Chubby Mullet Bar and Grill, 8685 US Hwy 1, Sebastian, FL 32976 3.5 Stars If this old curmudgeon can offer any advice to you young whippersnappers concerning working in the service industry, it is this, "If you are devoid of all personality or are prone to bad days, don't do it." I will always wonder why those who fall into these categories insist on being servers to the general public. Angie is our waitress today at Chubby Mullet Bar and Grill and while I tried earnestly to coax a smile from her, I failed miserably in my efforts. Despite her downcast disposition, I ponied up a 30% tip as she was on point. I put in an order for the Inlet Tacos with Mahi-Mahi and a Patty Melt. Awaiting Angie's return with our fare, we relaxed and enjoyed the beautiful views. One has to nod to the location, not that it matters in the review, but it is gorgeous down here. Before too long, Angie brought our order and after taking a few pictures, I settled into the job at hand. The Inlet Tacos are served in warmed tortillas filled with cabbage, manchego cheese, pico de gallo and a special house sauce. While I found the fish slightly above average, the special sauce is the highlight. It was complex and flavorful on the palate. The resulting piquancy was a delightful surprise to my taste buds and outweighed the average-tasting fish. The beans were tasty, though they lacked a "wow" factor to garner any special mention. It's all about the sauce. Moving on to the Patty Melt. This is the reason for the 1/2 Star that pushed this over the bar of average. The burger was cooked to perfection, juicy and agreeably seasoned. The accompanying side of fries, without doubt of the frozen variety, were deep fried to a model golden brown while keeping a tender inside. Whoever was slinging the slop today was on point. The Big Boy says, "There is nothing wrong here and while the views are spectacular, the food was only slightly above average and there is much better similar fare and views less than a mile away."

This is a hidden jewel of a place! The small, rustic restaurant is located in a marina (just north of Sabastian) overlooking the river. Super friendly staff and awesome laid back atmosphere with 70's music softly playing over the speakers. We fell in love with this place immediately. The meals we ordered were absolutely delicious and oh so fresh! The fried calamari was tender with a crispy coating. The fried cod was astonishingly good. So fresh and perfectly fried and served with their house made tarter sauce. The coleslaw was crunchy and the vinegar dressing was perfect. The Manhattan Clam chowder was so good, it felt like a perfect comfort food. We enjoyed this place so much that we made a point to return again on our way back from our travels.

Website advertising $2 Draft Beers during happy hour but charging $2.25 as of 8/5/22. Website needs to be updated.

I'm not sure where all the great reviews came from, and it was the reason we decided to make the drive over to give this place a try. Extremely disappointed in the service and the food. We sat outside to enjoy the relaxing view of the Indian River, though there were trash cans placed about 20 feet from the outdoor tables where the waitresses emptied the trash from the food tables. We each ordered a beer which took 20 minutes to be delivered to our table. It was not terribly busy, and there was no reason given for the lengthy delay. It was definitely not the coldest beer in town as another reviewer mentioned. It took our waitress another 15 or 20 minutes to come back to take our food orders. Food came another 30 minutes after that. Both the fried cod and mahi were rubbery tasting. The coleslaw was dry and bland. It's pretty bad when the best thing in front of you are the french fries which came out of a frozen bag. On their website draft beers are advertised for $2 during happy hour from 3pm to 7pm. When we received our bill, we were charged $2.25 a beer. When we questioned it, the waitress said that whoever does the upkeep on the website information must not be doing their job. She did not honor the $2 price that they currently have posted. Of course, the most amazing thing of all is that The Chubby Mullet doesn't serve mullet.... at all! Marking this spot off our list. Unless the service and food quality improves drastically, we won't be back.

A bowl of clam chowder - really good taste

Prices are very reasonable. The clam chowder was really good, as was my husbands chubby Mullet cod basket. Fries were also good. Happy hour offered beer and wine at $3.50 each. The only BIG disappointment was the side order of onion pedals. I was really craving some good onion rings so the pedals sounded perfect! They were so gross. They were frozen, thick breaded frozen crap. Looking at other food that came out, such as a salad with chicken, smoked fish dip and calamari looked good but hey, I didn't try those items

Lucy M.

