I was anxious about having my dog spayed and was more than pleased with the care she was given at the Cheerful Vet. Dr. Heaslet and her staff were extremely caring and explained everything in detail through the process. I freaked out after we got home and called the office, they suggested I bring her back in, which I did and they checked her out and assured me she was okay. The worst ever !!! They were clipping Bubba's nails and cut one so short it was bleeding but instead of explaining what happened or tending the wound they just threw him back in the room with me ! Then I noticed blood dripping from his right paw. I asked the receptionist to come look at the blood and she said "What blood"?, so I pointed to it, told her I took pictures. I asked to speak to someone but not a single person would come talk to me. I asked the receptionist for a wound bandage she ignored me and keep answering the phones ! I was sooo mad ! I took Bubba to the car where the blood proceeded to get all over my seat, but I wasn't mad about that. I had to go down a few stores to the dollar general and get a bandage and do it myself. I filed a police report and called the State Veterinary Association. They were truly horrible! Hello ... We have an 8-year-old golden retriever named Kalua. Over the weekend, we discovered a "growth" under her right ear. Our vet was unavailable then, as well as on Monday. However, upon making a call to The Cheerful Vet early on Monday morning, the nice receptionist (Jessica) got us in for an afternoon appointment that very day. Dr. Anette Heaslett was professional, knowledgeable, understanding and gave us several options. We chose the option to drain the hematoma, which was taken care of with an hour. We were sent home with some ointment to use twice a day for 10 days. I am MOST THANKFUL to Dr. Heaslett and her terrific staff for making our Kalua feel SO much better, and that we got a same-day appointment (even though our pup was a new patient there). Definitely not cheerful: My recommendation is don't ever take your cat to this veterinarian.I had a very bad experience. My cat wasn't feeling well and he was nervous and scared. I could tell by the way they handled my cat that they did not have a real understanding of a cats sensibility. For acute care, fine. Chronic issues and disease diagnosis, not so much. Dr. Heaslet was our vet and we trusted and liked her. Until we sought out another opinion. Wow. She had put down everything that was wrong with our dogs to old age and arthritis. One had nearly all the signs of Cushing's Disease and she said he just had arthritis... he has Cushing's. Once diagnosed, we were able to get him back to nearly his old self through diet and supplements. It's been a year, and he's doing so much better. He went through years of panting and shaking needlessly. Our other dog she also said just had arthritis and had cataracts. He has Degenerative Myelopathy and is doing leaps better through diet, supplements, and hydrotherapy. He does not have cataracts but had an infection to his cornea which we are now, two years later, racing to try to improve before he goes blind. If she says how "stoic" dogs can be about pain and just wants to Rx gabapentin and NSAIDS, go to another vet. Thank goodness I wanted a better life for my dogs than a constant stream of painkillers (and ongoing tests to see if we'd destroyed his kidneys). After a huge bill for labs our cat received only anti nausea medicine and should have been started on a broad spectrum antibiotic. Took her to a different vet the next day and she has a severe UTI which if given antibiotics was totally treatable., but because she had not been given them she she did not make it. I will NEVER go to this vet again. read more

