I grew up in Sumner and still live around the area, so before today I had been to most of the breakfast places in town except for the Buttered Biscuit. Between the Yelp reviews and the recommendations of friends, I finally gave it a try and was pretty disappointed. The portions were huge, which was nice, but the food was generally unpleasantly greasy or way too sugary. I got the SOS because the gravy sounded great on paper (and because who doesn't love biscuits and gravy?), but when it came it was way heavier than I was expecting and tasted like there was ton of butter in it. My girlfriend ordered the crepes and when they came they were pre-covered with a ton of butter and whipped cream. Usually I wouldn't complain about tons of butter, but when it gets in the way of how a dish should taste it's disappointing. The worst part of the whole trip was the service. At first we were wondering if we did something to piss off our server. She didn't come by to greet us for 15-20 minutes or so after being seated, and when she did come she seemed snippy and short with us. We didn't get the drinks we ordered (or waters or anything) for at least another 15 minutes, and when she dropped them off she gave us a hot chocolate that none of us ordered (we didn't drink it and weren't charged for it though, so at least that was good...). The only reason I left a tip was because the busboys were awesome and didn't want to stiff them for their hard work. Extremely polite and hurrying around serving us and people at the other tables very well. Moral of the story is that there weren't many positives to this place. If you're looking for good breakfast places around the area, I would recommend Dixie's (get Dad's Breakfast if you want giant portions that actually taste good), Berryland (if it's not a Sunday when they're closed), or the restaurant right across the street from Berryland (forgot its name...) if you're in Sumner. The Lumberjack up in Buckley is great if you're around that area, or there's the restaurant inside the Daffodil Bowl or Charlie's if you're towards Puyallup. Don't really have a reason to come back here with so many other awesome options in the area. read more

Ok, if you are watching calories, or carbs, or your weight, or don't like gravy or butter, or only eat portions the size of your fist, DON'T GO HERE! lol. And if every piece of silverware has to match, you only eat off china, and you can't handle tables and chairs that are all different. YOU WON'T LIKE IT! But if you are looking for and like good comfort food with hefty portions (you'll be stuffed if you eat it all) or as they call it - Gramma food! - YOU WILL LOVE THIS PLACE! Breakfast is killer, lunch is awesome. Haven't tried it for dinner. The staff is very friendly, it can get very busy and when it does, the service is a little slow, but always helpful. The menu is fun and plentiful and vast. Pancakes, french toast, the breakfast burrito (I could only eat half of it!) are all great. The meatloaf sandwich is awesome! Haven't had a bad experience yet as long as you can handle being a little patient, but hey, they make sure while you wait that your coffee cup/water glass/soda is never empty! It was recommended to me by a business associate. He mentioned it would not be a disappointment and portions were huge. Qualifications...not the greatest of atmosphere but food was very good. I ordered the Clubhouse sandwich, Flamin BBQ Burger, a side of cole slaw, side of potato salad. Club = generous amounts or turkey. Too large to fit onto your pie hole because of the middle slice of bread. Half will fill you up. Burger = meat appeared to be of good quality and substantial. Toppings made this equally almost impossible to open wide enough. Cole slaw was very tasty but I would prefer to have it less chopped and not so much juice. Potato salad was super with pieces of ham. Flavor was spot on. Seriously, food will bring me back to this place. If you don't care about the atmosphere or slow service (15-20 minutes to get your food) but want excellent food, this a place you need to try. read more

This place came highly recommended by multiple friends and now I know why! This place is super! They make a cornbread that is more like a cake with a honey butter glaze. I ordered the bacon waffles that came with bacon and grandma's eggs. I asked for a box before I even began because I knew I would not be able to finish it all. My husband ordered a breakfast burrito the size of his head that came with hash browns. My son ordered the 222+2 (I think that is the name) and it came with french toast, eggs, bacon, and sausage. The service was friendly and fast! The salsa was delicious and we bought a jar for home. The price is totally reasonable! They have a wonderful variety and I thought it was totally awesome how vast their vegetarian selection was. read more

