Went to the Castle because they were offering classic British Sunday Roast (if you don't know what that is, it's a big deal over here. Some sort of meat (beef/pork/lamp/chicken/vegetarian option, plus roasted potatoes, veggies, gravy, and Yorkshire pudding (a sort of conical croissant?))). My SO had the Sunday roast customized for her in her inimitable way, but was still not pleased. I ordered off the regular menu, and loved it, so 5 stars! She can set up her own Yelp account if she wants to argue. The service was friendly and helpful (although once the food was served, we didn't see them again. This is kind of normal for UK pubs? I feel like the booze options on Yelp need updating: beer, wine, straight liquor and gin & tonics. Maybe call it Uk pub full bar? No martinis or Moscow mules here.) Our server (south Asian dude, helpful, accommodating, and friendly) was awesome, but so were the other staff (2 nice young ladies of different ethnic ancestry), so basically across the board great service. The Castle was located on our daily route from our place to the train, so I often would walk by and see crowds of people enjoying happy hour cocktails spilling out onto the street. Looked like a fun place so I bookmarked this for later. After noticing it was somewhat hard to be seated in a group at restaurants, we made a reservation for a Sunday Roast dinner. I noticed we were running late, so I called the restaurant and they held our table. After a long day of touristy stuff, we were hungry. My family ordered their favorite comfort foods including a watermelon salad, the chicken roast, the beef roast, steak and fish & chips. The kids had lemonade and we ordered a little beer and wine. Dinner was good and service was as well, good spot for a nice Sunday Roast. read more

My neighbourhood bar! Came here a couple times, once with an old German friend from a conference and once on a date. First time had the ciders. Place looks really nice and elegant even from the outside but inside had a strange (maybe like cleaning after spilled beer?) smell. Was fine the second time I came. There's a bar area and quite a few tables inside btw, as well as outside tables too that are great for people watching in the summer! Second time had the twists on Aperol Spritz that they had - and those were great! The Hibiscus & Orange Blossom Spritz (Tanqueray gin, prosecco, Fever-Tree raspberry & Orange Blossom Soda, hibiscus, dried orange) and the Peach, White Grape, and Aperol Spritz. Both were really good and with some fruits inside :) The only thing I would say is that the waiters weren't super attentive / stopping by and getting the second drink took a while, but everyone was still nice and it was a good time :) read more

My friend and I decided to stop by here after a chocolate making class nearby for a midday pint and a quick snack. I grabbed an apple cider, which was tasty, but a little too sweet for my taste. We also decided to share the halloumi fries , which were AMAZING. The outer layer was a good amount of crisp, and the saltiness of the halloumi paired SO well with the chipotle jam. The chipotle jam was sweet, with a hint of spice. It was a perfect pairing for a midday snack! read more

On New Year's Eve I thought I booked at table for 4 at The Castle. However I made a mistake and accidentally booked the wrong day. I showed up and spoke with Linda she worked extra hard to accommodate for us. The staff working that evening were all kind, welcoming and warm, plus the food was great as usual. Thanks again to the staff for the great evening and especially to Linda for going above and beyond to help. Linda you're a star, I will be back again soon! read more

Close pub if your staying at the Hyatt. Great little place, at first we had no idea you had to order your items at the bar until we saw that notation on the menu. Besides that great selection of beer, menu is short and sweet and the food is excellent. Great ambiance for a pub and really enjoyed our stay. Friendly staff so that made our stay enjoyable. Just spent a week in London and went to this spot three times. It's very convenient to the Holland Park Tube station and a short walk from the Hilton Kensington. Nice selection of beer and cider and we adored the local pub feel, especially after discovering a lot of pubs around London now share a single owner (with the same drink selections and food menu - so boring!). The food at The Castle is good, especially the beef reuben and the baked cheese appetizer. Also the toilets don't involve stairs, which was helpful to my arthritic knees. We'll definitely be back when we get to London again. read more

I chose here after reading decent yelp reviews so we came here for dinner on a Thursday evening after being at the beer festival. We ordered arancini balls and brisket cubes to share to begin. These were OK. For my main I ordered the chicken burger with avocado and ham. They had no ham left but they added salami. Ordered sides of sweet potato fries and truffle mac & cheese balls. Staff seemed a tad all over the place but were overall pleasant. The sweet potato fries were cold. Yes cold. They shouldn't be cold. The only reason this is not a two or less is the truffle mac & cheese balls were absolutely delightful. read more

The castle continues to be a mighty fine drinking hole. Great atmosphere, lots of dark wood, plush seating, massive candle stick holders with dripping church pillar candles. Amazing selection of beers - I was happy to see that they had Santa Paws by Brewdog on over Christmas this year. Good prices, nice staff and a genuinely great little haunt. Great if you fancy a nice drink, and with good noise levels great venue for a catch up with friends. read more

This place is a great local pub a block away from the Holland Park underground station and a short walk from the Hilton Kensington. The ambiance is warm and cozy. We ate here twice during our stay in London. The fish pie and fish and chips were delicious. My mom also enjoyed the burger. The beer selection is decent. The second time we visited we had to wait for a table, but we didn't have to wait long. There is space for more tables but they currently are not maximizing their space. read more