I have been using Dr. Heaslet for vet services since she opened her first clinic in Ashland 20 years ago, and was the first vet to offer truly holistic services, including acupuncture. She was my Dachshund's vet since she was a puppy and now cares for our rescue Lhasa Apso and rescue Siamese cats. Over the past 20 years she has continued to develop her practice, always staying on the cutting edge of holistic veterinary medicine, and offering the best natural pet foods at prices that even beat online stores. Their office visit price is $45, which is in line with other vets in town. I love that Dr. Heaslet knows that feeding your cats things like "Friskies" is likely going to make them sick over time, and that clay litters are likely to cause respiratory issues. If people feel criticized by that kind of information, there are plenty of conventional vets in town who you will feel more comfortable with. But if you want the best information actually based on science, then Dr. Heaslet is who you want to see. But the very best thing about Dr. Heaslet and her team is the truly caring, friendly attitude they maintain with their patients and patients' owners. I don't know how they are able to do that day in and day out over so many years, but they do it every time. It is obvious that Dr. Heaslet and her staff truly love what they do, and they really go above and beyond to give the highest level of care. My dog was egregiously misdiagnosed at this incompetent vet, causing harm to her. It's a fairly simple diagnosis and pretty common, yet this vet had no clue, telling me "nothing is wrong" when in fact a LOT is wrong. When I attempted to go back for another try to find out what was wrong, I was denied service. Not sure what happened over the years but now this vet seems to be refusing to see former clients on a pretty regular basis. Where do I start, I have so many good things to say about this place. I've had many pets, have been to many vets and this is by far the best veterinarian I have ever been to. They actually care!! Can you believe that?! A veterinarian that actually cares about your pet as much as you do. The ladies here are fantastic! My mom recommended me to this place after I had a terrible experience at another office. I was surprised to see that it was only one doctor with her hand picked staff. I love this because every person that works there is qualified, very friendly and the communication between them is great. I brought my cat in for bladder issues and they got us in super quick, they went over ever treatment option available, included prices and listened to what I had to say. The doctor was so patient and kind; you can tell she truly cares about animals unlike so many vets I've had in the past that just try to get you in & out within 5 minutes. I called multiple vets offices, including our normal vet, I was unable to get my sick cat in within a week or more. The fact that he wasn't eating or drinking for more than a day didn't seem to be a big enough concern. I finally called the Cheerful Vet. She got him in within 4 hours. She offered great care and was very thorough over the phone (covid precautions). She made an appt for the end of the day to check on my car again and to make sure he was doing better after antibiotics and fluids. I really appreciate the quick appt and the extra care. As far as price, it was probably a little more spendy, but I feel like all vets are expensive. And it was worth it to have a same day appointment. read more

I have never written a review on yelp before but this is something I feel so passionate about that I feel like something needs to be said. I am pretty soft spoken on everything but I feel like the community needs some honest facts. I went to the Cheerful Vet for two years up until recently. I must say that Dr. Heaslet and staff were very nice and "cheerful" however, The Cheerful Vet is VERY pricey. My first appointment with her she criticized me for letting my cat to be both an outside and inside cat. Each and every appointment I had with her she criticized me for feeding my cat "Friskies" cat food and then tried selling me the food they sell in the office. (The cat I had growing up was an inside and outside cat who ate Friskies and lived to be over 16 years old. Just saying...) Dr. Heaslet also told me I needed several tests ran on my cat (which ran over 300 dollars) when I brought my cat in for what appeared to me to be weight loss. I informed the vet that her eating and drinking and activity level was normal. She was 10 lbs at the time of getting weighed that day. At my new vet I learned that my cat only had tape worms probably from hunting, which is why she looked slightly thinner. The Cheerful vet said nothing to me at all that tape worms might be a cause. A simple medicine to get rid of them was all she needed and has put on weight since. Hundreds of dollars wasted at the Cheerful Vet. Simple vaccines here are higher than other places. I finally got sick of overpaying for basic services and have switched vets. I would also like to repeat that everyone here is VERY nice but Dr. Heaslet does not have the best of knowledge or prices here in the community. read more

We were visiting Ashland in our motorhome with our two dogs. The elder of the two developed a digestive problem a few days in to the trip. She has had problems before, never seems sick, and always recovers completely, but to be on the safe side, we decided to take her to see a doctor. The place was charming, the staff was, indeed, cheerful, and the doctor was kind and thorough. Rather than giving antibiotics, she opted instead for some natural treatments, something I really appreciated. The bill was neither low nor astronomically high, in the same ballpark with other veterinary services we have known. We don't live nearby, but if we had occasion to return to Ashland and had a critter who needed some help, we wouldn't hesitate to return. read more

