated Boston prices but over $500 for 2 mugs and 3 ornaments is OUTRAGEOUS. I have to assume there was some hidden fees added because we were literally two gorgeous girls and the owner was a karen because I have no idea why else it would be that expensive. during our one hour visit the owner sat there near us and was continuously rude to her workers, and paid us no attention. when we ran out of paint and needed more another patron had to provide it for us not a single worker helped us. also the owner has 2 big dogs in there with her??? weird. the way the owner was talking to the employees was crazy but even crazier was the way she talked about them when they walked away!! read more

WILL NEVER RETURN! CREEPY STAFF AND GAUGING PRICES. My friend and I went here on July 4th. Immediately uneasy about being the only ones in the studio. Drew (who managed to get worse as time went by) offered us tequila shots in the back room - I obliged (I am underage) but was not carded as he literally poured Casa Migos into plastic cups. He had spoken of a wine night the studio did so I thought it was legit. He was very pushy and insisted we take more (we did not). We sat down to paint and he asks us if we are dating, we say no and he point blanks asks, "Oh, well have you experimented with each other?" Who in their right mind asks that of two strangers!! This is when we realize he is completely drunk! He then goes on to say "Well, I am a photographer and I don't normally do OnlyFans but for you two I would" and asked if we would be interested. So incredibly disrespectful and disgusting. He continued to make dirty remarks and was insistent on photographing us, which we had to constantly decline. He kept asking us if we were having fun and asked us to come party with him that night (which we declined). He was insistent that we meet up with him that night. Overall, I would never ever return and the Better Business Bureau should shut them down for the scamming and price gauging they take part in. I hope this place shuts down! ***UPDATE** After phone calls and texts, the owner assured me that he had been fired after this experience. She put me into a GROUPCHAT with him to fire him! (If it was actually him, no idea, but WHO DOES THAT). This was in July 2023. Today in August 2024, we walked by and who was outside! Drew! After promising to have fired him, he's back! We immediately felt that this was such gross negligence by the owner. An employee who sexually harassed young women, offered minors alcohol and was blackout drunk should not be working somewhere geared towards CHILDREN. I would have kept this review down, as per the owners request after confirmation of his termination, but seeing him outside and around young women and children it did not sit right with us to leave it up. read more

My daughter and her three friends went to this store to share to experience and create pottery. They were only told about the price of the actual item they were making. They were never told about a sitting or studio fee until it was too late. Apparently this is a common practice with this store. This is a complete scam and should be investigated. I strongly recommend that everyone stay away from this crooked place who are in the business of unfairly, taking money from people and not telling them about extra charges until it's too late. This is a bad business practice and not a store with customer service. The ridiculous price was paid, and she would be told when her item was ready. She was never told. Three weeks later, when she called to find out what happened, she was yelled at by the owner or manager of the store. I am not one to typically write reviews but the experience my friend and I had last week at Rainbows Pottery Studio was enough to prompt me to do so. From the start, the energy was off. We were placed at a tiny table while nearly the whole studio was available besides two other patrons. The table we were seated at was directly next to where the owner was seated with what seemed to be her family lawyer. The first 30-40 minutes of our painting session was us listening to the owner discuss personal matters with this other woman (ie obtaining life insurance for people, making phone calls to people to get their social security numbers, etc) - matters that really should be discussed in her personal office. Beside that weird meeting or whatever was happening, there was absolutely 0 direction to be had once we were seated at our table. Someone quickly said to us "pick your pieces and paint colors" and that was that. There were no prices on any of the pieces we were picking which I found odd. The paint colors were on these tiny squares that you needed to dig through in a vase in order to find what you wanted - a color wall is a lot more user friendly in my opinion. At other places I have gone, there have been instructional videos on best practice for pottery painting (such as using 3 coats, blow drying between each coat etc). I did these things because I have been pottery painting before but I'm not even sure if these paints required this because again, no instructions were given and hardly anyone asked if we needed help until the very end. I also didn't feel comfortable asking any questions solely based on the demeanor of the studio owner. In regards to her attitude/demeanor, I was shocked. She openly was bad mouthing one of her employees in front of us to her daughter. I am not sure if she thought we were out of ear shot or what, but the man she was speaking poorly of seemed to be the only one working yet she was saying how frustrating it is having employees who don't want to work? There is a table of finished pottery they leave outside for sale which he was responsible for watching over. Multiple times while he was trying to bring us our paint colors, he was interrupted because he needed to walk outside to make sure people weren't stealing off the table. This delayed my friend from starting her piece. Mind you, her daughter was sitting at a window seat where she could keep an eye on the pottery. A while after this when the man wasn't in the studio she was mumbling (but not actually) to her daughter, "he better be out there watching that table or I am going to kill him!" If there is such a concern with people stealing pottery, the pieces probably shouldn't be left out if there is not someone to man the table and another person to be inside helping customers. The studio also runs a small business of holding people's luggage for them, and every person came in to pick up luggage - this one employee was responsible for that. He was even responsible for going to pick up the pizzas for a birthday party that later came in. Another employee walked around with some paint on his shoe, and she clearly was pissed off about it when she realized he was tracking paint. But you own a paint studio... be understanding that things might get messy at times. The owners anger and frustration toward her employees quickly subsided when she had a birthday party of young children come in with parents she knew. You could immediately tell she was trying to impress them because she all of a sudden was bubbly and kind, a complete change in attitude and her first time approaching our table in our almost 2 hours of being in her studio. All of this to say, our experience was insanely bizarre and ended with a HEFTY price tag, sticker shock to say the least. My friends simple plate came to $123 while my bowl came to $93. There is a $54 per person studio fee which we weren't told until the end about. When we inquired briefly about it, she then decided to tell us the studio fee would cover as many pieces as we wanted. Isn't that something you should tell people in the beginning? Also a $54 fee to not have supplies other than paint brushes is highway robbery (no sponges, no painters tape, no stencils etc). Other places I have gone are very transparent with their studio fees before you begin. I will say, the studio fee is on her website but we didn't look at the website prior to walking in. If we did, I 100% would have chosen a more affordable studio and we likely would have walked away with a better experience read more

