The CAMP is a very unique and aesthetically pleasing little plaza. Very green (in color and spirit) and hipster-ish, but not in an annoying way. I love all the little details, like the mailbox station with restaurant menus, the beautifully potted plants, the large "community" sign, etc. Great place to grab a coffee or a bite to eat. Parking is a bit of a pain. There's valet available, but unnecessary. Each parking spot has a motivational word/saying like "focus" and "vacation time." Cute. I'm not exactly sure of the concept/function of this place. The website says it's a "green, eco-friendly retail campus dedicated to an active, healthy lifestyle mindful of environmentalism and supportive of the local community." Overall, I think it's very well done, even though I don't completely get it. read more

Husband and I went to Native Foods, an all vegan awesome place. We loved our meal, really delicious plates anyone vegan or not would enjoy. Also the Camp is a great place to visit, for anyone; families, couples or any other combination. It's expertly laid out with wonderful sitting areas. Wow, The CAMP. What a great find in OC! How shall I describe this? It's an outdoor shopping center with plenty of food places. It's trendy, hipster-y, creative, nature-y, and funky all at the same time. It's definitely a fun, unique, novelty place. I mean there was thought put into the parking spots -- as in, there's words/phrases such as "simplify", "people make history", "patience". I was a little confused at first thinking that it's reserved for certain stores, but it's not. I believe they are just friendly reminders to relax, unplug as you walk towards to stores. I haven't seen a shopping center quite like this one. Major props for creativity. It's a great place for families, friends, dates, or just go by yourself and treat yo self! P.S. Yes, parking can be challenging. I was able to find a spot, but there's free valet.. so maybe try that out if you're not in the mood to circle around the parking lot? (47/100) read more

This place is a little too outdoorsy for me. very different atmosphere than when i used to drive all the way down here for a meat market called shark club around this area back in the day... i can leave my hoochie gear, ricerocket and hitech gadgets at home here. I love The CAMP and it's eclectic stores and restaurants that they offer. Faves: - Blackmarket Bakery: Delicious baked goods and sandwiches. - Vitaly: Some of the best coffee I've had and I can't wait to come back and try their food. - Taco Asylum: I like their unique take on the normal taco. Ghost chili is pretty awesome. - Old Vine Cafe: Great Italian food and some crispy pizza. - The Wine Lab: They have a nice chill atmosphere where you can enjoy a drink. I'm not a huge wine person, but enjoy their beer selections - Native Foods: An array of vegan delights - SEED People's Market: They have cool, unique, little gifts and things for your house, jewelery and more. I honestly don't come enough because the parking situation is ridiculously annoying. Like tot the point where you just throw your hands up in frustration and leave. There are some places to park away from The Camp down Randolph (close to Rooster Cafe), but not ideal if you don't feel like walking. They offer valet during really busy nights - I'd definitely recommend going that route, but it can just be a pain waiting in a car line to get to the valet because there are so many other cars circling the lot trying to find a spot on their own. During the afternoon/evening, the parking lot is completely packed because of the Bikram yoga studio that gets crazy busy. They have a lot of their classes back to back, so if you want any chance in hell of finding a spot, I'd look up their schedule to see when a class ends and try to just hang out for a second to steal one of their spots. Coming at night is pretty awesome though. It feels very rustic and woodsy outside as they have picnic tables and hammocks for you to hang out in. During the summer it's uber popular out here, but it's definitely a relaxing way to enjoy our beautiful weather that SoCal has to offer. Bring your pets, they're welcome, too! read more

I expected much more. Like more than one hammock. Like wide open spaces and green pastures. Maybe even cow or a goat. Not really but I thought the dramatics of it sounded good. I think their parking area is larger than the actual "shopping" space. I find that funny as they encourage you to "ride your bike" instead of driving. The space was new and kept up very nice. I felt like I was in Palm Springs with succulents everywhere instead of cactuses. A nice variety of places to eat. A few places to shop. A hair salon. Hell you can even get a tattoo. Thought this was a place where I could waste the day away but we breezed through the joint in about an hour. It was cool but it's not a destination spot at all. read more

So anyway, we've found a place that's much more us: the CAMP. I am sorry I don't like to CAMP. I was never a girl scout, and I don't need no stinkin' patches, but I do have a black belt in shopping. In a sea of mini-mall madness, the CAMP is a welcome respite. It is totally contrived, swarming with hipsters without day jobs, and has faux crickets (well, it's better than the real thing). The CAMP offers a charming bit of uniqueness in the world of mini-malling in the OC. Clever design, cutesy signage, and a general overall feeling of heartiness. There are some good eateries and some interesting stores. All in all, the main reason to go to the CAMP is the bomb people watching, good eats and the fake wilderness in the asphalt wasteland. read more