Wow... My first impression was in getting pleasantly surprised. Don't let the outside appearance of the marina stop u from visiting. It's an indoor, air conditioned restaurant with a view of the water. The service was impressive. The menu has both seafood and land lubber selections. I ordered the fresh catch... A Mahi reuben. It was DELICIOUS . And yet AGAIN, I was impressed with the sandwich. So whoever is in the kitchen preparing these dishes, needs to be commended. The staff was incredibly attentive. I "WILL" be returning!

Manny C.

Great views and great people. This should be the tag line for this restaurant. The chubby mullet is located next to a shipyard and you can come and enjoy the scenic view and get a great seafood. Their menu has a vast variety of goodies and if you don't like seafood don't fret as they have burgers and wings to try as well. Stop by if you're in the area and Sunday's they have happy hour ALL DAY!

Daphne R.

I was in town for a weekend and my friend had suggested this place because of the Mahi Reuben and it did not disappoint! We also had some wings as an appetizer and those were delicious. The staff was super friendly and attentive. Highly recommend!

Went for lunch. Good sized portions. I had the shrimp basket - husband had the redfish basket. Both were delicious. Try the conch fritters. Great service!

Great food. Great service. Taco Tuesday is amazing. Simply loved the mahi tacos. The pico has just the right amount of warmth. The sweet potato fries were perfectly soft on the inside and crisp on the outside. We arrived at 3 when the taco special began. Very few people were there. So perfect for early dinner without a crowd. read more

One of the better boat access restaurants in the area. The smoked wings are amazeballs. They do have fresh seafood, and also have the typical frozen Florida stuff like Mahi, shrimp, conch fritters. Service is always solid. If you want decent food and service skip Captain Hiram's and Squid Lips and check out the Chubby Mullet. read more

EXTREMELY disappointed with the food, food portion and the service. This place may have had a good reputation at one time, but that time has come and gone. We had read mixed reviews on this place so it took us a while to actually try it, what a mistake!! My new favorite little joint for seafood!! We had the shrimp basket and grouper cheeks basket, both lightly fried but you can order them grilled, blackened instead! Shrimp were a good size and cooked perfectly! SAVE YOUR MONEY. EVERYTHING WAS FROZEN FISH I Made my self puke for fear of food poisoning. Only giving 1 star because I half to. My scallops tasted like gum off a telephone pole that has been chewed by 500 hundred other people. Got a grilled order and a fried ordered. The scallops were not fresh. Clearly frozen. We were trying to support a local business during covid19, but take u $$$ somewhere else. I cook 3 meals a day 7days a week and wanted a meal off. I regret this horribly. For $50 I could have made an amazing seafood buffet instead of eating scallop flavored gum. read more

Used to like going to this place They have a couple of "men" use that term loosely that need to talk way above everyone else have their conversation. When we asked for them to lower their voice they got ver nasty and rude. One said this is a bar , not supposed to be quiet, really I thought it was a Restaurant/Bar. Long story short because I could see trouble coming we asked for our checks that we hadn't even drank. Bartender said don't worry I'll take care of it. Nice of her however she basically was telling us to leave rather then tell them please lower their voice. I guess they patronize the establishment more than we DID. read more

This is the second time we have visited. The first time we went we shared the grouper fingers and fish dip as a snack. It was great. Fish was good a fair portion and the star was the fish dip I highly recommend the dip. Well, today we took some friends we had been sampling appetizers at a couple of other places down the coast. When we got there my wife asked if we could have the grouper finger basket without the fries or slaw. The girl asked and the cook said sure and the'ed put in a couple extra pieces of fish. Well when it came out there couldn't have been 4oz of grouper. AND it was $16.00. Never order the fresh catch but all ways order the fish dip. read more

