Visiting London and this was the very first pub I got to try and it was great! Stopped here with my friend as we game planned my visit. Firstly, the pub is spacious and is in a great location since there so many attractions around it. It was busy inside due to it popularity but my friend and I had no issue getting a table. Service was great and the servers were super kind. I ordered a cider which was delicious and huge! Didn't get to try the food but it will be next on my list once I come back. Nicholson's restaurant is located conveniently in a a very cute part of Covent Garden, between Long Acre and Floral Street. All of Covent Garden is very cute, even walking around before we picked this restaurant was great fun. Lots of shops and vendors. The Restaurant is located above the bar in a building called the White Lion. The bar below was bustling at 6pm on a Friday, it was so packed and very rowdy. Londoners are totally different once they have their drinks. We were no different, I'm assuming. When we arrived a gentleman told us if we wanted to drink, we had to wait for seats. Luckily, we wanted to eat and drink, so we were instructed to go upstairs. Upstairs is a very small room filled with tiny tables and a bar. The WC water closet (toilets) are located 2 floors below, down a spiral staircase. The staff was slow but they were extremely busy and we were entertained. We ordered the following: Beavertown Gamma ray IPA, a diet Coke and a Schöfferhofer grapefruit radler. The IPA is a stronger beer and we preferred it to the Schöfferhofer but it's up to taste. For our meals we ordered the Chargrilled Chicken and chorizo. Which brought Chargrilled chicken breast, pan-fried chorizo and long stem broccoli with baby potato wedges. So delicious! Bangers (sausage) & Mash, which includes British Pork sausages on cornish clotted cream mashed potatoes, topped with rich caramelised onion gravy and crispy onions. This was excellent as well, the gravy was everything. I was pleasantly surprised to see how the kitchen sends the food up from a dumbwaiter below, allowing for the food to arrive piping hot to your table. This restaurant is definitely worth visiting. The atmosphere alone is worth it. I'm not sure when I'll be in London again but I would love to come back and try something new. read more

Silly me, trying to sneak in a meal at a packed pub then opting for something that sounded more like a dish I'd get in California than one I should try in London. So how'd that work out? Two stars doesn't say it all but it says enough. First, if you insist on eating in Nicholson's know that it is loud, a virtual hive of busy-ness, and probably better suited for a pint than a meal. Second, should you insist on a meal you'll do best to stick to traditional pub food like Fish & Chips (which were adequate, but far from best in class). And third (but you already know this), do not under any circumstances entertain the idea of anything that is not traditional pub food. If I heeded my own advice here I'd not have wound up with a tofu-vegetable dish that didn't just border on inedible, it was. But what kind of person orders a tofu dish in an English pub? I'm sheepishly raising my hand over here so you won't have to. If you insist on eating here - though I'd actually recommend you only drink here - you have your marching orders. read more

My husband and I came here for dinner when we were in London and had a nice experience. The restaurant was clean and intimate, and the staff were very friendly. For dinner, I had the fish n' chips with mushy peas. The fish was pretty fresh, but slightly greasy and not as crispy as I was hoping for. The fries were decent as well. The mushy peas were good--great pea flavor not masked by a bunch of other spices. The prices were fair and the service was pretty good. Awesome place right off but not far from the Carnaby area shopping row. Plenty of dining space inside, with an upstairs dining room as well. They, like many pubs claim to have the best award winning pies - and they sure did have an assortment, about 8 or so pies. I got the classic beef ale pie, which was the restaurant special. It was a pretty good deal which came with a side of mashed potatoes and veggies as well. Flavor was a lil on the bland side, but I'd say the side of gravy that I doused it in made up for it. Never realised how hard it was to find a traditional English lunch in London on a Sunday. If you are craving a roast beef lunch or a traditional pie eat early in the day. We headed for lunch around 1pm and after 3 pubs we finally found one that had 1 x roast beef and Yorkshire and 1 x beef pie. The pie was delicious however the roast beef and Yorkshire were a little underwhelming. Lesson - eat lunch early or head out of the centre of London! read more

