When my mother and I got to our London Airbnb a couple months ago, we were famished and needed something to eat. I wanted some wicked bangers 'n' mash and this place was one of the first to pop up. It was a short 1/4 mile walk from our Airbnb. We grabbed a table when we got in and since this was our first time at a London pub, the lovely bartender gave us a rundown on how things worked, which was really nice; no judgment, just good info. After putting in our order at the bar, we waited a small amount of time for our food. The bangers 'n' mash was great, to me the highlight was the gravy on top. We had our team's Christmas party here and it was a great time. Not only did they make sure each of us get what we have ordered, they go extra way and decorated our table even when we have made the booking very last minute. From food, service, ambiance, to staff, we truly enjoyed our experience at The Mitre. It was our son's sixth birthday, we were traveling in London from the states. It was the holidays right before Christmas, and the staff made our dinner absolutely fantastic! They went above and beyond for our son, and found a special teddy bear candle from the Christmas display just to use for him to blow out after we sung him happy birthday. The food was great. I am staying close by for a couple days and unfortunately my gf can't meet me due to COVID!!!! I can't stand my own company for one more day so decided to go out to a pub and have a drink and dinner at the Swan .3 mile from where I am.... What a disappointment!! Walked out then literally stumbled in here.... So much more ambiance and Liz and Dave are absolutely stupendous with their excellent customer service..... I'm American so I know they don't rely on tips for good service. What a lovely surprise to my sad day. Thank you guys. I wish we had a Young's pub in Plymouth my home town... Our favorite pub, just a few blocks from our hotel on the way to Hyde Park. Since it is off the main road, it had more of a local feel. The service was never perfect, but the food was fine and the location was charming. While outdoor seating was limited, folks were always spilling out the door in the evening onto the mews. Our night started with a very warm welcome from Christos (Chris the Greek). We were given a very nice corner table away from the noisy bar along with a glass of wine. Perfect example of Philoxenia. (Greek hospitality) Our server was very sweet. We ordered the fish n chips. Fish was so delicious, fresh and flaky. The chips and dipping sauce were on point. Burger was cooked perfectly and garnished well. Toffee pudding was delicious in a warm caramel sauce. Hazelnut moose was a small but scrumptious treat. This is a nice Young's pub a few minutes' walk from Paddington station, with an attractive and noteworthy Grade-II listed Victorian interior. It's not the most atmospheric venue Paddington is too much of a crossroads for that but is a good find in an area with relatively few interesting pubs from which to choose. The interor is richly decorated with dark wood panelling, etched glass screens and attractive floor mosaics. The ground floor has a large bar area wrapped around the single bar, with a mixture of standing room, bar stools, tables and sofas. Upstairs are two dining rooms, decorated in the best Victorian parlour tradition, with yellow flock paper, mirrors and pictures. The upstairs rooms can be hired for meetings and dining. They serve the full range of Young's ales, plus a guest beer, which all seem well kept. The food menu is extensive, with starters around the £4.50-5.50 mark, and mains around £9 (steak is £14). We had fishcakes, which came with rocket salad and chips, and roasted vegetable and potato dauphinoise, with goats cheese and salad both were substantial and enjoyable, although a friend's steak was less successful (over-done). A pud of treacle tart with ice cream (£4.95) was very nice, but not really needed thanks to the generous mains. Service was pretty good and very friendly throughout. I will be very happy to go back to eat or drink. A plus is that serve food until 22h. read more

Fresh from a 10 hour flight, we stumbled down the street, not knowing where we were going, but definitely hungry. We wanted the stereotypical pub food, and we randomly found the Mitre and settled in. I loved the old school feel of it, and the fact that all its fireplaces were on, and the place was almost empty. We were told to sit anywhere, but to go ahead and sit by the fireplace and get warm. We were not told, however, that you had to order at the bar, so we browsed through the menu for a loooong time, while no one came. Finally, we saw that you had to order at the bar, as well as pay right after ordering...silly tourists. My friend and I both ordered the bangers and mash...they were delicious. The tables were a bit too small for dining, but the fireplace, the actual pub, and the food made for a good dinner. The barmen was also very nice, so I would definitely recommend this place. read more