The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because for lunch I think it is a little pricey and I was disappointed at the view. I was hoping to have a real good river view, but instead I saw a green fence and a big boat fork lift on the dock picking up and moving boats. I ordered the blackened shrimp basket with coleslaw. It was delicious. Just the right amount of spice and cooked perfectly. The slaw was very tasty as well. My husband got the fried shrimp basket and he also said it was cooked perfectly and delicious. Another complaint would be that there wasn't quite enough shrimp in the basket. I left hungry. Even though is was pretty good, I probably won't go back. The restaurant itself looks very nice and they did a good job with the décor, but not so good of a location. read more

We were regular customers fall and winter of 2016. Year round residents, we noticed a decrease in service and food quality. Out of this out of that... Forgetting blackening seasoning TWICE. First offense that pushed me to let management know was mani tacos that came out w three tiny CUBES of fish. Sent back. Left. Management left me a gift card to try again, $25. We went back and ordered the smoked tuna which I had raved about in October on their page. This time it came w a smear of tuna. It was sent back and came back minimally better. A couple shreds of lettuce. Not ahi, plain smoked (over smoked) or dry from being left out.....tons of hard inedible pieces. I was sick for two days. My boyfriend has my soup as well as his, no substitutes are offered even with food allergies. We won't be back. read more

Nancy, the bartender and proprietor, is the kind of host every small tavern dreams of. Warm, funny, and completely at ease, she makes newcomers feel like long‑time regulars while keeping the whole place running smoothly. The beer selection is far better than you would expect from a cozy local spot. There is a rotating craft lineup that rivals bigger bars, along with the classics and a surprisingly solid wine list. I don't usually read the reviews for breweries because I want to give an honest review based on my experience. But what drew me in is all the pictures of the draft board seemed out of focus and weirdly lit. I chalked that up to maybe not cleaning off the camera lense before taking the pictures, but what I found was quite the opposite. When I took my picure I also couldn't get a good shot. A little blurry and maybe slightly out if focus. And what I found is the place is fairly dark inside until your eyes get acclaimatted. And the way they have the menu board lit, there is a glare which makes all the photos of the beer menu board come out weird. I took multiple photos and finally settle on the best one, but it also wasn't great. So onto the review. It is small inside and has outiside seating. But what they lack in size, they make up in personality. Pareidolia is a little brewery with a big personality to match the name. Got to connect with the beertenders on duty Les and Kelly. Sorry guys if I misspelled your names, but you guys were awesome. I kept calling them Mel and Stacy, no reason why, but I did finally learn their names about the same time as I really started loving their wonderful beer. And another fun fact is their brewer is a lady. I am very partial to women who brew beer, because I feel like they do something a little extra that men don't. But that is a feeling or my own personal bias. So there is that. They have food here, but the food seemed more like an afterthought or a remnant of Covid where you had to have food at your brewery just to survive. We tried the Hawaiian flat bread. It was closer to frozen pizza with some extra toppings. But didn't come here to eat, and the beer was so great it over ruled any issues I might have had with the food. What a disappointment. For years before I moved to this area Blackfins was one of my favorite for…read morebreakfast and dinner. We moved to Melbourne Beach in Jan 2025 and still everything was good. Some changes in dishes we determined were just food costs cuts. This year my son and his family came and we had an early dinner. My 3 yr old granddaughter was excited to go to the shop that was usually by the hostess stand. It was relocated but now had nothing for children. The service was slow but we thought maybe it was busy since it was tourist season. The food was just fair. Last night was my birthday and of all the restaurants in town I chose Blackfins. What a mistake. Walking in was dangerously slick since they had flooding from earlier rain. We were sat in a small booth by the window. We had to walk out of the way since a dog that was a size of a horse was sprawled out on the floor. Our table was absolutely disgusting! It was dirty and sticky and the coasting of shellac had apparently gotten melted and was sticky and black. Even the seat was dirty and I ended up whipping away pieces of paper on my seat with my hands. Everything including my arms stuck to the table. It took awhile for a very young person with zero personality come to take our order. We gave him a drink and appetizer order. I was attempting to forget about how disgusting the table and the large dog was with the view. The drink that didn't have enough ice although I requested a tall glass with lots of ice arrived with the appetizer. It was good despite being served with greasy fried saltines. When I attempted to start eating a very large Woodstork was fishing on the rocks when the people with the large dog started throwing crackers at it..despite signs everywhere not to feed the birds. It then came up to the window and came too close for me to eat since it was eyeing our food. My husband sat still, told me to do so as well and was holding a knife should it attack. After 15 minutes it finally went away. Now our food was cold. We complained to the waiter but all he could offer was, "Thank you for telling me." No offer to relocate. Our main meals came. Both of our fish were way overcooked. Mine was dry and not edible. My husband's was dry but he didn't complain since my birthday dinner was basically ruined anyway. Forget the dessert I just wanted out of that dirty sticky area. So sad! I will have to find somewhere else to take me and my family.

