One of my first things after settling in was to ask the hotel concierge where to go for fish and chips. Without hesitation, he said The Mitre - so I went. I was not disappointed. The haddock was perfect - fried with the skin on. The breading was perfectly crispy, and both the fish and the breading were exquisitely seasoned. The chips were big and both crispy and soft. The tartare sauce was wonderfully bold - caper forward. The curry sauce was completely unnecessary in my opinion and the mushy peas were overly bland. The outdoor seating is delightful. Staff seemed a bit chaotic and it took a little time to get someone to take my order, but once I interacted with them, they were incredibly friendly. My waiter didn't drink and knew nothing about the beer options, so I went with my go-to for fish and chips: Guinness. read more

Visited the other evening with some friends visiting. Some got the fish and chips which were fine, but they were a lot heavier on the breading than fish. Another got the roasted squash and chickpea salad and added steak which they said was delicious. I wouldn't say the service is great. The interior was beautiful and it had a good atmosphere. If I were to go back I would want to go to attend their quiz night or live music night! read more

My family and I stopped in for dinner, the night we arrived in London. We were staying in the area and was looking for another place, when I crossed The Mitre. After the other spot was unavailable, I lured my group back to this place because the vibe was very comfortable and we needed that after a long trip. We got a big booth in the back for the family and my sister and I decided to try some local drafts from Camden Town Brewery. My aunt went for a glass of wine and my mom, a cider. As a family, we ordered a variety of dishes from the starters menu and entrees. My sister and I both had the soup with the seared scallops, my nephew had a kids burger (which was the same size the regular) and our mother had the fish and chips. My aunt had this beautiful vegetable pie and my cousin - a steak with fries. First night in London and everyone enjoyed their meal at The Mitre. Good find in the Holland Park area. read more

Such a nice bar! It's quite busy and lively inside, and outside they have tables on the street (reminds me of French cafes) where you can also sit, converse, have your drinks, and people watch. I don't think the servers come outside to take orders so you have to order inside. Came here a few times for the outside area seating in the summer, and really enjoyed it! We had a magnificent celebration dinner at The Mitre last Tuesday night. We were there under the trees of Holland Park Avenue and the full super-moon. The Mitre did not disappoint us in matching the setting. I have to thank the management and staff for accommodating our large party on the outside terrace. Special thanks are due to Laura, our server, who was excellent with 15 people. The food and drinks were more than equal to the joy of the occasion. My pie and pate were both delicious. All the appetizers were equally superb, but a special call out is due for the olives. I'm not kidding - do yourself a favor and have some on your visit. I need to discover wherever these are sourced! This was our first real outing with some of the health restrictions eased, and it will be warmly remembered by all those present. read more

On my third day in London, my friend and I wanted fish and chips. This restaurant came recommended by one of our bus tour guides, and seemed to be higher quality, which is important to me when eating fish. It did not disappoint. It was not overly busy at that time of night. We were seated immediately. Our server was nice, and our food came out very quickly. It's interesting being from the U.S. and getting an actual filet for fish and chips. The chips were very good, as was the fish, of course. It goes without saying, right? We also got dessert. I had a chocolate delice, and my friend had the sticky toffee. Both were amazing. Mine was incredibly rich and is best described as either a thick fudge, or a chocolate ganache. The hazelnut ice cream was tasty, too. The drawbacks of this place: The chairs sit too high at the table, so our legs were squished, and we couldn't scoot in. Service was sometimes difficult to come by; we had to wait a long time for our bill. Language was a barrier, so one of our servers had to get someone else to explain the dessert to me. Overall, I'd definitely say this place is worth the money; they could just use some improvement in their service department. If I ever visit again, I'd probably go back. I'm not well versed in British flavors, but we found The Mitre to be a welcomed refuge from the cold on our first night in London. It came recommended from my sister who lives about a mile away. We actually ended up eating there twice in a week and it was good both times. In the US we heavily season our steak, and we also grow most of our meat on cattle farms with corn fed beef, so I was surprised at the lack of seasoning on my steak. However I could tell the meat was of good quality and the dipping sauce was great. I would recommend to anyone visiting holland park / noting hill if they're looking for some good hearty food with a chill vibe. read more

A stellar pub to meet friends for a fun night! Great selection of beer and wines, in a relaxed but buzzy atmosphere. The food here is generally of really high quality, but I was let down slightly by last nights beef shin risotto, which was a little too Al dente for my tastes. Our starters of the charcuterie board, fritto misto and saganaki cheese were delicious and well presented. My aunt and uncle are expats in London currently and frequent this pub regularly with their west highland white terrier, Daisy. Tonight they brought my cousin, friend, and I there for a local dining and drinking experience. Let's be honest though, we were mostly invested in experiencing the puppy at the pub. As expected, it was great. The service was prompt and he waiter was attentive and it was reasonably priced. There was a great mix of friendly customers, and the dog was not only welcomed with open arms but was a huge hit! We had some chicken caesar salads, sliders, and ciders and were very pleased with everything. The dining experience was solid - I had the wild mushroom, tagliatelle wilted spinach & smoked garlic pasta dish and my hubby the Rare Breed Burger, Jarlsberg cheese, red onion, harissa mayo French fries. There was a pleasant surprise in that the latter item was a double patty and I wished the former were a bit larger in portion as it was quite tasty. Our server seemed tired and short and it took some time to get menus and water so good thing we weren't in a rush. Though the food was not anything to write home about, you benefit most from the exceptional location (near Holland Park and the tube), views (of people on the street and throughout as the windows and patio doors open to the front) and general ambiance (airy, relaxed, positive). However I am compelled to bump this up to a 4* because of a medical issue I had and the manager, Joe, went above and beyond to assure my comfort. The cocktail (negroni) was not good and probably the worst to date. Seating inside was comfortable and there is also outdoor seating available. We came for dinner on Saturday 14th May, we were so disappointed to see that the structure of the menu had changed. we ordered a verity of food from the menu both starters and mains. Predictably for this bit of West London The Mitre is a gastropub. Actually, is it even a pub? I'd say maybe it's more of a wine bar sort of restaurant thing. It's quite a bit further down from Notting Hill so isn't catering for any of the trendy end of this neighbourhood and is squared aimed at the more family based, professional types that drink from glasses blown by their own trumpets. I'm not a fan but they've got a full bar an average menu and loads and loads of space. It's really big inside so if you really can't find a seat anywhere else this is the place for you. read more