My partner and I dined here for dinner while on vacation in London. Our local tour guide recommended this place. Pros- beautiful Victorian interior and exterior. Really nice pub ambiance. Good menu selections for both food and beverages. Options for meat eaters and vegetarians. Cons- we dined on a Sunday evening and service was rather slow. The place was half empty so we had hoped for a speedy dinner to return to the hotel and overcome jet lag. Staff were pleasant but overwhelmed. Food was a just ok. My partner had a complete entree with beef and sides . I was not very hungry so I ordered the halloumi salad with greens, mango, onions and quinoa. My partner said the beef entree was decent but nothing really special. My salad was missing the mango. I would have appreciated it if they would have informed me in advance that they were out of mango as I would have ordered something else. The halloumi cheese on my salad was VERY dried out and almost tough as leather , like it had been left out on the counter and all moisture had evaporated. I ate it because I was tired but had I felt better I may have sent it back to the kitchen . We would try this place again and hope for a better result. Ok to eat if you are nearby but not a destination restaurant . Prices are just ok for the food. read more

I had been across the road attending to a load of laundry and as we all know this can be a very thirst inducing pastime. A cuppla beers and some bangers and mash at the pub across the road was the only thing for it. The bar area is quite old and absolutely gorgeous. I ordered bangers and mash for 13.50 which seemed quite high but hopefully they were worth it. As per usual the bar staff were a surly gaggle of Eastern European backpackers who were much more interested in a natter with their buddies than looking after any of the customers. The look of the food has changed and not in a good way. What you are served is nothing like the pics on this page. The delicious looking caramelized onions have gone only to be replaced with cheap and nasty deep fried, battered rings. The sausages were OK but the rings arrived still frozen. Nice. Hopefully everyone realizes that most of these chain pubs don't cook the food that they serve you rather they just heat it up. I used to live near one and saw the precooked hamburgers and steaks in plastic bags being delivered in the morning. As if that wasn't enough the so called gravy wasn't gravy at all. The kindest description one might give this slop would be "meat water". Imagine a stock cube in a cup of hot water. Finally there were no peas. Cheapskates ! These people are charging absolutely top price for a very ordinary product. Chain pubs are ruining London's pub scene. read more

The Mitre is more of a restaurant than a pub, truth be told. At how many pubs would the "Manager" come over and make me vacate a table because it was "previously reserved?" Whatever, buddy... But once my friend and I did get seated, we had a decent enough time here, but only because we made friends with our server. She was very friendly, gave us a list of off-the-beaten-path things to do during our time in London, and even posed for a picture with me. But don't look for her there, because she said she was quitting. Sucks for you. I had fish and chips here, which of course is an English staple. I must say that it was pretty delicious, but it's hard to mess up something that is deep fried. The "chips" were really more like French fries too, which was a bit disappointing. A little on the higher end than most of the other places nearby, The Mitre, at least in my opinion, was trying a bit too hard. The charm of pubs comes from the relaxed feel and the communal atmosphere. Neither of those was on tap. read more

We were staying at the Corus Hotel, which is right down the street from The Mitre, and we only discovered it on our last day in London! Too bad because it seemed like we were always searching for food, and The Mitre was quite good! My friend got the steak and ale pie and I got fish and chips, and we both enjoyed our meals. The price was pretty good too. We also ordered a pitcher of Pimm's lemonade, which was our favorite drink in London. But be careful - it's one of those things that tastes like juice, then hits you before you realize it! If I'm ever in the area again, I will definitely go back to The Mitre. read more