OMG, I am new to the area and made an appointment with this vet. I show up on time, give our information about my cat and records, (as well as giving them her information prior on the telephone about my cat and what the visit was for). She had a little bump appeared above her right eye I wanted checked out. I told them she is skittish, and should only have female vet and attendants. She is 12 years old. So, I drop her off this morning, after making arrangements for a ride and paying a caregiver for her service and within 15 minutes I get a telephone call from the vet and she says, we cannot see your cat, come to the door and pick her up. I asked, very startled, why? She would not give me an answer. I was in shock, never before have i been treated so disrespectfully like that before from a vet's office. So I came and questioned the girl again about why they cannot see her? I don't understand. But I got no answer again, and said I said to them how rude that was. My cat is spayed, has rabie shots up to date, and is shy, a scardy cat. Nothing happened, but to be treated so rudely like that just shutting me down just like that. So unprofessional I still can't believe it. It they were scared to handle a scardy cat, then why not just say so? These veterinarians who work by themselves are screwy. With no other eyes to watch over them, they do whatever it is they want to do not caring about professionalism at all or veterinarian protocol let alone good customer service. So, as I still am in the clouds about WHY they did not want to see my cat, as the lady on the phone said, "we don't think she would be a good fit for us". That is all. For crying out loud, you mean they are not professional or skilled enough to handle a frightened cat? No where else in her 12 years of veterinarian experience had anyone have a problem handling my cat, and we came from California. But this place had the audacity to make an appointment with me, taking our time and the stress it puts on a cat to come to a vet, and then slam the door as and when they please is inexcusable. As of today, my 14 year old Aussie is a new patient to The Cheerful Vet. The staff is warm and friendly, the exam rooms feel like home and are very clean and I really like Dr. Heaslet. My old boy has a lot of aches and pains and he was calm and happy during his entire exam. Dr. Heaslet was gentle and detailed. I really loved her communication style too....very clear on pros and cons of treatment options, upfront with costs associated with tests and treatments and we discussed several holistic options that could benefit my dog's Senior lifestyle. We've found our new vet. Incredible help yesterday, when one of our dogs had foxtails in his ears. Our regular vet very shortly informed me that the doctor we usually see had left on extended leave, and they wouldn't be able to see us for two weeks. No offer of additional help in case of a cancellation--she told me I'd just have to call every day. We'd been with this vet for 30 years, but that was pretty much the last straw for me--I'd been hanging on because the dogs liked the doctor we usually saw. Called a number of vets, none were taking new patients. I called the Cheerful Vet, and after Jessica asked me to hang on for a minute, she came back and said they'd stay open late to help the dog, could I come at 5:15? ALL the staff stayed till 7:30, working with my dog who had to be sedated in order to be helped. They couldn't have been kinder, or more professional. I was, needless to say, totally impressed, and on Monday, both our dogs' records go to the Cheerful Vet. It's a bit of a farther drive for us, but worth it to get that kind of care. My first visit at the Cheerful Vet went great. And I scheduled an appointment a month ago to have my puppy get his last vaccination today. I was called shortly before the appointment to be told they were out of the vaccine. I cancelled personal appointments, closed my business early, and had prearranged a ride to make this appointment to have my puppy vaccinated and was notified last minute that they ran out of the vaccine. They apologized and told me a lot of puppies came in this morning to be vaccinated.... I made an appointment A MONTH ago. Extremely unprofessional of them to not set aside a vaccine for somebody with an appointment. I was offered another appointment in two days, but how would I ever trust this place again... they might run out of the vaccine again in two days. UNREAL! read more