This place is even great just to walk around to take some awesome photos with their 'campy' decor (Eco-Friendly). IT'S SO INSTAGRAM-READY YOU GUYS This is more of a blanket review for both The Camp and sister The Lab across the street. Seriously. This place is #aesthetic on blast. I didn't eat or shop at any of the stores since I had been at South Coast, but The Camp and its sister property The Lab are a good mix of pretentiousness and arms-length irony. Lots of nooks and surprising corners to explore, and the wares being sold looked quality. I also highly recommend Cafecito Organico at The Lab, coffee done right! If I had one gripe about the two properties, it's their "anchor stores" Urban Outfitters (The Lab) and Active (The Camp.) For a duo of shopping centers that emphasize buying local/artisanal/independent, it's unfortunate that two mall stores are the center of attention. Both stores are smaller than their counterparts in nearby cities, and their selection seemed less interesting as well. read more

Awesome place to check out for the adventurous of mind, body & spirit. The CAMP is a hipster haven of independently owned stores, restaurants and eco-friendly ambiance. My favorite places to visit are: Old Vine Cafe, Wine Lab, Blackmarket Bakery, East Borough, Milk + Honey, and Umami Burger. Sure there's a chain here or there (Native Foods & Umami) but for the most part, the CAMP is a great place to shop, eat, and thrive in Costa Mesa. This place is Fugazi town U.S.A. Gandalf hates this place, but loves this place. Too many pseudo-treehuggers walkin around buying recycled shit for quadruple the actual cost. It's supposed to be a hippy enclave but I don't remember hippies having valet parking. Hell, even the Greenpeace guys out front are too fucking nice. I even saw a bearded hippy guy at one of the stores take off his fake beard during his break! I overheard him say to his buds: "Deyude, it's like thot beer-yerd, is ssooo itcheh mee-yan." That being said, this place is money for getting a maiden to shed her garments. Bring her here, walk around the expensive artsy stores, buy a $24 t-shirt for your cute nephew(to show her your sensitive side), have lunch at one of the hip eateries, buy some wine and cheese and say you'll share it later. Does anyone else it is ironic that a shopping center called "The Camp" has valet parking? The first time I visited The Camp a few years ago, I felt like I wasn't granola enough to shop here now, I am not hip enough for The Camp. Parking, especially on weekend nights, has become a pain in the butt (I guess that is why they have valet now). It is also difficult to enjoy the serene atmosphere when you are getting harassed by Greenpeace staff or by a bum yelling obsenities at you. The only reason I come here is to go to the resturants. I enjoy East Borough, Valhalla table and when I am feeling swanky, Mesa. I haven't tried Ecco, Taco Asylum or Old Vine but I hear they are good. read more

Great little shopping center with no shortage of great eats. Frozen yogurt at Milk n Honey, a umami burgers truffle burger, Eccos thin crust pizza, brunch at Old Vine, vegetarian goodness at Native Foods, cheese plate at Wine Lab, vermicelli at East Borough, mushroom tacos at Taco Asylum, anything at Mesa, florentine bar at Blackmarket, the list goes on. Try going on off hours to beat the stressful, scarce parking that turns this peaceful oasis into a fight to the death over a parking spot right and you end up clubbing someone over the head right before you go do some hot yoga at Bikram. read more

This was another place I discovered from my "Know What: Local OC" Map and I am sooo happy I found out about this place (If you haven't read my previous reviews, the Know What app is a hand curated guide of places to check out in the OC and LA. It's curated by local bloggers, writers, etc, and features a really interesting selection). Back to the actual location.. I love that this place is considered the "anti-mall", especially in an area where there are a ton of mainstream retailers and malls (South Coast Plaza, I'm looking at you). There are a ton of quirky places to shop and eat including Native Foods (vegan), Umami Burger (busy, but worth the wait), Milk and Honey, Asylum Tacos, East Bourough (where I had a wonderful lychee soda with mint), and one of my favorite stores, SEED People's Market. SEED People's market has a great selection of design/decor objects, books, etsy merchandise, unique finds and brands that you can usually only find in certain cities, and a lot of indie-eco brands. This store alone is worth coming to The Camp. They also have Pop Physique upstairs in this loft area. My favorite thing about the shopping center is the little details that put you in the "indie" mindset. I love that random poles are knit-bombed, terrariums are on top of trash cans, and the parking spaces have cute messages like "Make New Friends", or "Travel Often". Instead of "No Parking", you get a dose of inspiration before hitting the stores. The airstream trailer is also a cute touch. read more

Cancelled an event the night before (at 11pm according to the vendor in charge of the event) and did not post any sign in the plaza to inform people who made an effort to show up for. FB event posting was cancelled on the day of and the event was supposed to start at 10am. Bad management. Not likely to take their events seriously in the future. read more