My wife and I had this place recommended to us...took our 7 year old and tried it. You know how some places start you off with free breadsticks?...Well, our waitress shows up with what looks like a big piece of yellow cake, complete with a sticky, frosting-like topping. Me: 'um...we didn't order this... Waitress: This is your first time here, isn't it? This is our complimentary cornbread! Me: That's cornbread? (side-long glance at my wife, back to waitress)...it looks like dessert!...and cornbread for breakfast?? (another dubious glance at the wife) Waitress: Try it...you'll see. 3 minutes (and many grunting sounds of delight) later, we were instant fans of the Buttered Biscuit. Be warned...this is not a place for people watching their waistlines! Portions are huge, and I can pack it away, but I couldn't finish it! Wish I could give a better rating but I can't. Heard about this place for Bfast by word of mouth. First of all they have this large establishment but have this super cheap small vinyl banner with their Rest Name hanging above the front door. They need better signage you can read from the road. The wait was out the door but the seating was quick. They have 2 floors of seating and the place has a country hodge podge feel. Needs just a bit more character. The menu's are cheap but the selction of food is vast. Their platings are HUGE and the food was good. Service was good and attentive. The potatos that come with the Bfast not good, too greasy. My plate was sticky and greasy underneath, ewwww. This establishment makes you stand in another line at the front door to pay for your meal. We waited a half hour to pay for our meal which was a total turn off. Rest servers are weaving in and out of the pay line, just not a good flow going there. We were talking about maybe coming back for another go at Bfast but after that ordeal we decided that this place is not worth another visit. This place has potential to be great but they need to work on their food service flow and the payout portion of the diners experience. Cleanliness is something of an issue too. read more

What we did expect was for the food to not have been so hot that it melted the styrofoam boxes together. Wish I could chime in along with all the other great reviews because others I know have been here and loved it. Got seated right away wish was great. But then waited more than a half hour for our food. When it finally arrived it was cold so I would guess it had been sitting. Out order was all mixed up. Items we had asked not be included or put on the side weren't as we had asked. When I went to use my silverware it was dirty. No one was around to ask for a set so I went to a wait station and asked for clean silverware, which I appreciated. They tried making things right by rving extra food but there's no way I could eat all of it and I had told the waiter not to bring it. But I guess that didn't matter. I also wasn't a big fan of the flies in the dining area and bathroom. There was food on the floor and the toilet in the bathroom needed to be replaced. On the plus side they do have a gluten free menu, which was really great! I added a star for that. Also on the plus side, the wait staff really did try. I'm not sure if the kitchen was understaffed or just what but for some reason it wasn't working out well when I visited. I won't be back unless my family who lives in the area really wants to go. And if we do go back I'm hoping this was just an off day for the Buttered Biscuit. read more