As we waited under ten minutes for our meal, the wife was in awe of the choo choo train the circled the bar above our heads, a cool addition that goes a long way. Grilled Shrimp Skewers and NY Strip French Dip. OMG the shrimp were awesome with the crispy carrot wedges were a nice side. Drenched my NY Strip hoagie into the french dip since I love it soggy and it was perfectly flavored. The french fries were plentiful and seasoned well but not as crispy as I would like. The restaurant sits on the river but since it was late there was no view, but we were able to hear the live rock n' roll music coming from the stage at the Sandbar. The clean gender assigned bathroom was gorgeous with green ocean themed epoxy flooring, lizard skin walls and bamboo partitions. It was a WOW effect upon entry.

The waitress was nice. Our martinis were good. We ordered spinach and artichoke dip which seemed to be missing the spinach and artichoke, just thick cheese. The chips were super greasy. We also ordered garlic bread which was good, large pieces filled with cheese and garlic. For our entrees two of us ordered fish and chips. The crust was super greasy, the fish was white and tender and a very generous portion. It was so large I only ate one French fry. My son and his wife ordered a Cesar salad with chicken. The lettuce was wilted and the chicken dry and burnt. They only took a few bites. We sat outside which was pleasant except for the sun blaring. They offered to roll down a shade which was nice. I'm hoping they try some new items. I know all about food costs so keeping a one paged menu is good but there needs to be some healthier choices that aren't greasy and overdone. I understand their Sunday brunch is good but I've never experienced it. I'll drive into Vero for better food until the menu improves.

Malabar Mo's is known as our local biker bar the night's I was here I really didn't see any motorcycles or bikers or maybe I did and they're in regular street clothes. The food here does not stand out in any way it's pretty average but there's really nothing wrong with that at all. Is it cool local spot close to the river with local people who work and live in my town some of which I recognize and I've seen around. The service here is always good. The food comes out fast and it's very presentable. Nothing bad to say about this whatsoever. Now the alcohol is my biggest complaint. I simply ordered a vodka lemonade and I thought the drink was really strong but I didn't even get a buzz so ordered another one and thought it was really strong again and it wasn't. The next morning I realized from the headache I received but the drink wasn't straw but the vodka must have been below the well it was so low grade. The only other vodka that's ever given me a headache like that after two drinks is ABC house brand and Smirnoff. I'm not sure if it was Smirnoff but it did taste really strong for one ounce of alcohol mixed into a regular 8 oz cup so whatever it was it was undoubtedly cheap. Second time I came here I was up with a party of seven people. The waitress was able to handle our table without any issues. She checked in frequently and gave us regular updates on the kitchen and what was going on with the food and the staffing. Every employee I've contacted at this location has been friendly. I wouldn't necessarily call this location a date night restaurant but it's definitely safe for casual time. Let's just say it's not a first date location if you're looking for a romantic candlelit dinner with flowers on the table. If you're close by it's really not a bad spot to stop and have a drink I possibly need some local that's also a good spot to sip on your drink and listen to the crazy banter from a crazy Palm Bay residence at the bar. If you've been in town a long time these people will often tell a story to each other and you'll find yourself smiling and nod and remember the good old days out in da bay.