This is a difficult review for me to write, as my poor old boy is lying next to me not feeling well. I came here a few times within the span of a couple times with my 13 year old bichon, Sammy. He had been vomiting every morning, and acted strange like he was really weak/sick, but around the end of the day, he would actually get hungry and want to eat and go out for a small walk. And then the next morning came around, and the cycle would start. I brought him here not knowing what to do. I called around 7:30 AM one morning, knowing they wouldn't be in yet. I got a call back from the vet herself, Annette, around 8:45, saying I could be in that morning. I brought him in and she did the usual checking of vitals and feeling his joints, etc, temp, and all that. She said that he was quite dehydrated, and had a fever. She suggested a blood panel to see if he had an infection, and I said okay to that. It was nice, too, because they do that work in-house, so you don't have to wait days for the results. She said it looked like he had a liver infection. We went home having had fluids and some antibiotics. Next day: we go in and have more antibiotics and fluids. Unfortunately he was still doing the same thing. Waking up feeling and acting sick, refusing any food and even water, and eventually vomiting. But, he has/did start vomiting later and later in the morning, so maybe that is a good sign? (I have yet to go/call back to report what has been happening, but I will) Overall, Annette is a really nice lady, and seems to really care about the animals and not the money. She seemed to help my old man even if it was just from the fluids they gave him. He has perked up just a touch, and it has been refreshing. He also got comfortable with her quickly. I will definitely recommend The Cheerful Vet to anybody looking for a good, holistic veterinarian. She was willing to give me options based on what my budget is, rather than just trying to shove expensive treatments and tests down my throat. read more

I have take my three animals here numerous times now over the past 7 months to establish care. Every time I have been there has been a wait of a minimum of 20 minutes and the longest of 57 minutes past my appointment time. When I call for an update while there they say "it will be just a few more minutes" then leave you waiting for another 20 minutes. I simply asked that if they are delayed to just communicate that as I come from central point and most appointments are in the middle of my work day. One of my animals is an outdoor stray cat that I've been caring for so she is not a fan of carriers, car rides or the vet so waiting for Lon periods of time just adds to her stress. I asked to speak to the manager John about my concerns and never received a call. Instead I received a letter saying it was best I go to another clinic and he attached my animals records. I called in 3 times trying to speak to him to simply just say I just need communication and was told today by the receptionist that "John said all he needed to say in the letter". That's unacceptable because now I have to find another vet and pay for initial exams again to maintain my pets prescriptions. The staff is always friendly but this is so unprofessional of the manager after I've spent a decent amount of money establishing care with them for all three of my animals. read more

We have been taking our dog here for her regular check ups for a few years. I appreciate that everyone in the office always had a smile and they don't try to sell extra services. They seem to understand that people don't want to pay for things their pet doesn't really need and that extra procedures can cause undue stress on pets that outweigh any benefits. Last week our dog was bit in two places by another dog on the evening. We did our best to clean her up for the night and brought her to the Cheerful Vet in the morning. They did an amazing job of fitting us in by rearranging their schedule. They cleaned up our dog quickly, efficiently and nicely. They even gave her enough treats (high quality ones) that she could take her first dose of medication there since it had to be taken with food. We are so thankful we were able to take our dog here instead of a less personal clinic. read more

When visiting my sister in Ashland my dog got into something that nearly killed him. Apparently he ate something that was toxic to his system. We then had to make an emergency visit to The Cheerful Vet. They were so kind and caring during this stressful situation. Dr Heaslet quickly went to work and did what was necessary to save our dogs life. I'm so glad we went there. They were very knowledgeable and caring and saved our little dog. We love him lots and would have been heart broken if he didn't make it. Apparently he got into some grapes and that's what nearly took him out. I've been coming here for years and the vet used to be so amazing, attentive, compassionate. Now she just seems so strung/stressed out and fake. It seems they're over booking which is so incredibly frustrating. Before it was fine waiting for her to leave and come back multiple times during my appointment but now there's a crowd waiting and my appointment has been rescheduled several times. They need to give people what we're paying for not just hurry up shut up and get out. It's like the patients are taking a backseat in order to make more money. read more

