Would give 4 stars but the experience is always up and down...the guy who always talks about his dog is reasonable to a certain point but thinks he's a general in the food source army, lady who works with him in THE BEST...I won't say fat because I'll be barred from life but big ole piggy woman who works alone on Tuesday nights is suchhhhh a Bbbbbit**chhhh my good god complains left and right, 24 dollar tab gave 17 dollar tip....missing all the sauces for wings! One word for the Cellar. . . FREEZING. A little overzealous on the air conditioning this summer, but otherwise a comfortable atmosphere. The Cellar, which is literally located down a flight of stairs in a basement, brick walled area, was a comfortable atmosphere for an early dinner and beer out. Sat at a table located away from the bar, in the middle of open room. The stools were of my favorite style for a bar, cushioned with backs! Love to be able to lean back when drinking a beer. The food was tasty but nothing to write home about. Great variety to choose from for a small bar. The waitress came to check on us every once and a while, I would have liked if she passed by a few more times. Difficult when the bartenders are also the waitresses. Attention can easily get drawn in different directions and some customers forgotten. . . service can lack its timely manner. Having never heard of the Cellar before, I was surprised to see tank tops and merchandise available for sale on the walls. Who knew? Like the outdoor tables/bar stool area to catch a cool breeze on a fading summer day. Perhaps I should have sat out here rather than freeze my toes off inside. Entertainment seems to be plentiful. On the night I went a DJ was setting up taking all requests, any genre. Not a bad local place to get some friends together for bar night out. read more

The best dive bar we've ever had the pleasure to frequent. We always stop in at least once a week for a cold one. Pat and the rest of the staff always are always attentive and friendly. PBR is less than 2 bucks, that should be enough to convince anyone but to really drive my point home: The buffalo chicken dip is by far the best I've ever had (seriously). And it's so damn affordable, I would pay double for it now that I'm hooked (plz don't do that, I can't help myself) The rest of the food is delicious as well and always comes out right away no matter how busy it gets. The staff is always super attentive and we never are waiting for beers. They have fun DJ Nights and Trivia Nights and it's just a great time. read more

I have visited this place a few times, by myself, with a buddy and with a group. Entirely unimpressed. This is a neighborhood dive bar, full of locals. $1.62 for a 10 oz PBR draught and I think it was $2 for a 10 oz. Bud Light draught . . . need I say more? The worst thing about sitting at the bar and drinking draughts is that just after you finish HALF of your beer, the girl behind the bar brings you another one, plops it down, and walks away. I was almost offended that she thought we were some sort of drunks. But then I looked around at the clientele sitting at the bar, in her defense, there are a lot of drunks. The bartenders just apply the same "keep feedin' 'em beers" mentality to every customer. Unfortunately, they have been trained that this is good service. People who like cheap beer and being treated like a drunk are the people who are giving this place 4 or 5 stars. This is not a restaurant, it is a place to go when you have $15 in your pocket. I don't frequent taverns generally because of the low quality of food, service, and atmosphere, and this dive reinforces this sentiment. The service was slow and un-hurried, the selection of food as average and not to inspiring. I had the Chicken Supreme and I can say that the "supreme" part was how ordinary and devoid of taste and flavor it was. Suffice to say, I will not be going back. read more

It can't be wrong if it feels so right...right? The name doesn't sugar coat - this is a cellar without pretentiousness or attitude and a little crusty around the edges and I love it. Drinks are cheap and strong, the service is efficient and friendly (and yes, 90% are cute girls) and the food is GOOD!! The pizza is excellent as are the burgers and they always have great (and well priced) specials. It is definitely a mixed bag when it comes to the crowd - but that is part of the appeal. I would have to say this is the best dive bar in the area. Just some background on this joint: this was the local spot in Abington for years and apparently the only people who went there were the local drunks. A couple of years ago a new owner bought this place so you get a younger crowd as well as the aforementioned alchys who have been there since the 1970's. They have shuffleboard and a self serve popcorn thing (you try to figure out the proper name for it). The urinal has a corkboard with the sportspage pinned to it (some of the female yelping population may not appreciate this benefit). Beers are fairly cheap, there's food but I wouldn't touch it. What else can I say about this place? Oh, some of the bartenders aren't bad to look at (enormous fake breasts, anyone?) and they have free Xbox hooked up to a plasma TV. read more

The bartenders are the absolute best, they'll fill you up faster than any other bar will do. Takes only seconds to get a refill. The food is first class as well. Try the BBQ chicken pizza, best around. Cassie, Pat, Heather, and Jess are just a few of the great bartenders here that are happy to see you and will say "hi" as you come in the door. Very welcoming. Pat is a fairly new general manager who is just the bees knees! Always friendly, always welcoming, and very witty to boot. Phenomenal Experience, So I went to the Cellar Tavern, and had 3 beers in the course of 2 hours. I was informed by the bartender that I had to leave. After asking multiple times, they refused to tell me why. As someone who frequents the Cellar and leaves more than generous tips I was very confused, as one would be after 3 beers in the course of 2 hours. With no explanation, I left and didn't argue the fact cause I'm a reasonable person. I brought 6 people who all drank bringing in quite the amount of business. I give the Cellar a 0 out of 10, as the food is pretty bad, and well let's face it, JP Ryan's is far better. The least they could have done is "cut me off" after my 3 beers in 2 hours. I hope the staff gets more training and learns how to deal with people that bring in business. I have a lot of friends that go there, and well, they won't be anymore. read more