I'm not an alcoholic and didn't expect 2 loud mouthed intoxicated, heavy set women to invite themselves into my conversation at my table. I thought maybe they were donating their time? Every song they played sounded just like the last song. Since everyone was too bombed to aim properly in the bathroom, they certainly didn't notice. The key issue is no one here gets a limit on alcohol consumption. It's a DUI hot spot. The riffraff are obviously regulars here. The food is awfully overpriced for what you get, the water is even worse, and nowhere near a full menu to order from. Waitress looked overworked and do not smile. A horror show on weekends. I know it's not a classy place like you get downtown in Melbourne, but the owner should be responsible when serving alcohol without any limits and asking big mouths to shut up so others can enjoy a conversation at their table. I know for a fact two individuals who left this bar completely intoxicated and one lost a leg, and the other lost a foot riding home drunk on Malabar Rd. Ask any cop about it. My scenic view is the backside of a gas station. so we split and rode south, Rosie's has a a gorgeous view of the river for less money I dumped on this dive. She was not helpful with menu choices when asked but made us aware there was a new menu. This being our first time , we asked what she recommended she was not at all helpful stating "it depends what your appetite is" and said "the bowls were popular". My friends both got the clam chowder soup and said it was average. The redneck egg rolls were pretty tasty and came out fairly quickly once ordered. The location is right on the river and is nice for watching the water and boats. The ambiance is beachy and has cute decor. I ordered a burger and paid extra for fries as it comes with chips only -the fries were seasoned and delicious but the burger was just average-nothing I would return for. My friends got the mojo pork bowl that was pretty good and the other burger came with potato salad and was ok. The dog loved her chicken breast and ate the entire portion. Ichabod's Bar & Grille

**INITIAL REVIEW**…read more When it comes to the restaurants within Downtown Melbourne/Melbourne Main Street, I often stress that the ones on the edge of the river and/or marina are some of the best ones if you want a meal with a view. The Mansion and Chart House come to mind. The one my family wanted to go to was Ichabod's Bar & Grille. Unfortunately, its popularity exceeded its capacity and the waittime was over an hour. Ergo, we went to their sister location on Melbourne Beach, the one right across from Paradise Beach. Maybe, I was expecting a bit more as the Melbourne Beach location is the newer location meaning it had the OG to learn from, but it did not live up to that standard, at least the one I had in my head. Though an address is provided, this Ichabod's Bar & Grille - which I will shorthand simply to Ichabod's for the remainder of this review - is located as a stand-alone business right across the entrance to Paradise Beach. Ichabod's surely has that look of being a dockside restaurant despite being "landlocked," but good luck parking nearby. The parking situation has always been bad around the area. Inside, the seating is limited in which the majority of seating seems to be at the two bars. I guess Ichabod's is catering to a certain demographic pertaining to who dines inside. Outside, there are more tables for families and groups. That is where my family and I sat for our meal. Our waitress Jordanann, God bless her soul, was the only waitress working. She was running around like a chicken with their head cut off as she served everyone both inside and outside the restaurant. Despite her situation, she remained focused and kind. I definitely gave her a big tip for how hard she worked. As for the food, it was... well... okay. I always get fried fist fillets whenevere I come to a new seafood restaurant, along with crab cakes. There was shell in the crab cake, which I find to be a bit of a norm with a little piece, but there were some thoroughly recognizable pieces in my mouth when biting right in. And the fish, well... it was... okay. Not the best fish I ever had, but not bad where I would not finish it or at least take it home. Other food my family ordered includes the Mahi Sandwich, Our Burger, Shrimp Wrap, Caprese Burger, Jerk Mahi Plate, and the Jerk Shrimp Plate. Overall, the initial visit was very lacking. Though I do not fault the waitress herself, I do fault the restaurant for only having one waitress for this shift. I assume they are having a troublesome time keeping staff. I will definitely come back and give them a second chance. Can't just say Ichabod's is what they are over one visit, but for this initial visit, this is the kind of rating I would give them. If they improve over an average, i will reconsider changing the rating and updating the review.

That's a bold statement from a guy who's had fish tacos in Hawaii and Hong Kong and Puerto Vallarta - but I have to give credit where credit is due. I wanted to stop back again, but alas I was only in town on business for a few days, so it will have to wait until next time. I hope there is a next time! Stop in and try it out.