It has such cozy vibes and everything you will need for a seamless experience. The pottery itself is great quality and you will not be disappointed when you pick up your piece! Stopped in to take a peek quickly with my daughter. Bought a friendship bracelet made by a teenager and two tiny crocheted trinkets. He packaged them nicely in a bag and swung the iPad around and it was $133!!! INSANE AND PREDATORY. I would've guessed we were looking at, maybe, $30 for city pricing. There was no pricing visible. The guy running the place takes a while to get around to them. Then he says, "We're an hour behind. Can you come back in an hour and a half?" When they ask what options they have, since he cannot honor the agreement they paid for, he says "Oh sure you can cancel; you just forfeit your payment." And he offers this "forfeit" option, which my family was unaware of upon paying online (presumably it's buried in fine print) with that faux helpful tone. (Subtitles under his expression might read "I've got you now, sucker.") It was all spoken truly, as if they should be grateful that they can always simply lose the money. Gem on Newbury St. Come for the art and stay for the beautiful atmosphere. Rainbows is welcoming and happy. The staff is helpful and friendly and the owner brought out my daughter's creativity and her inner artist like no other experience I've ever seen. Your service. Was visiting boston and my 6 year old sister wanted to go look inside and she turned around and knocked over a piece of pottery. We go inside to pay for the item, the employee who was working there had little to no remorse about the situation. The piece of pottery ended up being in a two piece set that was 90 dollars. We understood that we had to pay for the piece but be cautious when at this place because they have extremely expensive things sitting on the edges of tables outdoors. I do not recommend Rainbows Pottery Studio if you are looking for a nice piece of pottery, I have found that there is much better artwork for much cheaper at other stores. read more

I was extremely disappointed by this business. A friend and I tried to go on a Friday evening and booked a 9pm appointment. No one from the store contacted us to let us know that we could not come in at this time. We arrived at 9:05pm after attempting to call and let the store know we would be a few minutes late. Upon arrival, the one employee (an unsupervised minor) let us know that we could not keep our appointment as she needed to leave at 9:30pm. Had anyone picked up the phone, we would not have come and simply rescheduled. Because we were already there and had an appointment, the girl working was confused and called the owner for help. She put the owner on speaker and the owner berated my friend and I for not knowing that they do not offer their services past 9pm, despite offering appointments at 9pm and later. She contradicted herself by saying that we could have had an appointment from 9-10pm if we had shown up on time, but then said we couldn't have stayed until 10pm because the employee needed to leave at 9:30pm. Because our experience was so negative, we did not want to reschedule and asked for a refund instead. The owner refused the refund, as well as refusing to take accountability for not properly setting up her own booking system. Since that evening, the owner has contacted my friend via text to harass her about leaving a negative review, including calling her names. Something about a grown woman who owns a business texting a 21 year old college student and using phrases like "cray cray" does not sit well with me. read more

