I'm giving this shelter 5 stars not because it's perfect, but because they try very hard towards perfection. I've been around several shelters throughout my life - - and I am a mature person - - and this one really is exceptional.
This forum makes it very easy to skew a post toward the emotional bent of any individual who has an axe to grind. While I do not wish to discredit someone's feelings or perception, I do wish more people would step back and balance their approach with reason and fact. I've read some of what is posted here and find it taken out of context and skewed in a way that is attempting punishment & blame. So much has actually been left out that comments have become lies by omission.
True this shelter does, from time to time, euthanize animals. People need to understand what that really means. In the case of Jackson County animal shelter, they go to great lengths to find homes for animals and to avoid euthanizing them. But what would all the animal lovers of the world do? Would they have all shelters spend extra extraordinary amounts of money (that they don't really have) on every single animal that comes in with a health/behavior problem? That means less animals are helped and less animals get put up for adoption.
While we wish we could save them all, the pure fact of the matter is that we cannot. And simply put, sometimes it is more humane to gently and kindly euthanize an animal to end suffering of either physical or behavioral nature.
Stop and think about it - - if you were an animal lover who worked in a shelter and had to make daily decisions about care/life-and-death, how would that affect your personality ... your ability to talk to all the people that call every day? Most people would struggle and often be a bit cranky. The public has no idea what great lengths these people go through to help every animal they can -- within the LAW & circumstances of resources and finances. It's a TOUGH job -- give 'em a break!!!
Rather than vent and tell such stories, it would be so much more helpful to be part of the solution rather than the problem. VOLUNTEER!!! Learn and help!!!
This shelter is staffed with knowledgeable, skilled caring staff AND volunteers, and I'm very happy to say FAR better than so many shelters across the country. It may not be THE place for EVERYONE to find a new companion, but don't dismiss them because of protracted, skewed complaints.
There are so many behind-the-scenes GOOD stories that the public will never know about. Check them out for yourself, and be grateful we have this place in our region. read more