I went here last night for a group dinner. We book the private dinning room upstairs. The night started off good. The bar staff were friendly and the atmosphere in the main bar relaxed and casual. The dining room was old fashion and full of character. We had pre ordered our food but when we arrived one of our starters had run out. This meant that our dinner that was supposed to start at 7:30 started 1 hour later. The food was mediocre at best. I had a hamburger with unimpressive fries. Love the interior of the bar - it's cosy and there is the space by the bar to socialize but little nooks for a more relaxed meal. Their drinks menu is wide and they have pretty standard fare for their food. What I really enjoyed was their salad which was refreshing but filled me up well. The only reason they don't get a 5-star review from me is that their service was a little messy. We waited for quite a while and ended up going to the bar and ordering because a waiter never came to see us. We did the same to pay because we waited for so long. While the look of the place presents a pleasant English Pub some of the staff bring that to a screeching halt. As well, a very poor Sunday roast triple. Sirloin was grizzle, pork belly was chewy fortunately the chicken was moist and served hot. Thought I'd take a chance, had some positive reviews but what a waste of 20quid. So I was on the hunt for a traditional English pub...and we found the one that I had drawn up in my mind at the Mitre. It was close to where we were staying, which made it ultra convenient. We lumbered in out of the rain to find a charming pub reeking of English charm and old-world charisma. The staff was especially friendly and very accommodating to a couple of American tourists. Not exactly sure what kind of lager I had but it was good - something local. I didn't have much of a choice for vegan food as they had ran out of the hippie loaf so I had the triple fired French fries. You can mess up French fries in my book so I appreciate that they were perfect. We will definitely return to the Mitre and recommend going there to our friends...and you! read more

They really seem to enjoy working here I ate at the Mitre on a Saturday night about 19:30. I ended up at the Mitre after I walked out of another pub that seemed disinterested in my business and was very pleasantly surprised by the staff at the Mitre. I was greeted promptly upon entering and I grabbed a small table near the bar. The kitchen was closed for a couple of weeks for renovation so the menu was shorter. I had a nice burger "BBQ" (grilled) and a proper pint. The food was tasty but the atmosphere in the bar was actually tastier! The staff genuinely seemed to be happy working there and I think every one of them asked me how I was doing at least once. There were lots of locals and there were many hugs with the staff. I love my local pub; atmosphere great, seating good, staff friendly, location IDEAL and that is why it has a 4*. Bf and I came for Sunday roast - no need to book about 5pm however by the time we left at 7pm it was getting busy. I am afraid food is 3* - good but not great. Big portions, great pork belly, nice gravy, reasonable prices but the the potatoes weren't good enough and the veg lacked any real flavour. Beer selection is good but could be more varied however if you are a gin fan they have a fair few! On a Sunday evening at 8pm they also have jazz music playing in the cocktail bar downstairs. Their dessert menu looks great but we were so full we didn't get to try it :( read more

I used to think that people who got pick-pocketed were, in some sense, victims of their own naivete. Until it happend to me, at the Mitre. The Mitre is a tourist bar, but it also happens to be my local so I'd pop in every now and then for a quick drink. The bar staff was always fine, though usually really quite slow and not particularly efficient. But not terrible either. Average, fine. I've always been very vigilant about looking after my belongings, never leaving my purse unattended, never leaving my phone out on a bar top where it could get snatched, etc. However, the pick-pockets who operate at the Mitre run a tight ship. It was daylight, and not even very crowded. My purse was fully zipped and right next to me. Someone, unbeknownst to me or my companion, artfully got close to me (again, NOT crowded during this time), unzipped my bag, reached their hands in and made off with my phone and wallet without me or anyone around me noticing. The Mitre's response was basically to the effect of "Too bad." When I filed the police report subsequently, I was told by a member of police that pick-pocketing happens a lot at the Mitre. Apparently, on the day it happend to me, the bartenders weren't paying attention to the patrons moving about in their bar, because even on a slow day, with sparse attendance, this went unnoticed. I get that I can't really blame them for the fact that I got pick-pocketed at their bar, as that's not exactly the Mitre's fault, but maybe, just maybe, if artful, skilled pick-pocketing is an ongoing problem at your pub, you do something about it? You know, like install CCTV cameras, or a security guard at the door, or, you know, just at least give a damn when it happens to one of your patrons and take steps to prevent it in the future? To sit back and continually allow this to happen consistently reeks of apathy or, worse yet, complacency. Nice place for a drink, but seriously hold on to your stuff here, people. read more

Well, it's 2012 and now I am at home listening to Autechre, watching some shit fuck olympic sport, and somewhat drunk from the Southern California "pub" I just stumbled out of. 5 London Prides later and I am not satisfied. They tasted like sweet shit. I remember when I came to The Mitre way back when, I was a bit taken back by the cask system (again, I was 23 and didn't know better) but god damn, one of the best tasting beers I have ever had. So, in closing, if someone wants to fly me back out to London for some good tasting beer, I woud love it. read more