Went to the Sumner location yesterday people waiting in line tables needed to be cleaned and empty seats. Unfortunately they have staffing issues and it has been going on for quite a while and for some reason they cannot get it together. Unfortunately we had to leave because we waited a half hour and the people we watched be seated when we walked in sat the same half hour waiting for their order to be taken. Update! I've always enjoyed BB for breakfast, so last night me and the wife decided we wanted to have breakfast food for dinner. Bad idea. The service was sub par, the biscuits and cornbread were stale, and the cinnamon roll French toast was completely different. Instead of one giant delicious roll, we were given two tiny cinnamon rolls that had obviously been sitting out in the open all day (very very stale). When I asked our waitress if they had changed the dish, she lied and said it's always been that way. Last night BB lost us as customers. Went in with my cousin from out of town. We were seated upstairs and had very attentive service. They even helped my cousin sample the hollandaise sauce before she ordered her eggs benedict. Most notable was that we ordered a cinnamon roll to share. It was the most insanely large gooey cinnamon roll I have ever seen. In addition to our already heaping portions, ordering this add-on was a total mistake. We were just too full to do it justice. Luckily, our server was well prepared with several to-go boxes for us. My only small complaint was the music was up pretty loud upstairs. It was a little tricky to have an intense conversation over the Christmas tunes (this was in December). I have to go back in time to review this place. I visited my bio dad and step mom in Puyallup, and before I left they took me here for breakfast. I had a huge omelet, hashbrowns, and the cornbread of coronary death. I think I am feeling chest pains just thinking about it. I also had like half of my son's chicken fried steak, amongst other things. I can't think of a single thing they can change about the food. It's incredible. Regretfully I must dock one star because of the wait times. I can absolutely see why there is a wait, due to the food being out of this world (I like it more than a donut from Voodoo, and that's an accomplishment) but crowd control was pretty off on our visit, and the lady seating us seemed overwhelmed and annoyed at the never ending line of patrons wanting to eat coronary cornbread. I have mixed feelings about this place, but the positives out weigh any negatives. One Big Positive: they have homemade corn beef hash. This is only the second place I have been able to find REAL corn beef hash, the other place being Portage Bay Cafe in Seattle. I don't know how many times I have been told by a waitress that they have good corned beef hash, only to be served something that clearly came from a can. Their corned beef hash is one of my favorites and I order it almost every-time I go their. Again though, I have only had real corned beef hash one other time, but in my mind, this is how corned beef hash should taste. They do a good job on the rest of their food. My hesitation with them is the way they tend to overdo some things. The meal portions are HUGE, there tends to be a lot of gravy and grease. The thick layer of butter and sugar on their cornbread is good, but a little excessive. I have a feeling that these things are a embrace of some bigger than life, live for today, eat what you want mentality. While I have my days when I eat a plate full of bacon wrapped around sausages on top of eggs and waffles, I think they could pare back their meals a little while still maintaining the spirit of their food. To end on a positive note, the people are super nice, service is great, the place looks like a country diner. I would recommend you go out of your way to try it, but be prepared for a nap right after. read more

I'm looking for a small apartment in Sumner, as I type. Just so I can have breakfast here a few times a month. Don't be a chicken? Be a chicken. Be very afraid. My friend and I split this, and still had leftovers to split between the two of us. You can nosh on this for days. True Story. Sometimes things are just obnoxiously big, but not good. This, like John Goodman, is both big and good. Yes sir. The best chicken fried steak I've had. But to be completely honest, I haven't eaten chicken fried steaks often. Yet, ever since trying this, I have been trying chicken fried steaks at other places. Just doesn't compare. The gravy that they put on the steak is delicious. Not to toot my own horn, but normally I only like my own sausage gravy. My gravy cannot compare. The gravy has both sausage and hamburger. I never would have thought that hamburger could add so much depth. Now, the biscuit, is less John Goodman, and more Roseanne Bar. It's kind of obnoxious and big, for no good reason. Didn't really care for the potatoes either. I like my breakfast potatoes crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. These seemed they might be pre-cooked and reheated. We also have had the Aristotle. It's one of the tastiest eggs benedicts that I have ever had. It's your familiar poached eggs, with hollandaise, but also with feta, tomatoes, olives, and your not so classic lamb. The richness of the egg contrasts nicely with the Greek flavors. I only wish it came on an english muffin as opposed to the biscuit. The minor inconsistencies are not enough to mitigate my rating. This place has some good breakfast. read more