Four years ago I was new in Ashland and looking for a vet for my medium sized dog 7 year old dog. I happened to drive by and saw the sign for the Cheerful Vet. I made an appointment for my boy (dog) to bring him up to date on his shots and yearly physical. Well sure enough everyone greeted us with smiles and offered me tea or bottled water while we were waiting. As we were brought into a treatment room I noticed a small fountain in the corner; there to soothe the owner and patients I'm assuming. The vet came in (yes, she is quite cheerful) and looked over my dog and asked recommended a couple of different blood tests (just as a precaution there was nothing wrong with my dog) and also recommended a dental cleaning but I could use a canine oral care gel ($29.95 -oops forgot to mention that to me until I got the bill) on him in the meantime. When it came time for his Rabies shot the technician was asked by the vet what the weight of my dog was (he has a lot of fur when not trimmed). Anyway, he got his rabies shot, I payed the bill and we went home. Twenty minutes later my boy threw up a little bit. No big deal I thought, until he threw up again and then again and started to lose control of his bowels. I then looked at his gums- very pale. I rushed him back to the vet (we live 5 minutes away) and they immediately took us in to a treatment room which also had a lovely fountain and I was again offered water/tea but declined - I was way to frazzled at this moment. Anyway, she gave my dog two more shots and then an IV for 20 minutes and he started feeling better. Thank goodness! My dog has had rabies shots many times and I suspect the vet gave him a higher dose than he should have had. Anyway, being treated for the reaction caused by the shot (by the Cheerful Vet) I had to pay another $179 for the IV, benadryl, etc. I was in such shock from almost losing my dog that I paid the bill without a word. In hindsight, I believe the vet should have taken some responsibility for her mistake(?) as my dog has never had any reaction to any shots in 11 years now. Of course, we go to a no frills vet in Ashland- no fountains in the waiting room or treatment rooms and no bottled water or hot tea for pet owners but the prices are reasonable and people are genuinely happy where they work. read more

I brought my dog in thinking he was really sick. He ended up being totally fine, however my bill was still around 400$. Not affordable!

We moved to Southern Oregon about a year ago and were very relieved to find A Vet as caring and sensitive as Dr Heaslet for our Miniature Schnauzer. Last week he developed bladder stones. After an ultrasound Dr Heaslet recommended surgery. She assured us that bladder surgery was comfortable for her to do. He was dc'd less than 2 hours after surgery was completed. Shortly after arriving home he became very agitated and was in obviously severe discomfort. I took him to the Emergency Vet Clinic during the night where he remains now 2 days later after having a repeat surgery because 6 stones were left embedded in the urethra. The Cheerful Vet has no radiology equipment even though I now know this surgery requires an x ray to make sure everything has been removed. She also has no possibility of keeping an animal overnight so all dogs are sent home no matter what.. I am very sad that my dog had to undergo all this, very angry that his care was so poor in this situation and I feel betrayed that she didn't just refer us to another Vet who had the necessary equipment to do it correctly. Hopefully others will avoid this by asking the necessary questions prior to using this Dr for serious surgical procedures. read more

My little furry love of my life was diagnosed with stage two tumors a week and a half ago. My western vet handed me a bottle of chemo. I was hoping mother nature could help her out so I sought a naturopath vet for advice on a diet plan that could support her immune system and to get a second opinion. I was scheduled for an hour because the office staff said that the vet needed a lot of time to review her chart and go over specific details. Once I finally got to sit with her, she left the room four times for five to ten minutes at a time to do other things. She never asked questions or had anything to say about my dogs diet or supplements. She simply told me that my dog had about three months to live when my western vet had told me she had 8 months to a year. She then walked back into the room with incredibly inflated costs to her supplements (bromaline and calcium). When I could purchase them for a third of the price at the grocery store. She never even pet my dog or said goodbye before leaving us in the room for the fifth time. I've never seen someone so aloof work in an industry with animals. She lacked critical thinking and overall interest or care for anything. It was sad and I regret every penny spent in her space. read more