I saw the waiter once, when he took our order, he never inquired if we needed more drinks or to ask how the food was. On this Saturday afternoon, I had decided to head to the Notting Hill area of London to see what it was like, and stumbled upon this restaurant on the walk back towards home. I was starving and there really isn't much else within a few blocks of here, so we sat for a late lunch around 4 pm. There were plenty of tables available, but for some reason I was seated on the leather bench that had been slashed and taped over. Not the best way to be welcomed, but I'll assume that the tear had just happened and that the seat might be fixed very soon. Anyway, I ordered a burger because - like I said - I was starving and because I like to see how a country does its burgers. This one was ok, quite large and ... different. It had a sweet onion relish on it that made it interesting, and not much else. The fries/chips were pretty good, but they really can't be screwing that up if they want to stay in business. The 'coleslaw' was also strange. It didn't have a lot of taste and what taste it had just wasn't super delicious. So, not sure that I'd order that burger again, but overall our experience was ok. Their lovely neighborhood and location near Holland Park doesn't hurt, and the space of the restaurant is very large and comfortable. This seems like an ok place to go for a beer and a simple dish if you're in the neighborhood, but don't expect a gourmet dinner or a rowdy sports crowd - expect something somewhere in the middle, which is an odd place to be. read more

In the 1980s this place used to be called the Last Days of the Punjab or something similar, then it became a Rat and Parrot (or Slug and Lettuce) and is now a very grown up gastro-ey type pub in the heart of oh so civilised Holland Park. We popped in for a quick drink before wandering round Holland Park. They have half the pub allocated for dining. The drinks only area was a reasonable size and the interior is very nicely appointed with chesterfields etc. The food did look tasty. A couple of real ales and the usual suspects on tap. I think it could merit more than a quick drink and would return. read more

I've been here twice and have enjoyed the food very much. Well prepared and served quickly. The first time I had the pork belly which was tender and delicious. Second time around I had the chicken breast with black pudding, a potato casserole and braised cabbage. Very good, upscale comfort food is what I would call it. If the place is busy it can get quite loud, there was a party in the second time and it was tough to have a conversation. It was Friday night afterall and I'd come to expect that. Came into Mitre for a late dinner one weekday evening and they were nice enough to seat us 20 minutes before the kitchen closed. Normally I hate to do that, and I was apologetic to the server and ordered as quickly as I could to try to be considerate. To her credit she was polite and courteous and didn't make me feel like I had ruined her evening or anything like that. We both ordered the special that day - a steak pie, and it was exactly what I needed that evening. The pie was really very good, crust was crunchy, meat was tender and the broth was good and not too salty. Did I mention huge? The pie was massive, we probably could have split one, and on top of that it came with green beans and mash. I agree with Patrick in calling it somewhat upscale comfort food and with Saskia, this is definitely a gastropub without question. I'm a bit surprised to see two 2 star reviews for this place, but I can only speak to my experience which was a positive one. Service was accommodating, friendly and pleasant, and the food was good. Prices were maybe a tad high but this is a bit more of an upscale place than your traditional pub and I wouldn't call them unreasonable by any means especially considering the portion sizes. If I was in the area looking for dinner at 10:30 at night I wouldn't hesitate to stop in again. read more

This is somewhere that I really want to like but after two visits I'm convinced the service and food are just not worth a third attempt no matter how good the location. Service is slow and unfriendly and, as a vegetarian, the menu is absent of anything tempting. An over-priced, over-dressed green salad just did not cut it. This is a comfortable and rather gorgeous place with a strong Wi-Fi connection and they make a good Bellini. It has now formed a nexus with the Ravna Gora guesthouse across the street in my mind--the Ravna Gora is lovely, but having the Mitre there makes a big difference, partly because the Ravna Gora Wi-Fi is unreliable. I love this whole stretch of Holland Park Avenue in the fall--so leafy, somehow quiet even though it's a major arterial road. I miss it. read more

Simply one of my favourite gastro-pubs in the city (and I have never been a huge fan of pubs generally speaking). It doesn't get overly crowded and still feels comfortable even at its busiest. Came here with my partner for a Sunday brunch,we both got the Sunday roast (beef & pork belly). The beef was slightly tough and the pork was a little too fatty but overall it was a lovely roast. The staff are friendly and the service professional. Nice selection of wine, craft beer and ales (Camden Hells Lager/Pale Ale on tap). I went to The Mitre for my first experience of having a Sunday roast. Overall, the place was A-OK. Nothing much to write home about. I spend £15 for the pork belly, which was good but not great. The vegetables, potatoes, and popovers were pretty standard, but were seasoned pretty well. Though I would go back to this place again, I would first look for some other restaurants on nearby Portobello Road. On a positive note, it was very easy to get a seat on a Sunday night (about 6pm), so our food came out pretty quickly. read more