Big letdown. I wanted to like this place, I really did. The space: Extremely cool. Very warm and funky. The service: Scattered, frazzled...but very very nice waitress who tried very hard even though she was the only one doing (ordering / expediting / bussing) the whole room of five tables. The food: "Monster Cristo" - tasty, not too salty, moist "Kielbasa Tippy Canoe" - blah "Meat Loaf Sammy" - meh french fries - had better, had worse corn bread - uniquely moist and heavy, more like a dessert but not overly sweet (and free as a before meal treat!) Cleanliness: As mentioned below by Zoe, this was a big concern. There was piece of paper of some sort floating on the bottom of my glass of ice water, which made me look down to inspect the floor...which was out of control dirty. Not the kind that's been there forever, but the kind that says it's 4 o clock and nobody has bothered to sweep anything up since the breakfast rush. The floor of the kitchen looked worse. Let me tell you, if are looking for a great place to have breakfast, this is your place. It was pretty much considered a hidden restaurant and if you want to find this place and have the address you will have to search for the restaurant but it is well worth the place. Hint: you have to go into the parking lot and the end of North street and look on the back side of a building in the basement to find this place. The food was absolutely terrific, we have had some great food around the area but this place is one of the best. Whether it was the 222+2, or the Bacon-Bacon Waffle, Cinnamon roll french toast or corned beef hash everything was done to perfection. The service was outstanding the food was definitely plentiful and no matter what you order you feel like you got your money's worth and in today's environment, value is important. Finally made it back here for the second time. This place is not easy to find. But soo worth finding! I promise. I got the Loggers Jubilee. The cornbread appetizer is divine and HUGE. I don't eat corn but i'll eat me some cornbread! Yumm! My dish consisted of more cornbread kielbasa, grilled onion, potatoes, scrambled eggs, and sausage gravy all over. Oh and lightly shredded cheese on top. I know I will be returning. Plenty of large booth seating. Dinning area is bigger than what it looks like from outside. If you want an unhealthy 'Merican Breakfast, then COME HERE! They don't call themselves The Buttered Biscuit for nothin'! You will get lots of BUTTER on your cornbread (which is delicious), but you may feel really bad about eating it later. Omelets are delish! Chicken fried steak is HUGE. Orange juice is super concentrated (I always add water to mine. It makes it last longer), and is fresh. Make sure to come early. It tends to get busy, but usually the wait isn't too long. They know how to flip tables! So, if you are looking for a greasy, 'Merican, un-healthy, deep fried meats, butter saturated breads type of restaurant, you have found it in The Buttered Biscuit. I had been looking forward to trying out this restaurant because I'd heard great things about it. But after my visit this last Sunday I definitely won't be going back. My husband and I went for brunch, around noon. It was a Sunday so we expected the 30 minute wait. That was fine. What wasn't ok was waiting 15 minutes at our table before our presence was even acknowledged, while everyone around us (seated AFTER us) had their orders taken and food delivered! By the time a busboy finally brought us some water I was starting to wonder if our waitress was actively avoiding us. Now, onto the food... My husband is allergic to onions, which limited his choices because almost everything on their menu (which is photocopied paper and covered in food - literally) is smothered in their SOS gravy, which of course has onions - and no, they do not have an alternative. He finally settled on a scramble, and asked for no onions. Yep, you guessed it! After taking a few bites he found onions! But he didn't even want to finish his meal anyways. It looked like they just threw a bunch of crap in a bowl and tossed some cheese on it. He said it was disgusting and only had a few bites. I ordered the S.O. S., which is just their fancy way of saying biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were stale and rock hard on the bottom. The gravy (which by their menu they seem very proud of) was bland and flavorless. But the worst part was the "spuds" that came with the meal. They were basically just slices of undercooked fried potatoes with no seasoning. They were mushy and disgusting. If you're going to serve potatoes, make them crispy! And they should have been seasoned with at least salt and pepper. I also did not finish my meal. Neither of us took home our leftovers. The cornbread was good, but not great. It was topped with this sweet cream butter that was actually more like a frosting. I took a couple bites but it was too rich to finish. I have been back to buttered biscuit a few times now and they have gotten better and better. I still do not enjoy the cornbread like so many others do, but the food is on point. It is pretty expensive for breakfast. Prices range from 9.99 to 14.99 for breakfast. My family of 4 ends of with a tab around 60.00 when dining here. What exactly is going on at this Sumner sensation? During my triumphant return this weekend, Mom offered to bring me in on the secret. We stopped by for an early dinner on Friday night, and were promptly offered a seat and menus. The daily special list was staggering: Swedish meatballs, a Thanksgiving-style turkey dinner, a super-indulgent burger with onion rings. As I was reading through the sandwiches and entrees on the regular menu, a waitress passed by with orders bound for another table - yep, no one's been pulling my leg. These portions could feed Chewbacca. I ordered the Chicken & Artichoke sandwich, and my mom got the turkey dinner special. We each got salads, me with a garden salad and her with a warm bacon and spinach salad. I was instantly jealous. The simple spinach, crisp thick-cut bacon and tangy vinaigrette was like first-course candy. Although the garden salad was much more substantial than most restaurants. Some shredded cheddar, onions, cucumbers, leafy greens, tomatoes - none of that sad iceberg on a saucer garbage. My sandwich was messy, but huge and delicious. There was something about the bread that I couldn't quite pinpoint, but that made it irresistible. A little sweet, toasted and spread with a nice garlic-chive cream cheese. I could've just eaten a basket of that, but the artichokes, onions, chicken and swiss cheese were welcome to the party. The service was all right. Nothing bad, but just not overly friendly or particularly interested. We were never neglected. I hope to come back and let my husband dig into the bountiful Buttered Biscuit, hopefully sooner than later. I don't want to rack up another bad track record. read more