I thought long and hard about writing a negative review, but I decided that I have to warn people about this place because people are still falling for it. I made the mistake of not looking up this place before going, won't make that mistake again! The salesperson, Drew, was so overbearing and unprofessional. I went with my friend for a fun girls night, and he constantly kept butting into our conversations and hovering around us, practically ignoring the other groups inside. He wanted to close up early (didn't give a reason) and kicked us out 45 minutes early, we weren't even done! The worst part of this place is that they are so secretive and frankly shady with the pricing! They don't display the price of any of the ceramics and there is nothing online that advertises prices. When I asked Drew how much a certain mug was he responded that it was 3 unicorns. What??? It was $75 not including the price to paint, and me and my friend unknowingly had to shell out over $200 for a mug and a small heart shaped box. He kept trying to force add ons like wine and cheese and lipgloss (I bought the lipgloss because he made me feel so uncomfortable not purchasing anything extra, it was terrible). I don't know how he still works there because the Yelp reviews are filled with negative comments specifically about him! I have been to the store twice and it was a great experience both times. I found Drew to be a great representative of the store and the brand - he was patient, polite, and did a great job of highlighting the work of the studio. The first time in I purchased one of the pre-made MBTA mugs. I gave it as a gift and got rave reviews. On this visit Drew informed me of the opportunity to have a personalized product made. When I went back to inquire about this on a second visit, Drew was again knowledgable and gave me all the necessary information to connect with Allie. I'm now into the process of ordering some personalized mugs. I think this is a great store and encourage others to check it out. I also want to give kudos to Drew; it was based on the great experience the first time that resulted in my returning to the store and now planning to buy additional products. read more

Quick Summary: I think this studio can improve on their pricing, safety and professionalism, and communication. I would recommend other pottery studios over this one as you'll receive better service for lower prices. -------------------------------- The Details: PRICING - For me and my three family members to each paint a medium-sized piece, it cost over $500 total. Pricing regarding the pieces and studio fee was not shared until payment. Comparable studios in the area have much lower costs (such as The Clayroom in Brookline or Clayground in Worcester). SAFETY AND PROFESSIONALISM - While we were at the studio, Allie (the studio owner) and Drew (the studio manager) were unmasked though the City of Boston has a mask mandate. It is a very small space, and she let us know we didn't have to wear masks while inside. We chose to keep our masks on as there were other customers in this space. Allie and Drew continued to stay unmasked the entire time we were there. Allie was on a date while we were at the studio and also had a group of 10 friends come by the studio--all unmasked and she did not ask them to wear a mask though customers were present. COMMUNICATION - Communication wise, we were given a pick up date and told we needed to come on that day due to limited studio storage space. I showed up to pick up my pieces on the agreed upon date to find out they were not ready because another family's pieces needed to be prioritized due to travel plans (according to Drew). I was told to come back the next day. The next day I called to find our pieces were still not ready and I was given a conflicting excuse. Allie, the studio owner offered their "courier service" (her or Drew delivering the pieces for $45/piece) to help with delivery. For the next 3 days, Allie continued to push back the agreed upon delivery date at the end of each day and give varying excuses. I was never offered an apology throughout this entire experience. I gave Allie private feedback regarding the importance of consistent and proactive communication about delays to customers which Allie did not address. She later called me at 9pm one night and yelled at me saying how she "did not appreciate my feedback," was "tired of dealing with me," and stated how I called her a "liar" and that I am unwelcome to return to her business. I've attached the text I sent that she felt warranted this reaction. Though we would not have returned anyway, she banned me and my family (who she's never interacted with) from returning to her business. Paid close to $200 to paint one mug and have it mailed it me. When it didn't arrive for over a month, I was concerned that it was lost. Was relieved to get a call from the shop, who then told me it was returned to them, blamed me for not receiving it, and asked me to pay for shipping again. When I was confused at how I could be asked to pay more when I didn't know it was shipped at all, the manager claimed I was a horrible person for asking them to mail it again and that I lacked humanity. I had a wonderful experience until this. It's overpriced for the "experience" they told me, but getting belittled and charged again for something out of my control was not what I expected to be included in said "experience".