A little pub, located next to the train tracks, down from main street in Abington. We came for Halloween festivities, a car full of Boston kids, we knew the DJ, so even though it was small and seemingly a dive, we were prepared to enjoy ourselves. While busy trying to ignore the cons of this location, the cops were called, and the bar was shut down. It wasn't past 11pm, if that. Apparently the mens room had blood covering something. We were asked to leave as it was now a 'crime scene', we had the cops follow us up the street to our car. Hopefully just a bad Halloween prank... The mixed drinks were strong. They didn't have any of the usual beers that I drink on tap. I was forced to try shipyard pumpkin head, which for a spicy, seasonal didn't suck. This is an amazing dive bar. Incredibly cheap and have great daily deals. Hard to get a meal deal and some beers and spend more then 10 dollars. Staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. They have groupons every now and then. But if its just two people going you may not be able to spend the 30 dollars needed. I suggest get lunch for the next day as well. read more

Let's just take a minute and think about the place we're reviewing. This isn't fine dining, it's a bar in the cellar of a building. Hence..."The Cellar". Keep that in mind before you blast in like it's a high end eatery. That being said, I love this place. It is set up much like it's name says. It's down the stairs, its dark, people may look at you funny if your not a regular. What else could youi want? They have in my opinion probably the coldest pint I have ever had. Think about a beer slushy. How they get their mugs that cold is beyond me. And for $2 domestic drafts? Sign me up. The food is fantastic too. Great sandwiches and burgers, appetizers and entrees. I highly recommend the Spicy Chicken Sandwich with onion rings. And if you are around during the day, they have a $5 lunch menu. Finally, don't forget to take your roll of the Yahtzee dice. For one dollar, you get one roll per shift. Get the Yahtzee, get the pot. I was in the day after Thanksgiving and the pot was somehwere over $1900. read more

It may seem counter-intuitive to give a "dive bar" a 5 star rating, but in this case, it's well deserved. They've done a lot of work on the patio, to include installing a flat-screen TV, extending the awning, replete with tables and chairs. In the summer, or even on a chance nice afternoon, it's nice to sit outside. Being from Arizona, I miss a nice patio. There is an extensive menu, but I'd stick to what they do best: Pizza, bar food, burgers and sandwiches. I was dead-set against eating there until I had one of their pizza's, and now I won't go anywhere else. My wife and I have sampled the bar fare pretty much all over the Rockland/Abington area, and other than a actual restaurant, you'll be hard pressed to find anything better in this neck of the woods. The service is NOT what I would usually expect from a dive bar. The bartenders are not just friendly, but from my experience, have gone out of their way to give my wife and I fantastic service. It's a little shocking because we're hardly regulars. Bear in mind that the bartenders do double duty as waitresses, but even sitting on the patio, I can count on seeing someone at least every 10-15 minutes, and barring that, they have no problem taking an order at the bar, and running it out to wherever you may be sitting. A word of warning: the temperature inside can fluctuate wildly. That actually has nothing to do with the staff, as much as it's just really drafty. Bring a sweatshirt and you'll be fine. The wife and I cracked the code on that a while ago, so bringing an extra layer to put on or remove is just a part of it's charms. For drawbacks: It's not all that disabled friendly. I walk with forearm crutches, so navigating the steps can be slightly problematic at times, and there are steps coming down, and steps going up to the restroom. While I'm talking about the restroom... This would be The Cellar's only Achilles Heel. I have no idea what the ladies room is like (the wife has never complained however), but the men's room could certainly use a makeover. Put into perspective though... It's not like I go to a bar to drink some beers and have a pizza in the bathroom. The crowd is a younger at night, the daytime crowd is certainly mixed, and it's all over the place on Sunday's during football season. But don't let that throw you. We used to get the "who the hell are you" stares when we first started going there, but it's one of those places that has a lot of local regulars aka Day Drinkers. Don't worry, they don't bite. Overall, I'm happy that I looked past some of the stigma that this type of dive bar tends to have... I've been happily surprised to the extent that my wife and I no longer go to TK O'Shea's, which used to be our little hang-out, and now that the patio is looking good, we won't be going to the Abington Ale House. read more

YEP! My friend and her boyfriend come here all the time and had brought my boyfriend and I here a couple weeks ago and I am in love. If you love cheap beer, pizza and dive bars...this is definitely the place for you! Walk down the steps, regulars turn around because well... you're not a regular! Luckily I always go with my friends so I'm down. ;) Anyway! On Sundays they have $2 pizza's and $1.50 PBRs....what up, heaven?! The Taco pizza is amazing, and the bartenders are really sweet. They have TVs all around to watch whatever major game is on. They also have a patio on each side to smoke cigarettes. They also have bands and/or solo singers play in the corner as well. You kinda can't really hear when you're talking to people because the place is a little too small for that.. but that's the South Shore, for ya. The cellar is just the perfect dive bar. Always a younger crowd especially on Friday nights. The owner is always around and genuinely seems like a good guy. Food is ok, this is not the type of place you go to for a nice sit down dinner anyways. As for the Friday night dj like someone previously said, I think he does a pretty good job. Yes it does get a little loud, but what do you expect for such a tiny little bar. Also he has always been very good with taking requests from me and my friends unlike alot of stuck up dj's who try and act like music gods. If you are a person of color, this is not the place for you. Waiter barely looked at us after a simple food order. She proceeded to attend to ALL other customers in the bar without the courtesy of asking if we wanted a glass of water. She took the order wrong and proceeded to tend to other customers. The waiter was familiar with a majority of the customers there that night so she was back and forth serving others and having personal conversations with everyone. I wasn't super impressed by the pizza-- the cheese combo seemed to lack something for me, and I didn't like the ratio of dough to cheese & toppings. I come to the cellar ever once in a while to grab a nice cheap draft beer. I was surprised to see a dazzling new bartender serving up my favorite brews. Sarah was great. She was attentive, informative and also pretty easy on the eyes. I found another beer in front of me before I could even ask. Sarah is a straight ninja behind the bar.