Really fun place to spend an afternoon or evening. There are lots of delicious food options, which makes it a great option if you're in a group and can't decide on where to eat--there's something here for everyone! After you eat, browse some of the shops...lots of fun places. It's intensely hip, so the clientele tends to all look the same, and some of the decor is over the top, but overall, it's pretty cute, with lots of attention to detail when it comes to the aesthetic. read more

Another theme mall in Costa Mesa, right next to The Lab. Thank goodness it's separated from the "Anti-Mall" by Bristol; otherwise, they'd annhialate eachother in an energy-releasing explosion. I felt compelled to include this review on my list of urban wilderness kitsch ( a la Bigfoot Lodge). However, there may be too much earnestness behind The Camp to truly count as kitsch. This mall has an Eco-theme to it, with naturalistic landscaping and artificial birds chirping (oh! the irony!). On the plus side, this mall is not a chain-bonanza almost deffinitively associated with malls and The OC. In fact, it's a slap in the face of the blandness and homogeny so typical of malls, and proof that suburbia can try to establish a genuine chatacter and sense of place. It's an answer to everything I hate about The Grove. Lots of veggie and veg-friendly restaurants. And I got my wicked awesome tattoo here! On the minus side? It's still a mall. It perpetuates the myth that consumerism and materialism is compatible with an environmental ethic. The landscaping is water-wise, but lots of non-natives, including that pernicious weed and scourge of OC's wildlands, purple fountain grass (have you seen it take over the 74 in the Cleveland NF?). Shame on them for promoting an active bad on the environment while claiming it's good! Also, the affirmations written on all the parking spaces are a bit much. read more

Orange County can get quite dull and boring after a while. LIKE omg BORING AF. But I will NEVER ever get sick of the CAMP... It's a great place to just wind down and catch up with a few friends. If you're hungry, grab an Umami Burger, banh mi from East Borough, or a gourmet taco from Taco Asylum. Need a caffeine fix? Milk + Honey! Shopping? So many cute little shops including Active. There's always something for everyone at the CAMP! Even if you're just looking for a place to kick it and relax, just come here to enjoy the ambiance. Lots of random nice sitting areas. I thought The Camp was prettty cool. I stumbled upon here with the brother, looking for American Apparel, which happened to be up the street a little more. Anyways, The Camp's theme was pretty impressive.. from the white painted slogans on the parking spots, to the cool architecture, to the (my favorite) crazy cool hammock by the tree. If ever I'm in the area on a hot day and I go to The Camp, I'll be trying out the hammock.. haha. The only thing I probably don't like about this place is that there are barely any stores.. or good ones at least, but I don't know if that's what The Camp is for. I'm just saying.. Another plus about The Camp is that you can chill around in those cool lounging places and use their internet, do some studying in a calm, peaceful place. With the warm weather, I'm falling more in love with this shopping center. Nevermind the hippy, motivational sayings painted at each parking spot. The desert landscaping and rippling water sound effects transport me to Arizona on a weekend getaway. The planning of the center is perfect as well. Around each bend in the pathway is another excellent storefront. I'm not really a fan of the stores but moreso the restaurants, of which they boast many that are stomach pleasing: Native Foods, Taco Asylum, Ecco, Old Vine Cafe, and East Borough all in one place?! I find the portion where Valhalla Table, 118 Degrees, and Milk & Honey a bit incongruous and strip-mall-esque but I don't spend much time out there anyway. read more

A little too hipster for my taste, but a welcome relief from urbanization. Nice recycled decor. Outdoor settings scream at me to hang out, but I just don't have the time. If you're bored one day, you could come here and look at all their non-traditional retail therapy for hours. The Camp vs The Lab, what's the difference? The Camp is the shopping center and outdoor trendy area that hosts Blackmarket Bakery, Native Foods, Taco Asylum, Seed People, and Vitaly Cafe just to name a few. The Lab also known as The Anti Mall is diagonally across the street in Bristol. That parking lot is smaller and Habana is in there as well as the outdoor bonfire, Buffalo Exchange, Urban Outfitters, and more retailers to restaurants. The Lab is more restaurants to retailers for the most part. Milk and Honey is amazing tea and coffee that you have to check out if you stumble upon this haven. Also 118 Degrees is an all raw food eatery with locations in Anaheim and is locally owned and guaranteed to be a hit for vegans and allergy aware people. read more

I love that there's a lot of support for local businesses. Hipster, but more for the green/hippie/active crowd. I really enjoy how all the shops and eateries in the Camp match the central theme. My favorite is the Patagonia shop. ^__^ and upstairs in that shop is where they hold yoga classes! That speaks for itself! Hope to see more places like this! Yes, parking is terrible, but keep searching and eventually someone will leave. I'm one of those people that desperately look for parking spots because I do not trust valet - it doesn't matter where - this girl just does not do valet. Period.
