I wanted 2, 8 week old female kittens as my last cat had to be put down due to a problem 2 veterinarians could not heal her of. She was 12 and I was very sad. Also I live in the country and I need a mouser. I have had 5 cats, all from kittens, and only the one male disappeared at age 4. I am sure it was because he would go out hunting and he became the hunted. I learned a lesson from that and never got a male kitten again.The 4 females lived out their full lives. I called the Humane Society seeking 2 more female kittens. They refused me any kittens as I live in the county and "they would die". They did offer me barn cats, which I suppose would just automatically take to my barn and "would not die". I do not understand that thinking at all. So it is okay if a barn cat, who they do not know will remain in my barn, is preferred to a kitten who would stay close to my home because I have bonded with it. But in their thinking, the kitten will die. It's okay to give me a barn cat if it dies, but not a kitten. Does this make sense to anyone? I feel they are saying, "sure we will give you a barn cat - who cares if they die. We know for sure that if we give you a kitten it will die." I have had four kittens, and none of them died except from natural causes or a health problem. Since it was near the end of kitten season, I was only able to get 2 kittens that were already 3 months old, from a woman who told me they were from a feral mom. Not knowing what I was getting myself into, I was glad to take them. I tried and tried to bond with them but it seemed hopeless. When I called the Humane Society to ask questions regarding feral kittens the woman I got instructions from was nothing less than a grouch! Something is definitely wrong at that place. I do not care how hard they work to take in animals, with all the negative reviews, they need to learn how to treat people and instructions in how to run a business. read more

First off, I'm an animal lover with a huge heart so I'm excited that the puppies mentioned in this post all found homes. Second, I know the difficulties of running a community non-profit and understand that it's not possible to provide good service 100% of the time. But, the Rouge Valley Humane Society needs to get it's act together. The desk volunteer staff was rude and unhelpful each time me and my family went in. The Executive Director was defensive, rude, and made excuses for the Humane Society's inattention to detail and nonexistent community relations. Full disclosure, my family didnt get a puppy from a recent litter of 6 donated to the HS. My disappointment has nothing to do with my one star review, my disappointment would give them a 3 star, the HS's lack of transparency in the adoption process, staff rudeness, and failure to follow their own procedures is why I'm writing this review and scoring them so low. Their stated procedures in regards to puppy adoption were told to me in person. Here is what I wrote down: 1. 1 week of collecting applications. 2. Review of applications and follow up calls. 3. Collect documents of home ownership, rental agreements, proof of fencing, etc. 4. Puppy and adult dog meet ups if appropriate. 5. Home visits of potention forever homes. 6. Fees and animal take home. We own our home, have land with good fencing, have an dog that is fully vaccinated, etc. We gave our application on Thursday. Staff said we would be called back next day to schedule a puppy/adult dog visit as we have another good dog in our home. The staff were rude and unhelpful. They seemed annoyed by questions and only gave a paper application to me after asking 3 different staff members. Friday we did not receive a phone call, tried to called but there was no answer, so we drove to the HS with our dog with a copy of her vaccination records, knowing we would likely not have a meet and greet but wanted to add the vaccination records to our application. The desk staff was once again rude. Would only take the vac record after asking a few times. We were told someone would call us back, when we explained that that call never came she took the records, name and number again and said we would get a call back later that day. No call Friday afternoon or night. Heard nothing from HS on Sat or Sun. Came in Monday to check application process and all 6 puppies had been adopted out. Great news for the puppies, very very glad they got a home. Sad for us. I asked to speak with the Executive Director in order to understand the process. She was rude and defensive. I had to ask her to let me finish asking my questions multiple times. I acknowledged I was upset but made sure to speak with respect and never once raised my tone. My questions were in regard to the process of adoption and the criteria upon which homes were chosen. She had nothing to say except that she wasn't the one doing the adoption work, basically passing blame off to her subordinates. She could not answer one question about how the puppies were adopted out. She had no explanation for anything except to say that not everyone can get a puppy. It is true not everyone can, but for those that did it is unclear about how that happened. In conclusion: We are a family of committed animal lovers, home owners, that live in the country on acreage with lots of good fencing. We were confident that our home would be a great place to raise a pup. I'm sure all of the staffs problematic behavior and lack of follow throughout would have meant nothing if we were lucky enough to get an animal from them. But we didnt and when we asked why we got the run around and aggressive behavior. As is we will be going elsewhere maybe you should too. read more

Here is my experience: I stop on my lunch not realizing they don't open until noon. Girl says the dog I was interested in 'is going home... she's being adopted'. I say ok. Go back later before close, view remaining dogs and ask 'so that one's no longer here at all?' Same girl states 'well, the dog is here but it's on a 30 day medical hold'. 'oh that's so sad, what kind of medical issues?' 'she ate rat poison and could bleed at any time', I ask, 'why was she on the website with problems like that?' 'we wanted people to apply for her so they could visit with her, does that make sense?' she asks me, 'no it's strange' I say. read more

Nice animals, but not the nicest staff. Came in with my husband to visit with the dogs, but the woman showing us the dogs was standoffish, and wouldn't really answer my questions other than "you need a fenced yard" reply that I understood completely the first times 3 times she repeated it. Not sure if it was because we had my husband's brother with us, or we weren't ready to adopt just yet, but it was odd. I will be going to the Animal Shelter in Merlin. OR from now on... read more

Over my 72 years, I've been involved with Humane Society's all around the country. I've fostered, adopted, and medically cared for animals in various HS's. I even adopted a cat from RVHS a few years ago, I still have him and love him dearly. However this review is about RVHS. They are by far, the worst HS I've ever come in contact with. The staff and management are the most petty, money grubbing people I've ever seen, including the local vets. The money for adoption is premier to them. Someone recently dropped off a pregnant female that decided to show up at my country property and delivered 4 kittens. They were feral by the time she brought them around for me to see them. I domesticated, wormed, defleaed, all of them, had the mama and the runt examined, spayed, shots, etc., as I decided to keep those two. Two of the other three were ready for adoption, one needed another week of attention. I took the two to RVHS to adopt out. They were in better shape than the cat I adopted years earlier from RVHS. They treated me like I was dirt, and refused to take the two kittens, and in my opinion are the absolute worst people I've ever met. I'll never go there again, or recommend them to anyone.....to the detriment of the poor animals they broker. read more

I admire the work that the people are doing here taking care of the animals. My MAJOR concern is the Clorox their using for cleaning. I went in there twice and they had just mopped the floor. I had to leave I started coughing so badly from the fumes that were in the air, it took my breath away. This is TERRIBLE for the animals. The animals poor olfactory sense is being destroyed for no reason other than ignorance. There are many non-toxic ways of cleaning; tea tree oil ( which I put a few drops in my dish water during flu and cold season) and grape seed extract to name few. I told them there, as I was choking to death outside the door, I told them at their thrift store, the woman behind the counter just looked at me and said nothing. So I told her she needed to tell whomever needed to hear about it. I give it one star for this but would give them five star for the work they do. I used to work for the Humane Society in TX, it's a heart breaking job sometime as that one was a kill shelter. read more

The employees here work very hard but the upper management is desperate need of new leadership. The current Director is more concerned with gossip and slandering others (people and organizations alike) than running a business. It is no wonder that the employment turnover is so high, with the few long standing employees only being there because they have been convinced that they have no other option for work. This is a perfect example of what can go wrong when there is no H.R. Department in place with the wrong people at the top of the ladder. It is wonderful what these people do for the animals and no one could ever short them for that it just saddens me that with so much potential in the hard working people employed here that the business will never grow beyond struggling to keep its doors open. read more