We have been here several times, & I can definitely say the only thing that is consistent at Buttered Biscuit is their slow service. Food is meh, if you like big portions, lots of butter, grease & sugar. The last time we were there, no one was at the front greet to us & seat us. Someone peaks out from back & finally tells us we can sit anywhere. Anywhere - if you can find a seat. Practically every table had dirty dishes & glasses. The manager & the 2 waitresses were too busy doing coffee & food orders to care how their dining room looked. They were not concerned at all to clean up their dining area. Disgusting. We finally found a spot way in the back corner & waited 7 min. for a menu & to be asked if we'd like coffee or juice. Another 8 min. , our waitress came back with our beverages & took our orders. My husband put a timer to see how long it would take for our food to arrive. After a good 38 min., of waiting for our breakfast & that piece of their cornbread that they are known for, our food arrived. We still had to ask for the cornbread because that hadn't come up yet. The food looked good, but looking & tasting are 2 different things. I guess you have to ask for everything nowadays... My daughter had Berries French Toast, which she thought was too sweet. She took a couple bites & she was turned off. Couldn't even get her to eat it the next day, because she was afraid it would give her an upset stomach. My husband was happy with his Don't be a Chicken platter. His gravy was pretty tasty, he said, & the chix fried steak was crispy, even under all that gravy, at least for the first few bites. My Brihanna Eggs Benedict was all wrong & disappointing. First of all, I must explain that I always order this dish because the sausage patty is really delicious & moist. And the Poached eggs have always been done just perfect - when you cut into the yolk, it pours out so luxuriously. This time, the entire thing didn't taste the same. the sausage patty was obviously missing & the waitress didn't even mention it when I ordered. Then, one of my poached eggs was overdone & hard, talk about disappointing. We called our waitress back, I didn't want to mention the egg being overdone because who knows how long it would take for them to get me a new poached egg. But, I did mention that my sausage patty was missing & she wasn't even aware that the kitchen didn't have any of the sausage patty to serve that Monday morning. She went back to the kitchen to find out why I didn't get a patty. Their excuse was "they were busy that weekend & must've run out". I guess the kitchen & front staff do not communicate. What a way to run a business!! It's going to be a very long time before anyone can convince me to go back to this place again. Sorry BB, I've lost confidence in you & I surely won't be recommending your place anytime soon. Oh, & BTW, during our whole meal, we had to look at dirty tables. That was really appetizing...NOT! Met the family here one day and i dont think any of us finished all our food the cornbread is to die for and there chicken fried steak was huge never once did i have ro ask for more coffee so nice here cant wait to go back and try more stuff read more

The food was pretty good. I got the chicken little (6oz chicken fried steak) with gramma eggs, and hash browns, all served with sausage gravy. It usually comes with their spuds, but hash browns are a much better options. My wife's spuds were chewy and resembled soggy kettle chips. I also got a Bloody Mary with my breakfast. It tasted subpar to say the least. It reminded me, and may have been, v8 with vodka. It was garnished with a tooth pick with two green olives and a strip of bacon. The Bloody Mary was really lacking that bold depth of spicy flavor that a good Mary should have. This was the first time we've sat upstairs. It was nice and spacious, but was interrupted by a large TV playing PBS kids. The TV seems to clash with the rest of the room. read more