We started off trying to find a place in Notting Hill to eat dinner but took a wrong turn and ended up at The Castle. We were hungry and decided to settle on it for dinner. Wow - this place ended up being exactly what we were looking for! Delicious, local, cozy, and trendy. The atmosphere is great with it's big oak bar and large couches for hanging out or grabbing a bite. There is also a dining spot around the back of the bar for larger groups. We came for a later dinner, around 8-9pm but it looked like the happy hour crowd was still hanging out and enjoying their time. Younger crowd mid 20s-30s. A casual laid back upscale vibe. The bartender was awesome! He took our order at the bar and took a moment to break away and check on us during our meals. Great guy! The food was fantastic, highly recommend their pies. Whenever I get a chance to drink with my friend Bryn you can be sure of a few things; tall tales will be told, heads will ache the next day and a right great time will be had by all. This particular evening started out at the Olympia on Kensington high street. It was closed and I got a phone call telling me I had walked too far. Ten minutes later I was at Holland Park gate shaking hands and inviting the scathing commentary on my sense of direction. Really though, if you had a lovely park named Holland would you put up a big sign that says "Belvedere" on the gate? That's just asking for trouble. The Castle welcomed us with open arms. Well, Mike the bar man did to be exact. With plenty to choose from on tap or in a bottle, somehow we went with Peroni. What surprised me more was that I didn't want to spit it out. It would seem that you lot get a much better tasting version of the stuff than us poor Canadians do because it's like drinking dishwater here. The atmosphere was quiet and intimate. It was smaller than I was expecting and as such we hung out in front in true chav fashion. There were cat calls, disapproving looks and a homeless lady accosted me for change while rubbing my arm in the process. It was surreal but a wonderful evening. It's the kind of place that I would gladly make my home away from home if I lived close by. Courteous and attentive staff. Lively characters in attendance. The service was slow to begin with, I had a problem to get a tab open initially as the waitress did not know how to do it. The beer selection wasn't as good as I had hoped for but it was decent enough. Where things went wrong was with the food. Some of the dishes were fine and some were simply poor and cold. The sweet potatoes fries were soggy and cold. The batter on the fish likes these fries soggy and not crisp. The only dish that was good was the crab cakes. I think this is definitely one of the best pubs in this bit of town. I used to come up to Notting Hill quite a bit from Sheppard's Bush and this is a great half way house. It's small and intimate with a great looking exterior and a really well fitted and simple interior. If anything it verges on being a gastropub (risottos feature on the menu) but it's done well, the food is nice and the atmosphere is relaxed. Local people come here for a drink with friends - simple as that. They do pub quizzes (call to check the night) and serve fruit beer too so that must satisfy at least a few of your requirements for a good mid week evening out. read more

There's one way to describe this place - meh. It seems to be having a serious identity crisis which makes everything feel a bit akward. There's skateboards on the walls right next to old leather sitting chairs and a very mucky fish tank. I was chided by the barmaid for my grammar which really pissed me off even though I shrugged it off with my usual charm and civility. I think she was just trying to start conversation but it was an overly-aggressive way of doing it. They had an eclectic selection of beer, including some Japanese ones on tap which was nice but of course they were out of the one I wanted. I know there's stiff competition for pubs and restaurants in Holland Park but this place was trying to hard and, as a result, was empty on an otherwise busy weekday evening. read more

Really enjoyed this place while I was in town. This became my local pub for a week while I was staying in the Hilton Kensington just down the road, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself every time I was there. Food is good, reasonably priced, and surprisingly exotic for a pub, I would agree with Saskia that the selection is verging on gastropub. The best part is, they do the food well whether it's straight forward fish and chips or the more elaborate mushroom risotto (my g/f ordered this one afternoon and I was really pleasantly surprised how good it was). Beer selection is ample and right up my alley, any place that has both Pauliner and Leffe Blonde on tap is going to have a special place in my heart as those are two of my favorite beers. Atmosphere is very relaxed, couches a plenty and a late 20s, early 30s crowd that is just there to relax and enjoy themselves. Perfect neighborhood pub type of feel for me, none of the 40 something construction workers getting hammered here. Perfect place for lunch in my mind, good food, casual atmosphere and reasonably priced. I miss it already. read more

Totally worth checking out! If you are a foodie, beer lover, or pub lover. This place is really charming with super friendly, knowledgeable staff and they make awesome food. I was in London for three weeks staying in Notting Hill. After a long day of seeing the city I'd come back to the place for a drink and a bite to eat. I actually ended up here three times during my stay. Pretty good considering the hundreds of other places I could have checked out in the area. If I was a local this would be my regular spot. Highly recommend the fish and chips and their Veggie burger! Fun fact, it seems they typically have you order at the bar. So if you're sitting there on a crowded evening wondering why you cant get any service, its a tip worth knowing :) read more

This pub has an interesting and mixed interior which i quite like. The beer selection is always changing and they even had a strawberry beer which i thought was yummy. Even though there was a massive fight whilst i was there, the staff dealt with it very well and it did not dampen my experience. The only down side to this pub (although i have never eaten there so i cant speak for the food) is that it does get very busy so you will struggle to find some where to sit! Genuine atmosphere adds to the rating of this pub. I ordered the Southern Fried Chicken and it came out blazing hot with a very dark crust. Slightly seasoned and moist all around. Roasted Poblano peppers were well grilled with a strong pepper burst with each bite. The chips were well suited to my American tastes as they were well fried and crispy. The summer slaw was cream based and contained carrots, broccoli and spinach(I think). The slaw did not appeal to me but I'll credit that to my not being familiar with this dish. Spotted this place while out for a walk, I'm new to this area of London and just trying to get My bearings. The pub has a great feel, warm, welcoming and comfortable. The menu was more then sufficient with quite a few vegetarian entrees. Settled on the bangers and mash and took the barkeep up on a suggested beer. Everything was delicious. Great little neighborhood pub with an amazing interior and ambiance - unique seating for each table, including a great little half booth in the corner that fits 2 people that we loved. This was our last night in London and we thought a Pub would be a great place for dinner. And we were not disappointed ! First, the waitress was outstanding,she did her best to help us find a a table and then was so warm and friendly we thought we were old friends! She helped us order with good advice and we split fish and chips so we could also enjoy the wings,very good,and the baked cheese in a crusty bread. Everything was very good.