As I approached the bar it was pack outside but rather empty inside, it was walking distance from my hotel and I wanted a quick bite to eat for dinner that was easy and inexpensive...the calamari I had was crispy cooked well and flavorful, but the cheese burger I ordered was awful, the burger patty was tasteless over cooked and dry. read more

The food is bland and the house ale is flavorless. The sandwich was drowned in mayo and, after the first half, I'd wished I'd gone to literally anywhere else on the street for a vastly superior meal. I was weighing if it was worth finishing it since I already paid and decided it wasn't worth eating the second half of the awful sandwich. I was on my way to McDonald's to grab a quick cheap bite. But when I saw the lunch menu advertised, a beer sounded good given it was a very hot day. Starting at £8.50, you get a pint and meal. I ordered a chicken club for £8.95 with the Nicholson beer. The club was average but good. The chicken was more of a mayo chicken salad. The chips were delicious. The beer was nothing special but a very good lager type. Given the price it was a satisfying lunch and a break from the summer heat. read more

Loved the atmosphere and the place certainly draws a crowd. It's pretty cool that the pub has been around since the late 1800's (if I read the information correctly) and I'm impressed with how nicely the place is kept. It nearly feels like the pub still looks like it did then. Came here with a co-worker while on a business trip and we didn't quite get how this worked. We tried sitting downstairs to eat but we never saw a server so after investigating the upstairs, we chose to stay put. Very cool dining room. Unfortunately, I came for dinner more than I did for drinks and the food was mediocre at best. I was fairly disappointed as the one menu item I wanted was sold out. I settled for some sort of cheese and spinach pie which the crust was way overdone and the filling was pretty bland. They claimed gin was their specialty and what started the business for them so I opted to try one that was recommended by the server and it was just average. Maybe it was a hit in the late 1800s but I wouldn't need it again. I should have tried an ale. Go here for drinks and the atmosphere. Skip the food. read more

I really loved this pub. I stopped in here with my travelling buddy for a pint and food. I ended up getting a Chase Oak Aged Sloe & Mulberry Gin with Fever Tree tonic. It was amazing! I love mulberry and as a G&T fan this was my favorite gin during the whole trip. I also ordered a Lentil Cottage Pie with vegan gravy and roasted vegetables. It was on the menu as vegan and I didn't need to ask for anything to be changed. The menu had a lot of wonderful classic English dishes like Fish and Chips and Ham Hock and Cheese Pie. The lentil pie was savoury, warm and a perfectly flavourful meal after trundling in the rain. I really enjoyed the the interiour, it was an old building with much of the original structure of dark wooden beams and metal embossed ceillings. It had an old world charm in a modern world. In the entry way was an amazing mosaic tile installation. There is a lot of history in these old pubs and this one made a really good use of it all. What stood out was the staff, with their friendly but reserved mannerisims, the food and the G&T. read more

Wait staff told us that we all had to buy a MEAL in order to sit at a table even though the three of us had already ordered and received drinks from the bar and were were trying to order a sharing size meat platter. When I told them fine we will leave then they changed and said never mind it's ok. I don't appreciate being bullied or manipulated. Therefore I gave them one star. After we paid another wait staff came up and aggressively asked if we could pay the bill as though we were going to skip out. I would never recommend someone I liked to go to this place. I rarely write reviews, but this spot deserves one, not even so much for the food as for our waiter. As a quick note, the food was tasty and filling for a reasonable price--typical English pub eats, good beer, good desserts. We ate upstairs in the dining area, which has a charming and beautiful atmosphere. The highlight, though, was Marcin, our waiter (he looks very much like Steve Martin). He was incredibly funny and warm, and he added so much to our experience in a way that no waiter ever has in my experience. He offered us a great sampling of beers, providing the history of each one and their notable qualities. He noted that we were speaking Russian and spoke with us in Russian as well, adding some personal history as to why he knew the language. He checked in with us without being intrusive (in fact, for the first time ever, I was really excited when the waiter approached). Truly, Marcin was the best part of our experience.
