Short: Cafeteria-style with British Classics. Neat underground "hidden" location with beautiful stone & arched ceilings. Quick and wholesome food. Visited in June 2022.
I came in originally for their advertisement of Afternoon Tea and the underground location. Apparently, after waiting for a half-hour, I learned from 2 staff members that it was not offered yet until the upcoming weekend, to my disappointment. However, I settled for 2 sweet pastries [Victoria Sponge & Strawberry almond cake] they had and some British chips [chunky steak fries/baked potatoes]. Along with a tea, from their "secret" menu, the rose tea. It was very aromatic and rosy, absolutely loved it!
The Victoria Sponge was not dry, and the jam was very subtle, overall, it fit with my expectation of what a Victoria Sponge would be. Just wished for a bit more strawberry. The cream wasn't too heavy.
I really loved the Strawberry & Almond Cake. The cream was light and fluffy, to my surprise. A fresh strawberry and sliced almond almost in every bite. The cake itself was subtle/sweet and not too heavy. It really tasted fresh, and I enjoyed it. Would recommend to those who enjoy light delicate pastries.
Prices (from my memory): Cake and Sponge about £4/ea, Chips £3,5, and tea £3.
Service was quick since it is cafeteria-style. The workers were somewhat helpful, just wish there was some better communication amongst them. The location is very convenient [super close to the National Gallery] and very fun, being underground, it was very beautiful with the stone walls. Along with the sense of exclusiveness. read more
